ANNIE
Watch her as she flew
Deep within the blue
A day out from the county ICU
There’s nothing you can do
Someone gently says to you
The doctor says now it won’t be long
Try and live up to the moment
And I hope that I don’t blow it
What is it in my that she hears?
It’s just a song she likes
Her little arms around my neck
And a dying girl whispers in my ear…
Tell me now can you feel it?
I’ve been keeping company with ghosts
She comes to me like a piece of summer
She come to me on the days when I need it most
Well summer dies and nothing lasts forever
You’re so fine the way you stand up to your fears
Summer dies and it’s just moments we had together
I’d give my bones for you to get a few more years
For you and I
Oh Annie
More to life than trying to survive
Oh Annie
My boyfriend took pictures of me as I held you
I’m traveling now and the loneliness brings me to tears
Summer dies and it’s just moments we had together
I’d give my bones for you to get a few more years
For you and I
Oh Annie
More to life than trying to survive
Oh Annie
Stronger than the hands that hold you
You sing along to the song on the radio
If I drank too much and I am reckless
Just this once would you forgive this sin?
Hold on in days gone by
Tell me now can you feel it?
I can’t keep this all to myself
She’s elegant
And she means it more
Years for you and I
More to life than trying to survive
Oh Annie
Watch her as the flew deep into the blue
Watch her as she slips away from you
I’ll keep fingers crossed always for you
This is such a sad song!! but it's really good, and the lyrics are meaningful. They remind me of my friend Ashley, who died on her 17th birthday from cancer.

Well, since we're talking about the meaning of Annie, I might as well float this question: What do y'all think she's referring to when she says "I'd give my bones for you to get a few more years"? I just thought it symbolized her devotion to Annie (as it's no small thing to give one's bones), but my sister brought up the idea that perhaps Annie has lukemia, which apparently is sometimes cured by a bone marrow transfusion. 8O

interesting theory... i just thought it meant because she's so devoted to Annie and she would give her something she needs so bad just for her to live longer... i this case, her bones. *shrug*
either way.... this song makes me want to bawl my eyes out. it's so sad and the melody is just BEAUTIFUL.
-
I was always more caught up by the piano in the song, but the lyrics are really meaningful if you actually pay attention to them, lol.

LMAO!!
Dude, seriously!! ;)
-
Like, Andrew (Kulp), I also got teary eyed.
Such a beautiful song.
-
this is the best song on harmonium if ya ask me
-
I think this is my fave song on the album (i know I said "who's to say" in the other thread, but i changed my mind). it gets better everytime I hear about it...
Just an idea... maybe ATR can do a fundraising thing for a children's hospital (or leukemia research if this is in fact what the song is about). We can call it "project Annie" or something like that...
-
hey i think someone said something in another thread about "the day out from the county I see you" possibly being "the day out from the county ICU" as in intensive care unit. I agree about it being the latter. i think it fits with the song.
this song makes me bawl my eyes out whenever i listen to it now.... i once read a true story called "what was good about today" about a little girl named Sara who has leukemia and dies, and it kind of reminded me of the book. But it makes me cry because what she's singing about is really happening to kids everywhere right now.....

Wow, that would be awsome! We really should do that.

I love the melody of the song, and it´s cool cuz it´s one of those songs that as I looked closer, read the lyrics or played the notes, I just loved it more =)
I made a lil simple simple wp

I love this song. It keeps growing on me every time I listen to it.
So who do you think Annie is? A friend? A relative? A fan? I've been wondering all day...

I think shes a fan. Given the whole "it's just a song she likes" part.
You know how artists often visit dying fans as kind of a last wish come truth thing? I'd guess that's what it's about.

Which could maybe explain the drink too much thing... If Nessa's her idol she might be upset if she went out and got drunk and made a spectacle, especially if she was only eight or so and is taught that it's bad behavior.

hhm yeah ... could be that .. though, I think it's not the fan that's upset or dissappointed in Vanessa, I think it's more to do with VAnessa being upset and dissappointed in herself? She feels guilty. The innocent and elegant Annie has been given a short time to live, however she is trying to live life and make the most of the time she has left ... and then there are some other people that WASTE this same time getting drunk, thus becoming unaware of the world aroud them and wasting this same time that annie is trying to savour. When you are drunk, you are unaware of living. We all think that getting drunk and being reckless is cool, we think we are invincible, but we are not. And Annie has reminded us about the beauty of life, so the question posed is not a proper question. More a rhetorical one ... Vanessa isn't really asking for Annies forgivenness, but because she feels guilty poses the question
though this is just IMHO :-) It's another point of view, and my friends know I have A HUGE tendency to read sssssssssssssssssssssssssooooooooooooooooooooooooo much into things and get very intense ;-) LOL

I so remember that ... you know it's been a whole year 2 days ago since my uncle passed away! :-? It's all going so fast!!!
-
you're right, it could be that as well. i didn't read over the lyrics before i posted, i just remembered that she had said it.
-

Nah it could be anything!
But that's what I thought when I first heard it!
-
Yeah... i think it is true that Annie is just a fan who touched Vanessa's life.
I know exactly how she feels. Ashley was the greatest girl I ever met. I met her the summer before freshman year of HS, and she had the greatest love for life of anyone I've ever seen. She had a pure heart and didn't have a mean bone in her body. Her smile could light up a room. If she saw someone having a bad day, or lonely, she would always go up to them (even if they were a total stranger) and make them feel welcome and loved. Her ambition for life didnt fade when she got diagnosed, even when she knew she didn't have long to live. She kept being her sweet self, and still cared immensely about the people around her. She could see the brightside in the darkest situations. She brought our whole class She's our angel. I have an angel on my desk right now that represents her, and I think about her every single day. She makes me want to be a better person, and if i can be 10% the person she was, i'd be happy.
-
Holly, you are a very sweet, thoughtful, kind, giving and caring person. This person must have been totally amazing if you think you need to be better.
-
the song doesn't need to be non-fictional.
-
Like some others, I was too caught up in the piano and melody than the lyrics.
Actually, I never get songs meanings untill I read them.
That is a sad song.
Beautiful piano...
My thought about the bones part, is that maybe she just ment she wish she could give anything (not neccesarly bones) for her to live... Almost like saying she'd give her life? I don't know. It was the first thing that popped into my head.
-

Ehh, it's anyones guess. Personally, I'm horrible at interpreting songs and poems.
I guess we won't know untill the night Vanessa tells us this horribly sad story about a girl she wrote it about, and leaves us in tears. :(
-
hey guys, just wanted to tell ya i posted the notes for this song on the "harmonium songs" thread
oh and... i don't think it's about a fan. i think it's about her friend that got sick or something. because the part where she says that she held her in her arms or whatever... just wouldn't work for a fan.

Yup.
There fact that you keep her memory alive in such a vivid manner Holly means this girl isn't really "gone" she's just not here, but her spirit lives on ... thru' you, thru' me now after reading your post about her ...
Making the world a little bit better than when it was before you were born is what living is about.
-
I dunno but when i heard this song at first. ( I dont wanna be all corny) but I started to cry or rather felt like crying..I dunno

I don't think you'd be alone either ... actually I KNOW you wouldn't be ... ;-)
you wouldn't be corny, nor weak nor anything like that ...
I think the song is MEANT to inspire thought and emotion ...
-
You aren't alone, don't worry. This song is amazing and one of my favorites definitely!
-
I agree with Kevin- i think its a fan who she went to visit- like she says about a 'day out from the ICU' and the 'song she likes'. I also don't think the fact that she held her necessarily rules the fact that Annie might be a fan out of the question- i think its perfectly understandable for Vanessa to hold a dying, little girl in her arms. Such a sad song- think how amazed Annie's parents must be though! I love the line "Stronger than the hands that hold you.".
-
whether it's a fan or not. I like to think that it is. It makes the song that much more bittersweet. Vanessa is such a talent with her words. I bow down to her greatness! I love this song.

I suppose the question about Annie has been answered ... with the Brazilian interview clamicas posted ...
http://forums.nessaholics.com/viewtopic.php?t=6922
I wonder if she actually ends up passing away like in the song ...
This song was a reality shock when I first heard it ... it really moves one to tears ....
And now there's a "real" story behind it ... It's not just a song anymore. It's not a random abstract song that "can" or "may" happen ...
Vanessa is sharing an experience ...
Annie existed and now she's not here ...
it's so so sad.
-
are you sure she is not around anymore?
-
are you sure she is not around anymore?
V never said she died...
-
are you sure she is not around anymore?
Well I've always assumed that yes she did .. :-?
My justifications ..
The doctor says now it won’t be long
Doctors ONLY say this when they are almost 100% sure that whatever it is is incurable ... otherwise, doctors always hold out hope ...
But even still there is the possiblily ... no matter how small for a miracle.
It continues...
She comes to me like a piece of summer
She come to me on the days when I need it most
Well summer dies and nothing lasts forever
HOW does she come? Not physically obviously .. she "comes" in rememberance ... and in thought ...
when people low and down and out with the world some give up and think of how much they CAN"T do, but others find inspiration in the memory and thought of others .. those that fought for life and struggled to SURVIVE ...
So Annie is the summer, becuase in the winter time when it's raining, and the weather is melancholoy and you're not feeeling so bright, you think of the summer, and summer is traditionally associated with fun and happiness and freedom (you know 3 months break from Uni etc etc)
Annie is likened to the summer because she hold hope and fun and happiness and viabrance, so when the V is down, she remembers Annie ...
but of course nothing lasts forever, and the "summer dies" ...
More to life than trying to survive .. ......
You’re so fine the way you stand up to your fears
Summer dies and it’s just moments we had together
I’d give my bones for you to get a few more years
Annie accepted the fact that she didn't have long to go, and rather than trying to hang on with whatever treatments they proposed ... "trying to survive" she accepted that there was nothing anyone could do ...
she feared death, as we all do ... but she stood up to it and accepted it ... and faced it head on, and made the most of the rest of her time?
And then, now that Annie has passed away, all we have are the memories ... we can keep a person "alive" thru' memory, but they are physically gone.
AND THEN ... FINALLY
Watch her as the flew deep into the blue
Watch her as she slips away from you
"flew into the deep blue" for me symobolized
her spirit ascending to the heavens ... the blue being the sky.
and it's the past tense ... FLEW ..
so it HAPPENED .. not "will happen" or ther eis a chance it WON"T happen ... it's HAPPENED because she "flew" already.
Slipping away .. ascending higher and higher ...
When some one slips away, it generally means they're passed away ...
ok I think I'll go cry now ... :-(
I don't know.
I'm wrong ... I'm right. It's how I heard it.
Somone will have to ask vanessa ;-)
-
woah...
hey I think I might know where Stevie Nicks is on here.... you know in the end of the song, the second "watch her as she flew deep within the blue" line, there's like backup vocals going like aaahhh aaahh aaaahhh ahhh ahh ahhhhh or whatever.... I thought that sounded kinda like Stevie... *shrug* :?
-
are you sure she is not around anymore?
V never said she died...
How exactly would you explain, "I've been keeping company with ghosts?"
I'm not clear as to whether Nessa is saying it or if Annie is (a dying girl whispers in my ear), but either way, if Annie said it, duh, it's obvious what's going on, she's DYING, and if Nessa is thinking it then "she comes to me like a piece of summer... she comes to me the times when I needed it most" along with the ghost line means that the memories of the *dead* Annie are ghosts... In that case it can be both figurative (memories) or literal (dead Annie's ghost).
Either way, I think she's dead. If she was dying then... :-\
-
Harmonium`s tracklist has a song ¨Annie ¨, who is she a fan,a relative? (that´s my question hehe)
VC:She´s a girl I met on tour. Her real name is Victoria. She is beautiful and intelligent, but she is sick...leuchemia
She is sick. Meaning she's still alive.
-
well maybe victoria is just victoria, and annie is based on victoria, but not totally 100% ... so maybe annie is dead, and this other girl is not?
okay, that prolly made absolutely no sense.

Thanks so much for that dear :-)
It's changed my perspective a lil' :-)
I don't know, there is still too much figurative talk of "slipping away" and "flew deep within the blue" and "ghosts"
But hey it's not my song :-)
And i'm truely happy that in THIS story,
not only did they find matching donors
but they DIDN"T NEED THEM! And Victoria will be ok thanks to her OWN immune system!!!
GO THE BODY! :-)
Maddest props to V for bringing this to ppl's attention, and bringing into the spotlight.
I am still way too chicken to give blood, but next time i'm there ... I might give it an extra thought.

But her name isn't Annie :(
Obv the song is inspired by Victoria. But the fictional Annie dies in the song. Z reasons this out pretty well.

Actually, being left handed is recessive. So when the genetic culling and testing finally starts, there will be no more left handed people. :dr evil:

The Annie in the song dies?
But what about the last line?
"I'll keep fingers crossed always for you"
What? To go to heaven, or survive ?

for some reason when i hear the song i think of this little girl

I want Annie to be a single... it's better than Private Radio
Eh, I like Annie too.
But it's not "radio music". Private radio is. Highly overpaid music execs will thus put PR on. :?
-
But I really wanna know is when will they release the 2nd single!!!!!!???
Oh well, I hope the people that heard Annie in the news program stuff liked the song..

I don't want to compare Vanessa to Dido.. But Dido last single was chosen by the Germans.... She's chosen the most played song... " Sand in my shoes ". So I think if Annie is playing at radios.. There's a big possibility to be one single.. I hope
-
Meh... Annie just isn't radio material. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful song - one of the best on the album, but it's just not something one would hear on the radio. I think Private Radio would be a better single.

haha, i still cant get enough of this song
-
Well.. well.. what do I say? I'm not an anti-Private Radio.. It's a good song.. I love it and hear it everyday on and on. but It's out of Vanessa style and too short... So I keep voting for Annie to be the next single and Who's to say...
-
yeah who's to say fo sheezy!!!
IF they ever actually release another single

I wasn't sleeping either.

Did you see her today?! On Channel ONE?
-
I always knew Annie was a good song, but today when i really listened closely to the lyrics, i realized was a sad song it really is!!
"...the doctor says it wont be long..."
"A day out from the county ICU" ICU=INTENSIVE CARE UNIT!!
"...shes like a piece of summer..." (a few lines later) "..and summer dies and nothing lasts forever..."
"I'll keep fingers crossed always for you."
It is such a heartrendingly good song.

Only Vanessa to write a good song like Annie
I admire Vanessa more because of her lyrics...
I love Annie...
-
I admire it to. I mean, she must have really inspired Vanessa.
-
I love Annie too... and Tori...and her family. They're so sweet. They helped me with a paper I was writing and they just rock.

Annie is an amazing song. It has such power, it moves me so much... it proves how talented Vanessa is.
