when my friends ask me to describe her music or ask what type of music she is... i dont really know how to respond... shes so original. i cant really compare her to any other artist... and i dont want to say pop because... i dunno i just dont like that catagorie even though i listen to it... i guess i just dont like the label... lol if that makes any sense...

she has some songs with a pop feel to them but the majority of her music is a style all her own. I wouldn't call her albums as a whole pop. I think to compare her music to anyone, only Alanis Morrissette or maybe Tori Amos comes to my mind that she has a similarity to

If music could have sex, then there is an orgy going on in Vanessa's head.

Vanessa's music is "singer/songwriter". I know that's not a real genre, but I've always felt that the category "singer/songwriter" encapsulates all pop musicians with some artistic integrity. It's a way to seperate the Vanessas, Michelles and Deltas from the Britneys, Christinas and Spice Girls.
Basically: Pop, but not too pop :)

I think V describes it best herself. In an interview somewhere (and I forget where or when, although I think it was an older one) she said that her musical style is "classically infused piano-rock." I think that describes it really well, but it doesn't really help when you're trying to give someone an idea of what she sounds like...

Well, I can be crazy but all my family and my friends think that Vanessa is Jazz and Classical... Only ATM, OD, PB, WH, PR, WTS are pop....
Swindler...Red Ditty, Wishing and Hopping, Greensleeves, Twilight and others are Jazz and classical...
I think she's not pop... only pop..too pop

Doesn't matter if she writes her own music and plays a piano--it's still pop.
-
The first songs of her albums are pop songs and the rest of both albums is something weird kind of goth.

Yeah, but everyday it's harder to distinguish one from the other, I mean Christina and Britney write their own songs now and are in control of their music and Christina's upcoming album seems to be great and original, and Nelly Furtado who I used to think was a pop musician with artistic integrity has some new really Britney music, she even has a choreography on one of her new videos and she's showing more skin than she used to.

Delta Goodrem...artistic integrity.... ?
Man, I can't stand her. Did you know she was a complete Britney clone, wearing Britney outfits and dancing Britney-style, with back-up dancers etc. until her first single ("I Don't Care") didn't sell... so then she discovered that playing the piano and singing different songs did sell, and decided to create that image instead. That "nice girl-next-door sweetie pie" image. The "I am an artist because I play the piano" image. She is so fake, and tries so hard to be inspirational it sickens me. I find her so transparent, and it seems that lots of people don't want to see that just becuase she had cancer. It's sad that anyone would have to go through that, but it's also sad when having a disease is your greatest career move to date. Vanessa is in a whole other league and I would love to see her kick Delta's ass.

How about...
good music
or
Vanessa Carlton Music
or at the very least
alternative music.
-
Yeah. "Alternative" could be pretty much anything that's an alternative to the mainstream.
-
Some songs are pop, but I don't know what to classify the others as.
