i ended up coming back online! so show review!

skye steele was her violinist again, and the guitarist whose name i currently cannot remember.

alexa wilkinson was great - i think she sounds much better live and acoustic - and she went first. i'm still iffy with joshua radin - last because he was headlining - and seriously, he's talented but it sounds like he wrote one song thirty different times in his "whisper rock" style. it all sounded so similar! he came down rocked out at the end though, and that was the best part about his part.

so. vanessa's setlist was something like:

1. white houses
2. hands on me
3. a thousand miles
4. who's to say
5. half a week before the winter
6. heroes & thieves
7. nolita fairytale
8. home
9. more than this

if i messed that up - someone tell me, and i'll edit.

okay. the main thing was that vanessa's voice was suffering tonight. she wasn't hitting most of the beginnings of the phrases in "white houses" (or really, any of the higher notes she has - like the vocalizations in "nolita fairytale" and "heroes & thieves" and the "home" chorus was pretty tough for her tonight) sometimes she was raspy, and sometimes her voice just plain disappeared. she kept having to drink water, and every time her voice disappeared, i winced because i felt so bad for her because she clearly wasn't feeling well.

her tour schedule is frickin' crazy. that can't be healthy at all.

the crowd was nice enough about it, but someone next to me was being kind of nasty.

but i feel she really did perform with a lot, a lot, a lot of heart. she really tried, especially with the voice thing, and i still had a great time and having a heart attack just by being 20 feet away from her. i also think it was an especially lovely rendition of "who's to say" - even with her forcing out the higher notes - and "hands on me" (i have video of both and will upload tomorrow). the friend i dragged along really loved "who's to say" and "nolita fairytale" with the drums. :]

i'm glad someone yelled out "WE LOVE YOU VANESSA" because i think she needed to hear it. (i also heard "we hate stephan!" or "we hate stevie" and i really hope it was the former because we love stevie, don't we?)

i didn't catch v going out. actually, i think alexa was the only artist who stayed. she's very nice, and she had this wacky skirt on that i loved.

anyway - i did see a couple people buying the album when i went to the merch table. the olive green sparrow t-shirts (lol it has NESSAholics on the back!) and the purple tank with the cameo image were being sold as well. i was already wearing a VC tee that i stenciled, but i bought the green one and am wearing it now. pretty comfy :]

i conclude with it was a nice night and i really do hope she feels better soon. we love you, vanessa!

 8O Really?!

Glad to hear she got some love. Cool that Skye was with her. Mark B. is  the guitar guy. Poor V. She didn't sound so great at the SJC show either.

I was there last night too.  I thought V looked great - drop-dead gorgeous as always, but also happy and seemingly in a very good mood, lots of smiles.
It was a really good setlist.  I loved when Alexa came out to play trumpet on "Half a Week".
Standing on line outside, I was right next to the stage door.  All of a sudden it opened and out came...Vanessa and Victor to go for a little walk before the show  !!   And I was right there !!
Speaking of the line outside...who was the VERY FIRST person at the front of the line ?  Our very own (and also drop-dead gorgeous  ) Nicole ("ILoveHanson" on these boards).  Now THAT'S a "Nessaholic" .  I showed her my "A Thousand Miles" ringtone
It's always just great to see the fabulously beautiful and amazingly talented Vanessa Carlton perform live.  She's the best :D  :D

Wow! I am very impressed, shocked and happy. I knew she loved us but never really thought she was crazy about that name. She probably still isn't. At the time it fit and I went with it. I can't believe it caught on and stuck all these years. And for them to get it right, NESSAholics makes me even more happy. It's my pet peeve. That and not getting it, BnN. I would love to see a picture.

And of course ILoveHanson was first. Did you expect anything less?

oh, yeah. of course, vanessa looked absolutely beautiful! how could i forget to mention that. silly me :] and v sounded a little like she was in a hurry but seemed like she was in a good mood. don't get me wrong! i was sympathizing with vanessa, but i still thought her performance - of course - was lovely.

and as for the t-shirt:

i assumed you meant a picture of the back with "NESSAholic" on it? the front looks pretty much like that - it looks like the birds are flying over your shoulder and onto the back. but yes, i'm happy to be identified as a  NESSAholic! :]

Great show. I picked up a tank and a t-shirt. I was excited to see VC merchandise :D

Who's to Say, Hands on Me were the highlights. I thought she sounded amazingly intense on these songs.  The HAWBTW duet with Alex was really cool. Home is my favorite song. It was so beautiful with the strings.

VC definitely looked a bit rushed and concentrated a lot of making sure the timing was right with her bandmates.

Someone definitely shouted "we hate Stephen" in the audience. (obviously referring to Stephen Jenkins)

This wasn't one of her better concerts if only for the fact that 1) she was an opener (seriously, why is she opening for anyone not named Stevie or some other more famous/successful artist? How famous is this Joshua guy anyway?) 2) her set was ultra-short and 3) the majority of the audience wasn't there for her - although there was a very good number of Vanessa fans in the audience, we were outnumbered by the Radin fans.

Her voice did seem strained at times and I felt bad for her. It sounded like she had trouble hitting the high notes and I think it cracked several times on her. It didn't help that it was so hot inside. The highlight for me was Home because I finally got to hear that outro live and in person. I got goosebumps. I would have preferred it if she closed her set with Home rather than More Than This.

Alexa was okay, seemed like a cool girl. I didn't bother staying for Radin's set.

I really hope she does her own headlining tour later this year because the last two concerts she did (the showcase at Bowery Ballroom and this past Thursday) have left me unsatisfied because of the short length of the gigs. Here's hoping!

Lastly, while waiting in line outside, I saw a dog that looked like Victor and then I saw this girl wearing shorts, a sleeveless top, and shades and she was looking at her phone. It took me a few seconds to realize it was her, lol. She then casually went in to the venue without anyone noticing/realizing on time it was her. Too funny.

She sang/preformed horribly. She walked onto the stage with such a somber attitude. I had a bunch of my friends with me and they kept saying that she seemed sad.  Who wants to go to a concert where the performer looks like she is about to burst out in tears?

V cracked the first note of White Houses, her opening song. The nolita bridge made the audience laugh when she couldn't sing the high notes.  Why does she write songs that she clearly can't preform live?

Half a Week was my favorite of the night.  The trumpet live was great.  The key of HAW was perfect for Vanessa- the range was low so she didn't sound like an amateur performer trying to sing a song that was clearly bigger than her.

Alexa was awesome.  She was actually BETTER than Vanessa. Her voice was record ready- her personality was bubbly and interesting.

What was up with the guitarist who kept messing up and looking confused?  The drums at the end of Nolita were off.  The violinist was great.

I can't believe she opened for Josuha Raiden. I left before he even came on.

At the end of the night, my friend told me that Vanessa should be performing at Karaoke bars- and the way that vanessa is going I'm starting to believe she's right.

at whitehouses81680 - alexa sounds better live. there's a little too much going on when she records for an album. :] i enjoyed her performance too. and i stayed for radin. joshua really is kind of boring, and he really isn't that famous. i agree that v should be opening either for stevie/someone more famous, or she should have headlined this one. i don't really get why she's on a support tour.

i don't think v's song were to blame. and i don't think her songs are "bigger" than her or what she can do. i think it's just the combination of the crazy tour schedule and just being "off" that night. we know v can perform her songs beautifully and live, like on soundstage or star lounge or the birchmere show. and i think even this not-at-her-best performance was pretty dynamic, just because it was v.

I actually prefer Alexa's studio songs rather than hearing them live if only because I tend to get bored really fast if the artist doesn't have a drummer with him/her. I do agree that she has a very strong voice live.

whitehouses81680 - that's really fucking harsh. why would you say shit like that? what if she reads it? she already feels like no one cares.

whatever, i had a great time. so she didn't hit some notes. so what. sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn't. she always gives her all, and we always get the real vanessa, happy or sad, good night or bad night, and that's good enough for me.

i gave her a note after the show letting her know how much i appreciate her. i just thought she should hear it. i'm sure she hears it all the time, but i just wanted her to know. i told her i won't see her for a while cuz i'm going on tour with hanson for 2 months, and she said "oh, you always are!" ha. i love her. i'm just sad i spent 2 shows shouting "play the one" and she still didn't. oh well. who's to say was amazing.

Well, she has to do the show, what was she going to do cancel? Sorry it wasn't a perfect show for you. She's human, makes mistakes. Maybe she wasn't feeling well, had a bad day, maybe had some bad news earlier. Who knows?

I am glad you gave it to her. I am sure she loves to hear it, especially from someone who was there from day 1. I love her too!!    And don't feel bad, I spent 7 shows and countless threads asking for PB. She always would say, sorry we didn't do PB, the boys don't know it yet. Then finally, Sept. 1, 2002 she did it for ME!! I will never forget that night in ATL!!

o-m-g, that-is-the-stupidest-and-LAMEST-thing-I-have-EVER-read-IN-my-life.
WHAT IF SHE READS IT !!!!! you are joking, right?

SO we basically can not state a TRUE fact just because it relates to our favorite singer and idol?!
we can not say that Vanessa sang badly because it makes her sad??
we can not help our idol to realize that she was bad so that she could improve later??
SO YOU LET HER BELIEVE THAT SHE IS super ALL THE TIME?

SHE ALREADY FEELS LIKE NO ONE CARES
how the hell do you know that? and EXCUSE ME, IM THE ONE WHO HAS BEEN FEELING CHEATED SINCE LAST YEAR BECAUSE VANESSA CARLTON (my fucking idol) DOESN'T GIVE A FUCKING DAMN CARE ABOUT HER FANS.

I don't know whitehouses81680 or anyone else that posted in this thread.
but all those who bashed whitehouses81680 JUST because he/she gave a damn true review, ok, lets say, his/her opinion MADE ME EXTREMELY MAD.
It wasn't like all whitehouses81680 said was "Vanessa was FUCKING BAD, Vanessa was FUCKING COLD" blah blah. He/she did praised Vanessa for some parts. and ILOVEHANSON thought that was FUCKING HARSH???!!! fuck you, ILOVEHANSON.

I know This is all the matter of OPINION. but sometimes Vanessa is OBVIOUSLY not that good, well, lets say, fucking bad and what really annoys me (FOR A LONG LONG LONG time) is some NESSAHOLICS just couldnt accept the fact and admire Vanessa as a GOD.

I swear to GOD if I ever have the chance to see Vanessa, the first thing I will say is "You have one of the most devoted and BLIND fanbase, you should be graceful and ashamed at the same time" (well, if she EVER cares about her fans anymore)

HAHA. woah. chillax dude.

she can have her own opinion of the show. i never said she couldn't. vanessa didn't hit some of the notes... i even said so myself. but saying she belongs in a kareoke bar was fucking UNCALLED FOR. and when you post shit like that on a board full of people who don't feel that way, expect that type of reaction.

and yeah, i do think she feels like no cares. she has told me before. she thanks me for coming every time... i know she appreciates her fans. and when people were shouting out requests in philly, she said "i can't believe anyone here actually knows my songs." yeah.

i don't worship the girl. i think she's amazing... but if you people think she sucks so bad, why are you even here?

Vanessa is sometimes bad but I still love her the most and that's why I'm here.

and this thread has a lot of swearing, haha

she has told me before! a group of us went to her show in millersville where she opened for lifehouse, and we were going nuts for her, screaming "you're amazing!" and stuff like that after every song. and after the show i asked her if she thought it was annoying and she said "no, thank you so much, i always feel like no one cares. after every song i wonder if i'm going to hear applause or not." or something to that affect.

can you blame the girl? clearly the people working for her don't believe in her enough. and as a group of people who DO believe in her, i think we should make her feel loved... and that doesn't include saying terrible things about her on a public message board.

sorry, i care. i don't want her to give up. it breaks my heart to know she almost gave up before stevie came along.

Now with the mod hat off, what is it that V did to make you feel so cheated, charmed23?

Personally, the way I think of artists, athletes, etc. is that even if I am a fan of them, they don't necessarily owe me anything for my fansmanship. If they are nice to me when I happen to meet them, great. If not, well that's just their perogative.

I do know from personal experience though that V does appreciate and care about her fans. She's not always overboard in showing it, but she does.

I think it's wrong that you would quote Vanessa in a situation that isn't direct with the one in question...which shouldn't be a situation at all.  Reviews.  Can go two different ways, well three...good, bad, and somewhere in between.  I don't think anyone said anything wrong, they gave a PERSONAL review...it wasn't printed in a magazine, it wasn't thrown in anyones face....It was clearly a personal review that you blew out of proportion simply because it wasn't putting Vanessa on this perfect pedistal that alot of you people put her on, which don't get me wrong...shes great.  Vanessa is an amazing performer, we've all been to AMAZING shows, and we've all been to less-amazing shows...but in the end we are all still here supporting, listening, going to the shows, buying the merch, spreading the "Vord";)....Vanessa knows who the fans are.... Just because someone typed up a mediocre review doesn't make them any less a Vanessa fan than they were before.......

...the whole thing seems like a cock fight too me.

Just love the music and hush!

yeah, i don't think saying she belongs in a kareoke bar is part of a "personal review" of the show. she's degrading vanessa's credibility as a musician/performer... and that's bullshit. it's just mean and uncalled for. it didn't have anything to do with reviewing the show... it was a personal attack. it pissed me off, and when i'm pissed off i speak my mind. i'm allowed to be pissed off. get over it. clearly whitehouses is not here to defend herself, and i'm tired of arguing about this.

Here is what whitehouses said:

Quote from: "whitehouses81680"

At the end of the night, my friend told me that Vanessa should be performing at Karaoke bars- and the way that vanessa is going I'm starting to believe she's right.

It was her friend and whitehouses81680 may soon start to believe it.

And yes, we are all entitled to our own opinions. If you read all the reviews, everyone mentioned it wasn't the best. Just let's try and remember to respect them or at least say you don't agree in a respectful way instead of all the f you's. Yeah?!

and what's up with the hate-love with O-Boards? what happened?

Going off topic here for a second but from what I read, they think Nh.com is one big old (in age) clique and that new people can't come here without being bitched out or made fun of. But they all do agree that Nh.com is the #1 source for all things V since day 1. Which is true and well, V even said she comes here to find out what she's been up to.

Back on topic,

Anyone have any luck with videos or pictures from the show?

Wow this is getting pretty heated!
I agree Let the F'you's are uncalled for.  Everyone is entitled to their review but we as fans also are entitled to defend Vanessa as well.  Poor V, looks like some of these shows are not going her way.  I feel bad for I could not attend the Nashville (my local) show to give her my support.  I am sure she can use all the support she can get right now.  I appreciate the people that are always supporting her on a continual basis and letting her know we care.
Vanessa has such tremendous talent but she is cursed with constant bad marketing and the much needed support of her label.  What a waste of talent in my opinion.....

WOW. charmed how old are you? seemed like you carry the whole world on your back just cuz vanessa doesnt msg her fans or watever. relax man! i know it SUCKS! but you have to realize that she has her own life and who knows if she has a problem or what she's having through right now.

She's been an AMAZING!!!! artist for a longgg long time and i think she has the right to failed or messed up at some point. she's only human, give her a fucking break.

Not to mention, but that's the thing i like about her... atleast she's not fake...atleast she's not trying to be somebody she's not... she's not a doll "perfect"... not trying to conform...or act like nothing's wrong...

ok we get it and of course she damn get it - she screwed some shows or whatnot from what i've heard. but i think she heard enough from a non-fan, hurtful things like - she sucks, she's horrible, and lots of bitchy things... so perhaps, its our job, as her fans (nessaholics!!!!),to LOWER the harsh tones, SUPPORT her (NOT TO PUSH HER AWAY) no matter what and still try to give her the heads up that we're here all the way CARING forever...even if it wasn't her best nights.

maybe if that happens she'd message us again.

we dont want to lose vanessa right?
as for me, i really dont...  even a hanson fan doesnt.

@fairytales: remind you that my problem in this thread was the attack towards whitehouses, not Vanessa.

I hope the part from "she's been an.." to the end in your post is not direct to me because it is completely off-topic to what I was saying.
and btw, Im 17. (going to celebrate my birthday in the US for the 1st time ^^)

shes already spoken about having an indie mind-set and plan possibly for her next "project"...it's going to take a lot more personal work on V's part if she wants her next album to be more or equally successful as H&T.   In the indie world H&T wouldn't be considered a flop....even too me, with the way the record industry has been going down and closing doors I still wouldn't consider it a major flop either.  100,000 copies isn't that bad especially for an 'artist' who is selling music not an image or sex.

A simple Myspace update, blogs and news would help Vanessa so much.  Myspace has carried indie bands(NO LABEL) to sell nearly 10,000 copies in the opening week...on myspace promotion ALONE..no tv, no radio, no media coverage..just a band with a dream...so if V is planning on going Indie shes going to have to step it up a little bit.  IMO.

IN her recored deal with murder ink, do you think they gave her more than one CD? If thats the case I think she might stick there untill shes produced enough CDs with them.

lol charmed u did attack vanessa...saying "she's fucking bad" or it annoys you that "we dont accept the fact and admire vanessa as a GOD" or watever u just said...
--so dont tell me your ONLY prob was the bash about whitehouses.--

im CONSTANtLY lurking in this forum..so i might always read your posts.. and i know how bad you feel about V.. That's why i ask your age. cuz whatever age you're in right now..or 17 right? you still need to grow up and think mature because you're idolizing...hello VANESSA!! she drinks, she curse or whatnot take drugs..ok, she's not pg13 in her shows...you get the PICTURE...point is she doesnt look like a good idol for you.. but we love her for who she is.. cuz like what i said..she's the REAL deal. That's why i'm still her devoted fan no matter what...

just patiently waiting for her post to tell us what's up... if she will, GREAT! if she wont.. don't act like a kid.

and ok the last part in my last post was probably for whitehouses... but it's also for the people who agree with her/him. so probably it's also for YOU charmed.

let's not overthink this.

Most likely worked an album-to-album deal, since shes already expressed the idea and possiblility of going indie....which means if Universal/The Inc. are willing to fund a new album it would leave it all up to V weather she wants to break away from the imprint or not.  I'm pretty happy with the way The Inc has handled the album for the most part, she did get two music videos, which was nice, did late night TV spots...all the right things were there....but I think royalty should have been speant on maybe some more TV spots(with better timing).   Cool that she has the new Khol's ad but its just off timing with the album being released in late 2007, got burried and shadowed like most late releases do with all the 'fresh' 2008 stuff.  I really think shes going to dissapear for a while, do those film scores and work on a masterpiece and self release it and self fund it.  It's not hard to run your own record label, pick a good distribution company and go with it from their...they handle a lot of the 'hard' stuff.

Vanessa if you read this(haha long shot) check out RED EYE DISTRIBUTION!

xo

ps: I wish there was a vinyl release of the album.

lol, yea, vanessa is SOMETIMES fking (gonna stop swearing :D) bad but Did I have problem with that? HELL NO fairytales.

actually Im having a peaceful arguement with you (no harsh feeling in previous post, really ) but when I read ur saying "I did attack Vanessa", I was kinda frustrated. I AM STATING A FACT, omg, please don't tell me that you have never find a bad perf. from Vanessa. and AGAIN, I dont have a problem with her bad perfo. (I swear to GOd). My only frustration and sadness is the lacking of updating fans from Vanessa. and THAT is not my point in this thread ('cause I already had a thread in the General section) .
SO my ONLY prob is the bashing whitehouses. I tell you that, again.
And since you are lurking and might always read my posts, you might realize that I have n-e-v-e-r e-v-e-r post a complaint about Vanessa drinking, cursing or taking drugs.
omg, you have to mistake me with someone else
Quote

=> Give me proofs that I said something implying that  :?
The more I read, the more I realize you thought me was someone else.

:x, what the heck!! When did I make a post saying I don't love who she is and she is fake!!!????
You made my day by saying that, fairytales, lmfao!

anyway, what is pg13? dont get that.

edit: I think now I am done with the updating fans with messages. Im done with waiting. Now I just don't care whether Vanessa post or not. If she does, Im happy. If she doesn't, dont care anymore.

You guys are funny.

1) I think Vanessa gets bronchitis a lot and I don't think the fact that her singing has become so harsh like she is trying to yell out the note as on key and stacatto as possible helps her voice.
2) I think she sings from her throat a lot, sounds like it anyway.
3) She really doesn't have the best voice to begin with, but most people that like her music like the songs she writes and the melody even more than her voice, so who cares.

She isn't a SINGER, she is a singer/songwriter and I would say more of a songwriter. I do like her voice though, I think it is cute in most cases.

i have "a thousand miles" and "heroes & thieves"? i figured you guys were all terribly bored by "a thousand miles" by now (but it's cute how everyone was singing along).

as for "heroes & thieves", honestly - vanessa's voice is really disappearing on this one. but you can hear nicole shouting "play the one", lol. and if that really was you, nicole, then i was quite close to you. :]

so if you guys want, i'll upload those too!

and i've been reading what this thread became, but i've got to say - for someone who is fairly young/new to the board, i don't feel UNwelcome. i don't think i've ever gotten anything less than polite, but i have seen the drama and i'm glad that i'm never in it :]

anyway, here's "a thousand miles" and "heroes & thieves" from irving plaza. audio, not video (but maybe that's preferable, the cam was a little unsteady for "heroes & thieves"), in mp3 format. enjoy!
