I work for an ISP so I see the variations on available speeds to our different contracts and it makes me curious.
For me personally, years back I had dialup, then went to 0.6M DSL and about 2 years ago it went to 1.5M and as of next Friday I'm getting upped to 7M. WOOOOO Let the media whoring begin.... errr continue.
If you don't know what speed you're getting, take the speedtest:

ex: 1500kbps = 1.5M or 3000 = 3M
Round up to your closest result.

I have Cable and a wireless router attached, so i donno if that's affecting it..

I have about 8 down and 700 up....but I always have files transfer slower than that because of the other end. I usually download at between 200 and 500 for each file.

I took the test and I got 4854 kbps so I guess that rounds up to 5...

Where is a good place to download a real file to see how fast your speed really is? Maybe a place to download a large file similiar to what a movie would be. I have yet to download at what my max is.

well the school internet sucks, so here it's 2.9 haha. At home, I'm not really sure, but I know for a fact it's at the very least, twice as fast.

well my wireless connection is only 1.5, but I have a DSL router which goes pretty fast which is on the computer downstairs that I don't really use anymore. I had to upgrade my computer and get a faster router when I used to play RPG's.

at work here I get 5M. We got 6 T1s coming to the corporate office.

According to the test, my connection with the Atlanta server gives me 131 kbps down and 103 kbps up, which is really close to the 115.2 kbps either way I'm theoretically supposed to have. 8)

eh either way I used to have Dial Up...sucked soooo much and I just hated it soo much took 3 freaking hours to download a freaking song from the iTunes music store don't get me started on music vid's that took longer than we got AT&T Yahoo. That made my year.

Well that sucks..... the upgrade happened today. From 1.5 to 7M.
Actual speed on the XP computer, little over 5Meg (still good, I'm not complaining), actual speed on my main computer which uses Win98... still 1.5, turns out Win98 caps at 1.5! ugh! I think I need to upgrade to a better computer. lol

i am the biggest nerd when it comes to computers and can figure out how to do anything, yet the way the internet works is something that continues to baffle me.

kbps... that depends if it's kilobits or kilobytes. If it's kilobytes, it's fairly fast (for U.S. standards =P). If it's kilobits, it's ridiculously slow >_>
I get 5915 kbps down and 489 kbps up.

eh I never really got into the whole speed I just got DSL from Dial up so I am soooo happy to get rid of that AOL crap.

So you fit into the 0.6 range. That is really slow for Cable. Maybe try resetting your modem & router. Or if you bypass the router completely and still only get 0.7, call Roadrunner.

HELP!
ok, so i called time warner to find out why my internet is so slow.. and it said that that speed is normal for the package we have... which is ridiculous because they said we were getting the fastest available when we signed up.
so i'm looking at other options, but i'm confused since i dont know the equivalents between kbps, M, or MB.
i'm looking up AT&T and it said their fastest available DSL is
IP Address: 1 Dynamic
Downstream Speed: Up to 6.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 768 Kbps
at 34.99 a month.
is DSL wireless? (we have 3 apple laptops and a desktop PC)
and what is the difference between DSL and cable broadband??

I get a hearty 22310 KB/Sec DL speed and 2813 KB/Sec UL speed at school. I <3 my university internets, lol.
6MB per isn't too bad Jessica, but it depends on what you actually would get because you may not get the full 6 with the DSL.

I believe Cable is usually faster than DSL unless you're in an area of large cable users. You can get a faster connection with TW by paying more but it isn't worth it to me.

DSL comes through the phone line, so unless you're in one of the very few areas where they offer it naked, you also have to have a phone line running to your house. Once it's in the house, you can use a wireless router to connect your laptops to it without wires. Is that what you're asking?

Jess, 6.0 Mbps is actually pretty good. But be careful because very often, ISP gives you the theorical speed and not the actual speed possible on YOUR line.
Here in France, I have an 8 Mbps DL and 320 kbps UL DSL access and it's more than fine.
IMO, getting more than 10 Mbps is a waste of bandwith and money because it won't be of much use unless you have to stream HD videos.

I'm curious too Kev; I'm paying for an ADSL2+ connection but the speed
test I just ran is suggesting I'm getting much less than I had expected...

My internet has gotten extremely slow! I don't know if I should buy a new modem. (Suggestions?)
I upgraded to 6M today, and they said it won't take effect until Jan. 7 since it takes three days. I like to stream movies on netflix and I take online classes, I need something that goes fast and stays connected. On top of that we have 1 Desktop, 3 Laptops, 1 MacBook, 3 iPhones, and 1 Blackberry that take up the connection. I'm sure the phones don't really take up a huge chunk of that anyway...

With Comcast I average around 12-15meg download. It's nice.
