Title: Streets Have No Name
Post by: BWilli on September 29, 2004, 12:53:40 pm
So VC covers the song....but has anyone heard the original by U2???

I know a few people who haven't.....

Everyone should listen to the original song...it's a classic...

Okay, I am listening to the U2 version now.  V's is so much better.  And either her intro is not as long, or it is so much better it SEEMS like it doesn't go on forever and ever.

I do like V's intro to the song...V's is a little over five and half minutes long....not sure how long U2s is

U2's version is 4mins and 36seconds on their Best Of (1980-1990). The version on the album it originally came from (The Joshua Tree??), may well be longer though. It does rock though, I'll be interested to see what Nessa does with it.

The Joshua Tree version is 5:37... 8O and so is Nessa's. That's a bit creepy. The intro for V's is almost exactly the same as the one on Joshua Tree, though.

The song is okay, I've never been a fan of U2.
Maybe it'll grow on me eventually...

As much as I love the version, nothing will beat the original. I am not a huge fan of U2, but their version is amazing and V's is a great cover, just doesn't quite get there.

i agree...i love Vanessa's version, but there's something about the original version that hers doesn't have. Although I really love the piano in Vanessa's version

I like Vanessa's version better mostly because the piano sounds so cool in it and I'm not a big U2 fan. It was one of the only songs by them I liked.  I'm one of the few members here old enough to have heard the original at the time it was popular.  :cuss:

It'll be awesome to hear on her tour with just the piano.

reason ever to order the Japanese version of the album. So impressive 8)

For those of you who haven't seen it; the Classic Albums rockumentory on
U2's Joshua Tree gives great insight into the production and recording. Its
worth noting that working on The Streets Have No Name created incredible
friction in the studio, to the point the master tape was almost thrown out!

I'd love Nessa's arrangement so I can make a new wallpaper featuring it

The Japanese version of Harmonium or just the pre-release version as a file?

I hunted around online but its clear from the distinct lack of Piano chords in

It's supposed to be the oldest living organism in the desert. They can't put a time on it, because when you cut it, there's no rings to indicate how old it is. Maybe that's a good sign for the record!

I think U2 were aware when they recorded Joshua Tree that the symbolism
included a sense of timelessness about the music, that it could live forever

Perhaps that's what attracted V to Streets in the first place; the 3rd single
didn't achieve the same #1 success, but was certainly worth resuscitation

Quote from: "Bono"
The desert is fascinating to me. As an image, it's both positive and negative to me. The desert is a location for music; it's dry and arid. Some of the music is dry and arid. It's wide open space for music.

i was thinking about creating a transcribsion for the song, b/c i was sitting at the piano yesterday, just playing something in D Major, nothing in particular. but there's only one problem: i don't have the software to do it with, much less know how to upload it up on the computer to post on this forum. but there's one problem with it, but it's nothing really, with the song. the piano has an echo, and a 2-part harmony. but i think i can handle it.

but if you want the song, [WTSHNN] then you can go to her official website to the forum, and then go to the thread on the first page that says something like, 'ONLY HERE; YOU'VE ONLY GOT 7 DAYS'. good luck to anyone who listens, b/c Lord knows, i love the song, and i think that they made a huge mistake when they didn't include the song on Harmonium.

Oh my lord!!!  Where The Streets Have no Name is by far one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, I love her cover so much better that U2's (sorry Bono)  I just can't get over how beautiful it sounds, I just love the cover of it!!!  Hats right off for V, I just love it!!!!  Man, some people say that remakes never sound as good as the original, but I really think Vanessa nailed this one, she should have put this on all the copies of Harmonium, it is gorgeous..... 8)
