I saw an interview with Emmy the other day- she is absolutely beautiful and so so talented. She's only 18! I hated the musical on stage but hopefully it'll be better on film.

Who has seen this movie? It came out today.

I was soooooooooo excited to see it. I am in love with the musical. I'm more passionate about this musical then i am about any other musical, artist, etc (yes, even Vanessa, tho she's my fave artist). I have grown up on this music, singing it, and I LOVE it! So ofcourse I was excited for a movie. I went to see it today and I was impressed! It's nowhere near as good as the musical, but I wasnt expecting it to be. I saw it twice when Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford were in the cast and no one compares to their voices, and you cant get the same feeling seeing a movie as seeing it live anyways.

The Phantom was played by Gerard Butler. He was really good, and definitely handsome. His voice was a lil raspy and had more of a rock sound to it than I was expecting. He was a good actor, but his voice can't compare to Michael Crawford at all. But once you get used to his character... the voice is good I think.

Christine Daae was played by Emmy Rossum. She is definitely the star of this movie, hands down! She is an incredible actress and has an amazing voice. Not as pure as Sarah Brightman, but still REALLY good!

Raul is played by Patrick Wilson. He is very good as well! He is a great actor with a great voice!

I cried 2 times throughout the movie. The first time was at my favorite scene, when Christine and Raul are singing "All I Ask". That part is great!!! And then again at the end when Christine, Raul and the Phantom are in the dungeon. My other favorite scenes were Prima Dona and Masquerade.

If you like the musical and the music in it... definitely go see it! Or even if you havent seen it and like this kind of thing, GO! I'm definitely seeing it again! I LOVE IT!!!!

edit:
one more thing to add... haha. i think they did a good job in sticking to the story of the musical. some parts where added that you dont see in the musical, but i'm thinking maybe they're from the book (which i want to read). but they go word for word on much of it, which I loved. it's mostly the same... just a lil different. but i'm o glad they didnt change it up too much

I was readiing the script of the broadway musical and listening to the soundtrack again tonight... and I noticed even more that it is sooo well done the way they were able to do much of it word for word.

the only part that really sticks out as not being in the musical is the part of how the phantom gets to the opera house in the first place. am i right that this isn't in the musical? i could be forgetting it... when I heard the song, "Twisted Every Way", I wondered if that was new cause I had totally forgotten it, but then I found it on the soundtrack, so I was wrong.

I really like the song tho... how could I forget?

“Twisted every way, what answer can I give?
Am I to risk my life, to win the chance to live?
Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice?
Do I become his prey? Do I have any choice?
He kills without a thought, he murders all that's good.
I know I can't refuse and yet, I wish I could ...
Oh God - if I agree, what horrors wait for me in this, the Phantom's opera?”

if you love the music you'll be blown away by seeing it on stage! i dont know who the current cast is, or how good they are... but i'm sure it'll be great! it's the 2nd longest running musical ever, been going for almost 17 years! i havent seen it since Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman were in it.

that's a good thing...

last i saw it in nyc i was quite disappointed.  probably has something to do with the fact that the whole musical was written for michael crawford and sarah brightman's specific talents.  when i saw it in sf years ago (while it did it's 6 year run) i was rather impressed tho

I saw the film today and thought it was splendid.  I saw the stage show when it was still in Toronto years and years ago and I fell in love with it then.  My current vocal teacher played Christine in the production in Munich, Germany for ten years before retiring.

Anyway, I liked the film very much.  Visually it was much better than seen on stage.  Emmy Rossum is amazing, and Minnie Driver was so PERFECT for the diva Carlotta.

**SPOILER**
I did NOT like that the chanedlier did not fall until the end.  It's supposed to fall at the end of act 1 (which is right before the Masquerade number).  I don't know why Schumacher put it during the Don Juan scene.  Point of No Return is such a tense song anyway it doesn't need to added excitement of the chandelier fall.  And i thought the Phantom makeup could have been much much much scarier.  You could barely tell how greusome he was supposed to be.

I also think Toni and Rosie would agree with me how silly it is that Meg the ballerina had her pointe shoes on the ENTIRE time.  In scenes that took place hours after the production numbers there she was in her pointe shoes walking down scary secret corridors, lol.  I know as soon as I was done with the show I ripped those suckers off fast as I could.

So, I saw the show on Thursday night on Broadway.. IT was Spectacular!!!  It far supassed my expectations.  The cast was excellent.  the staging was awesome...I did theater in high school, so I have a special appreciatation for that stuff...they way the did the boatride to the phantom's "lair" was so cool.  The music takes on a whole new meaning now that I've seen the context.  :D

i thought the movie was really good. i like the broadway version better, but the movie was still very excellent, and worth every emmy nomination it got.  my favorite part of the entire movie was Masquerade ... it was amazing!

and can we talk about how awesome Minnie Driver was!? who knew she was so freaking talented!? I really think she put on one of the best performances out of the entire cast.

i saw it a few weeks ago and have been listening to the "soundtrack" quite a bit lately.  I really enjoyed Minnie Driver as well... and i love how Emmy Rossum portrayed Christine... I even like her vocals on a few of the songs over Sarah Brightman  8O  Gerry as the Phantom was horrendous and i wanted soo much to like him and Patrick as Raoul continues to grow on me.

um, there's a song book for phantom you know. you can get it on amazon for 12 dollars. It's written with the vocal, guitar, right and left hand on piano. The songs are in the same key as the songs in the movie. It's great to have if you want to play all your fave's

Yes. My friend pointed out to me that she never closes her mouth in the movie, and i'm like "yeah right". So we watched it and we counted that she closes her mouth a total of 3 times. *shrug* haha

But oh well, she sings great.

Me too! I've pretty much been listening to the soundtrack nonstop for a while now... I understand obsessed! I prefer most of the movie versions of the songs over the original versions, but not always.

I did notice that she always has that kind of expression, but I never really paid attention to how often her mouth was open. I noticed that she never speaks at full level, she's always whispering unless she's singing. lol it's like she's afraid the phantom is eavesdropping on her all the time. I still love her though.

I always thought so...
I love this movie...it's one of my favourite movies of all time...Minnie Driver was delightful...Gerard Butler was fantastic.. and Emmy Rossum's voice was just wonderful........
I still think the original cast was better:nobody beats Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman.(in my opinion)
