Title: Stop Congress from making the next iPod or VCR illegal!
Post by: Will on September 12, 2004, 07:31:43 pm
Anyone who has ever used an iPod, taped TV shows, or made a mixtape for their friend needs to read this! Hollywood is pushing Congress to pass a bill that could make the VCR, CD-Rs, and iPods illegal.

http://savebetamax.org/

In late 70s, Hollywood tried to make the VCR illegal. Now they're at it again. Back then, Hollywood's lawyers argued that because *some* people might use a VCR to make illegal copies, they had a right to sue *any* business that sold VCRs.

Fortunately for the future of technology, the Supreme Court said that any new technology with "substantial non-infringing uses" was legal and should be allowed to flourish. That wisdom, known as the "Betamax decision" (after VHS's short-lived predecessor) was great news for the economy: dozens of markets sprung up that would otherwise have been smothered by the fear of litigation and liability. And it was good news for Hollywood too: soon they were making billions in the same video rental market they tried to litigate out of existence.

But now Hollywood (and the major record labels) are trying to undo "Betamax" with a new law that would let them sue any business that gave their customers freedom to make legal copies. The music and movie companies claim they only want to ban p2p filesharing software like Kazaa. But legal experts say that dozens of products--even Apple's hugely popular "iPod"--would soon find themselves under the gun. We need to stop this from happening, and the time to act is now.

http://savebetamax.org/

This legislation is called the INDUCE Act, and it's opposed by the mainstream technology industry (eBay, Google, Intel, Verizon, and Yahoo have all lobbied against it) along with public interest advocates like Public Knowledge and even librarian groups. These companies and organizations are all making their voices heard in Washington, but now it's time that members of Congress hear from the public (you!).

We're organizing a national call-in day. The plan is: Senators who are siding with Hollywood against the public interest will receive a steady stream of phonecalls for as long as it takes. Think of it like a consumers' rights march on Washington that you can do from your home or your desk at work. Hollywood and the record companies have millions of lobbying dollars, but all we have are our numbers. If you think keeping the VCR legal was a good idea, we need you to act now:

http://savebetamax.org/

And finally, if for some reason you can't participate yourself, please forward this email to friends or coworkers who can.

Thanks for your time, and we hope you'll join this historic and extremely important event.

Sincerely,

Holmes Wilson

So, why should I care?

Just like with files sharing, even in the unlikely event that CDRs, VCRs, and mp3 players are outlawed, people will always find a way to cheat the law and do whatever the hell they want.

I don't own one either, but I think they are crap. Paying 99 cent per song. If I wanted to download a whole CD and it had 16 tracks, I'd be shelling out $16.00. I could go to the music store and pick up the CD for $10-$12, rip the songs, then put them on a better mp3 player (like an iRiver). And iPods are around $400--I could pick up one from RCA or iRiver for $149. I may not get 20 GB, but at least I can upload .wma files to it without any problems and it won't cost an arm and a leg to build my playlist.

Why do you care about wma? It's just a wrapper for several audio codecs, none that spectacular. Also, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to build your playlist. Hell, there is always Kazaa. Yes, the iPod PLAYS MP3s!

I also don't get how you can even compare a $150 iRiver (this? (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00024VTIQ/qid=1095377993/sr=8-2/ref=pd_csp_2/103-3692410-9685414?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846)) with 256 MB to something with 20 GB. There is just something about having your entire collection with you at all times.

If you're gonna compare an iRiver to an iPod, compare it to this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000EI9VR/qid=1095377993/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/103-3692410-9685414?v=glance&s=pc&n=507846). Same capacity. Same price. Much more bulky. Your choice.
Title: Stop Congress from making the next iPod or VCR illegal!
Post by: keith on September 16, 2004, 03:56:21 pm
I'm in no way comparing the iRiver to the iPod. Hell, the iPod walks all over the iRiver. The iRiver is just what I personally prefer. I only have about 100 songs I take with me, I don't need my entire collection of mp3s (about 10 GB) with me. The iRiver I have is 1 GB. Again, I know it's no iPod. I just personally don't care for it. And I like .wma, again, just my personal preference, but mp3 is better.

EDIT:

Nope but I don't want one:
- way too pricey,
- you have to use their stupid ITunes program to transfer the songs (i.e. can't use it as a portable hard drive),
- battery doesn't last long enough,
- I've had one in my hands and I don't really like the design.
I've read many reviews and the IPod is not my thing.
I'm not saying it's bad, it's just overrated.
I just had to replace my mp3 player and I bought an IRiver SlimX-550 because I still wanna be able to play cds as well: like when I'm in the States and buy a new album, I can play it right away.
Sure I have to burn mp3s on cd but I don't mind, blank cds are so cheap nowadays, I think it's worth it.
Just my 2 cents...

The hard disk players suck at the minute. Battery life needs to improve, they get too hot, they vibrate to much and crash. I got one of those 80GB Archcos video/audio things (which I'm basing all of this on, the iPod is probably better). Biggest piece of crap I've ever owned. On my last trip I actually took my old tape walkman in preference :) Lasted all the way there, during and back on two AAs

I'm with Andrew, minidisc (or maybe RAM mp3 players) are the best option at the minute. Tiny, reliable, batteries lasts an eternity. Plus even though I had 80Gig to play with I always ended up just listening to one CD anyway. The HD players will be better eventually ,but not now. IMHO

I have a panasonic mp3 cd player i got two years ago for 100 bucks.  Fits about 12 albums on one cd, blanks cost about 25 cents each, and if i want regular cd's i can play them too.  I agree completely with you, ipod is overrated, and hell, if the hard drive crashes youre screwed, if one of my cd's gets ruined. toss it

They are indeed too large and my MP3 CD player fucking broke.  Too many moving parts to carry it around everywhere.

My MD player is as solid as it gets.  I beat the hell out of it.

And these days with the NETMD stuff they write and encode just as fast as copying Mp3's to a solid state Mp3 player.

While the music per MD is less than the solid state Mp3 players, you can carry a TON of disks in a small space.

Did you fail to see i only use it in my car. its in my car right now.  I never carry it, its extremely cheap, 2aa's last 40 hours, im set on using some little tiny thing i would probably use and constantly have to change the songs i have on it or bring inside to recharge or change my playlist.  I keep the whole thing in my car, all i ever have to carry is a cd every now and then from my house to my car on the occasion i feel i need another 12 albums in my car.  Its pretty damn convenient in its situation.

Ahem.  Get an indash player then.  Better quality audio and no wires.

Also, I wasn't arguing that size was a factor for you.  I was simply pointing out that it IS, in fact, smaller than a CD mp3 player.

And you seem to have conceeded that point.  So there is no point in discussing this.

@Will - Yes, MM uses a lot of memory.  But that is LARGELY because it loads it's AWESOME database into RAM.  The database is what makes the program so bitchin in the first place.

Umm... what does that have to do with anything? Those numbers are how much disk space the executable and accompaning files take up, not RAM usage.

Yeah it's big, but it was only $170 at Best Buy.  For a savings of over 200 bucks, I'll take the bigger player thank you very much.  And I can still fit the RCA in my back pocket and that's all that matters to me. :D

Yeah it's big, but it was only $170 at Best Buy.  For a savings of over 200 bucks, I'll take the bigger player thank you very much.  And I can still fit the RCA in my back pocket and that's all that matters to me. :D

Sounds Nice!!!

I want to buy and mp3 player but dont know what kind to get, but the one you got seems cool.  :D

I know. I'm too lazy. It's not like I actually spend much time in XP.

I didn't actually pay any attention to the picture.  I Just assumed you were throwing up the usual complaint about MM... which is it's RAM usage.

You were using it's HD memory usage as a complaint?!?  WTF, yo?  Who cares about 20 meg of HD space?!?

Wasn't complaining. Just finding some way for MusicMatch > iTunes = true.

Smartass.

MM has built in burning software and a bitchin database engine.
