Title: Anti Virus
Post by: Si on November 29, 2004, 08:43:47 am
What's a great anti virus program (that doesn't make my pc really really slow)?
I've tried searching the forums for a thread like this, but the only ones that came up were pretty old, I think they're newer programs/versions now

Are you willing to part with any cash? Or do you need a free one.

Best free one that I've come across is AVG

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php (click "download" at the top and then click on "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition download" from the list)

Hint: The best free anti-virus software you can get is Linux (or another *nix, like BSD, if you swing that way). I've not had a single virus, adware or spyware sinse I installed it ;-)

Win 32 Rontokbro.U@mm

Anyone else here with this that can help with tips would be appreciated - I
can't make lasting changes in the Windows registry and can't restart WinXP
in Safe Mode - so I'm looking at the option of targeting run processes HERE (http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM%5FBRONTOK%2EAC&VSect=Sn)
with a copy of Process Explorer (http://www.filehippo.com/download_process_explorer/) and hopefully setting Symantec AV on to it!

Peace

Aaron

My computer was as Katia said, a little sick. I downloaded the AVG and it seems to be better. Just wondering if when the trial is up they will come back.

Thanks for bringing this back from the depths.  :)

This was from 2004, heehee  8O

Aaron, I wish I could help you. I hope you'll fix this asap!
Let us know, please.

I have bought a new pc (*gasp) in the time between this post, and when I made this thread, a better one! (amagawsh!)
I am still using AVG Free, and haven't had any problems, so it must be working ok.
I also regularly scan my pc using Spybot Search & Destroy, and Adaware.
Do you scan your computer regularly, Aaron?

When I use F8 as requested in the boot sequence it seems to ignore it - I think it let me start
in Safe Mode just once earlier, but I didn't have the other utilities aboard I plan to use now

Yes, but not my flash drive   Seems I picked up this Trojan from the internet café I'm at now

I tried running the Process Explorer utility earlier today only to have it shut
down by the Trojan. I'm resorting to Mediaware Task Manager (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/mwtaskman.html) as plan B

Update; WindowsXP Installer is now compromised by rontokbro.U@mm aswell, so I haven't had
any success trying add alternatives to Windows Task Manager. Interestingly, some errors in the last
few days have actually brought XP's Task Manager on screen, but only momentarily. I have just put
a few registry fix utilities on my flash drive, so hopefully I can get a bit further with one of these

I was worried one time I sent something to a friend with a Mac and she said the samething, they couldn't get viruses.

Macs can get viruses. It's just that they aren't as common. Virus writers are more interested in writing viruses for the system with the largest userbase. But viruses for Windows wouldn't normally affect Mac OS X.

well then people need to stop buying macs to be trendy! because if the mac user base becomes as large as the windows one, then we'll have evil virus writing losers after our poor innocent computers :p

Title: Rontokbro.U@mm update ;-)
Post by: NESSAussie on August 26, 2007, 10:55:16 pm
Finally rid my system of the Win32 Trojan; its last attempt to remain on the
system included creating 5 hidden folders in the System32 sub-directory of
Windows. Symantec AV actually didn't pick up on these; I spotted them as I
watched the file reference log during a full system scan. The spread.mail.bro
reference couldn't have been more obvious. Hopefully I can keep any more
of these of the system with Symantec's updates for mallware & spyware
