Title: Thirteen
Post by: aleera84 on August 01, 2004, 11:09:18 am
Im not sure if there is already a thread about this movie so im sorry if there is.

I watched this film last night by myself and I have to say that it was excellent.
I've heard people say that mothers and daughters should watch it together because theres an important lesson to be learned and its great for descussion but after I watched it by myself I didn't really want to talk about it.
Its more of a thinking movie, well it was to me.
After the movie I didnt want to be sitting there with mummy talking about peer pressure and drugs etc.
But if your a younger person then maybe it would be an idea to watch it with ur parent.

Anyway enough of the blabbering. Thirteen is about a yound girl named Tracey.
She is from a broken family but seems to have it all together until she meets Evie, the most popular/beautiful girl in school.
Evie befriends Tracey and they start to take drugs, have sex and do everything that a parent wouldnt want their child to do.
Its an eye opener but its so brilliant.
If you can manage to get the DVD with audio commentary featuring some of the cast- Evan Rachel Wood (Tracey), Nikki Reed (co-writer and plays her first acting role as Evie) and the writer/director Katherine (i forget her last name) watch it aswell because there are some sceens that some people might not understand (like the ending) and they explain it.

Evan Rachel Wood, Nikki Reed and Holly Hunter are so believable and great.
Its also great to see teenagers as young as Nikki was to play a part in writing the script because teens can relate to it much easier.

I loved it  :D
The music was cool aswell, new acts and some fresh songs by Katy Rose.
Lemon by Katie Rose was written for the movie.

It made me cry. At the end when her mother was holding the arm where she cut herself..it was so emotional.

Oh whatever, it was good, but some of it was so ridiculously contrived.

I've lived the middle-class suburbia life and I've never known any thirteen year olds who've done coke.

In the end, I felt like it was trying to hard to be profound.

No, nor have I attempted. I don't care if it won a bloody Oscar, it's still contrived.

And that what's I think and there ain't shit you can do about it because it's my opinion :)

Yeh thats great, have your opinions.
I have mine aswell and im sick and tired of sitting on them.
I liked the movie very much thats why I sat here and wrote a bloody essay on it.
I wouldnt want to change your shitting opinions because I'd rather have my own.
At least I respect others efforts to express their compassion for something and not degrade them.

Thats all.....

ok people, that's what you have to remember, everyone has their own opinions and no matter how much you love something, don't take offense.

I saw this movie a few weeks ago and I thought it was good, especially since the one girl actually co-wrote it. But yeah some of the stuff those 13 year olds did was ridiculous. But I am sure in some places it happens. I wanted to smack Evie for planting the stuff on her and being such a biatch and telling her mom. Not to mention how mean she was to her at school. But damn she shouldn't have been so obsessed with the girl to do all those bad things just to be friends with her.

Yeh Evie was a bad person.
Im glad that Nikki Reed played her part instead of the original plan of playing Tracy.

I LOVED this movie. That was the first movie I ever cried at.  The scary part is that when I was that age, some other kids my age then were commonly going through the some of the same stuff. Katy Rose's song fits that movie perfectly!
Title: used to like the movie

:? i watched that movie, and i had once cut, but then i stopped. but once i saw that movie, i actually went back to it and recut. harder. i had been over it for a while, and i watched that movie once more and i was so close to cutting again, but a lot had changed since i had seen it last. i stopped and got help. but i was still gonna cut. and then katy rose's song came on in the credits and it made me think of my life after i stopped and i didnt cut.

like my mom said, it is a good movie, but there wasnt a super good ending to it.

I dont want to go into the whole cutting thing because I might say something wrong but im glad things have gotten better for you and that you have stopped.

I watched the autio commentary with the writers and some of the actors and the ending was explained, they couldnt do much with it because Tracey's story hadnt ended yet. Shes going to be 14,15,16 etc so thats why they ended it like they did.
Notice in the end she was still wearing her wrist band? That girl still had a long way to go.

"Monster" is one of the most fantastic films I have ever seen! I did my English talk on "Why I Admire Aileen Wuornos" (you can run now :P).. I didn't have a main based reason but there were some personal things why I kinda admired her in some respects. After my talk, the class was stunned! All in all, "Monster" has to be my favourite movie of all time and did make me sob my heart out, which I rarely, or not at all, ever do!

Back on topic! "Thirteen" was a fantastic movie in my opinion. Okay, we could say that "13 year old girls wouldn't do that kind of thing" but to be honest, I think the reason they made it thirteen is because thirteen is the first age which has the word "teen" as the ending. Maybe not, though. However, this would show you many of the evens and pressures which could occur when you hit your teenage years.
Evan Rachel Wood played an excellent part, and her acting was spectacular, as was that of Holly Hunter and Nikki Reed.

In my overall opinion, I thought "Thirteen" was created wonderfully and found the film enjoyable all the way through, although disturbing. I thought the camera-shots were good, too!

This movie hit me like a truck. I know people who have gone through things like this, I know what it feels like to want to do ANYTHING to fit it.
I cried my eyes out. It was done perfectly.

I've known people who did coke at 13 and I don't even pay that much attention to such things. Maybe people are just weird around here....
