SEE 14th POST ON PAGE 4 FOR UPDATE
May 31st I sent my resume in response to an ad on Mandy.com for open positions for a film called "Montclair" shooting in...Montclair, NJ.
last night I finally got a reply and I shall be helping out on set. :D
it's been almost a year since the last project i've worked on, so I'm friggen ecstatic.
I dont know much about the plot, other than the story is a character driven drama. i'll post more about it as a learn more.
it's up in the air right now as to where exactly I'll be helping on set, but i should know by next week.
this is a feature film, so depending on distribution, it may end up in theaters, or it may just hit some festivals...
shooting begins July 25th and wraps on August 15th
:dances:
-
congrats! so cool....thats really not alot of time to film a whole movie huh? must stay on location alot....(???)
-
Wow that's cool! Congrats :)

well it all depends on what the film needs. the shooting of a film doesn't necesarily need more than 3-4 weeks...a lot of that depends on what the script calls for. I'm not sure how many diff locations there will be in Montclair too, so I'm not sure how much moving around is needed.
Big budget action flicks that film in various countries probably take longer than a month just for the shooting.
the last feature drama i worked on completed shooting in 3-4 weeks as well. although it's been in post-production hell since 2003...lord knows if i'll ever even see that film.
Wow that's cool! Congrats :)
thanks....i've been smiling for the last 24 hours (almost as if I've gotten my car back just on time to get to a concert this weekend...right Ivy)
-
Sounds ab fab! What will you exaclty be doing on the set? Just curious... :)

Ahhh, that's so awesome, Brian! I want so bad to be in a movie. And this could end up in theatres? That's even cooler! I'll definitely see it if it comes to a local theatre.

i should be talking to the Unit Production Manager today, and maybe meeting with her Friday.
she left me a message and asked me if I could start earlier than the 25th and work as her assistant, which would be AWESOME, but I already told my boss that I'll only need 3 weeks. fuckin' sucks. i really hate my job. :x
-
Ahh, that sucks!
Good luck! You deserve a great job working on this movie. Make sure to post here as soon as you find out what you're doing!

will do
-
things just got a whole lot interesting...
this is an e-mail the the Unit Production Manager sent me, after I told her that I can't start earlier than the 25th.
Hey Brian-
I don't know what your situation at work is, but if I could offer you $200/wk to come onboard as my go-to-guy (with a credit as line producer) would you be able to come onboard by July 19? I would preferthe 11th but you are the strongest candidate and I would like to see if we can work something out.
I need someone that is smart, reponsible, knows their way around the area and is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I am playing one of the lead characters and there will be days that I will need someone to stand for my UPM job.
Just wanted to ask before I moved on- Let me know either way!
Jenni
decisions...decisions...
-
ooo tough decision.... tell us what you decide!
-
decisions...decisions...
I smell a reality show!
Just kidding... good luck with the decision!
-
spoke with the owner of the company here yesterday...seems like i'll be able to work something out where I can start the 19th. just gotta tell my sup. on monday that the OWNER said it was okay :D
-
Okay....I met the Unit Production Manager, Jenni, today and I got some more info on what my on set role will be.
Jenni is also acting in the film, so I will sort of be her right hand man, taking over some of her responsabilities of UPM on days where she's needed for acting.
I'll also be contacting the different locations a day or so before we're to shoot there so they know that we're coming. I may also be in charge of calling crew members who are not working ever day to make sure they know their schedule.
I believe I'll be credited as Line Producer, which is pretty freaking cool.
The basic description of a Line Producer is: A producer who is responsible for managing every person and issue during the making of a film.
so I'm not really so much of a "producer", but I should have similar responsabilities as one.
Oh and you know that $200/week pay I mentioned...I shall be getting that, but I also found out that this particular job has a deffered payment of $1000. Now I was shocked when I heard $1000, so I'm not sure if she said the payment was $1000 a week, or $1000 flat for the entire 4 weeks I'll be working. Either way I just feel like....I feel like :dances:
-
aww thats awesome! i hope it all works out in your favor
-
aww Im so happy for you!!!
-
aww Im so happy for you!!!
peep this shit....i wasn't really looking forward to telling my supervisor today, but i knew i had to, and I knew he'd probably say yes about the four extra days mainly b/c the owner said it was fine...
however...i found out that it doesn't really matter because my supervisor will no longer be my supervisor...he's leaving the company.
he supposedly found a better job opportunity and took it (similar to what I did here...couldn't pass up the great offer ya know)
-
same thing with my supervisor...he just got offered a job with another company, which is good cuz he sucks!....but he wont be gone til next month...but im still happy hes leaving...

mines gone in 2 weeks, but really a week for me, since I start the film next tuesday :)
-
Wow, that's awesome!
Is this a big budget film? Do you know what the budget is?
-
Wow, that's awesome!

not big at all.
from what I understand, the film has a $64,000 budget. not much at all, but that doesn't count investors and whatnot, which could total around $200,000. they're trying to keep it under $250,000 though because of SAG rules and paying actors more $$$ when they really can't afford it.
-
still totally cool that you get such a big role in it though....
-
there is a huge RUMOR that Jessica Biel is interested in a part, but that's just a RUMOR. It's a smaller role in the film, only like 2 or 3 scenes. would be good for the film if she did end up joining the cast...but like I said, this is just a rumor
I went location scouting yesterday with the Unit Production Manager, Production Designer and designers assistant. Saw some great locations in and around the Montclair/Totowa/Little Falls area of Jersey.
Met with the director also, after his 5 hour flight delay from Atlanta. Very cool guy. Can't wait to work with these people.
-
That's awesome!!! You're going to have so much fun!!!! Keep us informed!!
-
Wow, all of that sounds really cool man!
Keep us updated, you'll be our "inside guy"! :D

so she was in TCM? i was trying to remember if that was her or not...the movie was ok...i think it could have been better but whatever...

Shooting starts July 25th.
For the last week and a half, I've been pretty busy contacting folks involved, trying to get more peeps to help out on set, driving from location to location in order to map them out, trying to wrangle together last minute necessities, have a bunch of meetings. (seems like a lot less when writing it out, but this shit takes forver)
Although tiring, I absolutely love my job on this film. Can't wait for tomorrow. There's nothing better than doin' what you wanna do. :)
The last week was pretty long, but the next 3 weeks will seem like 4 months. We'll be putting in about 12-14 hours a day (sometimes a night)
No word on Biel, but if I had to guess, I'd say she probably will NOT be in this movie. We'll see.
I'll let ya'll know how the first week of shooting went next weekend.
Peace.
-
The first week of shooting is done and it feels like a month has gone by. It's so weird. Today is our first day off from shooting.
So far things have been going great on the film. We're not too far behind schedule, maybe like 1 or 2 scenes. We seem to run later than expected, which can get people a tad annoyed. It doesn't bother me all that much, just because I'm having fun, but it's extremely tiring.
Last Wednesday was probably the worst day of the week. I was handed over the responsability of getting working papers to the NJ Labor department for these two minors that are in the film. That itself turned out to be a pain because the woman at the Labor department kept changing the way this stuff was supposed to be handled. It could have been completed a week ago, but no, we had to rush it because the kids were shooting that day and we couldn't change the date due to permit that we had alrady paid for.
So, I tell the kids to be in Montclair, NJ an hour before shooting is to start so I can get them down to the High School in the town to get all this paperwork filled out.
I was on my way to mee the kids, when my cell phone rang. I was on the highway, so I pulled over and BAM! Fucking pot holes. Blew out my tire. Luckily it was near an exit, so I was able to pull off and get to a gas station. Turned out someone I know works there, so he popped the spare on and off I went. I wasn't too late, which was a good thing.
So I get the kids to the school, have the papers signed, and get back to the producers house to fax 'em to this chick at the Labor department, while the kids head over to set. So I called the woman to make sure the fax got through, and they did....but there was yet another problem. The kids had to actually sign the sheet as well. So off I went, back to set to get these kids to sign, then back to the house to fax 'em. Finally...paperwork is done, the kids were able to work.
So the morning was stressful and annoying on many level. I also got yelled at by the director. Part of it was my fault I guess, but part was Set Designs fault as well. I saw him talking with the head of Set Design, but not sure how bad it went.
Every other day has been pretty good I guess.
Today I'm off to get my tire fixed (hopefully).
Making phone calls to actors for the week as well, trying to find Production Assistants. We only had two PA's and one left the second day of shooting to work on something at VH1. That pissed me off, she didn't even have the guts to call me...she sent me a text message. Dirty whore.
Anyways...I'm having fun. Sadly I have seen so much of the actual film making. I'm usually on the phone or I just can't because most of the interior sets are kind of small. Hopefully I'll get to see more of it this week though.
The people I'm working with are amazing. There's only one guy I can't stand. He was supposedly hired as a PA, then denied it, so we handed him over to lighting crew, but he just bitches so much, thinks he knows everything.
I hope I get to work with these peeps again. They've been super nice, and they seem to like what I'm doing, so that's a plus. :D

In Mountainside? Or do they still have a Newark office?

it wasn't Newark...the fax number was 908 area code, so I thought it was down near Trenton or something like that.

Ohhh, something about it made it seem like you went to the office, so this is far less interesting to me now (no offence  )...I'd bet Mountainside, they have a 908 and I KNOW there is a DOL office there, Trenton is 609 I believe.

awww is this what you were telling me about over the phone today? that really really sucks. :( but at least it has gotten better.

yeah....it has since gotten a whole lot better.
Even this past Saturday, when we were dealing with children, I thought I was going to go insane, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. The kids worked great, they all left set unscathed.
We had Sunday off, and we're pulling an all nighter tonight from 5PM to 5AM tomorrow morning, then we've got the rest of Tuesday off.
Wednesday we start are final 6 days of primary shooting, then next Tuesday (the 16th) will be a pick up day for some scenes we were unable to shoot due to the lack of a recording studio location.
The 16th will also most likely be our wrap party as well. I'm trying to work it out so that I can be at Vanessa's show that night, then make it to the party afterwords. We'll see what happens.
I'm off to run some morning errands before I get to set later tonight.
I'll give ya the final update next week when we wrap. :D

oh good :) ttys

WOW! Working on this film has been one of the greatest experiences ever for me. The people were just amazing, the entire crew and cast were just some of the nicest guys and gals I've worked with. I haven't done a whole lot with my film career, not nearly as much as I wish I could be doing, but this is by for the best set I've worked on yet.
Yesterday was the final day of primary shooting and it was a long one. I was up at 5:30AM to pick up breakfast by 6:15, only to get to the place and it was closed. The manager told me the night before they opened of 5:30, so I placed a pretty large breakfast order. However, there was this nasty storm that same night (which many of the crew, including my self, got drenched from head to toe...I think my sneakers are still quite damp), and his power went out, so he was running pretty late. We ended up getting breakfast about an hour later than we should have, but shit happens.
From there we shot off two really quick pick up scenes, then shot the final scene of the film (for those interested, films are really never shot in the order they're written). So off we went to the next location, a golf course. It turned out to be a nice day weather wise, cloudy, not too hot and it didn't rain. The golf course took longer than expected and we got back to the other location about an hour an half later than we should have.
From there, we sat around awhile waiting to get some clothing for the police uniforms. Why that was done last minute, I don't know. I think we started shooting the final set up around 10:30PM and we finished around 1:15AM. By the time we had finished cleaning the location, I had been awake for 22 hours. Not sure how I lasted that long...even the coffee wasn't working. However tired I was, I just wanted to be there. Helping make this film. I didn't get the hands-on experience, but I learned a whole new apsect in Line Producing and Second Assistant Directing.
Over the past 22 days, myself, Jenni (the Unit Production Manager and character of Suzanne) and Justin (Producer and lead character Jay) did the jobs that would normally take roughly 10 people to do. The entire crew busted their asses to get this done, and we did it. Shit I can't wait to see this film. I know it's going to be great and hopefully it'll take the director further into this business and open the door much wider for me as well.
I'm hoping Jenni will keep in contact with me. She's working on a short film that will be shot in January. The story sounds great and I hope I'll be able to help out on that.
I'm also taking into consideration of quitting my real job (which I go back to tomorrow after being gone for 4 weeks.....damn that's gonna be weird). I don't know when it'll happen, maybe sooner rather than later. Hopefully I'll also come up with some great ideas of my own, and start shooting my own films.
Now that it's over, it's hard to believe. After the first week of shooting it had felt like we'd been there for 1 month. Now I just can't believe that it's over. It truely had been a wonderful 4 weeks...4 weeks of my life that I will NEVER forget.
:D

Wow, that's so awesome. I'm really happy that you got the chance to work on this! You deserve it.

update:
i spoke with producer/actor Justin Barrett today. He's heading out to California this weekend to meet up with the editor. They're going to cut together one, maybe two, trailers. As soon as he gets back to Jersey with a trailer, he said I'll get a copy. :)
-
Was at Jenni Tooley's house tonight discussing the short film we'll be shooting in a few months, when the trailer arrived...
It was really great to see something from this film finally. Unfortunately there was only one disc, so I dont have a copy of it just yet, but I'm sure i'll get one soon...
the trailer was a tad long but the editor Benji did a really good job on it.
when i get my copy I'll find a way for everyone to take a peek
-
Can't wait!

hopefully...its still being edited and will be sent out to festivals at the end of the year...hopefully a company will pick it up for distribution :D

This friday I'll get to see a first assembly of the film. From what I hear its still got some editing to be done, music to be added, but the bulk of the film is put together. Ahh, I can't wait... :D
-
Excellent! I'm assuming they edited on Avid. Will you be seeing it on tape, film, ...?

not sure if Avid was used...i believe it was transferred to film, but i'll find out friday for sure

We watched it on DVD last night...It's looking really good so far. It's still got some edits to go through, but Mike Ramsdell, director, expects to have it completed by the Sundance deadline, which is either Sept. or Nov. I'm so happy with how its turing out. The story is great, the cast is amazing...so good to see a near complete version of the film. :D
