Title: C'est La Vie
Post by: heyheyitsaiste on November 21, 2007, 01:55:38 pm
I really, really, really, don't get this song.

I just don't seem to like it.  It also annoys me kind of that she says C'est La VAY.

I think she plays this song at like all the shows, too but I just really don't see anything special about this song.

I agree. I've never liked the song. I always change it when it comes on.

I don't mind it. It's the track that I skip on 'Harmonium' though.

Really??
I looooooooove this song.
I think it's really raw and hard and the drums are loud and and her vocals are really stripped down.
I think it's funny when she plays it live because she explains the song and she says it usually means That's Life, but she makes it her own by making it mean "Fuck it."

haha

C'est La vie is an awesome song. I guess though, it does describe the raw feeling of having the empty aloneness even though you may have someone you are attached to. Its like describing when the relationship is in a dead end. I only love it because I could totally relate to it. If you can't relate to it, of course it will make no sense and sound really annoying and boring.
That's also what I've found with Heroes and Thieves. Like I hated the One, but after I found myself in a situation where i could relate to it, all of a sudden I really liked it.

But yea, we only like what we know.

Haha this is a little bit off-topic, but that's one of the (many) reasons I love "Fools Like Me."

But yeah, I actually really like the cool chord progressions and the chromatic nature of the song. It's also really fun to play. And the Rhodes sounded really good live.

C'est la vie was written when she [meaning vanessa carlton] was on tour in Europe and her boyfriend broke up with her, so she wrote this song. C'est La Vie transfers to that is life in France but Vanessa Carlton re translated it into 'F*ck it' so now that you know the true meaning of the song relisten to it and see if you like it better.

C'est La Vie is French for Such is Life.
I don't know if Such is Life is the literal translation, but basically that's what it is.

yeah, basically "That's life" ...
you know, a thing to say instead of "oh well"
which is why I understand where Vanessa gets "fuck it" from.

I love C'est La Vie.
it's different and is one of my most listened to tracks from Harmonium
and I love how we have so many different variations of it =)

I don't love the song, but it's okay.

However, there are 2 songs I skip on Harmonium (She Floats & The Wreckage). On both BNB and H&T the end is the best part of the album, but not on Harmonium.

She Floats & The Wreckage are both kind of boring to me... not bad, but too slow and not grabbing enough. That's a shame because normally I like piano-and-vocals-only-songs, but only if they are as great as "Half A Week Before The Winter", "Papa" or "Wanted".

I was watching a concert on youtube and she said that this song was the song that made her switch to the INC records because this song made them want to control every move she made.

I personally love C'est la Vie, one of the best songs on Harmonium if you ask me.
Way before Harmonium got released and when she was playing C'est la Vie, Papa and She Floats live I actually got bored with it. I was really surprised to hear the album version and I really liked it.
I love the monochromaticness (is that a word?) of the song and the prominent drums. It's awkward and different in a lot of ways but I found that I like that in a song.
