What is wrong with America? We are obsessed with celebrities and the entertainment industry, and when Oprah "collapses" while trying out a new diet (which with the tabloids and all, I doubt actually ever happened) the news medium has a fucking FIELD DAY, but as for, oh, ten or so school shootings in less than a month, we don't hear anybody asking why that's happening. Any comments?
This post was mostly to see how many people will actually respond, because this forum needs to be brought back from the dead. If that happens, it'll be the second time...pathetic, really.

Umm...I've been hearing people ask why there's been so many school shootings & this is the first I've heard about Oprah collapsing. :lol:

yea I saw that tabloid.... wierd. I laughed a little (shame on me) cuz in the picture she was holding a cold water bottle to her forehead and I looked a little closer and saw that it was Perrier.

you guys are still having school shootings over there? forgive my naive australianess or should i say twenty year oldness. But how in the world is it that kids that age are able to obtain guns so easily?
I still say america needs gun control. But i'm sure this will follow with a barage of we have a right to have a gun after this post.

Why would there be a barage of we have a right to keep guns.
It's because of our constitution. You have to understand the United States of America is one of the oldest modern democracies. The Constitution is a document that distributes power, among other things. One reason we have the right to bear arms is to protect ourselves from an out of control government. As strange and backward as that might seem to some, there is a long heritage of the 'right to bear arms' in the states.
It is generally felt that if we give up our right to bear arms then perhaps freedom of speech and other rights will be taken away also. It's not totally unjustified either.

*Ok, now for my own soap box* ---this will be so debatable---
For instance, look at Iraq, if no one had guns then the United States government would have clamped down a long time ago, but because there are so many guns and weapons in Iraq it still hasn't ended the fighting. The Constitution has the right to bear arms for just a situation where the government tries to control the people but can't because there are so many guns in people's houses. Because it would be our right, they couldn't under the constitution legally take the weapons from us.

Basically, if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Is that really what you'd want?

i thought that most of the gun deaths and shootings in america though were caused by people who weren't outlaws.
And in australia you can have a gun but there are a LOT of rules with having one, and it seems that only really outlaws have them here but we don't have NEARLY the same amount of shootings as america, and that's the percentage of the population too.
I'm just saying it would be harder to shoot up a school if kids didn't have such an easy access to guns, coz right now they seem to know where there parents keep them and if there not in a good state of mind there like 'hey, i know what i'll do i'm just going to borrow this deadly weapon that my parents have lying around coz i'm pissed off enough to shoot someone.'
I don't think it's safe.

I don't have those figures in front of me right now. All I can say for sure is that it's really easy to get shot, though not that it's likely to happen. Believe it or not, the vast majority of people never get shot in their entire lives. I don't have those figures in front of me either, but I do know that their overwhelming enough to make that generalisation. But it is really easy to get shot. I mean, think about it. Where are you right now, and what are you doing? Do you know where everyone else is and whether or not they have guns? I didn't think so.
But there's this: Does having a gun protect you from other people who do have guns? Probably not. Even if you get shot and shoot back, you still got shot. There have been duels in which both contestants effectively lost. I don't have those figures in front of me right now, but guns are weapons which, by themselves, are not effective defense against anything else with a gun. But is that enough of an argument to prove that people do not need guns? I don't have those figures in front of me right now.
