Title: USA/CANADA
Post by: shinesobright07 on July 06, 2008, 08:25:43 pm
The difference between USA and CANADA. Compare anything you can think of, share experiences ect. Or, if you're from another country, tell what you think about Canada or USA from what you read about, hear ect.  *Any mean comments of either country will be ignored*

I'm from Canada, and I went to the US for a vacation in Florida. Some differences: Here, we measure temperature in celcius, but there it was confusing because I had to try to figure out what 81 F meant!! Also, all we could find for milk was jug milk.. and that tasted so different from the bag milk we have here.

 DISCUSS!!  :D

My Mother's family is Canadian, so it was neat growing up with food around
the kitchen that would be foreign here. Tourtière is probably what I miss the
most now my folks are in W.A; that or any of my Mom's baked pie pastry

Tourtière has been around in this form since 1611, so I guess someone got
the recipe right very early on, or it would never have become so popular

I think we do sometimes, mostly in the winter i think cause they fly south ya know? At a park that is close to me there are geese, but idk what kind they are, but they are so aggresive when u feed them bread, we have to stand on the picnic tables so we dont get malled over!

I live literally 2 minutes from the Peace Bridge into Canada.  I go to school with so many Canadians.  Half of my college is Canadian, they come here to go to what they call "Teacher's College" because Ontario only has a few.  From what I've heard  thus far, Canada, or at least Ontario and the more populated areas in the country seem to be significantly more liberal than the U.S.  We've found many differences in our education systems from discussions in class.  There are however, a great deal of similarities.  But yeah - lots of Canadians come here to shop... even though the dollar is about at par now, they always say things are cheaper here... perhaps that's because a lot of them live in Niagara Falls, not sure?

As you would in French... so [tuʀtjɛʀ] or tour-tea-air if you like. I found an
audio example at the following link, but with a very English accent   Link (http://fr.thefreedictionary.com/tourti%C3%A8re)

It's also strange that we have a one dollar coin, but you guys in the US have one dollar bills. You'd think that being so close together we'd have the same kind of money/same currency.

I'm visiting the US this summer, going to Vermont !  :D

Yes, we have one dollar coins.  Back in 1979, they released a dollar coin that was the same size as Canada's, but it was silver and reeded on the edges and easily confused for a quarter.  In 2000, they took a lesson from Canada and made the edges smooth and the color copper just like Canada's.  They haven't proven much more popular, though they are never taken for quarters.  Last year, they also borrowed an idea from the British and started minting inscriptions into the edge of the coin.

A lot of vending machines that take $5 bills will dispense $1 coins for change.

Also, in Canada, they get two more teaspoons of Coke in their 20-ounce Cokes!

LOL we get more coke =P But the worst part is that Vanessa Carlton does most of her touring and promotion in the US, and hardly any in Canada. They don't play any of her songs on the radio! One time they did play White Houses (because I requested it, though) But  no NF or HOM. Us Canadians feel so left out

I'm not sure how widespread they are.  I know Herr's is based in Pennsylvania, and they're occasionally hard to find here, but sometimes they're right on the endcap at the Fred's or Walmart.  Ax your local grocer.

I lived in Toronto for 5 years.  I miss it so much.  There is so much to do there.  There was never a day that I was bored.  Even when i was young, no driver's license and all... i could pretty much go around town because you don't really need a car to go to places.  I loved it there...it's so diverse over there cuz there's a whole lot of cultures...just awesome.

The snow still sucks though.

i think the education is different.

How is the education different? My friend just moved to Canada for college, and she says the education is different as well, but what exactly does that mean? Like different standards and stuff? Probably the history is different because it's from another place, as well as from another perspective.

hehehe.  Yes we have Canandian Geese.  I live in Western NY, they are always around even in the summer, but mostly fall time.  Americans seems to say "like" and "um" a lot.  I don't know if that is, like, an american think but it's something that we had to work on in school.  For instance, we would get docked a point or so in a speech if we said them too much.
I'm sure Canandian Health care is better.
I've only been to Niagara Falls and Toronto once when I was younger, but I get the impression that there is a lot more open space and we are more industrialized with space getting smaller and smaller!

Question: I'd like to know where people are from.  It seems like not a lot from the US...
