Hey ya'll,
I haven't visited these forums in a looooong time, but I just had a Nessa Sighting and I thought I'd pass along the good word.
So here I was, tonight, around 5:20, visiting a friend who lives down on Bleecker Street, right above The Bitter End. I had to be someplace at 6:00, so I was leaving his place around 5:45, walking down the stairs (it was a short visit), when what do I hear, but a very familiar style of piano, and a very familiar voice.
Sitting in his stairwell, from where you can hear the goings-on inside The Bitter End, I listened for about 2 minutes just to make sure. The cadences were right, the tone was right, the piano was right. It had to be Vanessa Carlton.
So, I stepped outside to take a look at the venue's schedule, and peer through the windows at who was playing at the piano. It was from far away, and she seemed to have shorter hair, but the way she played and the face I saw: it was Vanessa Carlton. Then, I went to check the venue schedule, but on the flyer it said "Gwen Carlton (6:30)." Now, I didn't want to sound like an idiot and go up to the box office and ask, "Are Gwen and Vanessa Carlton the same person?" (a novice question, I know). So, I just stood there listening to her play through the door and windows. The manager came outside to smoke a cigarette and, though I knew I had someplace to be from 6-8, I asked him how much tickets were for the 6:30 show. "$7," he replied. So, either Vanessa's sister sounds exactly like her, or we got the real deal there.
I didn't get to go at 6:30, but just to let ya'll know, she's testing out songs to audiences under the name Gwen Carlton. She wasn't up for any more shows on the flyer in the future, but these things change. I know I'll be over at The Bitter End looking for "Gwen Carlton" on their weekly schedules.
I'm excited for her new stuff. From what I heard, it sounded excellent.

Hmm very interesting! That's very smart of her to use her sister's name, she's been getting a lot of publicity lately and paps are starting to get a shot of her... very smart V!

I wish I could have, but I had that school event. From what I heard of her warm-up/sound check though, sounded good. It was just her and the piano. The piano work reminded me a little bit like what was on Papa, kind of rushed and chaotic, but perfectly in tune and on tempo. I don't know, Papa always kind of reminded me of the eye in a storm for some reason. But that's what the vibe was from what I heard.

But i dunno...it kinda seems weird she would want to perform under a different name when she hasnt really been put into the spotlight very much at all yet....

She is trying to be like Jewel and Michelle Branch... they are so much better than her... and she's never going to make it in the business." Gwen's response...
Imagine taking three years out of your life to follow a passion. Vanessa dropped everything in her life to follow her music . Her music is who she is, and just by seeing one video of hers and listening to one song, you can only get a slanted oppinion. I highly doubt that you have ever seen her in a club spilling her guts out on the piano, then you can truely realize that this girl is for real. I dont know that you are even going to read this, but dont worry my sister most likely listened to your judgemental comment. There is a part of her that is scared to give her whole self out there into the world and to be getting judged for it. She knows that this is the backlash she gets to show people that there is more to music than Britmey Spears and O Town. People like you who dont even get to see the whole picture will realize that there is more to her than just an image, but there is a heart and passion to her music, and if you are blind to this I would wish that you tried a little harder to see it.

Haha, Vanessa knows that if she plays new material at a show using her name it'll get end up being recorded by one of us and distributed on the internet.
Maybe that's why she really hasn't been playing any new material aside from Fools Like Me.
I'm curious as to how she feels about the bootleg's concerning the new material floating around now.
She's probably all, "Uh-uh, fuck them, this is not getting leaked out." lol

that's a good question... i dunno if she would really be using a different name to attempt to hide from "us" though... us booting her shows is really the least of her worries (in my opinion). I think about it this way...
She has a guaranteed sale of her album with all of us, if not multiple copies.
She has a guaranteed promotion by word of mouth from all of us.
There is really no "harm" in us hearing the new material.. the audio recordings generally out there are not super great and multiple versions of the same song just interest us even more. Look at Kulp and his multiple versions of Nolita Fairytale fun :)
If i had to guess the reason she shys away from bootlegs is she seems to be a perfectionist and doesn't want audio recordings out there that are less than perfect for general consumption... I also think if she was going to perform under another name she would use one other than her sisters... clearly it didn't take long for us to be chattering about her potential performance :)

All of this is SO true. There is no truly logical reason why Vanessa would play under Gwen's name. Kaysha, I think you're right in saying that bootlegs are the last thing on her mind!
We have already established that Gwen and Vanessa look very similar, and so it's hardly surprising that Gwen might have a similar voice to Vanessa.
It's also quite probable that Vanessa has helped Gwen to play in the places she used to- i.e the Bitter End.
My guess is that it's fairly straightforward0 Gwen Carlton is actually playing in the Bitter End.

I'm not crazy about Gwen. I think she's a talented pianist, but needs a vocal coach, although she has an excellent voice and could go far. Same thing with 'nessa, how she puts feeling into her voice.
However, I think that VC has progressed a long way voice-way as well... I agree with PianoPlayer that I'd LOVE to here a V&G duet.

Ok, after seeing a couple topics about "Gwen Carlton" playing at some place in NYC, I'd like to say that I really don't think it was Vanessa... because Gwen does seem to be trying to get into the music industry. She sings and plays the piano just like Vanessa. Check out www.myspace.com/gwencarlton, you can check out all her songs and stuff. Just thought I'd share the info with everyone :wink:

I've been a V fan for a long time and absolutely love her but I don't think it's fair to compare the sisters and imply one is better than the other. Both Vanessa and her sister Gwen are truly beautiful and talented women. It is true that they have similarities but they also have very different styles. :D

I, too, was having trouble using any of the links on her myspace page using Internet Explorer. I had to use the TaB key to get to any of them. I don't seem to be having that problem in Mozilla Firefox, however. I highly recommend Firefox, anyway. :D

I think "Desert" sounds the most like V on her myspace page, but I don't really think they sound that much alike on the other songs.
Her lyrics are a LOT more meandering and hard to follow haha.

I know what it is like to be referenced as the younger brother of Mike. I had friends who were always referenced by their older brothers instead of their own identity. It is as if your own identity is subject to someone else's. It's not a good feeling. It's as if you become more of a reference than a real person.
"Oh, that is Tylor, Mikes younger brother."
"That is Mike's younger brother"
"Oh, I'm sorry, you're Mike's younger brother, aren't you?"
People tend to use the reference rather than, "Oh hello Tylor. How are you today?"
It sucks when people are always referring to you or addressing you in the second person, rather than the first person, all the time.

I mean, Gwen is now doing what Vanessa has been doing for years. It's not as if she is trying to be a champion swimmer and we are comparing her to Vanessa. If I had a famous musical brother or sister and I followed in their footsteps by trying to get into music, I'd personally expect the comparisons!
We aren't demeaning Gwen's individuality, it's just that our reference point on this matter is, undeniably, Vanessa Carlton.

ok, guilty confession (um, hope she isn't reading)
.... i added gwen on myspace....
then all of the sudden (few days later) she leave me a comment saying she likes my music and thanks for making her a top friend...
and i never added her as a top friend???
so, i look at my top friends and something really weird has happened myspace had added like 3 really random people to my top list.
so, now i feel guilty and i actually added her and added 3 more musicans that are friends of mine to my list.
I mean I like her music - i just wouldnt normally add someone so quickly to my list and 98% of my top friends list are friends of mine that i love their music.

I understand that comparisons between the two are inevitable (especially this being a Vanessa forum) but I just think it would be more respectful if we abstained form saying things like one is better than the other. After all it's already going to be hard enough for her to escape Vanessa's shadow wherever she goes. It was probably hard for her to even make the decision to pursue this new dream of hers...I'm sure she anticipated and was not looking towards the comparisons. I completely understand because I have a twin sister and we get scrutinized by strangers all the time. If they say your sister is better you feel bad...and if they say you're better you still feel bad. Anyway...that's just my humble opinion.
All I say is more power to both sisters! I LOVE V but I'm open to giving Gwen's music a chance too!

Do you really think so? It doesn't make any sense..V is a well-known musician and i think there are many people who would love to see her performing..besides, has she ever given a concert to an empty hall?!
It's great that Gwen is performing, because she has a lot of potential as a musician, but it's definately harder for her..maybe that's why she cut V out - she wants people to like her (and her music) because of herself not just because she's V's sister. pshhhh..so confusing =/

I don't feel bad saying that I prefer Vanessa's music compared to the songs of Gwen's that are on her myspace right now. Just as I'd critique any artist, it's not rude to say that Gwen has potential but needs some serious vocal training if she wants to go farther in the music business. It's true! No need to sugar coat!

Her singing isn't quite on the same level as Vanessa's but her piano is pretty close. Singing can be improved with practice so it isn't like something that can't get fixed. She's not Sanjaya at least!

Wow..I've just listened to Spektor's 'Begin to Hope' album and ok..I think what u guys've been saying is like 35% true..haha
But honestly, Spektor reminds me A LOT of Maria Mena.

All is know is that I should have been listening to Regina Spektor a loong time ago..lol
Ohh..I still prefer Gwen's songs though. :lol:

I think she is getting comparisons to Regina Spektor because she sings about abstract and weird things like eating cookie dough and stuff. Regina's "That Time" is the same way as "Snow". Has anybody heard "Reading Time With Pickle"? That song by Regina is crazy.

YEAH!!! I was just checking out her site today cause I wanted to hear some of her songs other than Fidelity (which i am addicted to now!!!) and I came across that one!!!
It is sooo funnyyy!!!!!
But the way she sings it, she sounds so serious!!! 8O :o :lol: :lol:

my songs are buyable?
It's the first day back after the ranch... this is always a tough day, it's like having to wake up after having the greatest dream I have ever had...
I always wish I could just fall back asleep and keep living in dream land.
Today I found out that snow was "hacked" and somehow downloadable by a different sight on the net and leaked 23 times... so I decided to take matters into my own hands and make my songs downloadable and buyable. I figured I couldn't really be upset about the leak... since I hadn't made it possible to buy. But now it is, so buy it pleeease :)
and to the guy/girl that hacked my song: I am flattered that you liked my stuff enough to hack into, but pleease buy it this time or send me a message that you want the song.

So, I decided to edit my post with the song 'Snow' now that Gwen's songs are buyable and downloadable at Gwen's own page and I think she's right not to be upset about what happended, since there was no other way for plp to get the songs however and I really think she should record a demo and sell it as well!! :D

The piano behind the voice & lyrics is decent, and even her voice could be good with some training, but right now I don't think she is good enough to really get anywhere unless someone really takes her under their wing. Sorry, but that's my opinion.

its funny why she erased her picture with v when they're little, she probably saw it here and we're talking about it.. and in her page she erased v from her influence..v was there but wasn't anymore. :?:
im just curious with vanessa's life and family. i wanna know how she is as a sister with gwen and her brother...yeah that kind of stuff. v's probbly a fun sister... and very inspirational. But since that i could never be her sister i wish im one of her best friends or the one she could talk to just for the hell of it...ahaha thats too much to ask:)
anyways i saw gwen's blog about her song snow being hacked... lol she's probbly ticked off... but still nice bout it... so yeah i thought she's really checking NH forum...:)
