Title: Carousel
Post by: LauraH on October 10, 2010, 05:41:17 pm
This is probably my favorite of all of her new songs. It's so beautiful.

Could someone please try to make out the lyrics?

I have some of them I think, but I need help. (:

For all you broken hearted ??
Go find another one
Cuz you know time will ?bring another day?
White rabbits on the run

It's hard to know what's good for you
I know she let you down
But when the fever breaks when it's too much to take
so you can put your weapons down

And all you'll hear is music
and beauty stands before you
and love comes back around again
it's a carousel my friend

It's never too late to change the pace
The days creep up on you
But the goodness to somethin' you don't have to chase
cuz it's following you

and all you'll hear is music
and beauty stands before you
and love comes back around again
it's a carousel my friend

I could not really understand the bridge so...lol
And the ending is something like

Time awaits so don't be late
white rabbits on the run

You did a great job with the lyrics!  The only help I have is with the first line:

For all you broken hearted lovers lost

Sorry I can't be of more help - I'm as lost as you with the bridge haha

Album version lyrics (also posted on page 11 of this thread):
------

For all you broken hearted lovers lost
Go find another one
'Cause you know time won't wait and you'll be late
White rabbits on the run

It's hard to know what's good for you
I know she let you down
But the fever breaks when it's too much to take
So you can put your weapons down

And all you'll hear is the music
And beauty stands before you
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

Never too late to change the pace
Oh how the days creep up on you
But the goodness is something you don't have to chase
'Cause it's following you

And all you'll hear is the music
And beauty stands before you
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

oo, Oo, oo, Oo, oo, Oo, oo, Oo

I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
Under

Oo
And all I hear is the music
And beauty stands before me
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

It's in the music
And beauty stands before you
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, a carousel
It's a carousel, my friend, oo

Time won't wait, so don't be late
White rabbits on the run

I tried my best, I agree some part were hard and may not be 100% correct, but for the most part I think I did well.

after typing these out
and listening like the 3rd time and understanding what she was saying...
wow.
not gonna lie, I cried.

she always has a way of getting to me, some way...
because I can always find a way to relate.
:(

edit:
anyone else getting that "Cyndi Lauper - True Colors" feel from this song?
I donno why but even after the first listen, I was reminded of that song.

hmm. :)

Thanks for the lyrics, Kulp. They are ACCURATE. (:

And "Carousel" is just awesome. In my opinion, it is somehow a mix of IDWTBAB and Fools Like Me, musically speaking. But the lyrics, they are just.. MAGNIFICENT. V just reminded why I have been a fan of hers.rrrrrrrrrr

The lyrics sound spot on to me! Thanks Kulp!

I can definitely hear a bit of a "True Colors" vibe to this song too.

This song is so beautiful, I'm kinda speechless and choked up right now. I really, really love it.

This song has high potential to be a great single.

It'll have to break my Bride record. I mean I listened to Bride when it was first recorded sooooo much that its still in the top in my most played playlist which makes me wonder how many times I've listened to that song.

Does anyone else imagine a merry go round in like really slo mo in black and white and just really happy memories from a time when things weren't so complicated...

One thing for sure though, whenever I listen to the song... I feel like I'm being hugged by someone really special.

I really don't get the line "white rabbits on the run" in this song. What is it a metaphor for??  It just sounds so abrupt after the lines "Cause you know time will break and you'll be late" and "And time won't wait, so don't be late".

It is metaphorical. V mentioned before that rabbits symbolize "time slipping" and "mind floating" for her. And remember the White Rabbit on a hurry from Alice in Wonderland? Guess she got the inspiration from there.

So I have been extremely busy with work and school and I never really payed attention to this song. Today I decided to sit down and finally listen to the song. Anytime I listen to a new V song I have to hear it more than once. I have to hear it in total silence. Nothing but the song in the background. I listen to the music, then her lyrics, how they coexist, what the song means, etc. I love this song. I cried. I am willing to admit I have cried to  Vanessa songs but I have never cried initially like I have with this song. Its just so beautiful. It is now my favorite Vanessa song.

I hear under as well, but can make unearthed work.  I SWEAR I hear an 'ack' sound where people hear 'thunder' !  But then again my husband says I can't hear very well.. LOL!~
side note, I just figure out I can post while I'm at work! Very excited about that.

found this article about Nicole Kidman's new movie called "Rabbit Hole" and I think they should use Carousel as the theme song!  The movie sounds depressing but seems to have undertones of hope and I feel that her song would work!  It would be awesome promotion and from what I can tell sounds like a good movie.

yeah when i typed that, that whole part is the most iffy part of the whole song, not really positive on what she's saying..

i sorta just molded what i thought she said together for that line..
I'm almost sure she says
"I thought I heard your voice in the thunder"

it's the line after that that I'm really unsure of, although I'm almost sure she says "never"
--and I agree with you, it does sound like she's saying "under" BUT, the alternatives for "under" make no sense at all.
like "never under" "ever under".. i just don't get.. but if you listen closely, you can hear the faint "thed" sound after "under" (especially the first time she says it) which drives me more positively towards "unearthed" especially because "never unearthed" makes sense.
although, sadly I'm not sure what would make sense before "never unearthed"
I swear I hear "spells" and definitely a word that ends with "-ing"
so I tried my best to make lines that sound almost exactly like what she's saying, and make sure that they make at least a little bit of sense.

She may or may not be saying the exact same thing the first and 2nd times she says it...
probably is the same thing.. although it sounds slightly different the 2nd time than the first.

ok, so here is me analyzing this even more... line by line in order..
(first one)
I tried to think ... what can you do with "spells" .. well it sorta  sounds like "testing" to be honest ..well if you take the 2nd "T" sound in "testing" .."casting" is also a possibility, which would make sense, something you can do with a spell... cast it. as odd as it sounds in this song, but then again, it's sort of magical itself, now isn't it?

ok so... next word.. sounds like "on"
casting on... hmmm... maybe "all" ? "long" ? ..ok upon more listens, definitely probably not "all" ..really sounds like "long" here. because I hear "ong" and the "l-" sound is short and quick anyway.
casting long, testing long.. next word...
"distant" ? "distance" ? ..testing long distant spells never unearthed. actually i'm pretty sure this is distant rather than distance. (she's probably saying the same thing in the next line which is where i probably heard 'dancing' from)

alright well, let's analyze the 2nd time now...
the first word sounds different, yet the same as last time..
sounds like "antsy" actually. "and she" .. "-ancing" I just transformed it into "dancing" which I now realize is completely wrong.
"and she yelled distant spells never unearthed" is my best guess for now for this line, but I can't help but think it could be the exact same as the first time she said it....
it still could be "casting long distant spells never unearthed"
but wait, let's go back a little..
still 2nd time here..
sounds like "and she y'all" I don't think it's "yelled" because the word ends with an "all" sound (see my original lyrical thought)
could this be "long" again?? maybe it is, maybe Vanessa just slurred it a little.. I mean, she is kinda singing this part fast.. it is possible... but I REALLY don't hear the "g" ending to "long" it really ends with "all"

"and she all --?-- spells never unearthed"
it honestly doesn't sound like "distant" this time.. vaguely like "dancing" but I hear an "a" sound in it. like "daa_ss_omm" almost like "did some". or "dan some" but not really "some" like "sin.. in" .. "dancin" ?
I donno, if I had to give it lyrics for now I would say
"and she yelled distant spells never unearthed"

bleh! I can't wait to hear another recording of this.

WHOA!  Holy words batman.
I like the idea of casting spells never unearthed because it IS very magical :)  You have done a lot of work and thinking and I hope I didn't offend you when I said I didn't hear 'thunder' that's just ME.
I finally have a night off work tomorrow (thursday night) so I think I am going to sit down and see what I can figure out (you've inspired me with all your hard work). No cleaning or anything else but Vanessa and Carousel.
We do desperately need a clean, stuido version (hopefully without too much else added to the song because I love the stripped, raw sound of just her and the piano..or piano and violin or guitar.)

Absoultely! Although, if she used the same principal as she did in Home, it could be really beautiful too.  You know, the build up of extra instrumentals.  or minimal other musicians.  I will still love it either way!

qucik reply while I'm at work:
the first line I hear an 'ack' sound, and I feel like it's "back"
the second time she sings 'thought I heard  your voice..." sounds more like thunder than the first time.
I have yet to really sit down and listen but a preliminary guess at the first line is something like
"thought I heard you're voice, when you comin back" (this obviously could be totally off the mark, and I may get a lot of flack for it, but I'm prepared! Like I said, I still havn't really sat down and analyzed it, just listening in the car  ;)

new lyrics

-------------------

For all you broken hearted lovers lost
Go find another one
'Cause you know time will wait and you'll be late
White rabbits on the run

It's hard to know what's good for you
I know she let you down
But the fever breaks when it's too much to take
So you can put your weapons down

And all you'll hear is the music
And beauty stands before you
Love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

Never too late to change the pace
The way the days creep up on you
But the goodness is something I don't have to chase
'Cause it's following you

And all you'll hear is the music
And beauty stands before you
Love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

Oo, oo, Oo, oo, Oo, oo, Oo

I thought I heard your voice when you found her
And she yelled guess who spells that were under
I thought I heard your voice when you found her
And she yelled guess who spells that were under
Under her

Oo
And all you'll hear is the music
And beauty stands before me
Love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

Until you hear the music
And beauty stands before you
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, a carousel
It's a carousel, my friend

And time won't wait, so don't be late
White rabbits on the run

On the studio version, could those backing vocals be that of the choir we she is supposed to have?

her guitarist, Ari.

Through out the day I thought I had an epiphany that its not owl but rabbits.

I though I heard your voice in the thunder,
Is the rabbit casting spells that we're under?

But its definitely a an hour/owl rhymey kinda word. I checked up with Watership Down maybe if there was an owl casting spells. But meh... now that the website's got that fancy video... This is just amateur discussion ;-)

yes, I FINALLY hear thunder. lol.  I think hour makes more sense than owl but I totally hear owl.  On second thought, owl would make sense too because of the rabbit theme and they are kind of mystical night creatures.. I don't know if they are in watership down.  I looked up owls and some can eat animals as large as themselves, some have been known to eat domestic dogs, so I don't think eating a rabbit is out of the question.

if you listen to the older recordings, especially the Western Carolina University recording, it kind of does sound like "hour" the first time she says it.

however, upon several listens, I think it's just the way she pronounced it ow-wuull

I've been leaning more towards it being owl both times she says it -- for all 3 performances that we have recorded of this song.

I was thinking about words yesterday.  I often times mess up my words when I speak.  Sometimes I say the wrong thing, even though I'm thinking the right thing.  Or I will combine two words together.  Or I will say them with a southern accent (not on purpose). My husband will often make fun of me for this.  But I bring it up because, I wonder if anyone else has this problem or quirk (or if I am just that messed up).  If so, maybe Vanessa is one of these people and so it stands to reason that each time she sings a song, a word or two might be mixed up or sung wrong or she decides to change it.  Especially with live performances, it makes sesne that words might be a little different each time or that an inflection is different each time and therefore sounds different to us.  Just a thought on words, and maybe we shouldn't get too hung up on what was sung or not sung..

I get this too. Sometimes, when I'm thinking ahead and talking at the same time, I'll get mixed up and mess up eventhough I know exactly what I meant to say. Also when im nervous this happens. Maybe Vanessa is like that too. I mean, I imagine she is quite nervous up there. Besides, one or two words in this context don't change the song or it's meaning. :)

I think she says "It's in the music" on the last chorus??

yeah, definetly it's not "until". i said it was "it's in" but... yeah haha

I heard that too!!

I always thought it was and didn't realize others thought it wasn't (I guess I didn't read the thread closely). I didn't bother disputing the fact though, I know my hearing is not always on point.

I've listened to the studio version so many times now, and I think it's funny that after 121 listens, I finally took notice that there's some light background whistling going on over the Oooo Oooooo's and around the 'I thought I heard your voice in the thunder' part

interesting.  ;D

I always felt it was a metaphor for life/life cycle and karma in a way.  Everything in life will come back around.  You'll have love, then loss and sadness, but you will find love again whether it's in another person, or learning to love yourself.  that's just my initial feeling of the song.

lol I don't think she can make it any more obvious..

"it's a carousel"
all I hear is the music
beauty stands before me
love comes back around again.

carousels are beautiful, spin and play music. simple.

...the metaphor is your love life. or just your life in general in regards to "all you broken-hearted lovers lost"

THis is definitely what it means to me too! The line "love comes back around again" is very powerful for me! It's amazing how Vanessa's lyrics connect with you at different times in your life! <3

IN MY OPINION

When you ride a carousel you get on a horse! (most of them are horses aren't they!??!)
Then the ride its over  :'(
Then you can get on it again and ride another one!  ;D
and just enjoy the trip!

So, during the trip I found love, but now it's over. I dont know where the next horse (chapter) is gonna take me  :D
It's like the circle of 'life'  It keeps going!

Hmm. In the "owl" part, I hear either "owl" or "HOUR", which makes more sense with the song.. "It's the hour casting spells that we're under."

I hear (and have always heard), "Is the owl casting spells that we're under?" The "voice in the thunder" part makes me believe that she can't quite believe what she's hearing (a voice in the thunder), so she's asking has the owl cast a spell to make her hear that voice.

But why an owl? O: She references time earlier in the song, so I thought hour fit better. xD; Then again, with the children's choir and their catchy ooh moaning, it could represent an owl? xD

I think we also have to keep in mind some of her influences for the album which in includes Watership down.  I have never read it but others have and they say it's about a rabbit society.  So going with that theme I can guess there may be an owl in the book (is there?) Even if there isn't the owl feeds on rabbits, so for the rabbits not to get eaten they have to be back 'home' on time, if they are late they might be eaten!  Can't you just picture rabbits running from owls?

I read it as soon as I heard it was an inspiration to this album. It's really good and I recommend it to everyone. There's Watership Down and then there's Tales From Watership Down. There are different colored covers for Watership Down though. As for the owl and hour thing, I think she said owl. It would just make more sence to me to say owl

album version:

For all you broken hearted lovers lost
Go find another one
'Cause you know time won't wait and you'll be late
White rabbits on the run

It's hard to know what's good for you
I know she let you down
But the fever breaks when it's too much to take
So you can put your weapons down

And all you'll hear is the music
And beauty stands before you
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

Never too late to change the pace
Oh how the days creep up on you
But the goodness is something you don't have to chase
'Cause it's following you

And all you'll hear is the music
And beauty stands before you
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

oo, Oo, oo, Oo, oo, Oo, oo, Oo

I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
I thought I heard your voice in the thunder
Is the owl casting spells that we're under?
Under

Oo
And all I hear is the music
And beauty stands before me
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, my friend

It's in the music
And beauty stands before you
And love comes back around again
It's a carousel, a carousel
It's a carousel, my friend, oo

Time won't wait, so don't be late
White rabbits on the run

Ok, so this could be the delirium talking because I haven't slept, but I have new thoughts on these lyrics.  I always thought of this as her singing to someone else, someone external.  But I thought just now, and especially with the video -- is she talking to herself?  what I mean is that is seems like she is telling herself all these things --that it's not too late to change the pace, that love will come back to her, and that beauty surrounds her and is inside of her.   The lyric "I know she let you down" still works, one because she is bisexual, and two, she could still be talking about herself -- her old self, that she who got off track and was letting herself down.  The song has taken on a new meaning for me of self affirmation or self lullaby to reassure herself that it will all be ok and that love will come back to her as long as she keeps putting it out there and as long as she keeps recognizing the beauty around and inside of her.
during the last part of the song where she interchanges "I" instead of "you" ("all I hear is the music")  seems to affirm all that she was telling herself during the song.

This probably won't make sense.. sorry for rambling.!

I was listening to the live version from Kean university and I heard something I never heard before -- a clap clap in the "oo oo oo" at the beginning of the bridge! I had never heard it before.  I don't know if it's just a coincidence like someone moving their chair, but there is clearly some sort of clap clap during that part. I couldn't believe it as I had never noticed it before! (and I hear it really well the first time, and not so well the second)  Has anyone else heard this before now?  I thought the claps were something new but apparently it was in her head the whole time.

I was also thinking about the bridge a little more and I like how she repeats it more in the album version -- it reminds me of chanting, which fits really well with the whole spells theme and the campfire/night scene in the video.  This song and video are becoming like a religious experience for me.  Very spiritual and inspiring.

Lol! I get really annoyed/offended whenever I play a V song for a friend and they don't like it. I have one friend that can be considered somewhat of a Vanessa fan, although she's more into V's ~mainstream~ tracks, like 'A Thousand Miles' and 'Nolita Fairytale'. Anyway, I called her up when I saw the Soundcloud account with the snippets from RotR and made her listen to all the tracks, one by one. She was really unimpressed and complained about the 'low and cheap quality' of the audio. I had to explain the whole analog thing to her. I got so angry! I know I shouldn't, and to each his own, I guess...but I can't help but shove Vanessa and her music down my friends and family's throats. I want them to comprehend the complete and utter amazingness (not a word, I know. Whatever.) that is Vanessa Carlton and her music.  :'(
