.....(under the new album section)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so i think it's about time that i address a few issues that are screaming for attention.
a) unfortunately, there will be no second single on this album. there are a handful of people at my label that do not see how great the album would do if it was promoted. yes, there are shortsighted (nonmusical bastards) and it sucks, but that's the way it goes. welcome to the music biz.
2!) i worked my ass off promoting harmonium in the ways that i could control, but you can't sell records to someone in the middle of indiana without a little help. (i like indiana).
c)the people (you) that have supported this record and love it are my true and ultimate fanbase. don't worrry i will continue churning out the goods no matter how big or small the albums are.
4) i'm writing some killer songs for my 3rd album (most people will know it as my second!). and feel that i am about to FINALLY settle down with a group of people that "get" what kind of artist i am. (yes, there will be a lot of changes going on.) no i am not a pop princess (current label doesn't realzie this important tidbit). though i know that everyone reading this knows that, the rest of the world should and will figure it out at some point as well.
8) i had a blast on tour (which i never do), and i can't wait to get back on the road. look for an album in early next year (yes, it will probably get pushed back : )
big kiss

The post itself (http://www.vanessacarlton.com/bboard/album/viewtopic.asp?TopicID=1549343&topic=harmonium) I added a link to the post on the O-board for those who want to see it. -B

 im sad theres no secind single......but  im glad to hear there will be a third
-
i'm writing some killer songs for my 3rd album (most people will know it as my second!)
Call me dumb, but I wonder what she means by most people will know it as her second?
And wow an album early next year? Even if she said it'll probably get pushed back that's still pretty surprising to hear considering how long it took for Harmonium to come out.

She means that nobody but the true fans bought (and for that matter, even know about) Harmonium. It probably hasn't even cracked 150,000 sold yet. It is really sad the promotion sucked that hard.
... this is a very interesting post. Lots of stuff to read between the lines. We will see what happens. 8)
-
a, 2!, c, 4, 8.....
LMAO!!!
 oh, how I love you, Vanessa :D
I really wanted a 2nd single, but WOW a new album already?!
wow. awesome.
I really hope it doesnt get pushed back too far.
i want an early 2006 release!
I hope things work out for her, what with the new people, and yada yada.
 :) yay.
-

I hope so, too.
I hate to be the one to speculate, and maybe I was just reading way too much into the post and how she worded stuff, but it sounds like she might be hopping labels real soon. *shrug*

 oh, how I love you, Vanessa :D
haha I was laughing at that too.

but it sounds like she might be hopping labels real soon. *shrug*
Yeah, I can "read" that too. At the same time, I understand her position if she does it: no 2nd single, no promotion whatsoever for Harmonium (didn't even get released in France!!). Luckily there was a tour but that's pretty much about it.
And wow, an new album early next year? If it doesn't get pushed back, it'd be a great bday present for me!! :D
-
omg a new album so soon?! im so excited now !
awww but no 2nd single, that is so pathetic! damn thos a&m bastards
-
*claps at Vanessa*
YOU GO GIRL!!
but yeah, stupid bastards....
-
I posted on the o/b for the first time in about a year.
Im so shocked. Im glad she is going to keep going because it will keep us going and me going.
-
Whoot! Whoot! Go V! A 3rd album *gets excited* :D
I feel so bad though, you could tell she worked so hard on that Harmonium, she was so excited! It came out beautifully. But lack of promotion (curse you a&M  ) made sales go bad. But her true fans are still with her. In Vanessa we trust :-)
-
OMG OMG OMG!!! :!:
im soooooooo excited bout new album and songs, but if she switches labels before her a+m contract is up then she gets hardly anything.
so good to hear she'll keep goin no matter what.
AND WE ALL KNOW U AINT NO POP PRINCESS!
-
it makes me want to cry. harmonium is such an amazing album. i hate record companies! it makes me want to start my own and change the whole music biz around lol.
-
it makes me want to start my own and change the whole music biz around lol.
We could be co-op on this one! ;)
Shall I get some money from my Swiss bank account?
-
AND WE ALL KNOW U AINT NO POP PRINCESS!
Indeed! There's plenty of evidence out there; no pop princess would say...
I don’t really think being on the cover of Maxim will help me to sell records. Frankly, I don’t need to be in my underwear to command attention from men. I can do it just as well by playing my piano."
-
I'm so glad that Vanessa finally addressed these issues herself - it shows that she can take charge and still be totally open and honest with her fans.
I respect that a lot. It's disapppointing that she's not releasing a second single. I was a bit surprised by that, because I was sure that "Who's To Say" was close to making it's way out as the next one, but it's obviously just not in the cards this time. I feel so bad for Vanessa because of her poor promotion from A&M. It just goes to show you how narrow-minded people in the music industry are these days. Vanessa is a rarity - she actually sings without a backup chorus and writes her own music. She plays the piano on her own and doesn't need to objectify her body in order to sell records. I respect Vanessa so much, for those reasons in particular, and it just proves that a record label like A&M does not deserve to have an artist as talented as Vanessa on their label.
Even in spite of all of this, Vanessa is still pushing to put out a third album. Good for her! I can't wait until it's released and I'm sure it will be just as good as Harmonium. This is proof that Vanessa is truly dedicated to her music and her amazing fanbase.
And that's all I wanted to say about that :)
-

no, I think you nailed it right on the head B. We all knew it was coming. the irony is that she is probably being dropped because Harmonium was a "flop" (not saying flop = teh suxerz, but to record execs it was, let's be honest) yet it "flopped" because the company did ZERO promotion to begin with. However if one of those mighty businessmen had left their tenth floor corner office with a view and actually came to a show this tour, they would have realized Harmonium could have been even more successful than BnN. Right now I feel like writing a nastygram to Ron Fair, but what good would that do.
-
Right now I feel like writing a nastygram to Ron Fair, but what good would that do.
Yeah...he probably doesn't care...
And I'm not even sure he's the one to blame. Is he the CEO of A&M?
-

She probably is being dropped because Harmonium didn't do well, but it seems like she's already covered herself and found another label which will cater more to her music style, which is a very positive thing if that is true. And that is why it makes sense for her to make a new album so quickly, because the new label probably can't legally promote songs from the "old" album since I'm sure in some legal mumbo-jumbo way Interscope holds some rights to the songs or something :?.
Plus she wouldn't flame the label unless she really was leaving, so yah :).
-
hey, new label = new website... finally we may get a decent vc.com site! :-P
-

:D great point!
-
I wonder who owns the rights to ATM? Because while that song should technically keep her comfortable for the rest of her life, if she leaves A&M in a bitter fight- then things ain't gonna be easy. I think everyone knew this was coming- and i am just hoping her 'new people' aren't some tiny indie label. I think everyone needs to calm down a bit about the 3rd album- think how long Harmonium took. I am not getting my hopes up.
-
wow. she seems really upset
poor V
Amanda
-
I wonder who owns the rights to ATM?
Well, since she wrote it, she owns the credits for that, at least.
hey, new label = new website... finally we may get a decent vc.com site! :P
WERD!!
-
very few artists own their own music... i highly doubt V owns ATM and most likely only owns the copyright on the lyrics etc. When you're signed to a label they basically own *everything*... the weird thing is VC hasn't trademarked her name or any of the other things that mgmt usually handles... like the VC font. Even if she leaves the label or they drop her, they will still have to pay her whatever % of what they get for ATM but i don't know how honorable a label is about doing that :)
-
lol, if V actually owned the rights to ATM, I highly doubt it would have popped up in White Chicks
-
I wish I could find my copy of BNN (it got ripped to my iPod and I haven't touched the CD since). It would tell you who owns the copyright to ATM.
-
does anyone know what the new record label is?
-
hey, new label = new website... finally we may get a decent vc.com site! :-P
If she were to sign to any of the Sony owned labels, there'll be a new board even worse than Fullerene!
It'll be interesting to see where she actually does go.

well i remember seeing the be not nobody album and a few of her demo tapes on copyright.gov records, but i dont know exactly if that means she owns them completly. :?
anyway.
new website?!? ooo, i hope its better than the current one >_>
gasp! that means all of my 22257 posts will be gone :?
ah well, whatever.
we might not even get a message board at all. and if we do, it could suck. :x bleh.
well i'm glad this board isnt going anywhere  :)

I kinda like it when they're on indie labels--gives them more freedom.
Patty was dropped from A&M..and she owned her songs but not the recordings...
-

Yeah, I meant she owns the rights to her lyrics, sorry if I didn't make it clear enough.
I've just checked the BnN booklet, it says "all songs published by Rosasharn Publishing/Universal Music, (BMI)"
-
is it realy this bad???
no offence , but BnN was simply stronger
lets see how the 3rd one does
-
Her management should contract out the website, rather than have the label do it. Label run sites suck 95% of the time.
-
oh. my. god.
*dies*
*sees third album info*
*rises to life*
but ooooooh poor Vanessa :( :( :(
-
Nessa is a doll. What a class act.
Here's to the third album :drunk:
-
I hope things work out for her, what with the new people, and yada yada.
I hope so, too.

I think we should start a label called NESSAholic Records. It's a nice thought as unrealistic as it might be.
-
What a post jampacked with bad news and good news! I'm rather disappointed that there will be no second single (though I am still pushing "Who's to Say" on local radio stations as hard as I can), but I am hopeful to hear that she's serious about her music and she's not giving up because she knows who her fans are.
And by the way, owning the rights to the songs and the rights to the records are two different things. Unless she makes the mistake of selling her songs to the wrong person (and anyone but yourself is always the wrong person), she would still have the right to use her songs (i.e., to perform them and promote them and even re-record them), but the records made by A&M are still their property (just as the 'Rinse' recordings are the property of the label that made them, though they never released them).
-
Luckily there was a tour but that's pretty much about it.
Sorry to be a moaner, but where was our tour?? Does the emergence of this 3rd album mean she's not coming to the UK after all? I wonder if there is the money to fund her coming over here, if A&M won't fund production and promotion of a 2nd single why should they fund any sort of tour outside the US?
Of course I'm delighted to hear there will be a third album, and that she's not gonna give up just because those idiots at A&M aren't going to give her the promotion and support she deserves. I'd been thinking up until now that because Ron Fair personally produced BNN, that A&M would give Nessa pretty much anything she wanted, that she was special to them. Seems I was very wrong :(.
Wonder who these 'new people' are, new label? new production team? new band?
-

But us true fans will know it as her fourth album!

-
Ah yes, silly me! One, two, three, four.... That would make VC3 her fifth if you count those. 8)
-
I just read Vanessa's latest post and I am so mad that they won't let her release another single because they don't think it would do well. That's such bullshit! ERR! I know Vanessa knows that we would always support her. *hugs for Nessa*

Nessa has mentioned she'd like to have a british producer for her 3rd CD
this almost certainly means she will be headed to the UK to make it happen!
-
Aww, no new single? That's depressing.
-
This is really sad... I thought Harmonium was a great album, and with enough exposure it would do well...
I BLAME IT ON ALL THE TALENTLESS BASTARDS OUT THERE PRODUCING "MUSIC".
*pouts*
This is a good time to rant about how stupid music is today.
Well have all these stupid people TALKING in songs, with the same beat over and over. Honestly, 95% of the board could do that crap.
Take Gwen's new song. I know people like it, ok, it's catchy, I admit. But HONESTLY... How much talent does that take? Does she sing? No.
Then comes along a young lady with a great voice and awesome piano skills and writes most of her songs... And people don't CARE because they would rather listen to some of that shit on the radio!
I think we need to make a time machine... and warp Vanessa back to the days where real music counted.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the new album... Hopefully it doesn't get pushed back too far, I want it as a graduation present!!
<3 for the Nessaholics

Ugh, I HATE "Hollaback Girl." I have Gwen's album (which I hardly ever listen to) and I can't physically bring myself to listen to that "song." It's one of the most obnoxious pieces of "music" I've ever heard...right up there with "Who Let the Dogs Out."
EW.

bah, I like Gwen...I don't think there is room for this kind if comparison, I mean, I like her music, even if she;s going a little far these days, but yeah. I mean I dont blame her kind of music on Vanessa not doing well, I blame the bastards who promote people more than others!!
-
dude hollaback girl is so fucking awesome. it is the shittiest song ever, but it gets stuck in your head. so it has to be the most awesome piece of shit evar.

What? It's the single most embarassing thing I've ever heard. I couldn't possibly agree more with PianoGirl4444. In fact, the comparison is slightly insulting to "Who Let The Dogs Out", which is a triumphant masterpiece of music compared to Stefani's latest travesty.
Again, catchy does not equal good. The plague was catchy.

lol! That has to be the most hilarious thing I've heard all day! Thanks for that.

As perfect as that analogy is, the people who really need to hear it will never listen. :?

Well, I'm glad some people backed me up on that one. I was beginning to think everyone thought I was a bitch. lol

yea shes making it her second album so it will be "better" theres an online petition if yew agree with me and think its wrong sign it.

What again from my words?

Okay, okay, I think there's something of a misunderstanding here. Let me try to explain what Vanessa originally said and what she meant. Vanessa said that she was beginning work on her third album, but that most people would probably know it as her second. She said this because since 'Harmonium' has been so poorly promoted, a lot of people out there may not even be aware that Vanessa has released a second album! But obviously, her third album is going to be released with such a bang that everyone is going to know about it just like they did her first!
