Mott St. between Houston St. and Prince St., New York, N.Y.Nolita, sometimes written as NoLIta (North of Little Italy), is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Nolita is bounded on the north by Houston Street, on the east by the Bowery, on the south roughly by Broome Street, and on the west roughly by Lafayette Street. It lies east of SoHo, south of NoHo, west of the Lower East Side, and north of Little Italy and Chinatown.
The neighborhood was long regarded as part of Little Italy. The area, however, lost its recognizable Italian character in recent decades because of the migration of Italian-Americans out of Manhattan to other boroughs.
In the second half of the 1990s, the neighborhood saw an influx of young urban professionals and an explosion of expensive retail boutiques and trendy restaurants and bars. Having previously tried unsuccessfully to pitch the neighborhood as part of SoHo, real estate promoters and others came up with several different suggested names for this newly upscale neighborhood. The name that stuck, first taken from an ad campaign in the Village Voice by real estate agent William R. MacLeod, Jr. in 1994, was Nolita, an abbreviation for North of Little Italy. This name follows the pattern started by SoHo (South of Houston Street) and TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal Street).

That site lists upcoming singles so it looks like it may be the first single. But its weird because I always assumed it would be a song we had at least heard the title of and that Vanessa herself would blog something. I wonder if its a mistake?

Well done czarina for finding this. If the single will be released in July, I'd guess that the album would follow in September or October. "Nolita Fairytale" is a very interesting title.
Now we know when the single is out, I think we should organise some sort of initiative for people to request the song at radio stations, vote for it on video countdowns, spread the word about it etc. We could have a thread with links and email addresses to different websites for radio and video stations. What do you think?

I love it. It's awesome and it does sound alittle different from what she would usually do (unless it's only me who thinks it). It sounds quite jazzy and I'll admit, it sorta reminded me of John Mayer's blues side (that was the first thought in my mind, i'll have you know).

I agree guys. I really can't fucking wait for the new album. It was quite strange actually. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Harmonium and I formed the opinion that Nessa can never beat this and even she did [from Pleased to Meet You] however I really think she can with Heroes and Thieves. This track reassures me that she can.
I know this might be sadistic of me but I don't want to music to be, how should I say, commericalised in the comic sense. I guess that sounded a little wrong [perhaps I just can't explain what i'm thinking] but if you can work out what i'm feeling, i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one feeling like this.

I know. I'm so excited for it. It took me sometime to get into Harmonium (I still can't listen to Papa that much because I don't really like the chorus) and theres were always one track that I tend to skip (Wanted) but with all this new stuff coming out - I've yet to click that skip button.

I don't think there ever was any specific song in mind to be the second single off Harmonium, but I think someone on the o-board once mentioned that V had hinted that it would be Private Radio.

I don't think you can get a CD single but I'm quite sure, Private Radio came out on radio play after White Houses. It apparently made #9 in the Taiwanese charts in 2004. I'm getting these from Wikipedia. If you wiki Nessa, you can see all the singles that have come out and Private Radio appears as the second. Who's to say was released in 2005.

This explains the lyrics "My heart always seems to know" and "I want the soul instead" "I used to hover outside my truth" so well, doesn't it? It is a TAKE THAT at her old record label, a new outlook on life, refreshing way to follow her heart in her music....
Such a personal song and I love it, especially now that I know the meaning.
The only question is....will the general public love it as much as us, her fans? Dare I ask the question? Sorry to bring it up but this is what is going to be on everyone's mind. Most people don't get a second chance in the music industry. V's very lucky and we all know that is be cause she is talented and her old label is [insert flammatory phrase here].
So, even though I love it, I think "Hands on Me" would have been a better choice for her first single. I think it has more universal appeal....even though I can totally understand were V is coming from in releasing this as her first single to let everyone know she is back, following her heart and never giving up. What do you all think?

Hmmm.... at first I wasn't really impressed, but it's slowly growing on me. I think it's because I like her "dark side" and this sounds upbeat and summery. However, it is catchy and I'm sure I'll end up liking it. I love the guitar part.

Interesting. It took me by surprise at first, so I've had to play it again and again. I really wish I could hear how it starts out because I'd be able to tell more about it, but I certainly think it's something I could like. I mean, I do like what I can hear of it, but I'd rather form a more informed opinion.

I really wish I could hear how it starts out because I'd be able to tell more about it, but I certainly think it's something I could like. I mean, I do like what I can hear of it, but I'd rather form a more informed opinion.
I'm the same way. I don't like clips. It causes people to become bias one way or the other before hearing the whole song. In VC's music I think that is important because of the way we particularly listen to music. I'm glad to hear of a release date, though. I'm glad to hear she is about to release music and make money as well as supply us with fully completed music we can become excited about.

do you upload it with DSL or a slower broadband type? Cause it happened when i accidently uploaded it with other then DSL. If that makes sense! Like where it has speed options?

I feel the same way about Nolita Fairytale but I still think that it will be a better single than Hands on Me.

i dunno.. i really like this song, so far, though before i really pass judgement on it, i want to hear the whole thing (!!!).. i think hands on me would make a great single though.. and i think nolita fairytale could do well too. so all in all, i'm satisfied with nf being the first single and hom being a possible second.

Just as I think Private Radio would have been the best first single from Harmonium. I LOVE White Houses, don't get me wrong, it just wasn't the best way to start off her second album with the pop crowd.

I think that the summer is all about upbeat stuff.. I think it is a good idea to make a more up-beat song release in the summer, and more minor song for the fall or winter... I think that nolita fairytale is a decent song, I have not heard the whole thing.... But I think it is a better choice for people to jam out to some vanessa carlton - then be moved by HOM... The other choice was House/Home... Irv said that was going to be the single. It is very somber, basic, and mellow, but as it goes on it builds well... It becomes upbeat, but still minor, and has some good melodic structures that are movie-esq like HOM does

maybe that's why i don't like it so much? well i don't know if i don't like it, it just seems like a very different song for vanessa.. it sounds a lot like the weepies, you can definitely notice that influence.

good point. HOM is not as up beat. The corus is a bit upbeat though...but the rest of the song isn't. however, more people would be able to relate to it since it is a song about thinking that someone is your soul mate and that other person doesn't feel the same way. I have a feeling a lot of people have experienced this. However Nolita Fairytale is very personal to V and others might not be able to relate - kind of like white houses and why it did not do very well as a single. I haven't heard Houses yet though so I can't comment.

really? I think it sounds like a studio version of it too....I just listened to the us open version and this version and I think they sound different. This clip is much better - much clearer and V's voice sounds much better. Like she got her best take of the song.

er... i love the song, but I am not sure about the broken lyric fragments and the static two note chord ostinato. I am not sure I can stand so little development within such a short pop song--- it's ok if it's art music but i don't find this too appealling in many cases of manistream pop. There is really no real chorus.. and i am a bit dissapointed about that, but the bridge and part b of the verse is frickin' beautiful. Not having a chorus in a pop song is one of the riskiest things you can try to pull off so good luck to vanessa. Also, I would really love it if she resolved the "tale" in fairytale. Ack it bugs me to death and the word tale seems like it's tacked on. I was imagining the word "fairytale" would be smooth and open as fairytale is a very "pleasant" word. I would have prefered if she stayed on the same pitch for tale and concluded with the resolving chord after the piano ascending line, so I think vanessa's approach for that word is questionable. Also the reggaeton beat in the beginning and ending is just plain weird..... the whole song sounds like very WASP-y rock-mainstream and then comes in this reggaeton beat.... seriously, did lumidee come into the studio for a visit on the day this was recorded? I would have prefered some kind of piano prelude using the bridge piano ostinato. I am also wondering why in the world nessa would want to start the song on beat 2 of the measure.... just weird and i cannot come up with any plausible reason why that would be cool unless it's just to trick listeners into feeling that the two chord ostinato is very syncopated.
Man... I really hoped for a straightforward pop song with that great touch of vanessa (something like ATM) but it turns out vanessa is gonna take a risk with this new song (there are many things that are risky.. good? bad?? i don't know). I think this song would sell if everyone just heard the bridge and focused on the instrumentation and very optimistic tone of the song (I really like the optimistic tone). I think these are great strengths, but there are some weaknesses I feel that might not make this song as catchy as it can be.......... so let's see what happens.
by the way, who likes the "hey!" at the ending vamp? It kinda sounds like an avril lavigne gesture quoted from girlfriend :p well, as I said let's see how well this song will be received... ATM is still THE perfect song from Vanessa Carlton.

My 2 cents : I love the song!!! Great! But I agree with others that it is WAY too personal for it to be a single on the radio. People who are not her fans (and by this I mean big fans who are nessaholics or posted on her official website) are going to be like wtf!!! (as ordinaryday said). They are not going to want to listen to it cause they don't understand it. We all do of course and that is probably why I personally like it so much. She is being very open about her personal life and I love it.
I also agree with jsbachsonata - that the beginning and end are too reggeaton and it just doesn't work well that way. Plus the fact that there is no chorus is just plain weird and EXTREMELY risky. And I agree with everything else s/he wrote - I am just not a musician so I could never write it out so that it made sense.
Again, I must say as I have said several times on here, HOM would be a much better choice for her first single. Risks can work well sometimes. However, come on V we want you to go right to #1!! And with what happened to the second album, risks are probably not the best choice at this point.
I totally understand she wants everyone to know why things didn't work out before. But seriously, we want this record to do extremely well and I just really don't see that happening if this is the first single. I would LOVE to be corrected come Oct. but I am just trying to be realistic. Please, Irv, release HOM first so that V can go straight to #1 and the album sells really well!!! Or fix some of the things in Nolita Fairytale so that we have a chorus!

Yeah, I'm not sure if no chorus is the best choice. Maybe the "Nolita Fairytale... ba da da..." at the end will constitute as a chorus. I can see people walking around humming it.
Let's just trust V and Irv to promote it correctly. I can see it being a hit. I really do like it, it's great, but I have a feeling that I'll like the other songs on the album more (based on the songs we've heard).

AHHHH this is BRILLIANT! When I heard the first clip I SO wasn't keen on it- but the full production of it is perfect and really unconventional (at the same time as being perfect for radio).

I think I know what you mean. I want to like this song, i really do, but I listened to the full thing and it just... didnt jive. I can understand what shes saying but some of the words seem like theyre placed awkwardly in the song, and it comes off as somewhat amateur, which I KNOW Vanessa isnt. I can see why she wanted to release this song as a single, but shes done wayyyy better, in my opinion.
Also, my keyboard is acting weird and different keys are typing weird things... like the apostrophe key is typing èèèè and the backslash key is éééé . This is probably the wrong place to ask, but... what the hell is wrongÉÉÉ (question mark key right there)

My guess is that vanessa will do a lot of radio promotion. that way the DJs can ask her about the lyrics from the song.. about stevie, about the record label. Then she can play the song and people will understand.

I like this. I really like this. The sound is pretty, and the lyrics are personal, but I think it could actually lead some people who don't know her that well to dig in and try to find out what the hell she's referring to and uncover the story.

Is there a such thing as an adult fairytale? I think most fairytales are in children's books. A fairytale is a type of story. Even though we all know of some right off the top of our heads, most the time we have already have heard of them when we were kids, perhaps in a small book our parents read to us from a small book at bedtime. Maybe the song is depicting that through a format we can all relate to. Vanessa's idea of a musical children's book, or a G rated fairytale movie about her life and what she has learned from the events of her life. If you have been following her you could imagine how that might be seen as a sort of fairytale.

I think this song has a more mature AC sound especially with the instrumentation... "White Houses" on the other hand really sounds like it comes from a children's cd (yea, nessa does have a tendency to write songs that might be too "kiddy")
I think everything's ok when Vanessa finds that balance between a more rock oriented sound and a female singer songwriter tone. I think production, instrumentation, and rhythmic complexity in vanessa's line play a big part and I think NOlita covers those areas successfully to reach a more mature audienc.
When i first heard white houses, pyhom, and those linda perry songs they sounded like they came from a children's cd. The harmonic content is too bright. Coupled with rhythmic simplicity in most of these songs, they tend to drift to the "children's realm". I am sincerely hoping they are not on her newest album.

I think Nolita Fairytale is her way to show people she's still here and able to evoluate as an artist, try new sounds, talk about her experiences... I actually feel this song as the big new start for V. She's definately back!!
I love Nolita Fairytale, I think it's a beautiful song... Makes me think of a sunny summer day... :razz:

I actually really like Nolita Fairytale. The only "childish" songs of Vanessa were on her demo tape especially "faces" and "wonder." The only song that i don't really like by vanessa is... from her old stuff: faces, last fall, and from her new stuff: heroes and thieves. I don't know why but those songs just never got to me. Unfortunately, Nolita Fairytale sounds like something someone would sing when they're pissed off. Like changing the lyrics to a real song and putting in your lyrics of why you're mad.

I just wanted to say that Nolita Fairytale is a VERY good song, it has her own lyrics about all the things she's been through over the past. Yes its a change, but a good one. Even if it doesn't do well, its not a big deal. She's an amazing artist remember? She will never stop playing for us and so MANY people came out to see her live at her shows when Harmonium came out. I felt like a sardine in a can. I'm hoping for the best and I'm sure things will go well, but if they don't, thats alright. Her music will inspire us all and its not the sale or recognition that is important here. She is important to us and we know that.
As for Avril, I really like Avril Lavigne and "The Best Damn Thing" was different and very catchy. It was a new side and there are some good songs on the album: Innocence, When You're Gone, Keep Holding On. Everyone has a different opinion and you can't please anyone.
Still hoping for the best! I bet the shows are going to be paaaacked too!

I think it's to do with Stevie taking Vanessa under her wing in a way, and introducing her to a new audience after A&M dropped her.

I think people are just getting used to it. it is just very different. When it starts rotating on the radio people will warm up to it after a few times/days if they don't immediately like it right off the bat. Besides we have another single set up just in case this one doesn't take off that will do very well. I think this one will be in the top twenty pretty quickly. I already have it on rotation on my computer(I don't have a portable player(e.g. ipod.) I listen to at least 4+ hours of music a day despite that. I spend alot of time at home so it is not unlike me to listen to 8+ hours of music on a weekday after coming home from work. That is alot of music for someone who doesn't own an ipod or similar device.

I think the "hey!" sounds awkward. "Girlfriend" isn't the only song of Avril's with a "hey!" in it. The "hey!" kinda reminds me of Avril too because it seems like something that is Avril's style (and I do like some Avril songs; I don't despise her, even though I don't like "Girlfriend") and not Vanessa's. Avril has/had that punk-y pop thing, which a "hey" fits into, but with Vanessa it sounds misplaced... so I don't think it is a "silly comment". I agree that the song would be better without it.
I love so many of Vanessa's song but I'm not obligated to like this one just because it's new.

I think all the hoopla in regards to the little "Hey!" at the end of the song is pretty moronic. Avril Lavigne doesn't have a copyright to the word hey or the usage of it in songs. GOD FORBID VANESSA USES IT. Get over yourselves, seriously.
And comparing Nolita Fairytale to a childrens song is a pretty bad analogy, if some of you guys are going to express your distaste for the song I'm sure you can manage better than that. lol :P
And I've heard of nothing but positive feedback in regards to the song from people I know, and the majority of my friends dislike Vanessa, but have taken to this song. So I think it's an awesome choice for a lead single.
You guys need to remember that she's releasing this song to reach out to people who aren't already fans of hers and reconnect with those who haven't been keeping up with her, so if it's not your cup of tea, hey, you're already a fan. This is Vanessa's comeback, she's not catering to us Nessaholics at the moment at all. It's not about what we want, as much as we'd like it to be. :lol:

Possibly, I'm not familiar with the song you mentioned, but Vanessa once described her writing method and says she finds phrases in classical music that she really likes and then embelishes on them and molds them into her own little pieces of work.
I do the same thing too sometimes, I'll hear a phrase or a bar in some piece that I really like and I'll steal it and change it and flip it around until it takes a life of its own and becomes a full fledged song.

I like the song and I like the "Hey!" When she says it, I picture her in NoLIta saying hi to a neighbor. It's friendly and fits the song.
I think I can understand where the "childish" comments come from, because her chords and rhythms are often pretty simplistic and harmonically bright, but I think Nessa deliberately puts some of her music to wistful, light music for juxtaposition. I often find her lyrics to be very mature. And even if this song is not very complex, I still enjoy the pleasant, "fairytale" feel.
I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get her new album in the Spring like we originally thought, but we Nessaholics are patient. I can certainly wait a few more months.

Lol, maybe I should instead say that patience is a virtue for Nessaholics. Individually, we have it in varying degrees, but I think the fact that we stick around and are so dedicated to V even through the long periods between her album releases shows some sort of patience. :)

Meh. I'm at work and I can't hear the music that well. I can hear the piano riff and her voice the clearest. Umm, honestly, I dont' like it and if it grows on me it will only be out of it's catchiness. Her voice is starting to annoy me. I wish she would soften it out sometimes and try to sound a little bit more polished and grown up. I like the raw childlike sound sometimes, but she is almost 27 and sounds 14 still. I just wanna go in there and soften the vocals out and ask her to hold a few notes out, just for a couple more seconds. Idk.... not my favorite =\ Who knows what I will think after a few more listens though.

I like the drums in this song, especially at the beginning and end because it is not just your regular boring everyday use of them. It gives the song it's own character. Drum rolls are cool. Even though drums are used like usual through the song, they are given a break and actually keep the rhythm of the song at places where it's useful.

It sounds like it is trying to mix too much together.. and I for one am no the biggest fan of it... I am of Vanessa so I think I will just go and support her and what she does... After hearing the whole thing I changed my opinion a little. There are parts of it I like but others that bother me. I still don't like the bass part.

I've been listening to it more and more over the past day and played it for some friends who had either never heard of Vanessa or only knew ATM, and the reaction was 100% positive. I can still see both sides of the argument that while it's a good song it might not be a commercial success. But, having been a fan for so long I respect Vanessa more for staying true to herself than pandering to the mainstream audience of MTV, etc. I'm just excited to hear new music, period.

I love the drums. I think the drums pull in a different type of listener than Vanessa's core audience. But, there's still the bridge which is very "typical Vanessa." The juxtaposition of the two is pretty fantastic. We can never predict what popular radio will love, but I think this stands a very good chance of being a hit. I'll be waiting with bated breath for the release...

I like the drum work (just the drum set part not the synthesized reggae beat part). I think it's very sophisticated but still not on par with the drum work on ATM. A lot of people don't notice this, but the drum work on ATM is very complex almost like it has a different line that complements the movement of the song. I think the drums in ATM were definitely what really turned me on to the song... that perfect marriage of percussion and melody. To this day, I still think the drummer on ATM is the PERFECT example of a great pop rock percussionist who knows how to move a song forward. Still haven't found any song to match up with it.
The drums on nolita on the other hand is nothing special but I would say it does fulfill its function satisfactorally in the song. It's pleasant but not impressive, which is good because it doesn't need to be impressive to make the song great.

I love the drum mix but I'm kind of feeling errrr over the whole "Well, Stevie knows and I thnak her so" part. It's just...bah. The record deal part is fine, but when she mentions Stevie, I just go...okay....
But I love the song and hopefully it does very well. Way to go, Carlton!!

Thanks for posting!! I LOVE it! The photography is incredible - it fits the song so well! It's too bad that they are apparently from San Fran instead of Nolita but they still get the message across. If you haven't seen it, you should take a look.

I had heard of it, and I knew what it stood for. Watching CSI: NY and L&O: SVU, I just got curious about where all these places were and what the names meant, so I just got to reading about it all one day. I would love to visit NYC, but I feel it would take at least a month for me to just get to know a little about Manhattan.

yes, i'll admit, i've been out of the loop for some months now. i had been an active member of the vc.com forums, but i kind of fazed out of that when things got dramatic over there. anyway, i've tried a few times to get some Vinfo, and so i've known that the vc.com site is down? why?
anyway, today i decided to once and for all figure out what ever happened to vanessa. nessaholics, ahoy! imagine my surprise when i discovered that we have an album release date, a single release date, and can, in fact, listen to this new single?!
so i heard "nolita fairytale." oh. my. god. i've been stomping around my house in HORROR. i'm sorry. in my opinion, it's a trainwreck. i feel like i'm "not speaking" with my former IDOL. the poppy tone, the not-even-trying-to-be-deep lyrics, the computerized voice - i was shocked. shocked and hugely disappointed. in my eyes, she became the world's biggest hypocrite right there: the song is all about "so what i got dropped from interscope i'm cool with it" (but honestly, it outright SAYS that...what happened to the unicorns and vampires?!)...and yet the style suggests that she is outright selling out.
what happened to the raw beauty of harmonium?! if i weren't in love with the song "heroes and thieves," i would have lost interest in this new album entirely.
i don't want to say that vanessa has lost me as a fan. but, clearly, i will not deny that i am currently lost for words, and not in a good way.
i am not some random spammer, i know how annoying those people are. i know i don't have too many nessaholic posts to my name, but a few of you will remember me from the old boards (hey, guys, sorry to meet again under these circumstances). i swear, i am a vanessa FAN. but i do not condone the idea that being a fan means accepting everything the artist does - i believe that we have every right to give our honest opinions of v's work, most of which i am in love with.
that was a long rant. sorry, guys. i hate to be a downer. but please, i cannot possibly be the only person that feels this way. i know it's sort of old news, so i'm also sorry if this is redundant to the boards.

I like the song all right, but it's not AMAZING or anything. I think the lyrics got simpler and more straightforward. There's some metaphore and such, but it really isn't as deep in emotional value, if you know what I mean, as the other songs were.
I'll admit I like the part that I have quoted in my signature though haha.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Although I personally love Nolita Fairytale, I can understand one's basic dissapointment with it. However, I must say the whole "not-even-trying-to-be-deep lyrics" part of your message didn't agree with me. As an artist, Vanessa decided to express herself how she feels the need to. Maybe she chose not to make it all metaphoric because, well, she was describing a situation close to her? Besides, we've heard tons of new music that will be on the album that have deep, awesome lyrics. "Hands On Me," anyone?
I'm sure Vanessa's decisions are based on what, in her opinion, is best for her new album.

i don't really care much for it, but i don't think she's selling out. i don't think you can sell out with one song.. even if that song is the single. all the other songs we've heard off the album are such that i can't possibly say she's sold out; unless none of those songs actually go on the album, which we know is completely ridiculous.

First off, I definitely think that everyone has a right to voice their opinion, even if it is not positive towards V.
However, I respectfully disagree. I really enjoy the new song (see my new sig!) I especially love the lyrics. I actually think they are the opposite to selling out! She sings "my heart always seems to know" "take the gliz back, I want the soul instead". Yes, they may be simple but they say that she is NOT selling out! If she was selling out, she would take the gliz that came with her record deal and instead sacrifice her soul and heart. In this song, she is saying that she is being true to herself and not going with the record company that wants to turn her into something that she is not.
And the lyrics "Take away my record deal. Go on, I don't need it" Does not mean that she is fine and dandy with her old record company being a jerk to her. It is her way of saying f*** you! You can take away my record deal, I will find someone else who wants to work with me - the real me - someone who will allow me to be true to my music. (however she is saying this in a kinder way so that she doesn't create massive problems within the music industry and her music gets banded again)
And she has done just that.
Now, the music is kinda strange to me - such as the drums, especially the reggeaton in the beginning and end...and a few other things. And I must admit is not my favorite song of hers. But I still like it - most importantly for the message.
Plus, I agree with others above in that her other new songs like The One, Hands on Me, etc are very reminiscent of her old songs. So, that also shows that she has not sold out.
Again, you have the right to your own opinion but that means so do I. I love how we have kept this as a good discussion and I am hoping we all can keep it this way (you all know what I mean here).

I would like the song much better if the lyrics were different, they just make it imposible for anyone (other than Vanessa herself) to relate to the song. Other than that I like the song.

She did that with Be Not Nobody and Harmonium too. The only two mainstream songs in BNN are "A Thousand Miles" and "Ordinary Day" (first and second single) and "White Houses" is one of the most mainstream songs in Harmonium.
Of the new songs the only one that I like more than "Nolita" is "Heroes and Thieves", I just melt every time that I listen to it, I can't wait to hear the studio version.
I also think "Nolita" can do well on radio, I doubt it will be as big as ATM but if it is big enough to put Vanessa back in the map I will be happy.

I don't think Nolita Fairytale is one of Vanessa's "mature" songs. I actually think some of her most mature songs have been unreleased. I still think Swindler is her best song to date, and Morning Sting is pretty mature as well. Nolita Fairytale is very much like a page out of her diary and I thought she said she was through writing about herself a few years ago. Or was that someone else? I forget. Anyhow, I like her more abstract music more. I like Heroes and Thieves and Nolita Fairytale is, meh, ok, but I hope there aren't even more songs on the album about her music industry struggle. There was already This Time before all those, and My Best might be in the same topic area, too. That might be a little bit of overkill. I know they aren't all exactly the same, but they do have a similar sentiment.

She should be walking around Nolita, wherever that is in NY. Imo she should put her dog in the video hehe. That'd be cool, but it might be boring if that's all she did. Maybe she can walk around different cities and boardwalks (near the ocean in one shot) but begin and end in Nolita, denoting that is her home or something. Idk. I thought she was all about San Francisco ;)

I disagree. As a future filmmaker, I can honestly say the WH video was great. Sophie did a great job. The only part I didn't like was at the end where Vanessa looked like she messed up a move and fell. The part where Vanessa looks at her dancing self and then gets up and dancing Nessa lies on the piano is just pre magic. :D

Right click on that and click "Save As", and then type "Whatever You Want To Call It.flv" for the file name, where Whatever You Want To Call It is whatever you want to call it. Personally, I called it "Vanessa Carlton - Nolita Fairytale & Interview.flv"
Just make sure to make ".flv" the extension, and download a Flash Video (FLV) player. I use the FLV player found here (http://applian.com/flvplayer/index_martijn.php).

Well, if I cry about the 115k, I'll die about the 56k. I don't think I could ever go back that far, myself. Very few sites still have "text only" options, and I'd have to leave my computer on and connected all night long to ever get any files! It's really irritating how most websites nowadays seem to assume everyone has at least a megabit connection.

The performance of the song itself is only that long yeah. The mp3 is the correct length of time. The rest of the video is longer because of the interview.

She seems high on something, or yeah, maybe she's just like that. She reminds me of my friend when she's high on her antidepressants and kind of flighty/loopy. It's kinda freaking me out how similar she's acting in the vid to my friend. Hopefully V's got it put together for the new record release. The song sounded better like that, but the piano does seem a bit choppy for just a solo/vocal. I think maybe her voice has gotten a bit deeper or more coarse, but she seems to have more control over it. Pretty cool.

I listened to it again and I think if I were V I might draw out some of the piano notes longer, at least at the beginning. The chords seem very short and staccato. She must like that bc I've noticed that about some of her other songs too. She really likes the pedal that cuts off note vibration. I'm dumb and don't know what that pedal is called =P

I think the important thing is she went out and did this type of thing for her fans. She came out to show us, "Here this is what the songs are about", "Here is where they were made."
I think she is looking around at her inspiration because ultimately that is what the point of the video is. She was sharing.

i personally like the song a lot, but i'm well aware there are others that don't and that's fine. it's their opinion. i'm sure they wont stop supporting vanessa.

Well I loved the 44 second clip, but was a bit disappointed when I heard the whole thing because it sounded so over-produced. The more I have heard it though I love it!! I'm inclined to agree. I think the piano version is much better than the album version but having said that, it's still not great in my opinion.
The percussion reminds me of a Tahitian Dance workout DVD I have. :?

I like the message but I think it will be lost on most people. Not many people who hear it on the radio will have a clue what she's singing about. Also, if they do find out what she's singing about, it has nothing to do with them. That's just my opinion though; some people may find they're able to relate to it on some level.
The same message shown from a different angle could be a brilliant song, but for me this isn't.
In my opinion she definitely can do better.

I loved the song with just the piano actually,on the recorded version I loved the percussion! I enjoyed the melody and how personal the lyrics are to her and I loved the fact that her apartment was a bit messy and she doesn't seem to mind,but the editing of that video...was like a cheap high school graduation video with cheap effects and why was it spelled HEROS??? in the video and in the video description :?: :?: and the "V TV" logo...so cheap! note to irv: increase her budget!!!

Ya im like 100% sure its in Eb.....there are two big indicators...
1. The last note she plays is Eb....(this isnt always an accurate way of looking at the key of a song...but it often is right)
2. When she plays that loud octave part of the song where she goes up 5 notes...she plays Ab, Bb, C, D, Eb. That pretty much shows you its in Eb. :)

Just as you are entitled to your '2 cents' so is everyone else on this board. Part of being a mature fan is not worshipping everything Vanessa puts out but looking at it with a critical eye. You could say this is doing Vanessa more of a service as a fan than simply blinding accepting everything she releases.
For some of the more musical people on here, this is clearly going to come into their judgement of a song. If people think it is childish, they are more than welcome to critically evaluate the song in this way (or 'give vanessa crap about it' as you so aptly put it).
I can see why you want everyone to love 'both sides' of Vanessa- but the fact is not everyone does. I think more than anything it's because this song appears to be a reversion to a less sophisticated style of writing that people didn't expect from a supposedly more musically mature Vanessa.

This just makes me laugh. I don't think anyone on here was 'blasting' Vanessa's song or criticising others for having a different opinion. Some people think the song is childish- and they genuinely think it's childish- not because they think they are superior. Why do you have a problem with people saying that?

I think there is a misunderstanding on both sides. You are agreeing on more points then you might realize. Either you like the expression in the song or you don't. Luckly Vanessa isn't so one sided as to not be able to attract one or the other of us, but all of us, individually, in something we like about her music; in the music she writes. Be it this song or any other.
No matter what your viewpoint is, I think most of us would agree we want Vanessa to do well.

Go ahead and laugh all you want. Really. You seem to entertain yourself more so than anyone else on this forum could. There isn't a problem when someone expresses their opinion about this song, but there's a fine line between expressing an opinion and judging a song by saying it is actually childish and not mature. Which is entirely objective. And others have done that.
Music is a huge and integral part of culture and history. But no matter how you look at it, or how life changing it may be for you, music is still fucking music. YOU apply the deeper meaning of music to culture, history and yourself, music doesn't apply anything to itself other than the fact that hey, it's nice to listen to. Don't lecture me about something I go to school for and am earning a degree in.
And there's a huge difference between analyzing and giving CONSTRUCTIVE criticism from tearing something to shreds and beating it down because people are being nit picky punks, aka "I DON'T LIKE THE HEY AT THE END OF THE SONG, WAHWAH."

You don't have to have a "constructive" reason to dislike the song. There's just not much about it that appeals to me. I DON'T like they "hey!" at the end of the song and I don't have to like it; I think she sounds silly. I think her lyrics are childish and I feel she has regressed since her last album and it bums me out.
The only constructive criticism I could offer her on this song is to pretty much rewrite the entire thing. Sorry, guys, but I'm not going to worship something Vanessa shit out just because it was Vanessa. That's not my style.

I didn't say anything about "constructive reasons". Whatever the hell that means. You can like and dislike the song, it really doesn't matter to me. I was talking about criticisms. I'm just saying that rather than being a douche bag concerning your opinion, you can express it in better ways.
I just feel sorry for Vanessa in the end, because concerning her most loyal fanbase, she's damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. We all want Vanessa's album to become a success, and we all have to remember, this is her COMEBACK. Heroes and Thieves isn't about us - her already existing fanbase in the sense that Harmonium was. Right now she's trying to reach out to others who normally wouldn't listen to her music and re-establish connections with previous fans. Everything is pure straight up business at this point, this is make or break for Vanessa.
You don't have to like Nolita Fairytale, but we should still support Vanessa and her endeavours. There'll be other singles from Heroes and Thieves. Awhile ago I asked if anyone had ideas or plans for another ATR project themed around Nolita Fairytale, and no one said anything. I think it's about time we get the gears in motion, October will be here before you know it! :)

i was listening to Q104 here in cleveland today and actually they played "nolita fairytale" twice in one hour.. but only because they have these contests where its an artists new song vs. another artists new song. it was vanessa carlton 'nolita fairytale' vs pink 'who knew'. everyone who called in, except one person, voted for pink, and quite a bit of people called in. i'm thinking people won't be liking the new single?? but maybe it will catch on, kinda like how pink's first single 'u & ur hand' really struggled the first few weeks until people caught on. and if not, i'm sure HOM will blow people away when it hits radio!

Sarah is awesome, but her humor isn't for everybody. It's definitely a more evolved, smarter humor. Some people don't get it. Her show is hilarious and she did awesome at the MTV Movie Awards. The Paris joke was a low-blow, but did you expect her to not say anything about Paris?

What makes you think that? It's been less than 24 hours since the song has been released to radio. This is just the start of the project. I'm sure The Inc will be doing everything to promote Vanessa - they've invested a hell of a lot in her (I'm not just talking financially, either). Irv seems to really care about Vanessa and her music.
I'm almost sure there will be a physical release at some point. She needs to shoot the video (which I imagine will be in a few weeks time).

just go to the iTunes store and than click on music on the links to the left than click on pop under generas list of music than they have the whole top songs on the right, click on that for more than scroll down and they have the top whatever # of songs. Shes # 49 still I think yup she is.
I couldnt find it. I click on pop....then on the right....it says Top Songs....and it shows the top 10...then under that it says Top albums, and it shows the top ten. Next to top songs there is an arrow that i clicked on....and it shows the top 100...it says #49 is Falling for You. by Eva Avila....:S
oh well um are you in the US? that might be why it does not show it.

The Inc Records uses a color scheme of red, black, and white. And it's pretty obvious they're incorporating that theme into the Nolita Fairytale cover/promo posters we see, it just signifies that she's now part of the Inc family and that's a way of presenting the message.
No matter how ugly it is, that's why they're using the color scheme.
I just hope the album cover doesn't incorporate the same red, black and white theme as well. I wouldn't really be too worried about it guys.

I like the Heroes & Thieves design, the lettering. It's very vintage. I have a feeling it's gonna have like a old fashioned feel to it.
It does look a little amature.
I hope she looks HOT in the artwork though.
Especially with all these new rap guys. They'll want to make her hot.

It looks like something I could put together in 20 minutes, that's my main problem with it. The colours aren't the issue. Using the same font as the first album is a bit blah, but I can live with that I guess.

Um, don't catch an attitude just because I (and others here) think the cover looks like shit. Who cares what length of time it took for the person who made the poster? The end result looks terrible compared to what we're used to seeing from Vanessa.

If I am not mistaken (and i could very well be) Vanessa designed the artwork for her prior albums and I'm pretty sure that font is based on Vanessa's handwriting. The new artwork looks like it is the same style..Vanessa's style.. please please correct me if I am wrong or clarify...

You're not catching my drift. If the promo single and promo poster look like that, it gives a pretty clear indication of what the album cover will look like.
My opinion is BASED off of the promo single cover & poster for the album. If I see something completley different and brilliant like I did when I first saw the first two album covers, then that would be great. But BASED off of the promo single cover & poster, the album artwork is going to look similar (i.e. not the same) to what we've been seeing so far, and because of what I've seen so far, I don't have very high hopes for the artwork. As I say, if I see something completley different, then it would be great.

I am looking forward to seeing a music video for Nolita fairytale.
I wonder if VC will do a performance video (her and the piano) or will she act out the songs lyrics or have actors do it... There are a lot of different concepts the video's director could play with... I'm surprised that I have not heard any official news on plans for the video. I guess one step at a time.. we need the song to be on radio rotation nationally first;-)

Not that it would be the end of the world if this were the album cover, but I sure as hell hope you're right. I don't particularly favor it (though red and black is awesome), but the faded red cameo picture has got to go, and the black background is bland. BUT, it's the music that counts. and surely the lyric booklet and back cover slip will be different. but the colors don't represent the album at all.

Something like that, yeah. We wont have hardly any information about Vanessa at the minute as the UK release date will be different from that of the US's release date. Once the video is shot for "Nolita Fairytale", sent out to TV music channels and promotion starts kicking off, we should hear something then regarding the single & album release date.
