When I first heard Come Undone, I thought it was OK, but I didn't even rank it in my top 5 favorite songs from HaT. But after 10 or so listens, it's now my favorite song on the album and in my top 3 songs of all time.
Has this happened to anyone else??
-
yup. i love it.
you've been gone so long
waiting here for you
you've been gone so long
come undone for you
man, i have a reallllly nice video to that song planned out in my head.
-
the first 48 seconds are terrible, but after that its one of my favorites on the album
-
yeah honestly. can someone cut that part out and upload the track?
-
ya it has grown on me...i still can't stand the first 48 seconds...but after that i LOVE it. :D
-
And i thought i was the only one who hated the intro. :D
-
i completely agree...
didn't care for it at first...
totally grew on me...
hate the intro :)
-katia
-
The intro wouldn't be so bad if it just ran once (20 secs) instead of twice. In any event if this becomes a single I'm guessing it will start after the intro.
-
^^ word...
But i just LOVE the song... its simply amazing....
the lyrics and the extended intro and outro are just amazing...
I dont really mind those 48 seconds... :P
-
What's wrong with the first 48 seconds?
[I didn't hear the song yet..]

its a VERYYYYY long and weird intro....
-
Yeah...I dont really get the intro :? whats the point of it? if someone listens to it they will just get annoyed and skip it probably, and after all it is pretty awesome! (top 3 for me now)
-
I like the intro a lot! Geez, you people. :P
-
that intro is annoying. It's like listening to feedback. I liked the song from the first time but My Best has grown on me
-
i do like the intro, but i dont think it goes with the song at all. it kinda seems like she just stuck it on the start cus it sounded cool, but it would work well on a sombre, dark even gothy song where it could flow well.

Agreed! I love Come Undone, always have. Number one favorite... tied with More Than This.

yes!!! the first part is whack but after that its such a beautiful and honest song...i love it anybody know how to play it? or have the sheets (r those even made up yet?)
-
And i thought i was the only one who hated the intro. :D
me 2...i hope ppl who dont kno about the intro will still listen until it gets to the good part...the only reason i did cuz i wanted to give it a chance...but i kno ppl dont have patience or the appreciation of v's work enuf 2 do that...its a real shame
-
ya it has grown on me...i still can't stand the first 48 seconds...but after that i LOVE it. :D
The first 45 seconds!!?? I love it! awesome dark and moody :D
ITS JUST LIKE DARK CARNIVAL!! and kind of like Superhero, the album version. It has that same weird thing happening. Hasn't anyone clicked? Its awesome as its like a minor version of the rest of the song.
I love all of Come Undone, and right from first listen the begninng was like my favorite bit!

I'm in love with this song. Come Undone and My Best are my favorite on the album.
-
its vocally her best song on the album...imo
-
don't know if it's been posted, but one of my really good friends, lee moretti from the upwelling (the band who opens for third eye blind a lot), did the backing vocals for the bridge for this song. oh, and the organ intro is connor, from the upwelling.
i love the song. :)
-
i love it too, especially the clapping and lee's backing, but the organ NEEDS TO GO.
-
yeah the clapping... in a random mood at times...I clap along with the song...
I keep thinking of Vanessa performing at this garden party... and when shes done... everyone is clapping...
-
i love come undone! i go on iTunes and put that song on repeat. it's definitely my favorite on the new album.
-
actually...the clapping and cheering in there is the only thing i dont like about the song...its kind of annoying
-

I agree. Really corny.
-
i was referring to the clapping in the actual song, not the audience thing. i think that's cheesy.
-
Come Undone has grown on me..
i love this song...
oh n i don't mind the intro though 8)
-
I've learned how to play the beginning piano part. It's pretty simple, actually. I mean, it has to be, or I'd never be able to learn it since I don't even read music. haha
-
honestly, this song has yet to grow on me. i try to listen to it but usually i can't get past the intro, and if i skip the intro it just feels too slow and like it won't amount to anything. also the clapping gets annoying.
im not saying the song is bad, but definitely, in my opinion, not the best on the album.

ah, ok...yeah, the clapping in the song is ok. haha
-

Agree. It was one of my favs of the album from the start, but I always skip the first part...
-
One of my favorites
-
I love that song, and it seems so connected with My Best for me.
-
Oh, I love Come Undone! Vanessa just sounds so fucking pretty singing it! :D
-
I love that song :)
-
First I didn't reallly like this song. But now I enjoy listening to this one and even singing it!
-
i loved Come Undone from the first time i heard it...its actually my fav song on the CD....ITS AMAZING!!!!
-
I agree with every word of Katherine. <3

Oh, and "Come Undone" should be the next single.
<3<3<3
Would compare to the Colbie Callait stuff that really blew up.....only 10x better. :)
-
My gosh, so I wasn't alone in my opinion about the intro. I thought I'd get torn apart if I ever expressed that opinion here!
-
Yeah, the intro is annoying. It was fine the first two times or so, but after that - ugh.
I have this video idea in my head of it being set in the Victorian times & in one of those posh plays in a nice old, haunted theatre. There's "two" Vanessa's. One where she plays on this really old, brown, wooden piano and the other Vanessa is acting in the play. You can guess the gist of the storyline for the video. Vanessa plays the piano intro as the audience walks in, and then the story unfolds. Then as everyone claps - like in the song at the end - Vanessa plays the outro while the OTHER Vanessa bows with the cast, waves to the audience, etc.
-
MEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Aww well the whole song grew on me piece by piece. The beginning is so Vanessa, it is like her soul crying, composing the feelings needed to begin the song, and once the piano begins after the 41st second mark she just pours more and more of herself into those keys.
Have to agree that this is her strongest song vocally on the album. Starting with the claps from the audience is where the song really begins for me and it just leads into the 3:48 mark where the piano really takes off. Just so slow and very stripped down beat but it just makes it that much more powerful.
My favorite song by far of her whole catalog perhaps.

I can see this easily.

Same here, though not really that quite disturbing intro.
-
Just for the story:
Yesterday, I got 1 hour of free time in my French university near Paris. I decided to go to the cheap piano in the little cafeteria. The 3/4 of the hour, I played Vanessa's songs. All my classmates didn't know any song (except A Thousand Miles...). But when I started the outro of Come Undone, they ALL loved it. They asked me the name of the artist, I replied: "It's Vanessa Carlton" " Huh... Who is this ?" "You know, the A Thousand Miles chick".
The next hour, we went back in class and a friend started looking for Come Undone on YouTube while he was coding his PHP website. In the end of the class lesson, I said to him: "Dude....You looped Come Undone the ENTIRE hour, I could hear it through your headphone" "You're right, I totally heart this song thanks to you. And I was also really productive" he said. I advised San Fransisco but he only liked the intro :D
-
That's cool.
I don't know how he sat through that 45 second intro after the third time in a row though, lol.
-
That outro makes up for the intro.
-
Yeah, the outro is real nice.
I could listen to an album full of instrumentals from her.
-
I agree. I bet she chose to include that track partly because of its outro and some instrumental parts of it.
-
I love everything about this song! The intro, the organ, the audience, the everything!
-
i love this song, but i agree the long intro just gets annoying. i took it off on my copy haha. i also dont like how they added the people cheering when she finised singing, its just weird to me. other than that, its a beautiful song!
-
I never really considered the intro as part of the song, just a separate entity (because it really doesn't "work" to me) It never had any influence on whether or not I like the song itself. Most of the time I'm listening to it in the car (long work commute) so I can barely hear it!
-
Agree re the intro, I just treat it as a separate melody before the song kicks in properly. Have to say I really love this song, fantastic melody, kind of uplifting I think, and I love the lyrics especially " I would add up what you mean to me but I cannot do the math" ;D Vocally also I think Vanessa is very very strong on this track.
I really love the clap bit, leads nicely into the amazing outro, just love it when we get a long instrumental from Vanessa.

Very strong vocal, agreed. There is one time she sings "you" where it's kinda scratchy but it seems intentional and I love it. I also love that quote; I know it's in regards to a significant other, but that particular line makes me think of my nephew because he means the world to me.

About the straining part, V had mentioned before that she loves to leave such flaws in her singing cause it makes it sound more raw and real.
And this song is very special to me. It IS uplifting.

oh I love the "flaw" I think it makes the song!

I've loved it from the start! It's such a great song. The outro is really awesome too.

Same here. It's just one of those few songs that I can listen to no matter what I'm feeling.
-
i never understood the lines "there are people in this lifetime that we should never meet. cuz to be here now without you, well, my life's so incomplete."
but now it makes totally sense! ok, i'm totally living this song. i really can relate it now to someone in my life.

yeah, it's almost like ..the person is bad for you, but makes you feel so good and whole. And when said person leaves, there is an emptiness and incompleteness

that's exactly what i thought! now that i'm in a situation just like that, it's so easy to understand.
-
This song has SO grown on me - one of my fave songs of hers at the moment <3
-
Does anyone have the edit of the song they could send without the intro? I lost my copy.

Does anyone have the edit of the song they could send without the intro? I lost my copy.
i have it, but the software i used to cut the begining always increases the file size... i can try to upload it somewhere, if you'd like?
-
@Martin: I just used iTunes to cut the intro of the song..would that work for you too, maybe? :)
-
Oh yeah, I'll try iTunes first and see how I get on with that.
Thanks for your offer, 'Whiterabbit'. I'll see how it goes first and if I mess up, I'll get back to you. But thanks a lot - I appreciate it.
-
Okay, I'm useless. Haha.
Could you upload it for me? Thanks so much.
-
Okay, I'm useless. Haha.
Could you upload it for me? Thanks so much.
Sure haha, where would you want me to upload it? Anywhere specific? I can't upload at the moment since I don't have a computer with me, using my iPod, but I will as soon as I get on :D
-
Would mediafire be alright? Thanks so much.
Yeah, upload it whenever you're free. Cheers pal! :)
-
Alright, I'll see what I can do!
