Seriously. I've never done anything to anyone. I'm nothing if not polite, and bend over backward to let people have their way. Yet I've been fired from my latest job because one girl who's mom works there was jealous of me and was afraid I'd take her job- AND that job has been giving me horrible reviews when other places call their to verify employment status.
ALSO today was the move out inspection of my apartment. I'm very very sick but cleaned and moved out stuff for two whole days. I even went over this morning to re scrub the bathroom and the kitchen until the smells of the cleaning supplies made me puke and pass out.
Well guess what? I'm not getting ANY of my security deposit back! :evil: ANY of it! All $ 1,000? GONE.
'Well, you didn't scrub the floors. There's a nail in the wall. There's a piece of scotch tape. The kitchen and bathroom are a mess.'
Not even going to talk about the stuff in the place that have ALWAYS been broken and NEVER got fixed. THe shower, the light fixtures, the window, the toilet.....I'm getting to PAY for them to do that now.

This is SO unfair. I don't have a job, have been unemployed for almost a year cuz apparently I'm some sort of horrible person who shouldn't be employed anywhere...
I actually did need my 1000 dollar security deposit back, thank you. Bastards. And I have no recourse. I'm not re-cleaning that hell hole. I want my fucking money back!

This is illegal. Sue them. They cannot rate your performance only verify employment.

This is fairly standard. They tend to keep most of your deposit no matter what you do. However, 1 G is a little high. I might consult a lawyer and have him/her read over the contract and demand proof of damages.

Nobody likes a whiner and a quitter. If you want to know why no one likes you/will hire you, this may be a good indication why.
Employers like self-motivated take-charge types. Not cry babies and sissies.

Most places will give me my deposit back, but I think alot of people are ripping people off that way. I think people should find out if other ex-tenants are getting there deposit back after they leave. If there is a trend of giving noone their deposit back then people should make SURE they get their money's worth. Make sure there is at least as much damage as your deposit is. I know that sounds sinister but so is keeping your whole deposit for no good reason. They need to be taught a lesson. I don't usually do damage to a place....I mean I get my deposit back alot.
And so is my messed up advice........

I thought that was only in right-to-work states like Nevada. I didn't know that was a national thing.

To the best of my knowledge, this is true in every state. I can say with certianty it is true in OH, KY and IL.
And your suggestion about monitoring how apartments spend deposits is a good idea. Landlords have learned that most people won't fight you over a deposit, so they try and just keep it. If you raise enough hell, you can get some back.

It has happened in this country too. A guy sued his referee for giving a bad reference. All they're supposed to say is, "yes he did work here between those dates" (or "no he's telling lies").
Normally I'd consider this kind of lawsuit as "the world gone soft". Like those people who make injury claims after falling in the street because they're too stupid to look where they're going. But in your situation I would at least contact them and threaten to sue them if they continue dishing out bad references.
