Update on the new record (and my epic dog tale!)
Dear Ones,
I took a quick break from recording to see my lil wizard man victor (beloved dog). I head back to london nxt wed to do strings. The Rabbit and it's spectrum of meaning (time slipping, mind floating) has defined these last few years. I'm calling the record "Rabbits On the Run." Speaking of running, I was attacked by a dog on Sunday. It was a young pitbull...ran off it's lawn, crossed street, chased me into the woods and bit into my leg. Nightmare in real time. A lovely couple (w 3 kids in back) stopped their car and spooked the dog away b4 he presumably got me again. Then they proceeded to let a girl (me), covered in blood and shaking like a leaf into their car and let me use their phone!!! The grand horror would have been if I had been running with victor. He would have been killed.
I love dogs. An ex-boyfriend had a pitbull and I loved her like my own for 4 years, but what do we do with the dogs like the one that got me? I don't like the idea of euthanizing young dogs. The pup is as much a victim as I am, but i think it's a ticking time bomb and it could easily maul a kid next. My dream is that Cesar Millan would take the dog in. Am I nuts to think this is a possibility? If no, then this dog is en route to a shelter where it will fail an aggression test and then be put down.
I swear my next tweet will be back to hobbits and music. swear.

It sounds like she's nearly finished. You usually do the strings and stuff towards the end of a project.

I like the new title she came up with, though I also think that the 'Tall Tales for...' is better. But hey, maybe she got something meaningful why she chose to have that title for her new record. Besides, maybe her track list seems to suit the title record. Let's just trust V. ;)

Agreed. That is, she would change the name if she feels like publicizing herself and getting more fans. For some reason, I get the feeling that she knows who her fanbase is, and she is more interested in keeping them interested instead of keeping a looser sort of group and entertaining the general public. I'm guessing she figures that a symbolic title would intrigue others... but seeing that the music industry is predominantly superficial, I doubt they would even care. The meaning behind it is still somewhat engrossing; although, I still prefer Tall Tales for Spring rather than Rabbits on the Run - unless if she is trying to build her bridges with Disney.

I would NEVER expect Vanessa to call a song "Moneymaker", that doesn't sound like her AT ALL.

I wouldn't worry about the "Moneymaker" title, it honestly sounds to me like one of those titles that's going to change. Remember how Ordinary Day was initially called Divide & Conquer?
And even if that isn't the case, I really don't think we need to worry about Vanessa going into bizarre territory like hip-hop. She said long ago she would never do that.

I think when she says 'Cracked' she means she has finally decided which song will be last. Like you cracked the code (you've finally figured it out).

Hey Michelles CD was released as a 6 song ep..i got mine in the mail yesterday. You can order it on MichelleBranch.com for 6 bucks with 3 dollar shipping ot order from Amazon/iTunes on Sept 14th..your choice. Sucks that they cut it down to 6 songs...I guess shes planning on releasing a full length album in December called Different Kind of Country.

BNN and H&T were both released in hard copy over here in Australia too..I'm not sure if Harmonium ever was though..never saw it on the shelves. But like Lyris said, if it's not available, I'd ship it over :D Oh the wonders of today's world xD I'm not a big fan of buying music digitally, just cause I like to have the physical copy..though it sucks that Harmonium isn't even on iTunes :(
"Harmonium" was never released in Europe (I live in Switzerland). I was a huge Vanessa fan and was waiting impatiently for Harmonium to be released back in the summer of 2004 then in november I went to the store and didn't see the album so I kinda forgot about Vanessa (I was 15 and didn't buy stuff on the internet) and then on february of 2005 I was in a really bad place in my life, my best friend almost died and was spending months which in the hospital, etc and I found by complete chance an Harmonium copy in a CD store (apparently someone ordered it then never came back to buy it) - it was su f-ing expensive but that was the first real album that I lived, and loved cause it was a part of me...It saved my life. Hmm, kinda random, but I really hope "Rabbits" will be another life-changing album just like "Harmonium" !

They only have "White Houses" and "San Francisco" (cause it was on a Charmed album xD) on our iTunes..
I still haven't caved in to listening to V's new songs - my fave part of getting a new album is listening to it for the first time and getting first impressions, while flipping through the CD's booklet :D I want all the songs to be completely new when I hear them..then I'll go back and listen to those acoustic ones ;)

I could see "Bride" being a hit in another time.
I think, depending on its production & promotion, that the song could even make an appearance on the BB chart. It fits the typical pop structure and sounds like something radio would be interested in.

That's what I thought when I first heard it. I could really envision hearing it on the radio, as it does sound like something they might play. 'Fair-Weather Friends' is another good one, as is 'Carousel' - though I don't see 'Tall Tales for Spring' garnering as much positive feedback with the mainstream crowd.

I don't know about you guys, but for me I like the live versions of "I Don't Wanna Be A Bride" "Carousel" "Tall Tales For Spring" "London" "Fair-Weather Friends" just the way they are. I kind of hope that she doesn't add a lot of drums or anything on the studio versions. I think that would kind of ruin them for me. That's what happened with "Heroes & Thieves" for me. There's an acoustic version out there on YouTube, and I really liked that version, and then when the album version came out, she added a lot of strings and drums, and, I don't know, but they just kind of took something away from the song, in my opinion. "Tall Tales For Spring" sounded great as "Waltz" with just the piano and violin too.
I've never heard of the song "Wave Good-Bye" either. Is there a recordning some where?

I have never even given LL a chance really..I don't want to feed into her hype and contribute to her drug habit. Generally, if I hear something I like, I research the artist a little then usually get stuck on that person/group for months. I rarely listen to the radio! I have to say I'm pretty offended that just because someone is also a fan of Britney etc., there is the assumption that it somehow decreases the value of someone as a Vanessa fan, or the fan base in general, and provokes a reaction like "what the fuck has happened to Vanessa fans", simply because they enjoy someone different from Vanessa. I'm new here, and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot because I'd like to enjoy the coming of the new album on here with everyone, but I just found those two comments really insulting. Listening to and enjoying Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus or Ashlee Simpson or Katy Perry (or anyone else that doesn't fall into the "right" style/genre to pass the musical taste test around here) in no way compromises my ability to appreciate Vanessa and count her as one of my favorite artists, and it's an ignorant and narrow mindset to have if you feel like you can only enjoy one kind of artist or music.
I'm listening to IDWTBAB and Carousel more frequently than the other songs. I would be listening over and over again to Fair-Weather Friends if there's just a clean version.
And I agree with the polished versions of the songs. They tend to sound so different from live versions.
I am really looking forward for this record. It's my first time to witness an actual release of V's record.

I SO agree with you! I think it's so cool and exciting to hear Vanessa's studio versions because they always sound so fresh after listening to live acoustic versions for so long.

I understand they may want to save it as a surprise or it might not be the final version, but these things happen all the time and it's actually a GOOD thing. At least they're "trying to make the release as successful as possible". Realistically, whether we agree or disagree with the viewpoint of Vanessa's management, the track list for the album is currently a copyrighted property and therefore until it is released for public consumption we're just abiding by their wishes. They requested the thread be taken down, it was verified the request came from the management team and their request was fulfilled.
The music industry as a whole seems to be getting very vigilant regarding any leaks of music or information these days, which is unfortunate as fans can use that material as marketing tools for an artist, but again, it is what it is. Keep in mind this directive comes from the management team and not necessarily V herself, it's just one of those administrative things. The attack wasn't on the board or any members here, but an inquiry to find out who leaked the information.
I know it is exciting to talk about new music and to speculate, but sometimes we just have to play ball for a while. Considering how long we've waited, I think we can wait a little longer, right? :)
That sucks that the tracklisting was taken down, but I see some positive though. The label cares enough that the tracklisting is on the internet enough to a point to ask to have it taken down. Even if it's a copyright thing, it symbolizes that they care much for Vanessa's fourth album and would like it to be a success.

I agree - whenever I'm in a CD store I always check if they have any of the albums, just cos I love seeing copies sitting there! I see BNN quite a lot, but have never seen Harmonium or H&T.
I really hope the album comes out on both CD and vinyl. I collect vinyls from my favourite artists, and it'd be really nice to add a second one to my VC vinyls (the White Houses one is getting very loney...). I know Vanessa said on Twitter something about printing to vinyl and loving "those little black circles" or something. So I really really hope it happens!

Vanessa Carlton is to release her fourth album Rabbits on the Run independently, with a date stated as "coming soon".
The 'A Thousand Miles' singer has been working on her new album over the last few years since splitting with former labels The Inc/Universal Motown.
"To be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to do another record," she said in a video clip posted on The Prophet Blog.
"I had to re-investigate my entire process. I basically had to change my approach to how I make music.
"Once I wrote the first song for the record I realised that this was the type of record I would have to do completely on my own. I left my label and it became a completely self-financed, independent project."
Carlton's last LP Heroes & Thieves peaked at number 44 on the US Billboard 200.

Yes I totally agree with you. This is a song I need to hear the studio version of before I die, just like "All Is Well" and the thing she sung on the Irv Gotti show. I hope she will do something like Michelle Branch and give away those songs. But if she has to pay or re-record them... it's less likely:(

Well there's definitely a studio version. My guess is it's hidden in the Universal vaults and I doubt it'll ever get to see the light of day. :(

I also read somewhere that she was part native-american, but with so many people claiming to "have some indian in them" and "my great-grandma was a Cherokee Indian Princess" (despite the fact that Cherokees didn't have Indian princesses), I don't really know if that's true or not.

That was so funny and interesting to read since we're now in the "future" :) At some point she writes about listening to My Morning Jacket, how amazing :) Funny cause every album (well maybe not the first one) she does exactly what she wants and I think that deserves a lot of respect as she's in the music industry. I would LOVE more songs, but I would also enjoy acoustic versions of songs already on the album because that's the way I like my Vanessa Carlton, stripped down, raw, acoustic. To do a making-of video, she would've needed to record it while making the album, so unless she has more footage (in addition to the video we already got), she's recording something else. I just can't wrap my mind around going to the Razor & Tie studio to recording "making-of" footage when the album is already recorded. ???

I hear you on it being a bit plain; I would have liked to have seen more of her caligraphy. I like seeing everything too and like I posted before, I think it means they are working on getting the website up and running. Plus, they might be reaching old fans who haven't been keeping up with Vanessa but signed up for a mailing list way back when. It was smart to send an email out from the website. I'm loving razor and ties support and promotion of her thus far.

Yeah! really weird!! I've grown with her music as well, and that was when I was like 13, now I am 22. :o
I hope they're for digital extras. I don't like bonus tracks tagged on to the physical cd, it takes a way from the body of work that is the album, you know? Makes it less of a cohesive unit than the record was intended. A bonus disc at her online merch store or something might be cool.
I asked razor and tie about how tr extra tracks are going to be released, either digitally or on another cd, and they tweeted me back this:

So maybe they might decide to put them into another acoustic cd ;D rather than iTunes which I'm not a great fan of...

As for the album art and the album itself: I just hope it's everything she wanted and expected it to be. If she is happy then I am happy. I will love the art and the music because it came from her and such a pure place. I don't think there has ever been anything I didn't like of hers. I don't think it's very smart to not play any shows in the midwest.
“You’ve got a knife-throwing kind of love,” Vanessa Carlton sings on “London,” the third track off her fourth studio album Rabbits on The Run, which is due out June 21st on Razor & Tie. And it’s immediately clear on this album that Carlton’s not afraid to throw a few knives herself. Cutting to the bone, these ten razor-sharp diary entries bring Carlton right back to where she was on 2002’s Be Not Nobody.
In the ensuing nine years she has fallen by the wayside of the pop music world, wrongly relegated to the “one-hit wonder” label. But Vanessa Carlton is one of those songwriters who was never over-reliant on hooks to find success, and though three-year waits between albums have not been kind to her fanbase, those who have stuck around are going to be pleased with the result of the time taken to hone her craft. Though these songs, including single-candidate “Carousel,” don’t have the sound pop radio thrives on these days, as a whole the album plays well, Carlton’s music not sounding nearly as dated as one might expect.
As a result, Rabbits on the Run doesn’t have any real sense of immediacy, but that means the album’s less likely to live or die on first-week sales. There’s a sense that this is music meant to be savored, enjoyed in repeat listens as a full meal rather than just tantalizing single-serving appetizers. And Carlton has survived where her early ‘00s contemporaries have failed. Willing to write and record without guaranteed radio success to buoy her career, Vanessa Carlton has managed to bring the unexpected, while the likes of Anna Nalick still have yet to attempt a follow-up.
This isn’t music you’re going to hold up ten years from now and say “this is what makes pop music!” But Vanessa Carlton proves with Rabbits on the Run that, for a songwriter, what you need to do is make good music. If the music itself holds water, the rest takes care of itself. In this age of corporate radio and failing record labels, more artists could stand to take a lesson from that. And music fans willing to take a step off the beaten path should find plenty to enjoy about this album as well.

This sounds weird to say, but those don't really sound like V titled songs....But I could be terribly wrong. I'm hoping I am. I'm hoping for once wikipedia for some odd reason is correct!
I dot really believe the two tracks are real. They don't sound very Vanessa. And, didn't we hear that the bonus tracks were just gonna be diffirent versions of the album songs??I agree that those titles don't really sound like Vanessa.

I checked BMI, and neither of them was listed. I don't think they're real.
I'd like if they were real though..I'd love some bonus tracks :) We'll just have to wait and see.

"Dance Tonight" actually reminds me of "Moneymaker" in some way. Hmm...Maybe the song's about strippers :P
Yeah whatever happened to that song?? Moneymaker...if she said it was always going to be 10 songs....wouldn't that one be one of them? Maybe she changed the title..I still can't even imagine her saying the work "moneymaker" in a song, let alone having a song titled it.

Vanessa's meeting up with Beatweek Magazine (100% digital magazine) tomorrow to do an interview which will be available in late June. The editor heard the album so of course I asked him what his favourite song was ("Carousel" and "Dear California" which he described as fun). I hinted at a bit more info but he's reluctant. Oh well - only a few more weeks left.
