From one of my blogs....

It's time for my annual fourth of July rant. Now, I like July 4th as much as any normal teenage male. There is nothing quite as patriotic as blowing up a piece of some country like China, Mexico, or Korea to celebrate how badass your country is. I derive further enjoyment from this practice because it's a big screw you to lame-ass nannycrats, who, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that me blowing up crap is illegal because they're afraid that dumbasses will hurt themselves. NEWSFLASH: Dumbasses have always hurt themselves, with or without fireworks. It's called NATURAL SELECTION! But I digress.

Why do we celebrate July 4th as Independence Day? I recall in elementary school, I was told that the Declaration of Independence was signed on that date in 1776. All you people who took AP US History should recall, however, that the document wasn't signed by the Continental Congress until August 2, 1776. And wait... not everyone signed it by then. In a later history class, I was told that July 4th was when the document was sent off to good 'ole King George. That's absurd because not everyone signed it then. In yet another class, I was told that July 4, 1776 was the date of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Umm... no... that was April 17, 1775. In yet another grade, I was told that July 4th was the date when the Continental Congress adopted the Lee Resolution, which stated that the colonies were independent. Well... that's the closest I got in school. That date was actually July 2nd.

Ok, so what actually happened on July 4th? It sounds pretty mundane. That's when the Continental Congress said they were happy with the version of the Declaration of Independence they had and they sent it off to the printer. It was actually finished the day before. How lame. In my opinion, April 17, August 2nd, and July 2nd are all better choices for Independence Day. Of course, I'd be arguing with the Continental Congress, who made July 4th Independence Day. Pfft. A bunch of old white dead guys. What do they know about the independence of the USA? :-P

BOVERED about independence day! At least here we just say our days off are blatant attempts to have a long weekend, rather than pretending they actually mean something!

I had a great Fourth!  I got to ride the Revolution and Zippin Pippin coasters at Libertyland (I love coasters, especially wooden ones!) and got to see most of my family for a grillout (Beer brats are the bomb!) and got to see the tail-end of a small city's fireworks show from a traffic jam in the park. 8)

You need to understand that the 4th of July is a day of national mourning here.

Just give us back our land and we'll forget the whole thing ever happened.

Ok,

Ghis, sorry to land this on you but your response wasn't witty. No haha. And yes, Rosie is smart. VERY smart, in case you hadn't noticed. That's actually part of the reason your witty comeback wasn't funny.

Brian, I doubt any of Rosie's posts on this thread count as "bashing the US". She was talking to Ghis, not burning American flags

I agree that i do have negative sentiments towards the US, not at all to the people who live there but to what America stands for and the values it upholds. If its getting old, it is only because America's tiresome and aggressive foreign policy isgetting old, because its stance on global warming is getting old and its belief that any decision should be taken only because it is 'right for America' is getting old. People in America do not have to live with the consequences of this- because YOU are the ones protected- but the rest of the world does.

Ill admit youre intelligent Rosie and also am understanding of your views as im not an extreme patriot myself.  However the blatant remarks on this message board are falling on deaf ears, and are only upsetting people.  If youre remarks led to resolve they may be considered reasonable, but i do believe this thread isnt  "Is the 4th of July a valid holiday debate"

Please, as much as you hate our government, none of us nessaholics from america are "the government". Let it be

Awesome...my excitement stems from the fact that there were no classes today, so instead of teaching I got to go to school and get some real honest to goodness research done.

Woo!

Now, off to celebrate our Independence from the tyranny of King George III with swimming and a BBQ.

Due to everyone's work schedules, we had to celebrate a day early.  I went over to my Granny's house, where my aunt and cousin from Memphis had come up and my other aunt and cousin were also, and Granny, an uncle, three aunts, three cousins, a sister or two, and I had grilled sausages and stuff and I repaired a flat tire and chased my little cousin around the yard for throwing firecrackers at us.

Yep, thats Marla Sokoloff. she was "Gina" Stephanie's evil nemesis and then they somehow became best friends, she also was on The Practice as Lucy, and she's done a few small films here and there (and was on Desperate Housewives as "Claire" the tempting babysitter to Lynette's husband.) I met her at her concert. She makes the most amazing guitar straps "Kiss My Axe" and she performs, she has a cd but you can only buy it on her website Marla Sokoloff (http://www.marlasmusic.com)

sorry I love Marla's music, she dated James Franco and when he left her for his ego and career she wrote most of the tracks about him and her feelings. :) Glad you noticed.

Manda, that's cool. I didn't know she was a singer. And James Franco is the guy from Spiderman right? I know he's been in a lot of other movies too, and played James Dean on the miniseries!!

And Jessica, I made a post about that topic too, but Pete reminded me that thread is 2 years old. This whole thread is old =P So I stopped commenting. But I think they were just upset because she was saying America should realize the 4th is a meaningless holiday... or she suggested that. But I don't think it's meaningless despite people's disdain for our current administration! I still am proud to be an American.

lol this thread is two years old? i had no idea. i can't tell since these boards go through spurts of people posting and then come back from the dead. haha.

my fourth of july was fun. the 3rd is me and my boyfriend's anniversary, but since he lives in santa barbara (an hour and a half north ) i dont get to see him all the time. so we celebrated on the 4th instead, and at night went up to the top of the santa barbara mountains that overlooked the ocean to see the fireworks they were doing over the pier. it was fun until we got attacked by insect bites.
