CeCe mentioned that a lot of people have atleast a lil German in them, and I agreed! Almost everyone I meet has atleast a lil German in their heritage!
Do you?

Louisville is very German.
Infact, we have a part of town known as Germantown.

True. BUT, behind Americans, I run into more Dutchies than any other nationality.
I've also come to the conclusion that the Dutch are hippies :)

Hello, I be from Cincinatti. Originally Zinzinatti. Hell yes, I am 90% German!
-
Yes i do.
My dad's site

I'm either scandinavian or german. My last name is how I know. Those of you who know my last name can see it is most likely a german name. People in the third reich had last names like mine. That is how germanic my name is. Though it could be swedish too, I guess.

I'm latin and I have german blood.
It's not that weird, actually, since there was a lot of German activity (even pre-WWII, yes) in South America.

Infact, we have a part of town known as Germantown.
WOOP! WOOP! I TOTALLY live there (but not actually) . . . I live on the OTHER side of Eastern Parkway - which is St. Joseph's - and we like to say we're from German(Paris)town so we can think we kick ass like most of 'em do, but . . . yeah. And that's literal. I don't think much of Germantown-ers, so the kick ass isn't figuratively speaking. Alright.
- Germantown - Germans/French
- Schnitzelburg (basically same thing, will explain if necessary) Germans
- St. Joseph - Germans/French/English
- Highlands - Irish
- Audubon Park - Those who think they can get away from German-ness :P Just kidding, I love all my SSM G's
- Parkway Village - French
- Camp Taylor - English/French
Kick-ass. Let me tell YOU. There's a ballpark/baseball incorporation :P called Germantown Baseball, Inc. but it's actually in Parkway Village. :X But, like I said, everyone wants to be a part of Germatown.
Also, a few people said some things that pissed me off or irritated me, but I will not say anything to give my fellow German/quarter Indians a bad name. So I will say nothing more on this subject ('less you want me to).
PS I'm mostly German . . . obviously.
PPS I love talking about this shit and also, I was looking at some of my baby pictures and I was the cutest fucking baby ever. And still am. :P I'll get some up when I can.

well im not from south america. I'm from the carribean (puerto rico) and Puerto rico was a US territory since 1890.
So its not usual here to find someone with german blood
-
Cristina has German blood (if I remember correctly), and so does a girl I went to school with, whose parents are both from PR. Therefore, three of the three Puerto Ricans I've talked to have German blood. I think that it may be more common than you think.
-
I don't have any German in me...but I think I do have some Hollandish in me.

my last name is VERY German, haha, it even means somethin in German. but i am only 1/8 german. My great grandpa came from there, and he's where i get the last name from. It even used to have Von attached to it, but we dropped it cause my name is already 10 letters and long enough.
I don't have any German in me...but I think I do have some Hollandish in me.

Hollandish
Like your family was from "Dutchland?"
haha...
I made that mistake too! I was showing my friend some pictures from my trip and he was like "who are those people?" and i said "those are some holland...ish people". He said "As a Dutch person, I take offense to that!".

Who knows how much german I am. I just know I'm german from the name. Or at least germanic. When I was a kid I was given a choice of my last name and another one. I was the only person in my immediate family with my last name. The other one was irish. Anyway, I like my name, but it is toooo long. It is 9 letters long. When I try to sign my name, I am always trying to rush through the letters, but I'm also trying to be neat as well. I'm always trying to write it like very neat and proper but become impatient because it is so long.
My german part supposively came over to america around 1900- 1910 or so. My mother's madien name is English. That goes back to before American Revolutionary times. *bayonets kev222*

I do have some German in me. Actually, I think quite a bit (quite a bit considering I'm American and I have everything in me)
No...I hate germans. I think a lot of jews do.
Don't blame you for thinking that, but I wouldn't go around saying that. It's just going to create more hate...
We don't need anymore intolerance in the world.
Hate the Germans then, not the Germans now...
-
please...jews have to be quiet about their religion because today they are still being hated on. No. I won't be quiet about it. They had no problem being loud about their hate for us and their love for hitler....so yeah, I still hate them...just as they probably hate us.
-
Germans . . .
Oh, that's right, you mean NAZIS. Nazis were spread to Austria as well. Where's the hate there? You hate one country because of a fraction of its population's beliefs. Quite mature, if I do say so myself. Hating Germans because part of the population, the Nazis, were a potent and persuasive (equaling) influential - not to mention delusional - group is like saying you hate America because a fraction of Americans are Catholics. Or Jews. Or Wiccans. Or Atheists.
-
It's true. I don't like catholics either. I thought you knew that though.
-
No...I hate germans. I think a lot of jews do.
Don't blame you for thinking that
I do. It's an irrational thing to think.
please...jews have to be quiet about their religion because today they are still being hated on. No. I won't be quiet about it. They had no problem being loud about their hate for us and their love for hitler....so yeah, I still hate them...just as they probably hate us.
Let's examine you're reasons for hating modern Germans?
1. You hate modern Germans for the actions of past Germany. I could understand this if Nazism was genetically inherited. Obviously it isn't and this reason is BS.
2. You hate Germans because some Germans still "hate on" Jews. Every country has these groups. Ever heard of the BNP? Does that mean you hate all British people too? What about the National Front? Do you hate all of the French as well? The KKK? All Americans? This reason is BS.
3. You hate Germans because "they probably hate us". You're basing your hatred on a probably? I wonder how many past Germans went along with Nazism because "Hitler is probably right". This reason is double BS.
Now let's deduce the obvious conclusion: Oops, you're prejudiced. Your obsurd attitude is not dissimilar to that of a Nazi.
Wake up. Like Cece said, you have cause to hate NAZIS (who exist in every country) not Germans.
-Kev
-
:D
And what did Catholics do to you? If anything, we should probably dislike you (and ancient Rome, but that I refuse to hate) for persecuting and executing us - Christians - because we didn't believe what your people believed.
I wish that people today had reason to hate or support things. Like these 11-year-old kids who are so anti-Bush, it makes me sick. Do you think they know why, or is it because the Dixie Chicks are? Or just like those 20-year-old rich boys, driving their Dads' cars and voting Republican, because their fathers do as well. Or these "Gothic" "Satanists" who wear a pentacle. Or everyone hating Catholics because of the previous years' scandals.
So much bullshit.
-
YAY. Another religion/politics thread. How wonderful. (/sarcasm)
I wonder why almost everything has to be turned into one of those.
-
Because talking about the weather is boring.
-
You know that's a lie . . .
-
you have cause to hate NAZIS (who exist in every country) not Germans.
-Kev
Germans watched my family in the concentration camps dying. I can hate both the nazis and germans.
-
What you just said is probably one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard . . . ever.
You hate Nazis because they hated Jews. Isn't that a bit hypocritical? "I'm going to hate Nazis and Germans (though bits of Germany had nothing to do with Nazism) because they hated people for of what they believed." Is that not the same as, "I hate Jews for what they believe"?
You're just as much of a biased ass as Nazis were if you're going to stick with your, "I hate Germans, Catholics, and anyone who isn't Jewish" philosophy.
There's no REASON to hate Germans, hon. Really, none at all.
Do I hate ancient Rome for what they did to the early Church? Of course not.
Time is irrelevant. Murder is murder. Don't bring up the fact that the Catholics' and Christians' executions took place 2000 years ago, and Holocaust was nothing shy of 65.
-
to answer the original question- i am not german at all! :-)
and to sayyouwould- how the heck can you hate people you don't even know? do you hate me because i am catholic? you don't even know me... so how can you say you hate most catholics? to be honest, being so judgmental in life is going to take away many amazing opportunities and learning experiences.. and furthermore, to hate someone for what they believe in, you will miss out on incredible relationships and friendships merely because you are judgmental....
i hope for your sake that you open your eyes and see that you can't hate people for what they are or what they believe in... you will lead a very sad, lonely life if you do not.
[/b]

This has been a little over stated, but in a different way (hopefull)
I do. It's an irrational thing to think.
I ment that I knew what she was coming from... I know, I didn't say that, sorry :(
Germans watched my family in the concentration camps dying. I can hate both the nazis and germans.
NAZIs did watch your family die. And yes, that's a horrible thing, no doubt about it!
Nazis arn't just German.
For Christs sake, we have Illinois Nazis!!
I'm still blown away about your hatred of Germans
I'M GERMAN. DO YOU HATE ME FOR SOMETHING THAT MAYBE, MAYBE MY ANCESTORS DID? DO YOU THINK I'M IN CONTROL OF THOSE PEOPLE????
My grandpa is a large percentage of German. And you know what, he was the one to first talk to me about all of the horrible things that occured in this time period.
Germans, the ones you'd walk down the street with, did not watch your family die.
I have a 17 year old friend who lives in Germany. Did she watch your family die? NO. She is 17 and lives in Germany. Why should you hate her?
I've had conversations with this girl about WW2 and everything.
She said that when she is taught German history, they say and teach that the holocaust was wrong. They admit their huge mistake (which the US doesn't, but that's another story).. They arn't saying how great Hitler is...
Now I'm sure there are people out there that do. DUMBASSES
I live in Illinois, and we still have idiots running around with a confederate flag screaming "the south will rise again" and threatening their black peers. Why? Because they are stupid!!! Racism is learned behavior.
RACISM IS STUPID! And to think--the civil war was HOW long ago?
Besides, if you'd like to open a history book, not everyone knew about the concentration camps. Yes, Hitler, but they didn't realise what a montser he was, untill he was already in control of too much power.
I've read holocaust survivor books, and it mentioned that the GERMANS around them, didn't know what was going on.
Did you know Hitler was a portion Jewish?
So why are you hating on Germans (and Catholics) when you don't like it when people hate Jewish people. Hmm... Maybe if you could... STOP the hate, eventually things might calm down.
Hate doesn't stop hate, it creates it.
So why do you pratice hate? Hating people you don't even know is just going to make problems worse, and it's NOT EVER going to make anything better!
((sorry for the poor grammar and spelling... I get extremely worked up about racism, and I just start typing. I guess that's what happens when you see your Black friends being called N's, and your German friend has been called Nazis right in your face. These are good people, just with a background a little different from other people. There is no need for hate))

What the FUCK?
Intentionally is not an antonym for consistently. You can do things consistently AND intentionally.
I must've missed the part when age is revelvant to annoyances and their irritating ways.
EDIT: Needed to fix that.

ARGH stop claiming your 'heritage' -no one cares!
havent we been over this before Rosie? Most Americans do care because our country is so new, the roots of our heritage aren't that deep. For example, my grandparents also speak the languages of their heritages, because their parents had just come from there when they were born. A lot of my family is still in Europe and stuff... So duh, of course I'm going to care. In school, I have done a few projects on heritage. So we even learn about them in school! It's an American thing, and it makes sense why we care. I just dont see why you can't figure that out, haha.
see... here's something i made for a project i did in highschool.
-
i agree with Rosie. The problem isn't about being proud of your roots and appreciating where your family came from and the traditions of those places. The problem is that Americans take it too far. All that "great American Melting Pot" Schoolhouse rock stuff is crap. The original colonists in America were explorers and separatists, and need I say more about the exploitation of the Native Americans? But this isn't a debate about who was here first and why, or who is better. The thing is that when I am asked by another person what I am, I say "American." Not Italian or German or Swedish or English. I'm an American, that's what it says on my passport, birth certificate, etc. America needs to get real and get their own identity. I'm not Italian. The only thing I know of Italy is what my mom cooks because that's how her grandparents taught her how to cook, she's never been there and my sister or I have never been there. The same is true for most other Americans who identify themselves with another ethnicity or nationality. So it doesn't matter to me "what" everyone else is and how far back you can trace your bloodline.

its what always happens. And my mom is from Panama, while her mom moved here from Spain, Her dad moved here from germany, It was my great grandparents on the italian side, and my grandparents on the scottish side
All of them practice traditions that from their heritage, its something to be proud of that you always remember where you came from. Rosie, people do care, because ive been asked multiple times in my life. Just because i live in America doesnt mean im some pos with no family heritage.
Si, this always happens and you know it. but you love to point it out, DONT YOU...hehe  :D
-
ARGH stop claiming your 'heritage' -no one cares!
I agree with Rosie, I'm sick of all this, "I'm part German, and part Polish, and part Californian, blah blah"
You are WHITE!
-
I just dont see why you can't figure that out, haha.
EVERYONE in the world had different 'roots' or a mixed heritage if you go back far enough. In my opinion its just a chance to show off and claim something that you actually have no direct link to. My family was from Ireland- I don't claim that i'm Irish, I'm proud of the country i live and was born in. You claim you're proud of being American and then you go on and on about a country you've been to for a few weeks of your life.
So I can 'figure it out' Holly but that doesn't stop me from thinking its a stupid thing to do.
-
Nikki and Rosie, I couldn't agree more. It's quite annoying actually, every time an American person asks another American what nationality they are... it makes no sense. You are American. Full stop. Your grandparents, great-grandparents, etc can be whatever but as for you? you are American. You can say there are still traditions in your family running from those nationalities your grandparents (not you!) are/were, but you are not Swedish/German/South African/WHATEVER.
Funny, it makes one think America is unsure of its own identity when, on one side, there's American flags in every corner and crap like "if you are not supportive of the government you are not patriotic" happens, and on the other hand everyone has to go on showing off about how many different places they can find their "roots" in. Stupid.
-
Just because you grew up in one country, it doesnt make your families' history obsolete. I think its pretty naive to say people shouldnt say where their roots lie. i know many famlies who stick very strongly to the traditions of their heritage, regardless of where they "live"
Id also like to state that im not supportive of my government, im not moving because im happy here, and to be honest i really dont care if you think you are great because you are from your homeland. Thats stupid, Its the people who raised you, and the people who raised them, and so on, that makes you who you are.
-

I think you're correct about people who take it too far, but knowing your family history and telling people if they ask isnt a very big exploit. This is what people are upset over.
-

We're not saying you should 'make your families' history obsolete'- that is NOT the point I, or Nerea, is making. I am saying, fair enough carry on traditions your grandparents taught you etc, but don't claim you're Italian every hour of the day. You say its naieve to not say where you roots are, I say its immature to insist on telling every man, woman and child where your great grandparents came from 100 years ago.
To be honest i really dont care if you think you are great because you are from your homeland.
You are mistaken. Again, that is NOT the point Nerea is making. Read it again Pete.

I vote there should be a new Forum added. The Useless Discussions Forum or whatever
It's getting a bit anoying to see every goddamn thread being transformed in a dissing-others/discussion thread. Everyone has to be right, everyone has to make their point, everyone has to be better than anyone else.
Just vote in the fucking poll, post why you chose that option, and let everyone have their own opinion, no matter how stupid it may seem to you.

Si, this board was made for discussions- thats its purpose. A lot of people here don't want to talk about nonsense and be silly all of the time- some people enjoy debates, and if they want to- they should be given the right to do so. Everyone will ALWAYS disagree but discussion is a way to see other people's sides and views- this board would be no fun without them.

I see
-
I wasnt only speaking in reply to Nerea.
I dont see what the big deal is about admitting if you have german descent in you, or mentioning your other descents Especially when its the subject of the thread. I have had people ask me. Im relatively sure anyone you know well probably knows you have Irish descent, no? I dont think anyone is bragging in here about something they arent. Your heritage doesnt make you better than anyone else, and i havent seen anyone in here claim theirs does. However some people are interested in their own heritage. Is it wrong to be interested in the countries your parents/grandparents came from? Im confused as to what is so wrong in this thread that we must all be rudely told what we are doing is wrong.

I think its pretty obvious that i'm Irish because of my name, but i never tell people- my friends just assume it- i would call myself 100% English as would all my friends. My problem is that people seem to want to claim this 'heritage' at every possible opportunity- and often as if it IS alluding to being better than someone else because they have more cultural mix, or have grandparents of a non american nationality- when actually it is relatively unimportant in the scale of things. I also completely agree with what nerea said about the contradiction i see in american society- i wish people would just be straight forwardly proud of being american.
-
Although since you mention i notice there have been a bunch of threads somewhat like this lately.
I just felt like since i posted my heritage in this thread (i dont believe ive mentioned it on this forum before), i was a target of your statements. It was merely conversation, and wasnt intended to be some special point as to who i am as a person,
I'd hope you think something like that is understandable, if not *shrug*, Its not worth dwelling on

I don't mind people pointing it out once in a while- its just a stereotype that Americans seem to reinforce so frequently- that they go on and on about their 'roots' and 'heritage'. There is clear proof of that on this board.
-
Ok to an extent i agree, But only because it doesnt bother me that people have been posting a lot of heritage based material lately. Also Im not one to claim anything special, and being American i dont really believe justifies who i am as a person very much. Im sure it has more effect than my descent, but really its materialistic to base myself in such a way as far as i believe.

If you really want to discuss this I think you are missing the point entirely. I am Italian. (I know you don't care.) Both set of grandparents came to America at the turn of the 20th century. They came with nothing. And they worked to make a better life for themselves, their families, their neighborhood, their town/city. They left family behind that they never saw again. My maternal grandfather was a tailor. My paternal grandfather worked on the railroads. My aunts were seamstresses in the garment district until they retired. My uncles were cops, firefighters, factory workers. One was a shoe maker. They helped MAKE America. I am proud of them. They were Americans because they wanted to be, they chose to be, they earned it. They gave as much as they got. I am sure the same can be said for many other countries. If there were more people around like that today the WORLD would be a better place. But you don't have to care.
So when I say I'm an American and make reference to my heritage it is because I recognize that I have not earned it. I'm American because I was born here. That in and of itself does not make me proud. And that should not offend you.
And what about my many neighbors who are not citizens? They live here. Are they Americans? They come to work or go to school. But they don't want to be Americans. Should I tell them to be proud?
So excuse me if I want you to know what kind of American I am.
And since I AM here I'll keep trying to make a positive impact on my family and neighborhood and town/city. Then I can be proud to call myself an American, because it's what I do, not where I am. In the mean time I will honor my lineage because if you forget where you came from you may forget where you are going.
Now get back to the music people...

I accept your point- what i don't accept is that it is different for any other country. You even said that its the case in many other countries. My parents do the same, my grandparents did the same- except my country's history goes back much further so its not easy to see the foundations of England. So what really gets me is Americans who claim it often and claim it like they have some special right to something- when it is no different for any other country in the world. People all over the world start anew in a country with no one on a daily basis but they don't rant and rave about their 'roots'.

Hey now, the US has done a lot of stuff wrong... but we can't hold a CANDLE to England.
Do the math on how many nations have had to revolt and declare their independance from England. Now do the same for the US. Now compare those numbers :)
Granted, England has had a few more years in which to screw up.....

African American should only apply if you immigrated from Africa, so really, Charlize Theron is African American, and you.. are not. :)
