(http://graphics7.nytimes.com/images/dropcap/v.gif)ANESSA CARLTON This wildly popular (and, somehow, underrated) piano balladeer — best known for her breakthrough smash, "A Thousand Miles" — returns with a spooky, dazzling new song, "White Houses," accompanied by an even spookier music video. (Find both at www.vanessacarlton.com.) Five short piano notes and then the verse starts, as Ms. Carlton floats down from falsetto to mourn the end of a beautiful, scary summer. She sings of "strange new friends" and "pretty-eyed boys" and then, "My first time, hard to explain/ Rush of blood, oh, and a little bit of pain." The video, directed by Sophie Muller (who has also made great videos for Bjork and No Doubt), is just as ambivalent. Two Vanessa Carltons perform in the same room; one plays piano and sings while the other works on a ballet-inspired — and, occasionally, computer-enhanced — dance routine. The pianist (envious? contemptuous? confused? anxious?) gazes at the dancer, but the dancer never gazes back, although she does crawl on top of the piano to sing the last verse.

like the anti gravity stuff i.e. the dance moves where she somehow gets up off the ground without both feet flat (not enough weight on one side of her body) on the ground... etc

Post by: CheapandEvilgrl on August 22, 2004, 10:35:45 am: I'd still like to hear what vanessa has to say about computer enhancement being used because it really doesn't look that artificial to me. I've learned most of the dance including the leaps so if I can do them I would think an SAB trained dancer would certainly be able to as well. The hardest thing she does in the video are those yoga tree pose turns. If you're legs are strong enough for that chances are you can jump pretty high.

But eh, she could say it was enhanced and ill just look oblivious so I'll stop rambling now.

the enhanced part (i think) is where she gets off the floor after twisting around

ahh yea..ok, I think I know which move you mean. And it does seem like its in slow motion at times.
