So yea tonight at the concert Vanessa premiered this song. It is absolutely amazing. it pushed into my top three Vanessa Songs. She has a lot of hard melodic structures in it for her voice.
This song is very emotional, and clearly about her and Stephan. before she played it. she said it sounds like HWBTW
"Speaking of rock-stars I think it's best not to date them"

Her vocals are awesome on this song... the vulnerable quality in her voice at the end of the clip tugs at my heart strings a little. It's very very pretty.

Actually, I'm pleasantly surprised. It sounds very pretty. I might beg to differ a little bit, her voice does have some more control, but the last few notes were still a little bit iffy sounding to me. But I'm sure they sound pretty all done up in the studio. I'm thinking some rich harmonies on those lines would sound very nice. I also hope it has strings :) It sounds like a song with a lot of potential... do you have the whole song?

ya just from listening to clip of Fools like me you can tell shes really pushing to hit those notes...i can imagine that that would affect her performance...unless she always keeps it till last...

She did it in the late middle. It messed up her performances of Home, and nolita fairy tale and A thousandmiles...... and Edge of 17

I think part of her problem with those notes is that she tries to sing them strongly. When most people sing high notes in that way, they do it in a whispery, light tone. I'm not sure why V doesn't just do it that way. Maybe she can't, I've never heard her sing whispery and light, but if she can I think she should. It sounds prettier anyway. V sounds nasal when she goes falsetto because it sounds like she is pushing the sound out through her nose, like her throat closes up or something. Maybe she will practice more and get better at the high notes, but her voice might just not be that high =\

OMG she did a cover of Edge of 17? I must be psychic. When she first started touring with Stevie I predicted she might cover that, and that it would be the best Stevie Nicks song for her to redo =P Was it good?!

Personaly when an artist does that to me it is like lower the song or something because you can clearly not sing that! I love how like a m. Carey can sing loud and high.. she has gotten a lot better with her high notes.. her head voice is improving a lot! I would not doubt that she will work at it. It is very easy for a woman to go nasaly in a falsetto

I have always found this to be a very interesting topic.
I have only ever heard Vanessa use her chest voice and her head voice. You can tell when she flips to her head voice because it can sometimes sound very breathy. One of the keys is to be able to control the transition from your chest voice to your head voice smoothly and almost undetectably.
A second important fact to managing these multiple registers is knowing when to hit what note out of what register... for example you can belt a note out of your chest voice or flip it up to your head voice. I think there are also instances of Vanessa stressing her chest voice instead of leveraging her head voice.
Mariah Carey is one of the few pop artists i know of to make use of the whistle register aside from JoJo recently and Timberlake is a great example of the falsetto register being used.
My understanding is the following...
Women have chest, head and whistle registers.
Men have chest, head and falsetto registers
And roughly, the head voice of a woman is generally compared to the falsetto register of a man.
I friend of mine is an exceptional singer and she worked with vocal coaches to overall improve her voice, range, air control, etc. I think Vanessa could be even more amazing with some coaching.

When it comes to Vanessa she's a pianist first and foremost, when she writes her material she writes the music first and and lyrics/melody are an after thought.
I know a lot of people who have an extremely hard time writing music in that manner, and need to write the music to suit their melody and lyrics, not write lyrics and a melody to suit the music.
Vanessa has even said that she never thought of herself as a singer, but that singing her own material is one of the most organic experiences she can bring to herself.
Which is awesome, I wouldn't have it any other way either, but she certainly doesn't have an amazing blow out your ears type of voice. Back in the Be Not Nobody days her voice was all over the place and used to be really really pitchy. It worked for some songs, but she had a hard time controlling it especially on songs like Wanted... like, that "More than you saaaay-ohohoh" she stressed towards the end of the song, hoooly crap.
And don't you guys remember Vanessa talking about having a vocal coach leading up to the recording and release of Harmonium? I forget her vocal coach's name... some girl. lol But she improved a lot with Harmonium! I mean, C'est La Vie has really awesome vocal play within it. I remember people complaining that she lost some of the emotional quality in her singing with Harmonium because she improved on her tonal quality and control. There's a double edged sword when it comes to singing, the more technically precise and perfect you become the more you lose the emotional quality in your voice. Mariah Carey is a fucking amazing singer, but she has no emotional quality in her voice because she belts everything and stresses the way she's singing something instead of why.
But it wouldn't hurt Vanessa to use a little more coaching, I agree, when she extends her range she borders on getting nasally, which is very easy for women to do when they use their head voice. So it's not like it's a problem only she experiences.
Well, what I'm saying is, in regards to someone who doesn't think of themselves as a singer and doesn't have much training in that aspect, I'm still very impressed with Vanessa's voice. Even now, she sounded great during the live performance of Nolita Fairytale. :)

I don't think all well-trained singers lose the emotion in their voices! I can see how you could definitely argue that with some artists, but I don't think it's true of all and I wouldn't say it's true of Mariah Carey. In her more poppy, released songs she does sometimes seem to just be "singing", but on some of her ballads, in my opinion there is tons of emotion there. She is just an extremely talented lady, though!
I will admit that some of my favorite V recordings are her live BMI recordings pre-record label or studio album. I still love to listen to those performances of Wanted and Swindler. That is my hands down favorite version of Swindler available. Later, when she made it a studio B side, I cringed. It had no character anymore.

I feel the same... Since I first heard the song it keeps floating in my head... I love this more than Home (though I loved the chorus of Home...) but Fools like me... It is definately my second fave Nessa song... It's so beautiful.
That songs is a sad one for sure, vocals are so sweet... So much passion and emotion within them... And the lyrics... So perfect...

I don't have sheet music software and I can't easily describe the way it's played, but if you know the chords and play around with it you might get it. Also, feel free to correct me. When she starts singing the verses it's soooo deep that I couldn't make it out :(

The more I listen to this song I really like it.

I think the main thing is being able to understand what the person is saying, and I was a little confused about the Vanessa crying reference, but other than that she was perfectly understandable. :)

unless, of course, english is the person's first language and they are making no sense. in which case, it's just kind of sad. but private-radio is a 13 year old whose first language is french, so like you said, as long as you can understand her/him it's fine.

I don't think it will be like "Afterglow"; before anyone knew about "Nolita Fairytale" Vanessa said that "My Best" could be the first single, so I guess it's a more radio friendly song.
there have been a lot of potential singles.. there was the promosquad thing with this time, everybody thought HOM would be, vanessa said my best, a girl who sang backup for the album thought it was supposed to be heroes and thieves, and now it's supposed to be nolita fairytale. lol

Ok, so I haven't really picked out any songs lately and I'm kind of shabby, but I figured out at least the basics of the beginning of the song. I don't have sheet music software and I can't easily describe the way it's played, but if you know the chords and play around with it you might get it. Also, feel free to correct me. When she starts singing the verses it's soooo deep that I couldn't make it out :(
Left hand: C/G, Ab/Eb, Bb/Eb
C/G, Ab/Eb, G/Eb
C/G, Ab/Eb, Eb/Bb^
C/G, C/G, C/Eb (The last two might be Bb instead of C)

Umm, the left hand and right hand lines are played together obviously :) The note that she keeps hitting between them is the Bb.

I just realized it is in 6/8 and not 3/4 that is why I have not been able to figure this out... So I am working on it... I just got the bridge, and most of the chorus! i have been listening to this so many times, and it was right in front of my face... alriht probably tommorow afternoon

I always get my parts on eBay because Dell charges way too much for parts. A spare battery? $60! A power cord? $40! The little rubber foots on the bottom of the computer? $12!!!! What the hell?!?! For that, I just bought a $2 pack of stick-on foots at Wal-Mart.

i noticed these incorrect lyrics on the first recording, but wasn't sure. from the new recording i'm definately sure it's "words you could never say", not "which you could never see" (although i quite like the incorrect lyrics :))

I was thinking it was "words you could never say" too, that makes more sense than saying a thunderstorm has tones you could never "see" - especially since it sounds like she says thunderstorm (singular) and they in reference to the object (plural).
