Title: Third Eye Blind
Post by: Grakthis on April 15, 2003, 04:43:02 am
I can't believe there's no 3EB topic yet!  I just saw them live last night.  They are playing a Ton of new stuff still.  Great set.  AND they closed with God of Wine which was AWESOME!

They played a song they said they've never played before... I have the name of it written down at home including about 4 new songs I hadn't heard yet.  Crystal baller is a great song, Old friend coming over is a great song, wait for young souls is a great song.  I can't wait for the new album!

Man, ill never forget the first time I heard blinded... It was in Indy in 2002 and when he said the lyric thats something like "Ill wait right here for you in the shower, then go down on you for an hour", my friend Catie and I looked at eachother and we were like "Did I just HEAR that right?!?".  Good ol'Stephan.  Im not sure how they are gonna handle THAT line on the radio

Ahahaha, around here they started playing the song with the line.  And every time I hear it, it makes me laugh.  I was wondering if the youngins would pick up on that.  Perhaps some adult-type complained because lately a particular top-40 radio station has been playing the tune without the first verse!

Self-Rightous I like, but its weird.  The chick is a horrible singer... but it really adds to the charm.

vanessa plays the piano on "company" and can be heard singing very extremely softly in the background. per other rumors, she's not singing in "self rightous". that's some kimya girl who creeps the hell outta me...anyways, i love the ablum. my favs are: blinded, faster, misfits, forget myself, danger, my hit and run, crystal baller, palm reader, and the hidden track. if you haven't gotten it already, go get it now! it's awesome  :) -jess[/b]

I dont know if I've told you guys this story before, but when we went to see Vanessa in TN Stephan came out into the audience to sit and watch Vanessa! And I was one of like 3 people that actually recognized him.

He and his God Daughter came out into the crowd so I went and talked to him for a minute, he introduced me to her and then I left him alone to watch Vanessa.  I didn't have a pen so I didn't get an autograph.

Stephan doesn't sing the highnotes 99% of the time.  He's never been able to hit them.  Thats what Arion and Tony are there for.  Stephan just harmonizes with them.  if tony's mic was off, that would explain why they sounded bad.

oh and i have a question for someone who might know......

i was on the stephanjenkins.com boards last night and everyone was saying how the songs on ootv were written about charlize except for "My Hit and Run," to which people were saying was written about Vanessa 'after the accident'. what accident? who? where? i wasn't sure if anyone would know or not, cuz i couldn't get one out of the sj.boarders.....

Umm The song "my hit and run" is for Charlize,Stephan said so.The accident was like in december/january 02-03.He got knocked of his motorcicle.

Thats weird cus like in that time Stephan was with Vanessa. But most of those songs were writen before he met Nessa. But that song is a bit weird.I like it tho.

CHARLIZE IS A FUCKING WHORE AND SHE SHOULD DIE!

'My Hit and Run', what I believe anyway, is halfway about an actual motorcycle accident, but I think it's also about a one night stand, or something of the sort . . .

"Feel the speed through the intersection / In sheets of rain I seek out cars.'' There, I think he's talking about he feels really good about what he's doing.

''Hands in gloves grip handlbars / Ride alone to the pub in the dark.'' He's refering to a hiding spot a gloves, and his hiding spot controls where he's going. But, he's alone, remember the his break up.

''I get a little wet, but I don't have to park / And the lights start flashing green and red as I ride.'' He starts feeling kind of  bad about what he's doing, and he doesn't know if he should keep going, knowing he's gonna hurt this girl, or stop and spare her.

''A car turns left and I slide / I can't turn back / I make contact / Blinkers flash into a mosaic / Then I start flying.'' The girl keeps looking back, and won't foret the past, and Stephan sarts to feel bad bout what he's done. Then, their memories shatter, and he doesn't know what to do.

''Always, we think we get more time / Now flying through the air / Maybe living / Maybe dying / In this motor crash, it's you who comes to mind / Don't we always wish we had more time?'' They're hoping their relationship isn't going to end, but they're not sure. The motor is what kept them going, whatever that could have been, and it suddenly stopped working. They don't want to lose each other.

''I'm thrust slow mo' through time and space / Details smash and / I protect my face / And I see yours and go to a time when we just knew.'' He doesn't know what to do, so he starts sicking up for himself, when he realizes what he did was wrong, and he's the one to blame.

''Mister death in the car below / Doesn't even slow / And away he goes / In the majesty of a motor crash / You skid into my darkness forming / Sex and death, heartbreak and strife / They give me no warning.'' I think 'Mr. Death' is sex. They didn't stop having sex, and by then all feelings were gone.

CHORUS

''Here it comes / My hit and run.'' His last chance to try and say he was right so he can leave.

''Come down hard and roll to my feet / Rain washes blood now off concrete / People turn away and I just had to laugh.'' His girlfriend brings up a really good point as to why it's his fault, but he finds an excuse to why it was an accident, or something. No one wants to sick up for him, so he laughs, knowng he's going to lose this fight.

'' 'Cause I'm still flying / Living and dying.'' He doesn't know what to do, they've been on and off for a while.

CHORUS

''And I'd like to thank Mr. Death for what he's done / 'Cause I got to walk away from my hit and run / Mysteries aren't so empty now as they seemed / 'Cause I saw you at my hit and run.'' He, sarcasticly, is grateful for what sex did to their relationship. It ended. e ralizes what he did, and understands how the girl feels about it.

That's just what I think.

That seems kinda harsh, no?

And as for My Hit and Run. its about a wreck he was in.  He said as much.  You can take that and make all sorts of analogies out of it, but he said it was about an actual accident he was in.

Personally, if I were gonna take a shot at what he's trying to say, it's just that you dont realize how short life is until you think it might be over.

Ugh, once again I'd like to think Faster isn't about someone I like; "In bed she flexes her knees, to try and abate the feeling. She mouths the words please to the poster on the ceiling.'' It doesn't work for me, guys.

Faster was written before he met Vanessa.  I know this, because he was performing it on the tour where he met her.

well howdy and thanks everyone for your birthday wishes. i am in the studio as i write this producing vanessa carlton's new album. she wrties to her fans often. damm fine idea. just across the way, 3eb is finishing our ep. arion and tony and brad took the reins on most of the tracks and i love what they have done. i mean i love it. we took a long time making ootv. the ep came together so very quickly. it is currently my favorite. carnival barker and slow motion (with lyrics) are the only existing songs. the rest are new, several just instramentals. we are going to go on tour at the end of the month several of the new songs. makes me sad to hear you say we are on the down slide. radio is a nasty little creature. we are an alternative band and there is no format for us right now. so what. i love playing with these people and i am so looking forward to going out this month and playing. i am grateful as always to you all who have found so much in our band and hope i don't let you down. see you at the shows and together we will rock the back yard and the big line. cheers, Stephan

His Headstone Will Read "Doo Doo Doot Doo Doo Doo"
According to frontman Stephen Jenkins, Third Eye Blind have been busy writing and preparing for the band's next record. Jenkins says they have over 40 songs to record when the group starts work on the album next month. Jenkins wrote most of the material in the last year while in a "deep depression". While Jenkins refused to comment on the cause of the depression, an anonymous source attributed the rut to several things. "Well, for one thing, Stephen got dumped by Charlize Thieron, who is a total piece of [*****]. Then, his mortal enemies, Matchbox 20, sold like, 80 gazillion records after he badmouthed Rob Thomas all over the place. Eating a whole giant-[*****] plate of crow can make anybody depressed. Not only that, but he realizes now that his music is total triple-A craprock made to be cranked in SUVs when their sales executive fans want to "rock out" You'd be depressed, too."
---------------------------------------
how could he be in a deep depression with vanessa around?
and if he WAS in a deep depression, maybe his depression/darkness rubbed off on her

I'm still curious about Stephens relationship with Kimya Dawson (http://www.kimyadawson.com).  She was all over the new video Blinded (as was a glimpse of Vanessa) so hmmm.  It seems interesting for Stephen and Vanessa to do back ground vocals on Kimya's CD... their styles are totally different.

this is funny!

"Elektra finally dropped Third Eye Blind. Their last record sold just about nothing. His insight was that alot of people at the label wanted to see the band sink because the singer, Stephen Jenkins, was so rude. I'm sure San Francisco can't way to have him back."

this is funny!

"Elektra finally dropped Third Eye Blind. Their last record sold just about nothing. His insight was that alot of people at the label wanted to see the band sink because the singer, Stephen Jenkins, was so rude. I'm sure San Francisco can't way to have him back."

No way! Thats so not true!

In my basketball class, we can bring CD's in and play them, because we have block scheduling were we have a class for two hours, so we get music to get us in the "basketball mood" and I brought in my Third Eye Blind CD, and its really hard to find something that everyone will like and jam too.

but today, when I played it, everyone loved it. Lots of people asked me if it was my CD because the coach favors me a little and he plays mine first and I told them yeah, and who it was and all, and they said they really liked it.

I'm going to bring it in again too, it was fun playing bball and listening to TEB

I'm not sure about that, I think he left a while ago because my friend Nat she is a huge fan of third eye blind and once she was telling me about the "new guitarist" and how great he was compared to the old one and such. but I am going to ask her, she said they aren't very nice in person either.

i've seen them live twice. the first time was in 2000, on the Red Summer Sun tour with Vertical Horizon and Splender (VH rocks!!!). i wasn't really a die hard fan until that show. then my admiration blossomed into an obsession, lol.
the second time was april 2003, when they did the Within Arm's Reach tour. I paid a shitload of money to get tickets and backstage passes. The concert itself was incredible, we were RIGHT SMACK IN FRONT OF TONY (who is the MAN), and he was just totally rocking out and he is SO CUTE...
then we met the band, which was an experience all it's own... Stephan wasn't very nice to me, which was disappointing because he was like my idol (i'm a singer/songwriter). however, tony (!!!) and brad (the drummer) were totally awesome, super-nice, and they made the whole thing worthwhile. the drummer was on cloud 9, though (i think you know what i mean  ).
You should try and get out to see them (next time they go on tour-- they're a little slow in giving out the goods, cds and tours and such)!!! they're incredible!!!

My favorite is Motorcycle Driveby, with God of Wine coming after that. I really love all of their songs on the first album.

On Blue i'd have to say my favorite song is Anything, though Wounded is awesome too. And i LOVE the unedited Slow Motion. So good.

I haven't picked a favorite song on OOTV, but my fav cd by them is their first!

this is true, music videos really do help. infact, i can't ever recall seeing a video for Blinded. I think if they at least did that, they'd go far. If i remember right, when they did videos for all of their songs off of the first album, they did really well....

Post by: amberbeads on March 18, 2004, 05:26:57 am
they put out a video for blinded... it was just not really an eye-catcher, though. it was a montage of live shots and photoshoots and the band hanging out, which i guess was kind of meant for the fans they already had, b/c they're the only ones who would appreciate it. if they would've put out a "real" video with a plot and stuff it probably would've done better. blinded actually made onto the casey kasem top 40, like to number 36 or something (lol). there was no video for crystal baller, which was a total mistake, IMO. that song was incredible, and videos are another way for a song to gain exposure, and they didn't do it. part of the reason why was because their label, Elektra records, was against financing it (they're apparently having financial problems).
as for a new album in the fall, i'm hoping for it, but i wouldn't be surprised if it didn't happen. they were supposed to put out and ep this spring but it got scrapped (by elektra-- they wanted a full album, a "money maker"). at this point, i wouldn't be surprised to see the band breaking up, or at least taking a break. stephan is busy with vanessa's album, and since it's not out til june it means they still need him there, and no offense to vanessa but i'm sure she proves a worthy "distraction"... tony has a side project, a band called tight E whitey (lol) that is busy with an album and they want to tour, arion (bass) has been recording and touring with kimya dawson from the moldy peaches (she sings on "self-righteous"), and brad (drums) has a band called the soren gray rock show. so who knows what'll happen here. :(

ps. i know i provided a lot of info that might seem obvious to some, but not everyone knows the whole situation... don't think i'm assuming you're stupid :)

I thought Elektra already dumped 3EB? maybe i was hearing wrong or something, but i think it would be in 3EB's interest to leave them. If elektra doesn't want to put out a video to help their artist gain more money not only for them but for the label as well, they're not going to get anywhere.

I rediscovered Motorcycle Drive By . . . again O_o Yeah, awesomeness. It's so hard for me to play beyond "in lower Chelsea," correctly (with the picking and all) and sing. It's one of my favorite songs to play on both the drums and guitar! Woop! Look at that. But, ya know, 'I Miss You' by Blink 182 is the most awesome to play on the drums. It's easy but sounds cool so people think you're talented when reality is you're far from it. :)

I'm trying to post in everything and to stay on subject while in the process!

yeah, MDB is a toughie on guitar, basically you need to just play and sing verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry slowly, then speed it up when you begin to master what words you change chords on. it took me quite some time, but i eventually figured it out. i can't play anything on the new album, though. basically because tony is a guitar god, and i'm not.

Here's an article from the HITS Magazine "Rumor Mill" (which isn't really a rumor mill, but pretty much a precursor of things to come). This was posted this morning:

WMG ROSTER CUTS? A Los Angeles Times report says about 170 acts, or 50% of the newly consolidated Atlantic-Elektra label, now known as the Atlantic Records Group, are due to be cut from the combined roster, as Warner Music Group’s new management continues to seek out some $200 million in cost cuts. Third Eye Blind is said to be among those being dropped, while rock superstars Metallicare said to have negotiated to have their next album worked by Warner Bros. following the exit of top Elektra execs. Title: Third Eye Blind
Post by: amberbeads on May 17, 2004, 02:42:28 pm
no, no list, but third eye blind was the ONLY artist specifically mentioned in the la times. other papers have confirmed this, as well as tony himself.
this is what he had to say (posted on TVCY (http://forums.3eb.co.uk)):

Question-if you work for an employer who rightly owes you alot of money and if you quit first instead and get zilch-would you wait to be let go or quit? Elektra is long gone along with all of our friends there. We would get no appreciation at Matchbox 20's vendetta against 3eb label-and we expected this when the merger was called so this is for the best. We will decide after we finish our record weather we want to deal with another label or not. Rock.

i took that as sort-of good news. he's right, it's not the place for them anymore. but i think them not "dealing with another label" is a huge mistake. like, deadly. 8O

i'm sick of them being compared to themselves... bands evolve... 3eb has a new guitarist, which is vital to the band's sound. they're not "doot doot doot" anymore...
and as far as SCL being about meth and sex and blah blah blah, the lyrics describe an indulgent lifestyle that eventually collapses. heh the only meth reference in there is "doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break." doesn't sound like promotion to me.
jackass.

Where did you hear that :?:
The latest news I've heard (coming from reliable sources) is now that Nessa's album is done, Stephan has begun to work on some lyrics and put more time into his band.
*Just let me say I'm totally psyched about Harmonium, but I am a loyal, diehard 3eb fan at heart and it pisses me off how much time Jenkins spent on it, rather than on his own album*
Apparently, the rest of the band has come up with some pretty damn good stuff. In SJ's words: "It's so amazing that it's really mine to fuck up."
The band has begun discussions with Interscope Records regarding a contract, but we haven't heard any details.
Lastly, fans have been told that if they don't expect to hear the EP, they won't be disappointed. :?

All of which is better news than before, when I was totally fearing a break-up... I just hope they really get the ball rolling soon.
Contrats on the webmistress position, Bee :D
I'm currently working on becoming a mod at 3eb.com. Wish me luck 8O

Hey, I didn't mean to be rude, if that's how I came off. I just wanted to know, because I hadn't heard anything about that.
And the congratulations was sincere. I'm nothing but a diehard fan. I don't have a fansite or any of that cool stuff, I'm one of those invisible people. You're lucky.
But I'm sorry if I came off as snotty, I didn't mean to

I saw them last night...it was the best night of my life! I went to the Cornell University show, with Matt Nathanson opening. I'd never heard Matt's music before, but he's really really good and very funny. Think John Mayer and Howie Day.

Anyway, I got there around 5:30 and there was already a pretty long line (doors didn't open until 7). I saw some people i know from school in the front, and they were kind enough to let us cut with them :-P As soon as they let people in I booked it to the front and got a pretty good spot in front of the speakers on the right side. I had a clear shot of Stephan, and when he would come over to our side I was about 5 feet away from him!

He was so charismatic and funny on stage - the faces he made for Narcolepsy were priceless :-P They played a mixture of old and new songs. Summertown was one of them, and he also played one that he dedicated to his "friend Gwen" because he wrote a song about his sister - obviously Vanessa. It was a really good song from what i could understand, but i could really pick up what he was saying except for the chorus which went something like "let the water hold you under" or pull you under or take you under or something under :-P.

For their encore they played Motorcycle Driveby, God Of Wine, Slow Motion, and another one but i can't remember what it was. During Semi Charmed Kind of Life there were mad crowd surfers. I almost got kicked in the face by one, but thankfully my roomate caught his foot in time.

the new guitarist Tony is AMAZING. The crowd absolutely loved him. he took a pretty big solo during one of the songs, and at the end of the show came out and shook everyones hands.

so that's basically it. Stephan said that they're making a new cd, but he's been procrastinating on it.

so anyways, even though i did not get to meet Stephan (which i didn't expect to, but hey, a girl can dream :-P) I can now die happy. it really was the best concert i've ever been to!

I'm so happy for you that you got to go to Cornell!!! I went to AC (09/29) and Seton Hall (09/30). They played so fucking amazingly... Everything sounds so GREAT and the new songs blew me away. Even more than they did in May. I'm so psyched for this album. SO psyched.
If you want to download boots they're at forums.3eb.co.uk.

umm the only new one that isn't bootlegged (that i know of) so far is the one he said he wrote about Vanessa. The music for that song was much much louder than the vocals, so i couldn't really understand what Stephan was singing, just that little part of the chorus.

At this point there are 8 new songs: Summertown, In the Skin (they didn't play this at all this weekend though), Second Born, Don't Believe a Word (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), Red Star, Monotov's Private Opera, Standing Up for You and Lay Back (Let the Water Hold You)/

i'd have to read the lyrics to decide the level of romanticism. the title alone would suggest not, but water can be suggestive of fertility and mystery...and following the trend in Stephan's lyrics, he probably means something deep like that, you know?

all i know is that for the whole show in the back of my mind i was thinking how cool it would be if vanessa like, popped out from back stage and did a song with him :-P hahaha one can dream

Hi all,

First question: Who is called Ordinary Day over at 3eb.co.uk, i just wondered?

Second question: www.3ebfreak.com has a huge 3eb video section that it says is for download, there is Hard Rock Performance, Acoustic Sundance Performance and many other live performances. I cant download them or even view them on an Apple Mac. I was wondering if someone would mind trying on a PC for me??? I know this probably makes no sense but i really want to get the files onto my computer so i can convert them to mpeg and burn to DVD. If there is no way of downloading could someone please try get an email address for the fellow who runs the site? I couldn't find one anywhere. I like 3eb as much as you guys like VC so you can understand how excited i am to see these files.

I know this is a long shot but when i was on here once before there was someone who was able to capture streaming videos, if you are still he please help. You would be able to watch them via the link and record it straight to your desktop. Anyway nobody probably going to help but i will keep my fingers crossed

ps - the prize for the person who can help is a signed copy of Super Car Wash (Goo Goo Dolls album). I cant think of anything else people would want???

the boys were nothing short of AMAZING tonight! I saw them once last year, but tonight they were just soooooo good. My roomate and I arrived at 2 pm and were second in line - we were front row center and the crowd was absolutely insane! They played songs from all three albums and some new stuff as well (all their new songs are really good!) They said their album is almost finished and they wanted to go on tour to reconnect with their fans and let them know they haven't disappeared. I don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone, but they do something really cool in their show that's very unexpected!

Towards the end Stephen stood on the speakers and leaned over to the crowd and shook people's hands. My arms weren't long enough but eventually I was able to touch the tip of one of his fingers, haha. He also smiled right at me and I turned to my roomate and went "omg he just smiled at me!" I turned back around and he went "what did you just say?" so I just yelled out "I love you!" and he started laughing - I just about died :-P I never thought I would turn in to such a 12 year old groupie, hahaha.

This little mini-tour they're doing is amazing and everyone should go if they have the chance to!

house is really cool. its unlike any other nessa song i've heard. it seems alittle pop to me, but at the same time very nessa. i love it. it's one of my faves.

i didn't like my best. It didn't stand out to me. it was just a boring piano song. maybe the crowd was to loud or i was to excited to hear 3eb, but the song didn't stand out at all.

i told her to go run to their gate but if he isnt even making it to his gate on time she probably wouldn't either

I love Ursa Major! I can't stop listening to it since it came out Tuesday. It's amazing! Its so great that they are stilll doing their thing and making awesome music. This is definitely my favorite album that has come out this year!

Have any "Ursa Major" fans noticed some similar melodies from Heroes and Thieves on this album?

"Dao of St. Paul" -> "Come undone"

the opening part "This part "In this night, I need to call you but all the lines are blown.
If only you knew, how empty I feel. But maybe then you're lonely too,"

"About to Break" -> "Home"

the part after "Standing next to my fellow man" and the guitar after "it's about to break"

It's only for a few verses but I definitely hear the similarities.

Yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one that hears this. Especially the dao of st. paul one. Also, in "Bonfire" there's a bunch of lyrics I can associate with Vanessa. Like the whole campfire imagery, "some girls will break you down, just to see you come undone", "we could live like kings if we take a risk." The lyrics aren't really that big a deal, since Stephan did co-write a lot of Vanessa's songs, I just thought it was cool.
