Ok, so I'm going on my 4th day of college life right now (it is friken awesome btw). I have come across many sorority girls and frat boys. Actually, about 80% of the people I'm meeting are in the greek system, cause they just happen to be the most friendly people. Every night so far I've been to a frat party at the same house, so I'm starting to become good friends with those guys... and the sorority girls are so sweet and helpful and I love meeting them! I know at a lot of school they have a stuck up, bitchy reputation, but not at my school thankfully! When I moved in to my dorms on friday I had about 10 different groups of sorority girls coming up to me, introducing themselves and wanting to help carry stuff. The frat boys did as well! :D
I'm definitly going to rush in the spring when its time... I'm just having trouble picking between a few, but I have tons of time and I've already been invited to hang out at them soon so I can figure it out.
Are you guys into this too? I think it's awesome and a great way to make good friends! Has any one been in one? Which one?
-
I just remember the frat house across the street from my dorm window having parties while I was trying to sleep. bastards.
That, coupled with the fact that I was attending school at UCD the semester Sorority Life was filmed, left me with a bad Greek taste in my mouth.
-
tricia - ooo - that would do it.
Cant help you out on that one, we only have.. one frat/sorority on campus..and this is their first year...
good luck with it though.
-
I can understand why having a frat house next door could get annoying! But I don't live near one.. I just enjoy going to the parties! Last night I danced on the coffee table with a hot frat boy (yes, I was sober)! :D haha, i'm just friends with him though, it was all for fun! great guys... tons of fun to hang out with. And they have a law that girls cant walk home alone, so we get an escort home every time!
-
i'm still into the whole frat/sorority thing! I still hang out at parties and I went to one frat's semi formals last month! SO much fun!
Actually, right now I'm in the process of rushing for a sorority! It's great... but SO tiring! We'll see what happens... Tonight we went to 4 houses, tomorrow night is 3, saturday is 2, and then Sunday is bid day. So right now i'm just narrowing them down... and on sunday if one i like gives me a bid, i'll become a pledge! There's only 2 I'd consider joining though, and only 1 I really want. I'm sooo nervous/excited! :D

Ugh. Pathetic.
Don't you find it depressing that you have to buy your friends?
The entire greek system is a sign of the decline of social interaction in our society.

ok... that was rude.
first of all, i have tons of friends outside of the system, so no, i don't have to buy my friends.
obviously you don't know that at my school we are required to live on campus, and sorority and fraternity housing is way cheaper than the dorms I live in now. So really... i'd be saving money. And on top of saving money I'd be living with a bunch of people I have things in common with and doing fun things... while making lifelong friends in the process. is that so depressing?

I <3 you Holly, but no thanks.
lol same here. don't get me wrong, I LOVE my friends on campus, but i definitely like having my own privacy and doing my own thing. plus when people tell me I HAVE to do things in order to be a part of a group, it tends to make me not want to do it, no matter who it's for.
but more power to you holly, i hope you get in to the house you want :-)

Yeah... sororities arent for most people. They get a bad rep at a lot of schools, but my school is different I swear. All the girls in each house are dedicated to the philantrophy (or cause) that they support. It's not about social, i'm a sorority girl at all, seriously. It's basically for the purpose of bonding over the cause you support and making life long friends/sisters.
Ive narrowed it down to 2 choices. Both of them have sweet, real girls I can easily talk with and see myself getting a long with. And the most important part for me are their philantrophies. Both of them have to do with children, which I love. One works with children who are lost in the court system, the other raises money for children with cancer (their main partenership is with St. Judes, like Victoria). Both causes are something I'm passionate about. Tonight I went to each house and helped work on projects. One house we made tiles to put on a play house, the other we decorated bags with color books and crayons in them. One of the houses is one that has been my #1 choice since the beginning of the year which is still my #1 choice, I would LOVE to be a part of it and i'm soooo nervous about the outcome i've almost made myself sick, haha. I can't sleep or eat, and i have a major headache and sick feeling in my stomach from worrying and thinking about it. The other house I love as well, I didnt give much thought to it at first, but the connection and passion I felt at that house tonight almost made me cry! I swore to myself I wasnt going to cry! haha. I'm dying to get my first choice, but i'd be totally happy with the other one as well... we'll see what happens! Wish me luck!

Hope you have a blast!!! :D

I seriously love my sisters. They're the best girls in the entire world! So sweet, down to earth, fun loving, etc. I couldnt be prouder to be a Theta baby (thats what they call us new members). These girls are soooo welcoming to me and my pledge sisters, showering us with presents, hugs and smiles. These girls are definitely going to pull me out of my shell, they're crazy (in a good way) and outgoing... when i'm with them I feel I can let loose, dance, sing, shout, etc. :D
Sheryl Crow, Amy Grant and Laura Bush are just a few of my sisters, haha, thats weird to say!

Yes. It is.
You are still paying money to be a part of a social group that you would otherwise not be allowed to be a part of.
Hence, you are purchasing friends.
There was a time when people used to make their OWN friends. And then WITH those friends they would organize social events and invite OTHER friends to them.
Some people still live that way.
Others join the AOL of the social world, the greek system.
YAY FOR NEVER REALLY TAKING RISKS IN LIFE! WOOO HOOO!
The good news is, every time I meet a frat boy or sorrority girl, I can feel confident that he or she will someday be delivering my pizza.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!
If I had a dollar for every time I heard a sorrority girl justify her decision this way, I'd be a RICH man!
BUT OF COURSE! THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT! AND NOT LIKE OTHER GREEKS!
HAHAHAHAHAHaH!

wow, andrew, you are the most naive person i have ever met in my entire life when it comes to this, haha, i thought a lot of other people were bad... you take the cake hun.
you obviously have NO IDEA what you are talking about. I AM SAVING MONEY BY BEING IN A SORORITY SINCE THE OTHER LIVING OPTIONS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE! That was an incentive for me to join. Rather than living in the crappy dorms, next year I'll get to live in a mansion, with a maid, a cook and my best friends. Who wouldnt take that up? Plus, I've always wanted sisters... now I have them. They are so welcoming and sweet. One of them even drove 90 miles for me yesterday. Theyve been there for me even before i rushed them. The first day of moving in... they were there carrying boxes and talking to me. That's the kind of girls my thetas are and I love and adore them. So dont you even think about putting them down, cause it pisses me off!
Oh, and you'll be ordering pizza from me? Do you order pizza from Laura Bush or Sheryl Crow? Nope. They're my sisters... would you be confident that they'd be bringing you pizza?

...
Do you even know what the word Naive means? Because given your usage here, I highly doubt it. It doesn't even fit in this discussion.
And you still haven't changed the fact that you pay dues and are told what you can and cannot do by your greek system. You still haven't addressed that fact that as part of your dues you inherit friends. You still havent' addressed that there is NOTHING a Greek system provides you that you cannot get for FREE with a good group of friends.
In fact, you didn't address 90% of what I said. Well done. Apparently they teach you debat in the Greek system as well.
So, my point still stands. Sororities and Frats are a waste of valuable human resources. They are a drain on our social skills and our cash. They produce bad people, instill bad ideals, and feed on the weak. Oh sure, you can give me your humanitarian activites BS all you want. But you and I both know that's the BS they force you to do so they get a better public image to counterbalance all the bad shit they do. I went to college sweet heart. All my friends went to college. At many universities across the US. I remember what the greeks were like.
Greek systems are still pathetic and sad. And it's still true that most people I know who went into the greek system amounted to nothing in their lives.
Obviously, delivering pizzas is hyperbole, but I'd hardly say Laura Bush or Sheryl Crow have made much for themselves based on their intellect. Those are really bad examples for you cause.
Also, key in on the word I used. "MOST." One of my closest friends is in a Sorority and both my parents went through the Greek system. Obviously, there are exceptions to any generalization. But they are a very small minority.
Edit: Also, line breaks make reading your posts much better. Paragraphs are really really neat. Oh wait, I guess your in a sorority now.... the rules of grammer go out the door. Like, OMFG! WOW!
-
Andrew, whats the point in being mean about this? Holly has clearly found something really positive in her life and if she is happy, then why should we criticise it?I accept that maybe it is a plus to point out the detrimental effects of the Greek system- but do you have to do it in such a manner? Its not going to change her mind, is it? Even if it did, you'd only be making her unhappy because she'd be disillusioned about something she really loves.
So maybe as an adult you should pick your battles. And not go around fighting teenagers on petty issues.

in the words of Vanessa Carlton:
"Who's to say we won't stay together?
Who's to say we arn't getting stronger?
Who's to say I can live without you?
Who are they anyway? Anyway they don't know
And you say we're too young, but maybe you're too old to remember
And I try to pretend, but I just feel it when we're together
Who is to say?
And who is to say?
And who are they anyway?"
The point being... you have no right to criticize me or my decision in doing this. its a cheaper living situation for me so i'm saving money by doing so. these girls chose ME to be one of them out of many girls... which obviously means that we have a lot in common and will get along. ive had a bad roommate expirience so i will do anything to avoid that again. these girls have my back and i have their's. i could use a support system like that right now. ive never really had the ideal siblings, now i have many amazing sisters.
now what about you, Andrew? i said how happy this made me and how much i wanted it, and then you go and put it down. that's really rude, you have a problem hun. do you get satisfaction from putting what people love down when you dont know what you're talking about? you can't understand my position on this, each sorority, each situation is unique. i hate people who pretend to know everything but really know nothing. maybe you know about the reputation the greek system as a whole has, but you know NOTHING about my relationship with mine and my main reasons to choose it.

She's an adult. This is two adults having a disagreement. And my "manner" isn't really defined by who I am discussing this with. I am vehemantly opposed to the greek system regardless of who I am talking to.
Either way, I'm not really arguing with Holly to cure Holly of this. I am more doing so to show everyone else reading just how completely the Greek system absorbs and twists people. It's sad and it's bad for the world at large.
Rosie, let me put it this way. You know how Bush got elected? Because young people band together and all just decide to follow whatever their "organization" decides to follow. The majority of Greek organizations are VERY conservative, politcally. Greeks vote overwhelmingly in favor of Bush.
That's becuse they do not encourage free thought. They encourage everyone to band together for the good of the "frat" or "sorority." And who do you think sets the policies of the greek systems?
Everyone put on their jack boots and fall in line!
It's my very political system I am fighting for here. Any group that discourages development of Americas youth as free thinking, socially capable, adults is a BAD THING.
I know girls who are EXTREMELY liberal if you sit them down and actually get their opinions on things... but by God they are registered republicans and they vote for every republican.... without even actually knowing what they stand for. Coincidentally, these girls are all in sororities.
-

That's lovely.
I'm sure you are a unique and beautiful snowflake. Everything about you and your situation and your sorority is different. Your sisters are different. Your organization is different. It's all new and unique.
It sure hasn't occured 500 million times with 500 million girls and those 500 million girls SURE didn't believe that they were unique and beautiful snowflakes as well.
This is an interesting quality I find in some women. They consistantly think that somehow THIS TIME things will be different.
It's why they go back to abusive husbands.
Good luck with that.
Also, I don't care if you're writing on a bathroom wall. If you want people to read it, then you have to make it READABLE. It's a sign of your intelligence. Poor writing or organization diminishes the validity of your point.
@Scott - That's awesome! But still not true. Me = Lord.

yeah, i'm done. i can tell it's totally pointless to have an argument with you.

I love how people can do this in debates.
I wish this worked in war. Like, if France in 1920 could have just said "You know what Germany, we don't want to fight anymore. So just pack up and get your boot off our necks."
And Germany would be all like "Ok, ok, ok. You're right. I guess I am the big asshole for starting all this. I'll apologize and I'll leave right now."
And then France could walk around feeling all smug about themselves and say things like "See, we are big enough to just let the fight go. It's harder to disregard the conflict than to continue it. Ha ha ha ha ha. Cheese and wine, etc etc."
...
OH WAIT! IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT BECAUSE FRANCE WAS GETTING THE SHIT BEAT OUT OF THEM BY GERMANY AND GERMANY WOULD SCOFF AT THEIR STUPIDITY AND CONTINUE TO POUND THEM INTO DUST.
PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER, SOLDIER! QUITTING DOESN'T MAKE THE ENEMY LEAVE YOU ALONE! IT JUST MAKES YOU AN EASIER TARGET. IF I HAD ROLLED OVER LIKE THAT IN 'NAM THE COMMI'S WOULD BE IN YOUR PRETTY ORANGE COUNTY HOUSE, WITH YOUR FANCY CARS AND REAL WOOD FLOORS, MAKING YOU EAT POTATOS AND RICE 3 MEALS A DAY! AND YOU'D LIKE IT BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T HAVE A CHOICE!
NO MORE USC FOOTBALL FOR YOU! IT'D BE THE COMMUNIST REDS VS THE CAPITALIST PIGS AND THE REDS WOULD ALWAYS WIN!
Bah.
*spits on corpse*

I understand where you are coming from. It's just that you're coming from a bad position. Doesn't mean I don't understand it. I mean, if someon says to me "2+1 = 5" and I say "no it's not." And he or she says "but to me, 1 is 3, therefore it is." Then I would understand where he or she was coming from..... but he or she would still be operating on a stupid system of mathematics.
I'm not trying to convince you NOT to join the sorority. It doesn't make one difference to me either way what you do with your life. I'm just trying to tell you that 1 does not equal 3.
Edit: Man... that post of mine up there was comedic genius. I mean... I WROTE the thing, and I just read it, and it STILL made me lol!
I'M A RIOT!

Well you should give a fuck. Do you know how stupid you look? When you enter a debate such as this one, you're not going to win many battles with "OMFG! LMAO! WHAT A N00B!!!212111111!!!!!"
Then again, your English skills do match the sorority girl persona, so I guess it fits in this argument.
-
wow... sorority girl persona? lets just give people lables. forget the fact that i go to a good college and the average gpa of my house is much higher than that of my college as a whole. and one of the reasons i was chosen is because of my gpa. i do well in school... but lets just judge my intellect on the way i speak on a message board.

He makes a good point. Your annecdotal evidence doesn't discount his actual point.
He didn't invent the sorority girl stereotype. He's just laughing at how you aren't in any way doing anything to hurt that stereotype.
It's not that how you speak neccesarily declares how smart you are. But it DOES declare how smart other people will THINK you are.
If you speak intelligently, people will assume you are intelligent. Obv, I already know you're a smart girl. But if I didn't know that, I sure wouldn't make that assumption from your last 4 posts in this thread.
I'm sure you will insist that you don't talk/type like that other places. But you and I both know that habbits carry from medium to medium. If you type this way on a MB then you probably type this way in papers AND THEN go back and fix it all before you turn it in. Often times we don't have the luxury of the time for that kind of proof reading.
Learn to type properly the first time and you'd cut out the middle man AND make yourself seem more intelligent in online mediums where proof reading is a luxury.
Remember, e-mail is a HUGE form of business communication and many e-mail spell checkers will miss specific kinds of mistakes.
Learning to communicate intelligently is the SINGLE most valuable skillset in most jobs.
-
This is true. I used to have excellent verbal skills until i got sucked into this online chat blabber. Now i have trouble typing up my tech papers at work because im just not sure what sounds best.
I really need to take a few english courses to get my groove back. Its expecially odd that my grammar skills were destroyed so easily since i always aced english courses

Oh, they fail FAST.
If I travel somewhere that people talking funny.... down south, in west virginia, canada, etc ... for an extended period, I pick up their verbal habits in like 3 days.
I start talking with an accent, or saying "eh" after every sentance.
It's sad. People pick up communication habbits QUICKLY. Luckily I still do a LOT of business writing and e-mail writing to professionals, so I keep my skills pretty up to date.
plus, still being in grad school doesn't hurt. We write a lot of case studies.

WOW a 25 year old and someone who is obsessed with a moderator off this message board picking on a poor girl who just got a little bit of happiness in her life!
Good job guys, you have probably just ruined something that Holly deserves to be proud of and is happy about.
I hope you're happy... Also you're life must be pretty dull if you spend so much of your time caring about Holly's and anyone else’s grammar.

Oh STFU. Seriously. No one wants to hear it. She's an adult and can handle herself. She's not a "poor girl" who needs defending by YOU.
No one is picking on anyone. As I already stated, I wasn't even addressing her. I was addressing the MB in general.
look, if I was tricked into a pyramid scheme I might run around being happy about it. Does that mean no one should tell me "Hey, you just got scammed!"
No. Sometimes you gotta break the bad news.

Nope.
There's a difference between making mistakes and making mistakes but not caring. It's one thing to make a few grammatical errors. It's another to KNOWINGLY continue to speak like a 12 year old child.

It's sad. People pick up communication habbits QUICKLY. Luckily I still do a LOT of business writing and e-mail writing to professionals, so I keep my skills pretty up to date.
plus, still being in grad school doesn't hurt. We write a lot of case studies.
*cough*
Nope.
There's a difference between making mistakes and making mistakes but not caring. It's one thing to make a few grammatical errors. It's another to KNOWINGLY continue to speak like a 12 year old child.
He's over here saying that using correct grammar on the Web is a complete must, then not even proofreading his own message. If you're going to ridicule someone for their grammar mistakes, you better make sure your own skills are flawless. Whether she's doing it on purpose, not caring if she's doing it, etc.

Oh, they fail FAST.

While the attempt at comedy is noted, typos and minor misspellings is not the same as refusing to correct ones grammar and punctuation.
I spell a lot of shit wrong and I make a lot of typos. But I make FAR fewer than 90% of the people on this MB.
BTW, the irony of the person who is trying to troll me here is absolutely savory.
Edit (edited again to remove blatant ad hominem): Holy fucking shit.
Did you even FOLLOW the discussion? Apparently not. Because if you DID, you would realize how what you are saying is COMPLETELY TOTALLY AND UTTERLY IRRELEVANT.
I am not NOW, nor would I EVER, jump someones shit for a TYPO or minor spelling mistake. EVERYONE MAKES THEM.
THIS IN NO WAY INVALIDATES MY POINT.
Now, please leave this thread and let your betters continue this discussion.
kthxbye.

excuse ME.... my BETTERS? I don't think so..... and I was saying that you shouldn't be ridiculing someone else's grammar when you're making mistakes yourself. Eff off and leave Holly alone. I'm done here.

Damn right you're done.
I love people who walk into conversations, say something non-sensical that has nothing to do with the current topic, then storm off when someone in the conversation tells them they are non-sensical.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Katie thank you! I luv ya! Don't worry though, they haven't ruined anything for me. If anything they've given my sisters and I a few laughs.
Andrew and Todd.. On message boards I’m usually quick and don’t think because I barely have the time to be here as it is. At school I have tons of things to do such as homework, cleaning, laundry, class, etc. Then since I live in the dorms I’m always wanting to hang out in the hall with my friends. Partying is fun too. Now my sorority takes up a lot of time as well, I go to my house about two or three times a day. Basically I don’t see why correct grammar matters on a message board. I barely have enough time to be here as it is, so when I am it’s quick.
I don't have any problem with writing papers after using bad grammar on message boards. I guess it's because I write papers more than I go here.

This is a compeltely different point than you were making earlier and completely invalidates your original defense.
Correct grammar DOESN'T "matter" on a message board EXCEPT where it makes your post difficult to read. Which is precisely why MY ORIGINAL POINT was that you should use linebreaks and spacing to make your posts more READABLE. Which you defended with "OMFG! ITS A MESSAGE BOARD! IT DOESN'T MATTER."
But, alas, it does.
Because a giant glob of random sentences with no spacing and no breaks by topic/audience/concept etc is difficult to read.
Making typos and spelling errors because you didn't feel like proof reading is fine. Making the same mistake over and over and not fixing it because you're too lazy/don't care is not.

well i am now an official member as of 9 or 10 days ago!
i cant explain how incredible initiation was! it was amazing and way different than anything ive ever expirienced. its kinda cool to think that it was a ceremony that has been done exactly the same way, but over 170,000 women over the last 135 years. Its weird to think that I share secrets with people like Sheryl Crow and Laura Bush.
I'm still loving everything! It's been great and I know it's only going to get better. I know bringing this thread up again is going to bring a lot of criticism for certain people again, but you know what? I don't care. I'm extremely happy with my decision to join. It's helped me so much.
