Title: University Life
Post by: Harmonius on September 17, 2006, 11:46:25 am
Almost every member here is a student. I'm looking for good plain advice that would do me well. I'm enrolling tomorrow at law school and I need to know my way around and how things work. Of course, I shall find out for myself once I do enroll but I am impatient and need the information  :). If you're a student, please tell me what your major is and how you found life.

Thanks

Are you away from home or still living at home?

If you are away from home, the best advice I can give you is DON'T GO HOME ON THE WEEKENDS.

Stay at school.  Get to know people at school.  It might take a year or two to find close friends, but tough it out.  It's worth it.

It's ok to go home over the weekend occasionally, especially to do stuff like do laundry and get a break from DC food. Just don't do it that often.

The college I went to for 3¼ years was what was known by many as a "suitcase campus", so basically, if you stayed on the weekends, you wouldn't make too many friends because no-one else was there, except for a few foreign students, athletes, and assorted weirdos.  Thursday night was that town's Friday night because Friday night and Saturday night didn't happen.

But if your campus isn't like that, then by all means, hang out as much as you can! :D

yeah, it's like that here, too...basically Thursday is the Friday night.  I stay Friday nights and my hall parties...but for the most part, on Saturdays, it's dead.

School is AWESOME.  I've only been here like a month so I can't speak that much on the subject but I am doing A LOT.

I am building a racecar.

I am taking an aikido class.

I live in an engineering only residence hall.

My roommate is teaching me Chinese.

There are a million things to do here.

I love it. :D

college IS a blast.  There are so many open doors and (at least at my school) TONS of people to meet. I have to say, this is the time you can choose your friends.  Be careful or you might just repeat high school.

I go to uni in 2 weeks! W00t! I've already written an article for the student paper and joined the International Affairs Society. All i can say is, take a mattress topper- the mattresses there are no only rank, but horribly uncomfortable too. hehe.

That's the only way to go if you're an engineering major. It's fun getting together and making fun of all the artsies. ;)

The mattresses at my school are actually pretty good. It all depends. A mattress cover is a must, but not necessarily a topper.

wow. I've never seen anything like that before.
looks confortable, thats for sure :)

anywho.

yeah I started college not that long ago.
and I'm loving it  :D

ok so it started out kinda weird, but after I got a room change (because my old roommate was selling weed in our room and I was REALLY uncomfortable with that) things got extremely better.

my roommate is awesome, and we both hang out with basically the same people which is cool.
I love that I found friends who are straight edge, like me.
and I'm on the swim team, which just started, and is so far loads of fun.
Everyone here is so nice. I love it.(http://www.kings.edu)
I play Halo 2 with some of the people on my floor sometimes, and that's awesome. everything is just great :)

If you think CU Boulder is bad, come up here to Northern California and check out Humboldt State. The county the university is based in is famous for their weed.

yes, i know where it is.  My good friend here used to be an area coordinator for residence life there.  I also looked at it as an option for my undergrad school :-)

There is nothing wrong with going home on the weekends. I actually decided to stop living on campus at my school after 2 years. It was like this little cloistered and fake world. I felt that if I remained there all four years I definitely would not be prepared for a life of work and reality afterward. I was sick of always hearing about how drunk people got the night before, weeknights included, and everyone at my school is extremely, EXTREMELY liberal (or just a flat out barefooted hippie)- which, as a moderate, was frustrating to say the least. I'm in 1st semester of my senior year now and I don't regret living at home and commuting 2-3 days a week; it saves money and I can get away from "college" whenever I want to. But that is just me, maybe others need the environment to become more capable as adults.

yea, I know what you mean! I've been hoping that the massive amounts of partying would die down a bit. I mean, I like having fun... but I'm also at school. I wish like-minded didn't mean everybody getting plastered like it's the only thing to do besides study... kinda bites because now I have to make new friends so I can actually NOT party.  But where shall I find these new people?

Well honestly, I was looking foward to having lots of guy friends who are Yankee fans....the problem is that no engineers like baseball.

It's really sad.

But yeah, it's awesome when it's 3:30 AM and you're doing physics homework to know someone is there to help you.

NO! Don't go to Colorado State. Seriously. Boulder is where it's at. Ranked 11th best public university in the world.
http://www.colorado.edu/news/releases/2006/264.html
It's SO beautiful up here. There are so many smart people and so much political activism. Not to mention the killer music scene.  It's hard not to fall in love with this place. Have you visited? Come now. It's gorgeous. Wow I have way too much school pride for having been a student for only a month. Oh and if you check the U.S. News and world report for the best colleges in different majors, CU is on the top 30 or something for every major... except engineering. I was so lucky to get in-state tuition though. Honestly, CU has a bad rep. It's got a big party scene, but there are also many many dedicated students.  We have like 12 nobel laureates from CU.. and one of the best medical schools. I wish all that news didn't go down the past couple of years, because this university is fantastic.

Boulder is absolutly an awesome town.  But it's a little new age and trust fund baby for my tastes.

But yeah... you can't say a bad thing about the city.

Except maybe the weather is messed up... and everything is brown.  But that's just Colorado in general, and once you're there long enough you get used to it.

Ooooh... I've always wanted to go there for Halloween, but the past 2 years have been super busy that weekend! I partied there one weekend in summer once, and it was insane! I can only imagine what it'd be like during the school year, especially Halloween!

Oh, and to Harmonius... I would just recommend trying out a lot of different things! College is all about growing up and figuring out who you are! I know I've definitely learned a lot more than academic lessons in the 2 years I've been at my college! haha.
