Title: 10/2/11 - Diesel, Pittsburgh, PA (review)
Post by: pswik91 on October 02, 2011, 06:58:47 pm
Let me start off by saying Vanessa looked absolutely stunning this evening!
The setlist that I have might not be 100% in the correct order, but I'm almost positive I have
every song that she sang!  She had Sky with her tonight and they were both amazing!  She did mess up a lyric on Fair-Weather Friend
and also in Hear the Bells she sang Kneeling pray to a witchdoctor instead of now i'm asking the witchdoctor, but the witchdoctor won't tell. But it's alright, she was amazing!

Setlist:
Carousel (w/Learning to Fly Intro)
Fair-Weather Friend
White Houses (Rhodes)
Hear the Bells
London
A Thousand Miles (Rhodes)
I Don't Want to be a Bride (started off on piano, then it cut out, then finished on rhodes)

If any other NESSAholics were at this show and I forgot to post a song in the setlist, and the correct order please feel free to do so!
I also only got a couple videos, mainly cause I was just taking a few pictures.  She also told us that all of the vinyls were sold out that were being sold tonight at the show and she was pleased to talk and hang out for a bit with her fans by her "Night Shop" as she calls it =)

Hahaha, I'm uploading them right now and posting the two videos I have to my YouTube!!!
The Learning to Fly (Intro) was just a little ditty she played before Carousel at another concert, I don't remember the link or which show but I'm sure you can search the forums for it.  Rhodes is another keyboard instrument and it sounds kind of like muted mallets or something along those lines.

Ummmm, I guess you could kinda possibly call it that. But it doesn't sound like an organ at all... hahaha.

Yeah, I got there right as they were opening the doors at 6:30ish with my friends and got a pretty good standing spot!  And a lot of the people in the bar area upstairs were progressively getting louder and it irritated me =(

I was at her Washington, DC show - the Carousel intro was SO cool!  I wish I could find a recording of it, I was too awe-struck to really tell the words haha

I'm pretty sure you are speaking about the "learning to fly" intro (tom petty song, right?) there are recordings of it from any of the summer shows, she's been doing it since then.

Yep, I think she integrates that into every "Carousel" performance (or most),.. she did at the Swedish Hall show. It sounded very pretty! Both songs have similar chords, rhythm..

Here's my friend's vid of "Carousel" live at the Swedish Hall (7/7): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnsJgxCScR0

Hear The Bells gives me such a different feel live. It has a Half A Week Before the Winter/She Floats vibe, very different from the album version.

Yeah it was different with sky there and not ari singing tenor? I'm assuming cause sky was singing kind of low. But it was still great!

Thanks so much for posting this!  The intro is soooo haunting.  I remember when I saw it live last week, I hadn't ever heard that before, and I felt like I was in some sort of amazing dream or something.  Like, the song I know so well, but with different words, and then the whistling... it was just divine, I can't articulate it.

PS the Learning to Fly music video is so freaking weird.  It's like, a boy realizing he likes girls. haha

I know I absolutely loved this Hear the Bells!!!!! People kept getting louder too especially when she got to singing this song. It's probably cause they were getting drunk  ???

She alternated between the two, unless you mean for HTB? She, unfortunately, didn't get to cover HTB :/ And she didn't use the Rhodes she wanted, I think the one that she was playing on was either 'peanut brittle' or 'marshmallow'.

Well, I will take more videos on October 10th for everyone here because Vanessa and Matt are coming to my college!!  Would she use a keyboard, even though we have a Steinway concert grand available in our concert hall?

She might use both..? I think she wants her Rhodes for certain songs, like ATM, HTB, Fools Like Me, etc

Yeah, I think before she sang IDWTBAB she said she's happy to have a "night shop" opened and she'll be over there to hang out with fans after the show.  It was only for a little bit though, she had enough time to sign stuff and like chat for a minute or two but couldn't get pictures. Speaking of, I was the only one at that show who clapped during carousel and I asked her "so did you hear me clapping during carousel?" and she said oh yeah that was you? aww thanks that was very sweet of you!  So, I pretty much died she said that was very sweet of me =)

Aww, how cool that she called you sweet! Did she sign any CDs? I was curious because the cds are black, and I was wondering if they had some sort of white/gray marker to sign them with? Maybe it's odd but it was something I was thinking about haha.

If you use a keyboard, then you can see the audience face to face.

She usually uses a silver marker.

Oh good :) I assumed they would have a way of signing them, I just wanted to make sure. I was hoping she could autograph my ROTR copy when I see her live. Thank you for the answers!

Yeah, I specifically bought silver sharpies so that she could sign my CD, but she already had one =)
