I saw some discussion about a possible music video in yesterdays show topic....since I found some info a couple days ago on Twitter regarding the Pre-Production of the video, thought I'd share:

OMG this is great. I can't believe it's finally all happening. The wait is almost over!

I think that there should obviously be a carousel, maybe open and close with one, but it shouldn't be the main focus. I also think that the rabbits shouldn't be in your face, just kind of a side thing, kind of hidden. I like videos that make you think, and aren't just someone sitting there singing into the camera, so hopefully there is more of a story line to watch. We'll see!

Carousel's a good single choice. Without having heard the studio arrangement it is hard to say what kind of popular appeal it will have on that end, but the song itself has a feel people can get behind.

Maybe multiple ones... Cos the song is SUPER feel good... Just thinking ;-)

I just want her and a piano -- it's kind of her thing. C: She's done it in most of her videos, and I feel like taking that and replacing it with a carousel would be a step backwards for her.

I agree on the cheese factor. This is how I picture it, hope you can catch my drift, I'm not good at explaining things:
before the music starts the camera is zoomed in a moving carousel so that it looks just like a blur, camera pans out and there is the carousel (still moving). the music starts and it cuts to a couple breaking up. the song than follows either the boy or the girl, (or girl girl, boy boy, whatever) as they go through more relationships and either find each other again, or find true love in someone else. Maybe one of the people is in a park and sees a rabbit briefly, then ends back at the carnival/carousel.
this is just my preliminary idea. I think I'd have to dwell on it a little more to come up with anything else! It's just what I think I would enjoy seeing, not necessarily what I think she would or would not do.

I agree with what sarab said about the music video. The way I envision Carousel is, these two people first meet each other at a carnival and find an attraction to each other. The both hit it off and have a wonderful time together. But as time passes, they go on with their lives, marrying other people but still had that thought of that one person they felt a connection with. Later on, they discover each other again at the same carnival where they first met. They both realize that they made a mistake and end up spending the rest of their lives together.
And somewhere in there white rabbits on the run will fit in there. =)

Ow she should get Julia Stiles in the video... They're apparently really good friends? I mean a mainstream actor could get people to stop and at least try to pay attention to the song that doesn't sound all electronically enhanced as is the style these days... you know?

You're right, she really doesn't do that..hmm..something to think about. Like I said, it was something I'd like to see, not necessarily what I expect from her.

YESSSSS! I hope Vanessa gets all the promotion she can for her CD and new videos. She totally deserves it. She's not like those singers you hear about ALL the time in Hollywood and I love her for that :).

I say, I rather like the idea of an abandoned carousel that Nessa stumbles upon in a field somewhere. And when she touches it, it lights up. Ooh, the video can be at night, too, making the carousel lights glow. Or maybe Vanessa can be in a small cottage and looks out of the window at night and sees the glow of the lit carousel in the woods. And she travels through the woods and finds it...and also finds the ghost of her lover there riding it. I dunno, I'm a writer by profession, so naturally I have a million ideas for a project that's not even mine. :D :D :) :)

I also liked the idea! I'd love the contrast between the night sky and the colors in the carousel. I hope it'd look like my siggy in one way. (:
And about the rabbits, I hope it won't be overdone. Having a lot exposure of the rabbits, if not done with utmost creative care, can turn into cheesy pun. But I have a lot of trust to Vanessa and her team's creativity.

Well, the album title is supposed to be inspired by Watership Down, so Alice would be contradictory in a way. I like the idea of Victor as the Chesire cat (would they paint him purple?), but the thought of Nessa wearing that cheesy dress isn't doing so great in my mind's eye. As long as she doesn't wear that dress, it'd be a good idea. But, we must also take the budget into consideration. Nessa isn't sitting on a mountain of dough, and I doubt Razor & Tie has Tim Burton money to make a video like that.

An Alice in Wonderland-inspired video would be cool. The title Rabbits on the run reminds me of that.

i think it'll just be something pretty simple & basic but artsy. i can't see vanessa being too literal with the video. she's never really been literal (no white houses in "white houses", no record contract being taken away in "nolita fairytale", no crossing of oceans in "hands on me", etc).
i think whatever the outcome, it will be artsy and totally vanessa. i'm excited.

She is not one for story lines, more abstract. I thought Alice in WOnderland the first time I heard the album was going to be Rabbits on the Run especially because Tim Burtons had just come out around that time. But she said it was Watership Down rabbits that inspired her, so I totally through all any conceptual ideas based on Alice. (and Alice only has one white rabbit, and the only other rabbit is the March Hare, so there really aren't "white rabbits on the run" in Alice. I haven't read watership down but I'm guessing there is more than one white rabbit...

Honestly I just hope her clothes are awesome. She has such a great sense of style that I'm always excited for what she's wearing. In her H&T videos she had such cool clothing that just oozed her vibe and it's so awesome to see.

I'll be happy with whatever it is as long as it's more exciting than Hands On Me. I really like that video, but it just looks so low budget to me. Low budget is fine, but I mean that video actually looked like it. Especially the part where she's turning in circles. It just looks lame. I don't know.
I'll take anything with Vanessa in it. No animated images or cartoons...

I was just looking at that new picture of V on the Razor and Tie website, and I wonder if the video will look anything like that.

I get the same message (I'm in Australia too). I'm pretty sure this is just the website video. It says the duration is 4:27, and the copy of the website video I have is 4:26. Maybe someone in a country where the video is available could confirm?

That video is flawless. Hands down her best yet (YES even better than White Houses!). My only regret is that we don't see her sing the last "Under" when the piano melody restarts. scene during the bridge just.. no words. Very powerful imagery.
1:58 the running is perfect for the "i thought i heard your voice" because it's like she is runnign to find the voice.
2:02 the night image blending with the day image. Love
even though you can't see her face when she says the last "under" i think it still powerful because it's like the spell has broken and night has lifted so now it's the next day and time to start over.
I love the dancing toward the end of the bridge. It reminds me of something I just read by Joseph Campbell when speaking about Buddhism:
" ' The world,' said the Buddha, 'is an ever-burning fire.' And so it is. And that is what one has to affirm, with a yea! a dance! a knowing, solemn, stately dance of the mystic bliss beyond pain that is at the heart of every mythic rite."
the trampoline jumping flips between night time and day. It makes me think that the day jumping is the day after the night jumping and it's like she is remember what she learned on her mystic journey the night before. That night she realize that the beauty is in the music and all around her. So she goes about her next day jumping and dancing and exploring with new sight.
2:45 she makes a V shape with her shawl and arms. I think that's an affirmation of who she is and who she found at the fire side alone that night. (loving that white/lace shawl as well. Reminiscant of the one she places on the piano during shows..) The V shape again at 3:06/7
"white rabbits on the run" she is in white sort of frolicking/walking through the grass.

Honestly, I'm not usually a big fan of music videos - by the time I come across them, I've worked up an image of how the song "looks" in my head so usually I just get disappointed. But that was simple enough to be inoffensive.

It's as if she is a white rabbit and an owl at the same time......
YES! I haven't really expanded on this thought in my brain, but I do mention it in another post earlier today. I kind of broke down the video into parts that I felt were significant and that is one of them.
Then, there were feathers on her hat..... Owl.
Then her fur coat.... rabbit.
Then there was this dress which really reminded me of H&T... The one that came with boots and a hat.

Beautiful video! A bit different from what I expected, but I really really loved it! It gets better at the bridge part, which is my favourite part of the song and video.

Absolutely amazing video - I missed the piano a bit too, but I really enjoyed the video clip!! Totally fits the mood of the song!!! <3 I really hope we get another video from V, I love her video clips..they're always so awesome. She looks so gorgeous throughout the whole thing - I loved the white dress!! She's really reminding me of Stevie Nicks haha - no surprise there, given the amount of time they spend together :)

Music videos are born in a lot of different ways. This one for Vanessa Carlton was about as organic as they come. My manager Chris Black ran into an old friend of his, Tracey Moulton, who's Vanessa's stylist on a flight. They both thought we should connect. Vanessa happens to live down the street from me, so we met up and she played me the new album. I instantly thought we have to go to my hometown of Woodstock and shoot a progression of my Test Shots series, which she loves. Each frame of the video would feel like a vintage fashion editorial photograph. Really I just wanted to get out of the city for the weekend with my friends and make something beautiful.
Navajo blankets, Ralph Lauren Collection gowns, chambray (with no pants), nature, bonfires... Just a few of my favorite things. We stayed at a cabin on the top of a secluded mountain and brought our two teams together. I had a ton of fun making the video. I hope you guys like it. Special thanks to Mr. Black, Kerri Kleiner, Tracey Moulton, Kellen Dengler, Ashlea Hartz, Alex Christenson, Kurt Nishimura, the rest of our teams, and the incredibly talented Vanessa Carlton. Enjoy...

I can't stop watching this video. I really like how it's sort of like a moving photo shoot, like there isn't necessarily a PLOT or STORY that each image advances, it's just about the aesthetics and beautiful imagery.
Does anyone else really like the end, where Vanessa (because clearly we're on a first name basis... lol) turns towards us and sings the last lines right at us? I can't quite articulate why, but I keep watching it over and over XD

When someone dissed Ke$ha a page or two back, I didn't say anything cuz I figured maybe it was a once-off thing, but I for one would rather us not go around bashing other artists just to make ourselves feel better. And I'm not just saying that cuz I'm a fan of Lady Gaga (which I am, and for the record she has much better music than that "Just Dance" crap), I'm saying it because Vanessa is so much better than dissing other artists for personal gain, and we should be too. Let's just enjoy her music and let other people enjoy whatever they want to (even if it sucks lol)

Digression to the topic at hand:
I just realized that this is actually her first video without anyone else.
I mean there is NO one in the video but her.
Does anyone else love the shot of her ring covered fingers touching that icicle like thingy? And the way the water drops down from them? It's just WOW. The more I watch this video, the more I feel like I'm watching a video montage of some really amazing photographer.
And I'm NEVER the kind of person who appreciates clothes. But that white dress.

Does anyone else love the shot of her ring covered fingers touching that icicle like thingy? And the way the water drops down from them? It's just WOW. The more I watch this video, the more I feel like I'm watching a video montage of some really amazing photographer.

I was contemplating that as well. My theory is not complete, but I was thinking of the hero cycle (archetypes, jung, campbell) but I haven't had time to really dissect this theory of mine so it is very flawed. It was just an initial thought that I hope to expand on later.
I love the finger shots-- her elegant owl talons. When I first saw that, the video was blurry and I thought, wouldn't it be funny if there was ring in the shape of a rabbit?

that's exactly what I was going to say when I read that first comment, hehe. There are times when I've had really vivid dreams that I remember very well (like this alien one...scary!) and then when I wake up I just keep going over and over it in my head so I don't forget then I record it in my dream journal. I think people who do the dream journaling a lot, or a lot of writers even, keep notebooks by there bed for such inspirations and dreams.

In an age where latex unitards, neon-colored hair and bras that shoot either bullets or whipped cream (Gaga, Katy Perry, respectively) have become standard fare for songstresses, it’s refreshing to see that at least one female singer isn’t afraid to be, well, normal. Enter Vanessa Carlton, whose just-debuted video for her latest single “Carousel” takes a decidedly different approach, drawing on personal style, street wear, and vintage clothing as inspiration (instead of say, bondage, aliens and childrens’ toys). But don’t take the word “normal” to mean “boring”–Carlton’s video has some serious fashion cred.
For one, it was shot by director du jour Jake Davis, whose evocative street style videos have garnered attention from editors and branding execs alike and whose own on-point fashion sense has won him a loyal fan base among menswear aficionados. Davis’ signature “Test Shot” aesthetic, which the director put to work for Fashionista’s It Girl series, can be felt throughout Carousel–and like all of his work, the video is equal parts high fashion and street style/ professionally produced video and intimate portraiture.
The video’s stylist, Tracey Mouton, has a similar approach when it comes to dressing her clients: Though she’s styled big name stars on the red carpet (Julia Stiles and Vanessa Carlton among them) and worked with magazines like Elle and Nylon, Moulton’s philosophy is all about authenticity, sticking to a client’s personal style, and eschewing everything else.
All of these elements (plus the bucolic backdrop) combine to create a video that is both beautiful and sartorially inspiring–and best of all, features clothing we could actually, you know, wear.

Isn't it refreshing to find a website or person that actually appreciate taste and simplicity, rather than ridicuously expensive, and quite frankly, often cheesy and rubbish videos. Thank god for Jake Davis and the wonderful stylist ( Tracey moulton?) and if course the wonderful V for making a timeless and magical video.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this video. I was like... what is she gonna do with this one? I couldn't think how she would make it work. But that speculation led to me seeing one of my favorite music videos of all time. This video is so visually stunning and just.... awesome.... :) I love it.... I don't know if you all remember me saying how much I thought the drums intruded too much on Harmonium and H&T. I think the percussion on this album is impeccable (except a little much in TTFS beginning like someone else had said). mostly it's so subtle and really enhance the songs. Most of the time it feels like a heartbeat that just pulls you in to physically connect you with the song. I feel like my heart tries to beat along with the drum in Bride and others

It should be able to play on your iPod, as it's an MP4 file. If not, download Vuze (vuze.com) - it's a free bittorrent client that comes with a video converter. :)
