Title: Intoxication

If you do, how often do you drink? How many times have you been drunk?

I normally will have a drink 2 or 3 times a week... but normally it's not more than a couple and that doesnt do anything to me! I've only been drunk 3 times in my life, and they're spaced out with over a month in between. it's very rare that i drink to get wasted. Last night I did though... it was fun, it was my first time being drunk but not getting sick or a hang over! Good times!!!

I didnt drink till I was 19. And just beer... which led to chugging 40's. By the time I was 20, I was hitting the bar pretty frequently. I'd do shots of whiskey with chasers, but good old Bud Light was the drink of choice.

That's the back story to get to the moral of the story.
Even tho I drank a lot, only ONCE have I ever drank to the point of being sick and blacking out and that was on my 21st birthday, which was about 12 long islands, 2 shots of tequila, 2 glasses of beer and who knows what else.... that was not good!
After that I learned my limits. To drink in moderation, know where the TOO MUCH point is. Know the point right before you get sick, that's where you'll have the most fun without it being ruined by after effects.
Also know your bartender!
I know how Bud Light effects me, I know how many bottles I can drink / how long to wait before I'm sober enough to drive.
If you do mixed drinks, different bartenders put different amount of alcohol in the drinks, its EASY to get wasted before you know what hits you. Very dangerous.

If you're in a safe enviroment like your place or a friend's place, you're mixing your own drinks, go wild, down all that you can get your hands on.

The two step cures for the common hangover...
1) sober up before going to sleep. going to sleep wasted, you'll regret it.
2) drink lots of water before you go to bed and right when you wake up.

I can't believe that you drink that abomination known as Bud Light. First, Budweiser sucks in general. Second... light beer?!?! Dude... I thought you had some taste man!

Yes Bud Light. It's about the only "beer" that I can enjoy. And my best friend is a bodybuilder, so since I was underage and he was the one buying, we got the Bud Light so it wouldnt mess with his diet overly bad. I've just kinda stuck with it at bars.
For hard liquor outside the bar atmosphere, my friend still does whiskey & diet pepsi, but I got to the point like a year ago I just cant swallow whiskey anymore, after like 4 years of that was enough, I switched to vanilla coke & vodka (50%, which is even more bang than the whiskey's 42%)

For me it depends on the occasion and my mood.  For example on my 21st birthday my friends took me out and I woke up on the bathroom floor.  But, last week I went to my friend's party and didn't drink at all.  I take my school work so seriously that I RARELY go out during the semester for no reason.  Birthdays are an exception and usually I don't drink then because I end up baby-sitting for whomever is most wasted.

In my opinion Holly, drinking two to three times a week (no matter how many you have in one sitting) is a bit much.  In my job I see freshmen make very bad choices about partying time and time again.  Just be careful and know your limit, I'd hate to see it happen to you.

Another tip to not get totally schnonkered... don't mix your boozes.  If you're drinking vodka drinks, stay with vodka drinks.  You start throwing rum, whiskey, gin, etc. on top of it, and the only thing you're gonna be on top of is the Porcelain Throne making your offering and singing hallelujahs... or something which might sound like you're saying 'hallelujah' at least...

but like I said it's normally only 1 or 2 drinks which does absolutely nothing to me. I rarely get drunk, and it's only when I know I can afford it. Like I knew I had nothing to do saturday so I knew I could afford to get drunk friday night. I knew I'd have to do homework and clean my room today, so last night I just got buzzed. This weekend was crazy only because it was my first weekend partying in over a month... Over christmas breaks the parties suck, and i couldnt last weekend due to rushing.

A thread about booze? Now this is something I can get behind.

Bourbon, neat with a little water or on the rocks.  Depending on the quality of the bourbon.  I highly recomend Woodford Reserve, Makers Mark, Four Roses and Knob Creek as good sipping bourbons.

Also, a good vodka with a twist of lime is always quality.  Rain, Stolis, Kettle One, etc.

I'll also happily drink a good scotch, but only on the rocks.  I need to cut the peat flavor or else it don't like it.

Mix any of the above with a decent cigar or pipe tobacco.  *swoons*

People who mix liquor with anything other than water are either women or poor college kids who can't afford good liquor.  No other excuse suffices.

Light beers are not good.  In fact, pilsners are not good with FEW exceptions.  While I understand why people drink them, they are the same people who order Coffee and put cream and sugar in it.

If you like light bears, try a wheat beer.  Hoegarden is EXCELLENT.  It's got a real smooth lemony finish. mmmmmm.  As a more widely available INTRO to wheat beers, try Blue Moon.  It's brewed by Coors and it gives you the idea of what the CLASS of beer has to offer.

I almost never get drunk, but I drink 2-3 times a week.  Bars are the easy place to hang out.  However, if there is a special event it's not uncommon for me to end up unable to drive.  Which is usually planned in advance for.

Like, for example, I had 2 friends get married this year.  Bachelor parties and wedding receptions are good times.

So true... haha
I'm a college student and we mix vodka with soda, lemonade, juice, pretty much anything. I don't like mixed drinks though... I'm all about shots. Vodka is what I normally get. Usually it's Smirnoff at parties (like the strawberry stuff Friday night, yum) but often they stick us with cheap stuff which is NASTY!
LOTS of light beers as well... natural light is popular because it's cheap. I hate beer though so it doesn't matter to me. The only beer I can drink, and I can only have one is corona with lime.
I also drink wine, champagne, strawberry daiquiris, margaritas, Malibu, etc when it’s around.

I do smoke though, and more often than I'd like. But who knows.

Rum and Coke is acceptable only when you need the caffine, IMO.

ALso, daquiries are tasty.  But they make you look like a sissy unless you are at the beach or at the pool.

When I was in Vegas I sat and drank Margaritas by the pool for 3 hours every morning.  It was how we sobered up

Corona is actually not bad.  I drink Corona when I'm out at the clubs.  It's something that you can drink slowly and it's a good chaser.

But beware, I realize that for a college kid Smirnoff is GOOD, but in reality, Smirnoff is the bare bottom of drinkable vodkas.  Anything lower than that is good for cleaning your bathroom and that's about it.

Most colleges are either "Beast Light" or "Natty Light" campuses.  Dayton was a Beast Light campus but Notre Dame and Xavier were both Natty Light campuses.  They all suck, but the Beast sucks slightly less ;)

If you like shots, try Yager.  Lots of girls like Yager shots.

???

First, I think you are looking for ESB.  Which stands for Extra Special Bitter.  ESP means Extra Sensory Perception and has nothing to do with beer.

And second, since when does Guinness make anything called an ESB?

...  To the best of my knowledge Guinness does now and always has made ONLY one beer and that's their Stout..

Actually, I was referring to "Extra Stout Porter", a name which no longer appears on the label of Guinness Stout.

Oh and by the way, I wouldn't say that extrasensory perception has nothing to do with beer.... 8)

You're on crack.

I googled.  Guinness never had Extra Stout PORTER on its label.

Guinness is not a porter and has never been a porter.  It does have "Extra Stout" on MOST of it's past labels.

But why would they put porter?  It's not a porter.  It's a stout.

Unless you know something I don't.

Looks like you didn't google hard enough. This was the first link google.co.uk turned up for "extra stout porter"

Quote from: "the guiness collector's club"
The word Stout was added in the early 1820's as an adjective, qualifying the noun "porter". An "extra stout porter" was a stronger and more full bodied variety. "Stout" evolved as a noun in its own right, as did the family name of Guinness

(source) (http://www.guinntiques.com/guinness_story/default.asp)

Although, admittedly, it's going back a while (try the best part of two centuries), and you may still be right about it never appearing on the labels.

Zuriel was born in the 1820's.

THat's the only answer I can come up with.  I went to that same site and looked at all their labels and none of them had Extra Stout Porter on them.

So a STOUT is evolved from a PORTER?  They taste NOTHING alike these days.  Poters are sweeter and have more of a nut flavor vs a stout which is more like a bitter chocolate or coffee.

I don't like Porters at all.  I love stouts.

Zuriel, where did you hear that from?  That is terribly obscure.

I'll quote from http://www.beeradvocate.com/news/stories_read/305/:
Quote
There were two strengths of Porter at that time, either marked with a single or a double "X." [sic] ... In 1820, the XX was renamed Guinness Extra Stout Porter
Quote
Yes, Porter is the father of Stout, and without it there'd be no creamy Guinness, Murphy's or Beamish as we know them today.

I knew I didn't pull that name out of my ass, but thanx for the discussion; I think I learned a good bit of the history of one of my favourite beers. 8)

Yeah.  I mean... it's the equivalent of me calling non-apple PC's IBM compatibles or refering to cognac as wine.  I mean... yeah, it's true in some sense.  But it's a convention that's been dead for a LONG time.

No one has used the phrase IBM compatible in 10 years and Cognac is only an offshoot of wine if you go back several 100 years.

Cognac is fermented from the win skins left over after making white wine.

They used to be almost the same process of fermentation, but there have been specific differences for a long time.

At one point though, cognac was considered a type of wine.

Cool, i never knew  :x

If its hard liquor i tend to go for vodka or gin anyways.  Grey goose, belvedere, or bombay are the only things you will find me buying.   Unless its for a girl then i get them the smirnoff flavored crap.

I like many different wines, but particularly sweet ones.  I really like pure wines, without the complex "bouquets" of the more sophisticated types - Concord grape wine, cherry wine, blackberry wine, &c.  Coñac I only drink when I'm at my aunt's house in Memphis.

Coñac is defined as a type of brandy (aguardiente), produced in a specific region of France (much like champaña, borbón, and tequila are region-specific), and brandy, subsequently, as a distillate of wine or fruit juice.  Yes, these definitions are simplified, but it helps to put it into perspective for those who might be lost. <cough>Wine-cooler drinkers</cough> 8)

Let me reword that.  I put my appositives out of place.  I meant Concord, blackberry, and cherry as examples of "pure" wines, all of the same ingredient rather than the more sophisticated wines with complex bouquets like zinfandel, merlot, cabernet, &c.

Sounds to me like you enjoy sweeter wines more so than simple wines.

My neighbor made me a bottle of concord wine and a bottle of cherry wine this past summer.  Both were actually not bad at all.  Not my style, but I still enjoyed them.

ooooooooh white wine is evil! not touching that stuff again.

Sommelier's tip; stick to a lower alcohol white wine style i.e. Hunter Semillon

http://www.winediva.com.au/regions/hunter-valley.asp

Its rare to find a classic example of this style with an alcohol content > 12.5%

Chardonnay by contrast can often reach 14.5% A/v and most Australians use
it at parties assuming it will be the popular choice for the majority of guests;
I'm still surprised by the facination wine drinkers here have with this variety!

im colombian, and, so my parents have never been against letting their kids drink, no matter how old they are,, its just the culture. so i'll drink sometimes socially or if i get bored at home and feel like whipping up a piña colada or something. i think the more you tell people they cant do something, the more they want to... so i say the drinking laws in this country are stupid. :)
