Hello,
So this topic has come up several times recently where I have asked a few people what their opinions are on sex before marriage. So here is a poll! Now, just because you've had sex and are not married doesn't mean your opinions can't change.
-katia
-
My opinion has changed to a ayup!
-
I'm not married, I have sex.
*buys Katia a drink*
-
yes.
-
depends ...
depends on if you're an idiot or not ... because ...
so much is involved in a sexual relationship.
For me the 2 main things are ... children and STD's ...
A USA study has seen an average of 2/3 of people under 30 will have some STD or another .. now while some are curable .. as in their symptoms are curable .. others like herpes .. can lie dormant before they show up again ...
Now personally, I really don't want any form of STD EVER! I look after myself so well so that I DON"T get sick, and I don't want some idiot giving me a virus or sickness ...
there was a doco on TV last night actually where the partner is unfaithfull to his woman partner and has another "nightlife" and give her the AIDS virus, but he didn't know he had it himself ... she was faithful to him, but went to the doctor sick, and the doctor told her then she told her partner.. anyway, that's how it happens in Africa as well ... multiple partners sprading the AIDS virus.
Now i'm not saying everyone who has sex before marrige will get aids .. no of course not ... you'll be smarter than that, and use protection. (undies!!)
Trust is also a huge part to play ...
THa'ts the first one, the second one is children. There's a huge committment if one makes a "mistake" .. and if both parties aren't ready rah rah .. hardly anyone actually discusses it .. unless it's a "serious" relationship ..
ok so that's STD"s and pregnancy ...
but at the beginning I say, depends on if you're an idiot ...
because of course otherwise you'll take precautions ... but
(a) no one likes to think that they are idiots
(b) no ever thinks it wll happen ot them.
So PERSONALLY, IN MY OPINION .. I say GENERALLY no ...
Again .. different circumstances like if someone'd been going out for ages blah blah ... I see no problem ... but again, I WOULDN"T ...
So it means maybe that I have less experience ... maybe it might be awkward ... but .. meh ...
Actually it depends on whether or not you believe in marrige!!! Marrige is a religious institution more than anything, and lots of people aren't a religion! So what's marrige to them? Nothing!
I am a religion, and it makes it easier for me to say no :-)
-
Yes. If you love the person and you're safe then i see no reason why not. I don't have a problem with it at all.
-
I don't "believe" in it. I just do it.
Sex, if handled properly is fine.
-
i see no problem with sex before marriage
-
me either
-
The only thing for me is I refuse to just go out and have pointless sex with some girl I meet at a show or club or something, before I'd think of going in that direction, it'd be known to both her and myself that the relationship was strong and we both agreed it had reached that point.............I mean sex isn't a toy (like many people believe it is), and therefore I personally choose to treat it with respect
-

I don't see the problem with casual sex. As long as both parties are clear on their expectations, then why can't they both have an enjoyable experience?

Not that I deem it wrong for other people to do, it's just a way for me to remain a straight-edged old fashioned kind of guy that should've been born in the 20's or something

kay i totally agree
-
I mean sex isn't a toy
Unless it's a sex toy.
I accidentally put "nope", but I meant to put "Yes". I disagree with my church's stance on that....
Yeah.

well coming from a 15-year-old female, i say no.
i think there is more of a concern of getting pregnant, for me, than a STD. because really, having a baby changes your life, and plans for your life, hopefully for the better, but it may not be what your were planning on till you were 30, and i don't think it's worth taking that risk.
and yes, STDs can change your life, but a baby is another life, and a much bigger responsibility that will be there forever, unlike some STDs that can be treated and rid of.

:roflmao:
What you're assuming, though, is that you marry someone just for the sex, which I hope is not true for most people.
I voted no because of religious and philosophical beliefs. I'm also described as a hold-out from Victorian Britain.
-

LMFAO Only you would put it that way!!
-
well...
normally i would say no..
but..
uhh...
..................if ...
nah i'll say no
:-\
-
well, i don't mean i believe two 12 year olds should have sex...but there are different views for different situations.

If you buy them mail order you don't...

As my mom says " This is looking like a Cabaret of blind " but that's O.K.
Who buy shoes by mail order?
Funny... :?
Steveau is totally right... I agree
-
does anybody here buy shoes without trying them on?
I've done that many times. I'd just pick them up at the store in a rush making sure they are the right size and are what I want them to look like on the outside. The same could apply for picking someone up from the bar, really. How many times have you done that at a bar, right size, looks good, ok....lets go?
I don't have a problem with sex before marriage, but I'm a BIG believer in contraceptives though. Several forms all at once. I can't wait for the male pill. I really can't. What is 99.9%(female pill) of 99.9%(condom) of 99.9%(male pill)?

 I personally don't believe that there's any such thing as premarital sex according to the Bible. God instituted marriage, but He never sanctioned a particular rite or ceremony to begin it. In the earliest times, the man simply went in to where the woman was on the night of their "wedding" and joined her, and from that moment they were husband and wife. So basically, I believe you are married to everyone you've ever had sex with, whether legally or not. Think about that. 8O
-

Even if I don't remember her name? ACK!
-
I may be too much of an old thinker for my own good, but for me, sex is like the ultimate expression of love for another person, which is why I don't personally feel it should be used as casually as it is, and though I don't fault those doing it, I mean it's a free world, I just personally see it that way. Now, if you look enough you'll note that you can love someone that way without being married, and in that case, I would have premarital sex, but other than that, probably not............and since I don't drink it only solidifies that, no "boo boos"

Not JUST for the sex because let's face it, the easiest way to kill sex in your relationship is to get married but sex is definitely a part of the marriage. If you're planning to give up variety in your sex life (which is what marriage entails) you'd better be damn sure it's worth it.

Who buy shoes by mail order?
I do. I wear a size 15, they don't have anything in my size at the stores, thus, I must mail order or get them online. So, there.

I think it's fine, as long as you take the right measures. From that point on, it's up to you if you do it with someone you've met at a bar or with someone you've been going out for 2 years. Personally, I'd wait til I felt safe and confident engouh in a relationship, but that's just me and I respect whoever wants to have casual sex. It's their problem.
-
Yes. Have some.
Edit @ Nerea - I don't know if I would call casual sex a "problem" :)
-
I didn't know if it was the most appropiate word, but meant it just as an expression. I don't actually think it's a "problem"

honestly i dont know, who am i to say?
i have said i was going to wait till marriage my whole life, and i still think that way. but i havent been in a committed relationship and my feelings may change when i am. all i know is that i'll have to have a hell of a lot of trust and feelings for the guy, which means a long relationship.

Just have fun as long as your doing it save :D
-
Yes.
But that doesn't mean going around throwing yourself at everybody.
I believe in sex before marriage, when you are in a long, stable relationship OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL.
I don't want to have sex in high school, I mean can't high school be confusing and complicated enough? I sure think so. I don't want sex to make it more complicated.
-
I say yes..I know Im only 15 but I agree with sex before marriage as long as you truly love that person and you have spent a while with this person, you trust them, and respect them then I suposse it's okay and as long as you do it safly and know the risks

Love is a myth.

Love is a myth.
had some bad experiences, have we?
-
I said Yes. But it definately does depend on the circumstances. Two people who have sex, in MY opinion should atleast have given it enough thought as to find out if your partner has any STD's. I don't believe in random hookups with people who you've just met at a bar or club.
-

You don't believe in them? You think people are lying to you about them? It's a giant world wide conspiracy to fool Gina into thinking random hookups at bars happen, but really they don't! IT'S ALL A GIANT MYTH!
People who talking about 'no random hookups' are really just saying 'I haven't had one yet, so I am going to condemn them till I do'
-
Oh trust me, I have good reason to not believe they're right. Of course they happen, and of course they're always going to happen but... personally I don't ever intend to take someone home from a bar that I just met and have sex with them. Plenty of people think that's okay, and that's fine- it's a personal choice. Most people I know that have done it though completely regret it the next day.
-

I'm gonna get back on what I said.
I still think you should have fun and you should be doing it save, but don't go around bars and pick up guys... Who knows into whatever kind of trouble you're getting. If you know the guy for a long time, and trust him, then you can have all the fun you want... :)
-
I've decided I don't want to wait until marriage. But... I definitely going to wait till it's meaningful and i've been in a long term, trusting relationship with someone I love. All I want is my first time to be special. And definitely SAFE!
-
All I want is my first time to be special. And definitely SAFE!

It's not a key difference, it's a difference of no consiquence. Context (i.e. when people say that they don't believe in sex before marriage, they invariably mean that they don't condone it, not that they don't believe it occurs) and common sense (i.e. the idea that any adult doesn't believe hook ups at bars actually occur is an absurd idea) make it patently obvious what she meant.

It is a difference of major consequence. For those who actually grasp the language, that is. When I say "I don't believe in Santa Clause", I'm not saying "I don't think Santa Clause is appropriate." I'm saying "HE DOESN'T EXIST!"
When I say, "I don't believe you." I'm not saying that you are innapropriate. I'm saying I don't believe something you have said, done, or in some conveyed to me.
Saying "I don't believe in X" to convey dissaproval isn't even an accepted convention. It's something said by people who haven't had enough education to know better.
Never leave it up to your audience to infer your meaning especially when your language (when misunderstood) might make your audience think "wow.... what a twit."
It's like saying "irregardless" or "I could care less." Or using "they" to refer to a single person of unknown gender. Just because there is a niche of ignorant people who say these things, doesn't make them ok or correct.
This is significantly different form saying "I'll be a monkey's uncle" or "right as rain" even when these statements make no real sense (or at the least, most people don't know what they litteraly mean/meant)... because these are accepted cliches. The previously mentioned phrases are not.
-
It is a difference of major consequence. For those who actually grasp the language, that is.
My point is not that you aren't technically correct. You are. What I'm saying is that Gina's intended meaning was completely obvious. So much so that you must have put effort into deliberately misunderstanding her. i.e. Nit picking.
Whether this was was for the purpose of a joke or an attempt to stamp out what you consider to be an unacceptable cliche, I don't know. Either way, it is a tangent point that has nothing to do with her initial statement or the thread focus. Troll ;-)

Following the rule on the single subject of unknown gender does make some yucky sentences, especially if you need to refer to "him or her" more than once.
Of course I always follow every rule - yucky or not.

that's not what I meant by it though. I don't believe in them, as in I don't believe that they should happen.... I didn't think you'd take it so literally. I'm not stupid, I know that it happens.
-

WHatever happened to the aesthetic value of the English language? Doesn't proper speach have it's OWN value?
Plus, you do risk miscomprehension ESPECIALLY when you introduce non-native English speakers. Such as Townies. And never assume gramatically incorrect statements that people in YOUR region are familair with translate to other regions.
We have rules for a reason.

Yes, rest assured, it did get a chuckle IRL. But I didn't have anything else to say in response (I was going to say something along the lines of "or Americans." But I didn't think I had the best footing considering my English language education was so blatently substandard) and I usually like to avoid n00bish "I am just writing to say lol" replies.

Even though logic may tell you that the use of "they", a plural pronoun for a singular subject, such use when the gender of the subject is unknown has been common in English, even to the King, since at least the 1600s. Reference: Merriam-Webster Usage

I have always written 'they' in reference to a single person and i have never got anything less than an A in every exam i have taken. I got A*s in both English language and literature!
Moreover, i find it funny that Americans seem to take particular care with grammar and criticise us for it, when you are the ones who botched our language in the first place. 'Thru' instead of 'through' is just one of the ways in which you have massacred the english language. I rest my case.

Sweet heart, it's not an American thing. It's an ENGLISH thing. IT's true of British Grammar too. I know, because I've had this conversation with a limey on another forum.
Don't babble about your A's. That just means your teacher didn't care.
And it's YOU europeans and your txt messages that came up with things like "thru", not Americans. We didn't do that. You did.
Use your head for a minute and think about it. THEY is PLURAL. HE and SHE are singular. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

My point was not whether it is correct grammar or not- but simply that it is a perfectly acceptable thing to say. My point was that i find it amusing how Americans insist on correct grammar and place such a huge emphasis on it when so many cannot even write coherently, let alone well.
My As were externally marked by a set of independent examiners who marked 1000s of scripts from across the country, not a teacher dear.
Oh and HAHA for being proven wrong about 'thru'- in NYC i saw signs which said 'thru street' which clearly indicates that your botching of the English language has nothing to do with 'european' text messaging.
-
Do you not think this is ever so slightly off the topic of pre-marital sex?!
But I have to say, I absolutely can't stand bad grammar! I spend my life correcting my friends' grammar and it does tend to annoy them somewhat!

Signs also use X-ing. It's short-hand for places where you can't spell out the entire word. That doesn't mean we accept it as proper usage. If someone used "thru" in a document they were writing for me to give to a customer, or in their resume, i'd rip them a new ass.
What is accepted is irrelevant. What is correct is all that matters. People accept a lot of improper usages and spellings.
And most Americans aren't like this. Just anal ones who took a lot of writing classes, like me.
Accepting improper usages is a slippery slope.
Edit @ Lucy - no one stays on topic. It's pointless to try.
