Title: Car Bomb Near Bilbao
Post by: neos on January 18, 2005, 10:22:04 am
Here (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/01/18/uspain.xml&sSheet=/portal/2005/01/18/ixportaltop.html)

I was home this afternoon when the bomb exploded. It's barely 5 min from my house so I even heard the loud "boom" and immediately thought it must be a bomb. Turns out the street where the car bomb exploded had been attacked before. I have close friends who live in that street, who've had their houses damaged both times car bombs have been put there. The whole area surrounding that street is full of friends of mine and my family and people I know. This makes me so angry

Shit shit shit Nerea. I'm SO glad you're okay. I can't  believe the Socialists are even thinking of engaging in dialogue with ETA/Batasuna. I can't even imagine how angry you must've been. Who lives on that road?

Love you nerea, so happy you're safe but angry about this whole thing!

Ugh, that's shocking! I thought it was rather quiet around the eta? I kinda hoped they'd found some other 'hobby', you know, like the Ira who have seemed to switch to drug-dealing instead of killing people. It's all about gaining power I guess and not so much about their ideals, they're just an excuse. If they can't gain any political power then they try to gain power some other way.

So let's hope the eta finds a hobby of his own soon. I'd propose sticking to Basque traditions and have them fight bulls..., without a decent training that is.

Shocking .. appauling .. just crap .. it's all just crap ...

Bad attention is still attention, and bad publicity is still publicity ... it's crap and .. I don't know what goes on in the mind of some people ..
With all that's happening in the world .. with ALL that's happening in the world, you'd think ... well the thing is, you may think, but I may think, but others don't think.

A relief to hear you're safe ..
I hope no one you know was hurt .. physically at least ..
In my thoughts ..

I know... socialists and their bloody dialogue. Just don't get me started on that (you are the one person who knows how angry that can get me lol)

I saw the images on the news today and so many people's houses were windowless... my brother told me about some of his friends being home when it happened and having the windows exploding in front of them - scary. It's a really popular area, full of people from my class at school and my class in uni, all sorts of acquantances, etc - you even know some of those people too, though you might not remember

It was really quiet actually. Nothing too big had happened in the Basque country for ages. It just pisses me off that it's the same people who get bombed here every time, because they belong to a certain social class and have certain political beliefs (which in general differ from the rest of Basque society... and I am part of those who differ)

This is just a wake up call, you know. Just to remind everyone that, while they try and talk about the end of ETA, they're still there and could cause some serious damage if they wanted to. I was talking to Rosie yesterday and we both agreed that the more attention they get, the more seriously they take themselves... honstly, I think ETA's principles (and in general nationalist principles) are hilarious, they're incredibly ridiculous, worth laughing about if they didn't cause this kind of trouble.

I just don't see a way out of this ever. A nationalist party controls education in the Basque region, therefore there will always be nationalists, among which it'll always be easy to brainwash a few and turn them into mindless radicals.

That is really sad.  I cannot believe it was so close.  That has to be horrifying.  I am glad you're alright, and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Wow.

Have you even read this thread? or the article?

EDIT: Notice how the only people who really know whats going on here are the people who live outside the US.

Uh.  Maybe cause you're as close to Spain as I am to St Louis?

I am pretty up to date on what happens in St Louis.

How up to date are YOU on what happens in St Louis?

Exactly.

Now stop being such a eurocentric elitist.

It's not the fault of the American people that they don't know everything that's going on in the Bask country.  We are so busy here creating news of our own that there's simply not enuff time for our media to cover it all, except for possibly the 24-hour news channels, which, I'm sure, only an intellectual few among the general population of this forum ever watch.

Personally, I would like to know more about what is going on there because ever since my high-school Spanish class, Bask culture and its origins have carried a certain intrigue with me.

In my view the proximity is irrelevant- the news in this country isn't just about Britian or the countries near it but Africa, India and Asia too. Andrew, you know all too well that proximity and news interest don't necessarily go hand in hand- i couldn't tell you the latest story in the city nearest to me but i could tell you whats happening in Lebanon at the moment. What i have heard from many americans (and seen for myself) time and again is american news only reporting what happens in America- the fact that it is a huge country does of course have some bearing on the situation but should not stop Americans from thinking the world outside their state line is worthless or non-existent.

Oh and by the way, its the Basque country.

Again, I ask you, how much do YOU know about the latest news in the US?

I can assure you there are things going on in California that we get reported here that completely get left out of your news.

It IS about proximity.  You only give a brief lip-service to the fact that the US is so large.... but you gotta remember, North AMERICA is so large.  Canadians and South Americans get most of the same news we do in the states.

NA and SA america cover a pretty damn large area.  I feel fairly confident Europe misses out on 90% of the happenings over here.

The news only has so much time each day to cover events.  It can't talk about EVERY single event in every single country every single day.

We mostly cover our GEOGRAPHICAL area and then our major allies.

If it is about proximity then why does Zee know whats going on? Surely as she lives in one of the biggest countries on earth the Australian news should be all about Australia and nowhere else? But Zee does know whats going on because i know for a fact that Australian news presents a much wider picture of the world.  So no, my argument is not eurocentric and no, its not about proximity.
