Title: Harmonium Review In Entertainment Weekly
Post by: nosticker on November 05, 2004, 05:39:11 pm
I'll save you the trouble/expense by typing it here:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enlisting the help of producer/boyfriend Stephan Jenkins(Of Third Eye Blind), the 24-year-old Carlton is trying to show us that she's matured since 2001's Be Not Nobody.  Singing about unicorns in "Half a Week Before the Winter" does not help her cause.  Amid the dippy Dear Diary lyrics and gratuitous string sections, however, are a few treasures: "Afterglow", "Papa", and the catchy single "White Houses" suggest Carlton's melodies might stand a chance on their own.   B-

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I get the feeling that these reviewers may not even be listening to the same album that I am.  See my Rolling Kidney Stone rant elsewhere.  Or read the review in RS yourself, if you can find it amongst the at least 900 pages of ads.

Um... Fuck that guy.
Her lyrics are more well-written than his review, at least.
I don't think they have the same album, either, considering HAWBTW is like one of the best songs on it... And so what if she sings about unicorns?? Obviously he didn't have to study much about symbolic prose while he was in journalism school.

...or symbolism, metaphors, similies, lyrical imagery....maybe we should write to EW?  I subscribe, and am disappointed.  Then again, lots of albums got savaged in this issue. VC's album was one of the highest rated.

"I think we’re at the lowest point we’ve been in the history of the business. The quality of music, the lack of melodic originality, the lack of discernible lyrics, like in rap music. It all adds up to one big minus."--Brian Wilson, 2004

Thanks for posting that, I'll have to look at my copy of it... maybe write an angry letter  .  I subscribe to EW, but it gets delivered to my home, which doesn't do me too much good here at college, heh.

My issue hasn't shown up yet, but I agree with the reviewer on "Winter" A B-?! Ha! I was thinking they were going to give it a  C-

I'd hardly call "Papa" a treasure, in fact, it needs to be buried.

He should have mentioned "She Floats" or "Private Radio" - the two best tracks on the album.

1/ This review sucks ass, it could have been written by a 10 year-old...
2/ BnN was released in 2002, not 2001. Check your info mister!

Vanessa's music is supreme. I'm just too big of a tool to know it. Please forgive my ignorance.

A "B-" EW review is actually pretty good. EW doesn't give many "A"s because that would be the same as ranking it in the same area as some of the greatest recordings of all time. Face it--Thriller, Harmonium is not.

Hey now. MJ is the shit. His last album though.. let's not discuss that.

But I don't get the song either. WHY was she singing about vampires and unicorns? :|

Hey, I love Vanessa, but she's no Laura Brannigan.

what are vampires?  the label perhaps?

what are unicorns?  Vanessa?

Vampires are growing tired... coats of white will turn to red...

Still Katia, the album is no Thriller. Or the Chronic. Or Sgt. Peppers.

Therefore, it wouldn't get an A from EW.

Hell, BnN got a C-.

LOL... Keith... i wasn't defending any of that.

I was simply answering my opinion on the vampires and unicorns thing... cuz i too thought it was crazy to have a song about vampires eating unicorns :)

*goes to put thriller in the CD player and dance along*

*dances with you to "Wanna be Startin' Something"*

I find "Winter" to be quite random. I think she was trying to be all deep and meaningfull with her lyrics, but really, she ends up sounding just plain silly.

*sigh* Yet the "Harmaniacs" think this album is LyKE OMg!!! the Best AlBUm EVAR!!!!1!1!!11oneone!!1!!!thistypinglikea12yearoldAOLerfadisgettingold!!1!!
