Title: Promosquad-This Time
Post by: czarina on May 17, 2006, 05:49:14 pm
I didnt see this discussed anywhere else-please direct me to it if it has been. A fellow fan just told me they are hearing at least one Nessa song on Promosquad now, including This Time. Does anyone have it recorded or know if this means they are testing for a first single?!
(Sorry, Im excited, Vanessa is a musical goddess to me)

i have no idea, but i just signed up for this site, and i'm listening to the jukebox. i haven't heard it.. there's no search function on this site, which is stupid. leaves it completely up to chance on which songs you're going to hear.

anybody got a suggestion besides Polderbits (my trial ran out) for recording, if i just happen to hear it?

i love nessa and i love the song, but i HATE the lyrical changes. i hate "do i go too far, not far enough" hate hate hate. the original lyrics of "do i push too hard, not hard enough" were perfect. the living room version is PERFECT. i dont like change lol.

Exactly! I feel a bit lost as to what's actually going on- is this the first single off the album then and they're testing it out on this website? I've got so used to not expecting anything to happen ever again that it's bizarre to actually see something going on!

I must admit, i was expecting less of a drum/violin vibe to this song and more a piano tune. I play this song on the piano all the time and i think the cords are exceptional but with this recording its difficult to hear the true piano.

I think this version has some shitty EQ applied to it, I don't believe it will be like the version on the CD.

yeah I agree about it being a bit overdone, but I think if this was just a piano ballad it would be too linda perry-ish. This way sounds more like a Vanessa song.

no way. the way it's overdone is not vanessa. on harmonium, the production, and whatever was added to the songs, enhanced them. this just detracts. it's overdone, and sorry, but i'm going to have to say it's perry. the other 2 tracks i've heard have the same..affliction.

This is NOT the version that will be on the album.

I remember when Ashlee Simpson had tracks from "I Am Me" on PromoSquad, and they were completely re-recorded for the album versions. "Boyfriend" had swearing in it and sounded really different.

So I'm assuming artist use PromoSquad just to test their sudio demos.

I agree that Vanessa's vocals are not spot on, and since we know she's a (self-confessed) perfectionist, she's sure to re-record the song.

Maybe it's like that to try and make it more "commercial", like other pop songs, to try to make Vanessa "successful" again. (Personally, I define her as successful, as she is doing what she loves and is exceptional at it, but I mean "successful" as in selling lots of CD's).

I'm hoping that the beginning "It's 4 AM and I'm wide awake.... And as the light starts creepin in..." just got cut off. Without that first part it would be too short. I'm not sure how I feel about this version yet, I've been so attached to the Living Room live version.

oh it'll definitely be there. you can tell that the intro was copy and pasted onto the second verse. i got real confused when i first heard it, because there's definitely not supposed to be drums like that in the first verse, but that's all it was.. they cut off the first verse so it goes intro, 2nd verse, chorus, outro.

oh i'm sure that's why they did it. and that's probably the reason why perry's producing stuff on this album. it's just sad, that good music can't be considered sucessful by the music industry. god i hate the music industry. why am i trying to get into it? lol.

bland.... i'm so dissappointed. Seriously, i think linda perry's style is just bland pop...Don't get me wrong, because linda perry has produced some great songs, but she just doesn't do much for me. Personally, no one wants to hear bland pop music that sounds like childrens' songs, because the rhythms, harmony and melody are not at all exciting nor sophisticated.. "This time" is just boring... I'm very dissapointed. Nessa is basically spitting out reduced versions of "who's to say"'s.

There's no edge to vanessa's music anymore and if this is the type of stuff vanessa is going to put out for her next record, it's just going to slip underneath all the great pop records out there and no one will hear about it. Even though A Thousand Miles wasn't very sophisticated (not a lot of songs are these days), it definitely had some groundbreaking elements: the killer piano riff, killer chord progression hook, killer syncopated string instrumentals, and a very ingeniously rhythmic driven melody that matched the lyrics very well....(you might be surprised that i say "rhythmic driven" but just take a listen again.. and you'll discover that very special element in the song)

Going the route of simplifying your music for the masses is not the way to go... I mean it's true that music can be "too sophisticated" for a pop audience to understand or relate to... but you're not going to go anywhere if you don't make yourself stand out... conformity will never do you any good... the best it can do is get you a one hit wonder.

calm down, people!

this 'version' is merely a simple demo sampler.
its about 1/4th of the real song and part of it is looped, if you didnt notice, the point was just to let people know how Vanessa is currently sounding, and what her new CD might sound like.

this is by no means anything close to the real CD version of This Time.

i'm not worried about the album sounding like shit. i have confidence in vanessa, as well as stephan's production. and i don't think i'm overreacting. the only thing i'm worried about, is linda perry's production.. i don't know. i just hope that the linda perry tracks that wind up on the album are good enough that i don't skip over them everytime i listen to the album..

We don't really know how the finalised version will sound until the album is released. But Vanessa has been doing this for awhile now. She's a smart musician. I really can't imagine her letting other people push her around and letting her music suffer as a result. That wouldn't be the Nessa we know. She had to stick to her guns to get signed in the first place, so she could be herself instead of being molded into a more formulaic pop star. I'm sure she won't change too much now. Obviously, she's growing up and will change (or "evolve") somewhat because of that , but I don't think she will "dumb down" her music or lose her edge- because her edge is what makes her special. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

it's not the only song she's written with linda. we just don't know which songs are going to make the album yet. it's possible that none of the linda songs will make the album, though unlikely, at least with This Time. ANY of the songs we've heard could be cut from the album..

Linda produced (obviously) This Time, and two that you guys haven't heard: Spring Street and Wave Goodbye. Stephan is producing The One, Put Your Hands on Me, and Best Behaviour (those are the only 3 they worked on when we were in the studio with them). All is Well is the only one we don't know the producer for. There's talk of a third person producing, but I don't know if that's who did it. It didn't ring a bell for our friend, which means that it's possible that Stephan didn't produce it, but it was one of the songs that me and nat heard mixed at our friend's house. so, so far we've got 3 songs from each of them, and one we're not sure about.. there's half an album, but who knows if they'll actually be on the album. i really hope that This Time is the only Perry track, because Spring Street and Wave Goodbye are definitely not good enough for a nessa album, imo.

Sam, do you reckon All is Well could be single material? since you've heard it with the production and everything, just wondering what you thought.  Coz it could be one of those album tracks that's amazing but not radio-friendly enough. Or rather, would you want it to be a single?
hmm.

i dunno.. sigh. i don't remember many details. i just remember loving the song and how it was produced. that's really all i can tell you.. other than that, i'm just as informed as you, single-wise.

i'm not sure.. but i'd say that out of the songs we've heard, PYHOM and Best Behaviour are the best choices for singles. but that's just my opinion.. i don't know.

i personally don't think all is well will be the single, but i could certainly be wrong. i don't think i'd want it to be one though. it's not.. i don't know. i can't explain it. it's my favorite new song, but i don't think it should be a single.

Yeah. But also, it gives the listener something to think about. It's an original spin on the break-up theme. I find it very interesting, especially the bridge. Those lyrics are simple, but very effective. The song really makes me feel what she's going through.

I do hope that the title doesn't change to "Only You"... that title makes it sound like a more generic pop song, whereas "Best Behavior" is intriguing.

but to quell your fears, hopefully, there was no ambiguity between Only You and Best Behaviour in the studio. it was definitely Best Behaviour.

thanks guys for all the info! esp for a newbie like me who doenst know as much...how do you guys get so much info?

anyway i think the promosquad version if this time isnt quite what i expected.. it has less piano that i thought it would have, and more drums and EQ...i guess its perry...i thought it bore similarities to christina aguilera's beautiful [that perry wrote too] but my sister said she preferred this version, so i guess we're even.

A lot of sites are blocked for me too at work (like Myspace, WTF!?). But I never loaded a virus though (given that we have cr*ppy McAfee here, I'm actually surprised by that!)

It isn't finished I don't think (can't remember what OrdinaryGirl said). I think it's just a demo or something......

yes but that's probably because yyou're smart and you don't go to crack.com and try to download a dodgy software that rips video from streaming video website sites ... :-) like http://music.ninemsn.com.au/
where they offer a variety of clips ..

so how about that VC TT mp3 ;-)

But I thought the version OrdinaryDay girl heard was different to the one that we heard?

God, I hope Vanessa re-does her vocals on "This Time" 'cos they're a mess.

guys, i don't know the status of the songs, in terms of what's going to go on the album. we heard mixed versions, but who knows what will be on the album, because we listened to mixed versions of Best Behaviour, PYHOM, and The One, but 2 days before, they were still recording those 3 songs. i don't know if what we heard was demos or what.

know what i'm sayin?

Ahh, yeah I get what you mean.

I guess we'll all have to see what version they use on the album then.
