Title: My (Vanessa Carlton) Sheet Music Thread [NEW!!! "Ordinary Day {Alt. Version}"]
Post by: VanessaPiana on April 03, 2012, 04:42:01 pm
I've worked pretty hard on this [since late January/early February] and wasn't going to post up here until I got it just right. It's not perfect but I did my best. I listened to 'The Wreckage' & notated it as close as I could to the actual version, even adding my own flavour here & there. Comment to lemme know what you [whoever you are] think about it. I'm currently working on "Superhero" and will post it up here when I'm done w/ it. ;)

NOTE: To save you time you can download [and check out] the (attachments) down in the signature area. No having to go to any file-sharing sites or anything. Since it's hard work working on sheet music I like to usually work on one arrangement at a time. :)

Thanx lots for commenting, I appreciate it. [Didn't think anyone would respond but I guess I'd have to wait, lol.] ;) Believe me, I've really wanted to for YEARS now, but unfortunately I don't have a webcam [and I won't be getting a laptop until after my birthday -- July 1st -- and I'll be sure to get one that contains one b/c my current PC is almost 5 years old and has that sorry Windows Vista]. But I'll be sure to do just that when I'm able.

As for 'Superhero' [it was pretty simple to transcribe which is why I got it done a lot quicker] I didn't add the lyrics b/c it was pretty difficult to do so and didn't want it looking sloppier or taking up more space. I figure y'all already know the words, anyhow. Moreover I might take down & put the pdf. & mid./midi. files after making minor adjustments.

BTW I use MuseScore [free notation software] to do sheet music. After going thru many programs this is the best (free) one. The ones that were better had only 30-60 day-trial periods and afterwards you either 1) lost the free benefits or 2) had to upgrade/pay for the extra stuff afterwards. MuseScore could use some boning up, but it's the best [it also looks the best].

I plan on doing more sheet music, but I haven't really decided what (we'll see). I was hoping to post this stuff on the official VC forums, but there's no such thing; I reckon they did away w/ it long ago and the only 'official' one (left) is this one.

Cheers. :)

Hey!

Thanks for all the efforts. :) I have stopped for a while in making sheet music, so the other quasi-archive of sheet music has not been updated recently. So, thanks for posting new stuff.

I just want to ask you if it's ok for you to add all of your work to my sheet music thread. :)

You're welcome. :)

Yes, you're most certainly free to do so... just one word of caution; I may [or may not] make changes/update certain things up there from time to time [I'm kind of a perfectionist]. But I'll let you know if I do.

As of current I'm working on the song 'Heroes & Thieves'; let you know when I'm done.

Peace. ;)

Here's "Heroes & Thieves"... a revised version of it w/ some improvisation on my part. I was gonna pattern my latest after Maag's but found that the note values [as well as the tempo] was in excess of ½, so I had to do away w/ the original copy/arrangement and redo it. I'd run into some roadblocks but took little more than a day to complete.

But I'd just like to add that Maag's & Phu's version(s) isn't obsolete b/c I've come up my my own; in fact if you want a simplified version some of you might find theirs more useful. ;)

C'est la Vie is next, tho' for some reason I never could get thru learning the entire song b/c I got bored. I plan to take the 'Harmonium' sheet music book version & Phu's version kinda put it together.

Wow!! your transcriptions are amazing!!  I have always had a hard time with the left hand with other sheets, I find yours pretty accurate ! thank you!!

You're very welcome. 8)

But Phu, Maag, Pianobea [and others] deserve much of the credit b/c they created a template for me to make these sheets to start with. Moreover I'd also created these sheets in a way that they won't be too confusing to learn, on top of printing out as little paper (with as much on each page) as possible, myself included.

BTW, I'm good a learning stuff by ear, but only half way [or 50%]. I tried transcribing this stuff as close to the Real McCoy as possible, adding a few of my own licks, b/c that's what creative artists do. This is something I'd always dreamed of doing & it allows me to get my creative juices flowing. Hard work, but I love it anyhow. ;D

On top of working on C'est La Vie I'm also doing San Francisco, correcting the mistakes in the other version(s), especially the official.

Peace & cheers. :D

You're very welcome; I'm glad you enjoy the H&Ts arrangement. ;D There's a mistake that I'm gonna have to correct (when I get the chance) & I have a feature on my computer wherein I can delete the voice out (it's mainly for karaoke purposes, but it's useful for transcribing as well) so I can hear the notes better.

I haven't been up here for a while b/c I've had desktop PC problems (I'm gonna need a new one, a laptop specifically) b/f long. I'm also (still) working on Swindler, SF [I came to a standstill on this one] & Annie as well. I think I'm gonna go to Papa & HAWBTW, as well.

Here's another [by Alicia Keys]. I know [and respect] that some of you aren't a fan of hers [and I don't think I am anymore, either based on her personal life; I haven't looked at her the same since], but I just had to share some sheet music I had of hers. (Isn't it ironic that I thought that VC was gonna be the one to fail big time, but it turned out to be AK... the one I least expected the whole time.)

Anyway it's a '70s-inspired neo-soul/jazz/R&B song (12th track) from her 2nd/sophomore LP The Diary Of Alicia Keys (2003) played w/ [not necessarily the Fender Rhodes like VC did w/ her 2nd/sophomore (on 'C'est La Vie' as well] but some sort of electric piano that sounds similar. The sheet music arrangement was kinda messed up so I tried my own hand at correcting the mistakes in there.

Hope y'all like it. ;)

Here's some non-VC-related sheet music, 'Her Most Beautiful Smile' from the "Rurouni Kenshin" anime, by Iwashiro Taro, along w/ the .midi file. A beautiful piece I picked up from a piano forum/message board, which I haven't visited in years [there wasn't much to it, & many of the people were wealthy, snooty, tight-assed people who were only interested in classical music & were more than glad to flaunt pictures of their fancy pianos in their fancy, big, expensive homes].

Anyway, it's short [only 2 pages] & in the key of E Major.

I'm almost done w/ 'White Houses' & it should be up soon, too [I believe I'm gonna copy/paste it to also make a B Major version of it].

Post by: VanessaPiana on November 11, 2012, 04:08:30 pm
Here is "A Thousand Miles"... my own alternate version. Back when I first learned this song [late summer of '05] it was back when I was poor and didn't have much besides shelter, a little food, my health and the clothes on my back. Not wanting to spare the extra expense of printing out the entire song, I learned the rest of it by ear -- or from VC's official video that I had on tape at home -- and made up the parts I wasn't exactly sure of. So here it is -- the finished product -- in sheet form.

If it doesn't tickle your fancy then I'll soon have the official version up soon; I'm almost done with it, anyhow.

Enjoy. :D

Thanxs for commenting, AG.; good to see you again. :)

Here's 'Private Radio'. It actually didn't take very long to make this one... only mere days. :) It's also been modified [I've added my own take on it] for those of us who don't/can't sing so that it won't sound so boring as a piano solo. Enjoy. ;)

NOTE: See Page 5 for VC's 'P.R.'.
----------

For years I've doubted VC's singing voice, but listening closely for certain inflections, characteristics, etc., like her vibrato (especially hearing her live recordings, many that sound just as good or better than the studio recordings) I now know that she has the genuine ability to sing. But I'll have to admit that I'm disappointed that she doesn't showcase the (natural) beauty of her voice (mainly with her studio albums) as she did in times past, unfortunately. :-\

I've never learned how to play many of these songs I notate [I don't have a keyboard... I have to go across town to play piano, which I don't really do much of anymore], but I just know how to transcribe them by ear, being familiar w/ the tune and all after listening to her music for a long time.

I've also been blessed w/ being given a smartphone [with camera & audio recording features] so I can now film/record myself playing so I can post here online... whenever I find the chance to do so. Won't have to wait for/use a laptop to do so. :D

Currently working on 'Best Behavior' and plan on putting up yet another version of PR. Peace. ;D

Very nice work VanessaPiana. I'm far from my piano to test them, so I listen the midi files for now. Do you plan to do "Dear California" or "Hear the Bells"? It's not really a request, I just want to know if I should expect them :)

Here's 'She Floats'. Enjoy. ;)

@Pushglow...

I'm not the best at transcribing stuff by ear, but I certainly do my best; there's only one I do from scratch ("Talk To Me", by Keri Noble b/c I love the song, especially the piano melody and percussion, etc.; the official sheet music version isn't available, so I have to do it that way). It's my biggest challenge yet (concerning sheet music), so it's on the back burner for now. But for the rest... I use other sheet music as a crutch, whether it's already been done by others (unofficially) or derived from the official (published) notations and add my own interpretation &/or correct the mistakes already there.

But I do have a couple of programs installed in my PC to help slow down the music so I can more carefully analyze what the notes & melody/harmony is. There was one that was the best (TwelveKeys by NCH), but unfortunately -- it must have been designed to pick up on our IP addresses or something -- I can't put the trial version (14 days, or 2 weeks) back in and use it again, like I can many other programs. I'll have to purchase it if I want the real thing (it's 27-30 dollars). I've tried other programs, but w/ not much luck. Now I currently use Transcribe!, SlowMP3 and PitchScope Player. No transcribing program is 100% -- our modern technology isn't THAT far along yet -- so ain't nothing like the musically-gifted ear.
Title: Re: My (Vanesa Carlton) Sheet Music Thread [NEW!!! "Best Behavior"]
Post by: VanessaPiana on March 30, 2013, 06:54:24 pm
Here's 'Best Behavior'... the more accurate version. Enjoy. ;)

As for 'Dear California' & 'Hear the Bells'... yes, I can do those. But I've only listened to VC's latest record [ROTR] once, with the last track 'In The End' -- my favorite -- being most familiar. But I can familiarize myself with DC & HTB.

But it would really help if the official version(s) of these sheets -- along w/ 'Hands On Me' were posted here; I'm having trouble figuring out what the chords on that funny part just b/f the brief instrumental break in the middle, which is why I haven't posted it yet. I sometimes have trouble figuring out the chords, which are listed/posted above the progressions (it mainly pertains to guitars, but it's helped me out a lot on the parts where the actual notes aren't posted in the arrangement) on the official published notations.

I don't know if you're aware, but the official ROTR sheet music [whether online digital or just the entire book itself] is available, and has been for a while. So is Hands On Me & Nolita Fairytale, the only officially published sheets [I know of] that are for sale from the album 'Heroes & Thieves'.

I never knew you could buy the official NF and HOM sheet music. Are they in a physical form, because I would love it if you could point me in the direction of where to find them. I would also greatly appreciate Hear the Bells if you do plan on doing it in the near future :)

Title: Re: My (Vanesa Carlton) Sheet Music Thread [NEW!!! "She Floats"]
Post by: VanessaPiana on March 31, 2013, 08:34:28 am
@AG:

Why, certainly you can purchase the aforementioned. ;) That probably explains why the official versions of these sheets haven't been posted... it's most likely b/c no one (around these parts) really knows they're available. Now I know why they weren't up here... at least not yet. I can't post them b/c I don't have an image scanner/copier, let alone a printer. I'll have to go across town (to the local college/university library) to print out things, especially sheet music from the Internet -- which I have to pay for -- until I get a printer of my own. As for the scanner (it's by Apple or something)... forget it, it's only for faculty/staff/student body, unfortunately. ::)

Anyhow, the official sheets of NF & HOM (in addition to the music book for the entire ROTR album) are available anywhere (official) sheet music books are available, like Musicnotes, SheetMusicPlus, Hal/Leonard (the publisher for VC's sheet music), Banes & Noble, etc. MusicNotes.com even lets you sample (the first page) of the sheet music to see how it sounds. You have the choice of either ordering the digital version (and have it right away on your computer) or buying the actual book(s), which one will most likely have to deal with the shipping & handling charges, on top of having to wait for your merchandise.

I also wanna add that there's this (cute little) program/software [EveryonePiano] that I've discovered -- after testing and weeding out other lesser programs/software pertaining to pianos -- that's an 88-key piano/keyboard. It's not as user-friendly as I'd hoped, but it's useful in helping me out in testing notes in the transcribing/notation process. There's even a staff off to the side that tells you exactly where the notes are located. On top of that you can change/adjust the key to your liking [like to C Minor or F Major]. There's even some choices of these beautiful skins to go along with it.

Hi!

I read your difficulty in identifying the chord progressions of the songs. I've been a transcriber from scratch, and I just began three years ago or so. It really takes practice, trust me. The key is to familiarize yourself with the pitches. You really have to train your ears so that you can get the notes right. I noticed some discrepancies in your sheets and the songs themselves but I think you can easily correct them later on. ;) Just immerse yourself into the piano and soon, you will have really sharp ears. :D

And oh, for the chord progression, in the sheet musics from the archive I created, you can simply get the chords by observing the pattern of the left hand. It's pretty much V's style: the main chord in the left hand, the melody/magic stuff in the right. They're quite simple, actually, but magical nevertheless.

Hello. Long time, no see. :D

I have to constantly revise the sheets b/c I look back on them & see a few mistakes within them. I'm just a perfectionist when it comes to these things, and it's a work in progress. Unfortunately w/ the transcribing programs as you slow down (the songs) the quality is diminished a bit (why, I don't know; the software developers in these programs need to improve on this feature a bit). And yes indeed-y, I do need practice in the transcribing dept. b/c I've just gotten into this occupation in recent months, so I'm just getting warmed up. :)

The left hand is my main priority, b/c I can hear the R.H. better, but the L.H. is sometimes more difficult to configure, or vice/versa. Unfortunately chord progressions still aren't my forté, so I have a hard time figuring out the notes at times. I also take pride in improvisation when doing VC's stuff (so forgive me if there's some things off), b/c the key is -- when covering other artists' work -- is not only piggybacking off of them & taking inspiration from them, but making the work your own by adding your own touches, especially ones that you know would make the artists themselves proud &/or do them justice. ;)

When testing what the pitch is I either use the aforementioned virtual/PC keyboard &/or hum aloud (but try not to do it loud enough for others around to hear me, lest they think I'm strange for doing it). VC's chord progression in many of her songs are simple, but I'm also (when I'm finished w/ her) planning on doing it for other musicians, whose techniques are more complex, like Hanson, who are my favorite band.

Taylor Hanson (he's the main pianist for the group) does more Rock, Honky-Tonky, Bluesy, Gospel-like style, which sometimes has a classical influence to it [although he's classically-trained]. I'm no expert in this area, but I know that the (piano) chord progressions, notes and playing techniques are more bizarre in these genres of music.

Here's a chord chart I've downloaded from the 'Net; it doesn't have as many chords as I've expected, but it's a start for beginners (in the chord progression department, like myself) and anyone else who wants to get started. :) There's more, but I'll have to post them later on.

"Pretty Baby" -- the original album version -- should be up soon, but I'm still trying to figure out some of the chords in the bridge area. If there's mistakes in it I'll have to get back to correcting them later on. I also plan on doing the radio version next, too. Working on Für Elise (my take on it) by Beethoven and it will be posted soon, too [for those of you who are interested in the classical stuff and want to improve your skills in that area... like me].

Hey, I didn't mean it like that!  :D I hope you're not offended. It's just one thing that I've noticed when I downloaded the .midi file for Best Behaviour: the first chord in the chorus sounds happier (probably because it is a major chord? I haven't checked the sheets yet) that it should be.

Use headphones to people won't look at you weirdly, lol. Trust me, I've been there and the headphones is the best solution.

And yes, I hear you: transcribing is also about adding your personal touches to the song. :)

It's okay, S; many times things get misconstrued vis-à-vis the Internet, & I know you didn't mean any harm. :D So don't worry, no hard feelings; ain't nothin' wrong w/ constructive criticism every now & then. It's helpful for improvement. :-*

I would also like to add that putting our own creative fingerprints into others' -- including VC's -- work is in our favor [and best interest(s)], as to prevent us from being sued for plagiarism, Lol. ;)

W/ BB... well -- even when I first heard it years ago -- I always thought that it always revolved around D Major chord... or perhaps even B Minor if it's supposed to sound melancholy (although the song itself is generally in A Major... or perhaps F# Minor if it's not as lively-sounding to others). I don't know if it's different tastes (concerning tone), or if it's VC's vocal (whether it's her notes or timbre... whatever that term means) that intermingle with her piano melody/harmony. I hope you can shed some light on & break down what timbre means b/c I went to Wiki & didn't really get it. :-\

Although the quality of the live concert recording is pretty good the notes are a bit muddled & echo-y, so it's kind of hard (in some parts) to get enough clarity to interpret the notes. Perhaps it's the piano's microphone in addition to the arena or auditorium. For that reason I recently stumbled (by accident) upon a program -- MP3 Downloader -- wherein I can find & download other live versions of these songs, hoping that they're clearer (haven't played them yet, but will get around to it).

As for humming... I do use headphones, b/c my monitor's (I have a desktop PC) speaker doesn't sound that good, nor are they loud enough. I actually meant that I use my vocal chords to hum in order to test out the melody. Hope that cleared things up.
Title: Re: My (Vanesa Carlton) Sheet Music Thread [NEW!!! "Swindler (Live)"]
Post by: VanessaPiana on April 05, 2013, 09:53:45 am
Here's 'Swindler' the live version, but in double time; not the exact term I'm looking for, but it's the best I can describe it. :-\

Since I'm not exactly sure of the exact tempo of this song (VC pretty much plays by her own rules on this live performance -- w/ no metronome in her ear to help her keep the exact time & beat(s) -- like w/ her studio recordings) all those Italian words [above the first staff at the beginning of the arrangement] pretty much sum up the (general) speed, mood & pattern the song is to be played in throughout, b/c it's just too mentally exhausting to put in all those markings to indicate the aforementioned, which is why I scrapped this a while back. It's up to y'all as to how you wanna play it. Thanks. ;)

Other version will be up after I'm done putting the finishing touches on it. :)
Title: Re: My (Vanesa Carlton) Sheet Music Thread [NEW!!! "Pretty Baby (OAV)" up]
Post by: VanessaPiana on April 08, 2013, 09:20:26 am
Here's 'Pretty Baby', the OAV (original album version), y'know, the one VC [and her producer/arranger Ron Fair] made b/f the radio/video version, which I'll work on next. I'll never forget that time when someone said -- I think it was over here around these parts a while back -- that they almost cried when they saw the official notation of this song (in VC's BNN songbook) b/c they were so disappointed in how crappy it was, Lol. :( So I decided to do something about it by cooking this up, and in so doing came up with this, since I've wanted to do it for years. I did it as close to the actual song as possible -- which was kinda difficult b/c VC improvises (on the piano, which I believe was Ron Fair's brainchild) more in this studio recording then she does any other song [I can think of] during her career as a recording artist -- but I finally got it done, fortunately. Moreover I derived the piano melody from the guitar (similar to what Sobriquet has done also for one of her arrangements, lol), since the piano isn't used quite as much in this song... which is kind of a good thing b/c it made the job easier. I also believe that Ron Fair plays the keyboards (it sounds like the glockenspiel) during the bridge [if not, then it was VC], like he did in much of 'Twilight' -- perhaps except the small piano parts at the end of the choruses, which VC also does -- on VC's debut record.

This arrangement is also done in a way for those of you that either can't or don't wanna sing along while playing so that it won't sound so boring and monotonous, whether to you or anyone within earshot. ;) If there's any problems lemme know and I'll correct them later on. But in the meantime I have a bunch other (transcription & notation) projects to get to & work on, so with that said, I hope y'all enjoy this one. 8)

Here's '(Put Your) Hands On Me'... at least MY interpretation of it. Took a while but I've finally got it where I'm satisfied w/ the final results. ['Who's To Say' (WTS) should be up soon.] Hope y'all enjoy it. :-*

Moreover, here are the alternate/alternative lyrics to HOM [or PYHOM]; I changed them a bit so they'd make a little more sense. The link is posted down below, where I found them some time ago. Here they go/it goes:

Verse 1:

First I saw you in the video exchange,
I know my heart I mean will never change,
This tempo will be alright if you call me... you call me,
I lie awake at night for you and I pray...

Chorus:

We crossed the deepest oceans by now (to go) across the sea,
And if you don't believe me just put your hands on me,
And all the constellations shine down (on you and me) duress to be,
And if you don't believe me just put your hands on me...
Huh-nuh-ah...

Verse 2:

This feeling separates within,
It's barely night but still across the streets to your door...

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge:

Some deal with the stories I've told,
The tower of love like this,
When all the centuries are going old,
A thousand years of us singing,

(Vocal Improvisation)

Nah, nuh-na, nuh-na, nuh-na, nah-na...

(Instrumental Break)

B-Section/Hook:

We crunched the bidding items, we're even merely graved,
I've seen the double drama I feel that you must drain,
And all the constellations shine down duress the sea,
And if you don't believe me just put your hands on me...

(Vocal Improvisation)

Hands on me... your hands on me...

First I saw you in the video exchange.

Post by: VanessaPiana on August 02, 2013, 03:22:51 pm
Thanks for your imput, AG. :)

Sorry folks (whoever you are); I know it's been a while. I have some new sheets, two versions of 'Annie'. Couldn't decide which way to notate it, so I created two [slightly different] arrangements [with both audio files sounding identical], which are pretty self-explanatory. I had a hard time figuring out the bridge at first, but with the help of this old program All That Chords! -- as well as the official sheets & both of Maag's takes on said song -- I got it, so the actual notes are somewhat an educated guess and I'm overall satisfied with how they sound. Moreover I'll have to put the .mid & .pdf files in separate posts b/c the .pdf files are too big to combine with the .midi files.

Anywhoo, here's the sound files of both versions... hope y'all like it. ;)

Anyway, since I'm such a perfectionist, I've spent a LONG time revising "San Francisco". As a matter of fact, I've come up w/ TWO versions, one is the live version, and the other is derived from the album version. Here's the live version.
