Well, she's made it clear in several interviews: this is her personal choice. Others have made their choices, and have their preferences, but this is one that she's completely solid on. But I do see where you come from; I personally want to get married in a few years or so. Whatever makes V happy, what will be will be.

She said she wants to believe in trust and true love!  :D

I have seen people getting married and the feeling is just ... not there.

She's got it right! I'm planning a wedding. A simple, cheapish wedding and it's still stressing the crap out of me. I wanted to elope. Should have put my foot down!

It's not the piece of paper that makes the relationship.  Just because you have that paper and say the vows does not mean the love will never end.  With divorce rates high, people getting married quickly, and some people not being able to marry the ones they love it's actually commendable to me that one would take the stance of -- I don't need the paper, just give me the love that is supposed to go along with it and I'll be happy.
this is not as eloquent as I would like but you get the jist?
Also, don't get me wrong, I'm married  ;D

I hope people don't get the idea that she's against it. I think she made it clear in one of her interviews that it's just her. I think it's more about the pressure of society and that when you reach a particular age people start analyzing you and trying to figure out what's wrong with you if your not married.

Believe me, I'm an Indian and I know marriage for us is like supposed to be all that and stuff... But I always thought being a Catholic and being brought up in another country it'd make a difference still I've been asked the question: "Why don't you have a girlfriend? There must be something wrong no?". I'm 24 and chronically a-relationship-al(a derivative of asexual - Will Grayson, will grayson... anyone?). I agree with Vanessa on this point. I dont wanna fuckin be a groom. As of now sometimes the thought of having to live with someone because momentarily for a while you are in "LOVE" with the person you feel like you wanna live the rest of your life with them is sometimes just suffocating.

My sister is on this crazy hunt for a guy cos shes like 27 and I feel sorry for her. All that I see her doing is getting frustrated!!! It's sad.

But as I said, I am not against it. Someday I'm gonna be staring at a beautiful woman walking down the aisle and am gonna be laughing at this emo take on marriage thread post in my head.

And I feel that someday Vanessa IS going to settle down. I don't think she means she's NEVER going to be a bride. I believe it's just what she feels now. It's a combination of failed relationships and probably the pressure of being 30...

She doesn't wanna be a bride but it doesn't mean that she never will be one one day.

Just imo.

There doesn't seem to be an abstract way to discuss the song without mentioning her views/choices, unless you're picking at its structure, rhythm, etc. You have her whole declaration woven in the song, and well, it's the title, too.

I love how random this thread is. Can we not talk about her personal life though?...

I don't see it as talking about her personal life per-say just the concept.  Plus it gets other talking, like joey, giving their thoughts and experiences.  It's a great jump off for a discussion on an array of topics.  Besides, she brought it up with the song and has talked about it in interviews so it's not too too private!

You could say that the song doesn't want to be a bride. But people might think you're crazy.  ;)

^ Made me laugh. You know, she has another song that wants to walk a thousand miles. I feel so bad for it, though, because I don't think songs have legs. :'( Poor song.

I take the song to be about where she is NOW.  It can change.  I mean, Gene Simmons just married Shannon Tweed after what, over two decades?

All of this could fall by the wayside if she meets that "someone", as it will for me should I decide to again(I was married once). When you're in love--really there--the decision can be incredibly clear.

I know married people who are happy.  I know people who just live together who are miserable.  There is no science to it.  I say, do what is good for YOU.

I see so many people who are influenced too much either by tradition or the so-called "progressive" bucking against it and never really look inward to find the truth and what truly works for them.  It is no one's beeswax except the people involved.

I dunno, IMO I feel that being married kicks everything into a different, higher gear than just living together.  It's like saying "I'm not in a BAND, I just play music with 3 or 4 other dudes", like where is the identity of the union?

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but Jen just seems to be a little overly positive for it to be realistic.

this is my best friend's favorite song, and she wants to get married. She describes it as the difference between being a bride and being a wife. I thought that was a nice take on the song.

that is a nice sentiment!  I brought my sister to the show in Boston over the summer.  When the show was over she said," you know what song I really liked but I don't necessarily agree with?  That one about not wanting to be married."
I think it's a great song and reaches people on many levels because I think we all want that great love, regardless of whether or not it comes with a piece of paper.
