So it was NOT AT ALL what I was expecting. BUT it was still just AMAZING. SIMPLY AMAZING. This song is my favorite off the album and it just is wow. I loved it. Loved all the visuals.

Yeah, caught me by surprise too. It's stunning! I love it, and it really fits with the song. And she looks beautiful in every shot.
My favorite song as well from ROTR, tied with Marching Line.

I am at work.  I can't watch on work computer, luckily I have my kindle fire with me and we have wifi.  But then it said not available on mobile device, so THANK YOU for making it a download because I did and it was wonderful! I had no idea what to expect.  This was fantastic!  I loved seeing all the home videos, the one of her and her brother in the pool was darling.  She seems really close to him (but not Gwen? Sisters.)  I also loved all the visuals, I kept trying to see it all.  I can't wait to watch again at home on a bigger screen.  She looks great.  I love that peach dress.  I like her hair wavy there at the end.  I like it all.  Thank you so much for this gift Vanessa!

I think no one of us would have expected the video to be like this - with all these home videos included. I thought too, she'd reveal something about her sickness. So I'm very surprised, but at the same time I LOVE it. <3 It's as personal as a video can ever be and the shots are beautiful! ♥

I also love the reference to Rabbits on the Run with these white rabbits in it. :)

I think there is more imagery and more involved that what first meets the eye, just like with Carousel.  I have to watch it more to grasp it.  I think some may have to do with the symbology of the rabbi, but mostly, the reflections to the past and what she sees in the mirror (and then how she turns it to the camer, to us, the viewer as a reflection of her own self in us?!)  I think part of her illness was being lost to herself and to her family so this song and this video is her way to reconnect.  just initial musings, subject to change.

Not sure how I feel about it. It's one of those videos you have to watch a couple times in order to fully absorb the true message & meaning behind it.

Not what I expected, but beautiful nonetheless. I was really surprised to see all those home videos, like everyone else, and I'm sure after a few more watches, we'll all be able to unravel the symbolism. I loved all the fading and merging of the shots, and in HD it's magic!

Thanks for the download link guys! I was frustrated when I opened YouTube and saw the vid was blocked outside the US.

She looks gorgeous in the video (dang, those legs...) and I really enjoyed the little clips of young Vanessa :)

Wow so beautiful! The imagery is stunning. I love all the home movies. She was and still is such an incredible dancer. I can't wait until I get home so I can view it more times. Damn work!

I also love how in certain parts they made the dancing videos sync up with the music.

Does anyone know what those are at 0:41? They almost look like wine bottles but they all have different numbers on them.

Post by: [sobriquet] on June 07, 2012, 04:52:36 am
I have some things to say about it:

1) I find the clips from her home in NY to be too sharp. I feel that if it had the same grainy texture as with the home videos, everything will fit perfectly.

2) While watching it, I can't help but think how low the budget allotted for the video is. Is this something we should put blame on to Razor & Tie?

3) Did anyone notice that in the first chorus, V was wearing a white ballerina dress while on the second verse she was wearing a black one. It reminds me of the story of The Black Swan (how Natalie Portman transformed from the white swan to the black ones). I guess it represents her health?

4) I hate the fact that we didn't get the chance to steal another glance at the keyhole like we did in Nolita Fairytale video. And no graveyard nor Chinatown. I was expecting to see them, so....

5) The rabbit, well I guess it's about the hope she found in doing this record. Anyone?

6) The mirror facing us, I think, symbolizes the things she wants to show us. She was looking at it for the first half, and she wants us to see what she was seeing.

7) Does anyone love the part before the second chorus where it fast forward to her playing the piano? V had me at that.

8) The part where she wears a bandanna - I think is when she found the cure. For whatever.

9) When she clicked those jewels in her hands, I think that's when she found it. Notice that after she first clinked them, the almost all of the next scenes were taken outside.

10) I think that V has three alter-egos: the real her (the one wearing black), the doctor (the one wearing bandanna), and the banshee (the one wearing peach dress). I think it's the banshee that's blocking her ears from hearing the bells. And after the doctor clinked jewels (aka bells), the banshee seems to, I don't know, weaken? Notice that the video ends with the banshee seems to fall.

I don't know how many things I actually got right. But then, again, we will never know.

Or maybe I'm just being unusually inventive right now.

EDIT: And I don't want to sound like an a-hole, but I'm gonna say it anyway: V, when's the next one coming out? XD

^ that is a great post, I completely agree with your idea about the personas and the symbolism and progression. What you said about the sharpness of the NY video, I thought was a way of conveying the clarity she has found, that maybe the ballet of her youth and her previous focus of her youth clouded in her mind.

Also, I'm in two minds whether the apartment setting was used for making the video more personal and for Vanessa to obviously show perhaps the Peace she has found in NY/Nolita/or a more intimate lifestyle or budgeting reasons; perhaps a little of both?

Of course it looks cheap, so does hands on me and carousel. Vanessa is never going to have a high budget music video again. I'm disappointed, but I like it for the sole reason that i like she let us in a little bit. But yeah, I wasn't even excited for this. I don't care about videos, give me new music.

I almost agree 100%.  I did not have high hopes.  I didn't wait with bated breath.  I just was rolling with whatever she wanted to give.  However, when I saw that the video was out, I was really giddy and HAD to watch it right away.  I really love it.

sobriquet I like all your interpretations and I almost wish I hadn't read them yet so I could come up with some of my own!

i was expecting more. BUT I LOVE IT SO MUCH! IT'S AWESOME!
but guys, where are the references to grey gardens, the ode to moms and her sickness?

yes, she's wearing little edie's outfit and the videos of her childhood may be the ode to her mom. but i thought we would really "know evertyhing about her". in some scenes where there is a zoom on her face (specially after the first chorus, "december crossing arms in chinatown") and then scenes of her childhood come, i feel like she's telling us a story.

but still it's a really beautiful video.

criticisms sides, I do think that it is nice V added touches from her childhood. I think she knows how much we beg to know more about her life. So while it's not the video I would hope for, I appreciate it the same.

Just got this email:

Quote

Dear [Phantom] Friends,

Today we are excited to announce the VEVO premiere of the official music video for "Hear The Bells," from Vanessa's latest album, Rabbits on the Run.
"Hear the Bells is about clarity, enlightenment.  It is song map about the journey of someone who is seeking out a remedy.  But remedies lie within us.  That is powerful and true but not always obvious.  I hope the song is a reminder.  In society the sound of a bells marks an important time, whether from a church tower or a chime in a garden. "

"This visual clip is the most revealing video I've ever done thus far.  Re-teaming with Jake Davis and his team was fluid and an inspired experience.  It was filmed at my house in New York.  The place where I wrote the song.  Doing a video for this song was Jake's idea and I'm really happy he pushed me to do it.  It is a reveal of my history woven in with the story of a reclusive woman based on little edie of grey garden.  An eccentric and wonderful lady who rarely left her house.  I believe we are our own fortune tellers."

For upcoming news and information tune in to Facebook, Myspace, and follow Vanessa on Twitter @VanessaCarlton.

Rabbits on the Run Deluxe Edition/LP is available now on iTunes by clicking here . The Deluxe LP includes 3 live acoustic bonus tracks, "Carousel" official video, "The Four Elements of Rabbits on the Run" video and "Behind the Scenes of "Carousel" video".

This is the BEST video she has ever made! It's the most consistent, in my opinion.
It's funny how some of you are saying that expected more, for me it was the reverse. I think there are so many meanings we can find on it and discuss. (and then maybe unreveal the mistery of Vanessa's sickness)
sobriquet, I really enjoyed your intrpreatation. specially about the alter-egos - it fits very well
I loved that the whole video is composed by transitions and fading effects, I think that's very relevant for the idea of the sickness - it could be some kind of emotional instability..
I know that I'll be watching this video a lot!

oh, and I wouldn't like the video so much at first if I hadn't watched Grey Gardens.

also, this (by Vanessa) can be helpful in understanding the video:

"Hear the Bells is about clarity, enlightenment. It is song map about the journey of someone who is seeking out a remedy. But remedies lie within us. That is powerful and true but not always obvious. I hope the song is a reminder. In society the sound of a bells marks an important time, whether from a church tower or a chime in a garden.

After reading the email, I think her looking in the mirror symbolizes her finding the remedy in herself and then when she turns the mirror to us, she's telling us to find our own remedies in ourselves.

I think her overall asthetic of the video was absolutely perfect. I know people had different visions/expectation for the video but in all honesty, I think this is great. Everyone hoped to see the graveyard and other places she talked about in the song but when you think about it, that's such an obvious move an isn't very creative.  Sure she could've made it very obvious by putting everything in the video that she talked about but where would the beauty of it all be?  I adore the video and it has such a powerful message that goes along with it. Brava V!! :)

The shots of her in the orange dress are STUNNING. But I have to admit, me being a dance snob and all, when the videos of her doing the fouette turns, I was kinda cringing. Her passé was never connected…and it's like…come on V…you went to ABT.

I believe she was quite young at that point. I'm sure it was definitely corrected eventually, but at that age, it's hard to have complete kinesthesia.

Electronic dance pop??? nooooo, I have enough with Gaga, It would be fun to hear Vanessa with electronic dance pop but maybe just remixes for her songs, not a complete dance album, maybe something like Wanted Ripe Remix

Everything that everyone and said.

From the message there seems to be a hint of depression through a solitary hermit like lifestyle? I dunno. This is like Fruedian, double entendre, uber  metaphorically deep.

What caught my eye was that she was the princess in that enactment of the Swan Lake right? She wears white in one part and then black and I am a HUGE fan of 'Black Swan' and that bit actually stood out. But she is a BRILLIANT dancer.

SHIT.

So beautiful and graceful. I wish she'd dance more!!!

I tweeted Jocandraw a few weeks ago asking that and she said they were 'hatching something.'

I'm actually surprised the website hasn't been updated or the video promoted more on Twitter, you barely ever see anything Vanessa related on the Razor&Tie twitter page..

However, back to the video, bauerhouse on tumblr has made some really nice gifs, but seen as I can barely upload a picture, let alone a moving one, here are the URLs
http://bauerhouse.tumblr.com/post/24747219916/hear-the-bells-vanessa-carlton.

If there's one negative about the video, I think it's that all the beautiful merging of the shots together makes it exceptionally difficult to get a clear print screen for some graphics.

It sounds like I'm the only person who isn't thrilled with the result.  I hesitate to even mention this.....but I do so respectfully of those who obviously do not share my opinion.

I was disappointed.  Here's my reasons:  I think of the darkness of the song, the black album cover, how great it would have been to do a goth-y vid for it, go maybe black and white, maybe undersaturate the colors?  I dunno,  I was hoping that it would really communicate the depth of the lyrics, the pain being felt(lyrical and otherwise).

It looks like there were some transfers of VC's old family films, some quick inserts shot at her apartment, everything dumped into Avid or Final Cut Pro and that was that.
I am fully aware that a video as a marketing tool is probably NOT money well-spent these days, especially as the market shrinks more and more.  To really do a killer video might have been kibboshed as too much of an expense.

To me, it's almost jarring how ill-fitting it is.  I just don't think the images match the sonic quality in any way.
Look, we all live with these songs and have our own images in our heads, so it's only my opinion, but I feel like this was a real missed opportunity.

But......if people are checking it out.....that's really all I care about. If people are hearing just how far Vanessa has come as an artist, the video could be a still of an old couch for 5 minutes and I'd be OK with it.

On a similar note, even if Vanessa does some electronic pop, I would not dismiss it out of hand.  I do not think she would waste our time.  It's a big risk, she could lose a lot of fans if she went all Ke$ha or worse on us.  She could gain more fans overall.  It's an interesting move if she does it.

i actually was waiting for a dark scenery too. you know, with dead trees, dark purple sky, a big yellow moon, gravestones... i really missed that when i watched the video, but i think it's still amazing.

about the dance-pop thing... guys, she's not taking kesha and britney spears as inspirations. she's been reading mythology and listening to blouse, washed out, mansions on the moon, youth lagoon... obviously great things will come from this.

For days I've been trying to place why I wasn't getting the video, and I think it's because the vision in my head was totally different... my vision was something dark that just clenches at your soul, and like Fred_Sayboya said, "dead trees, dark purple sky, a big yellow moon, gravestones." that's the imagines that were in my head. So not seeing that was kind of a disappointment. I wonder if perhaps she wanted to show a different side of the story, different from what the lyrics say.

I love the idea with the old home movies, wasn't expecting that at all! It was nice to see those, but I didn't care for all of the overlapping, I think it is nice but too much going on at once.

I still very much like the song, and think they did a lovely job.

I agree with you three above^ ( I have no idea how to quote multiples)

(:

I like the video, but it is definitely not what I expected. Though her music vids are always a lot brighter than the music. I don't know if that makes sense...

i was wondering... maybe the sickness V had is related to her childhood. i mean, like a manifestation from her past, you know? like marilyn monroe.

From my own speculation and her issues with dancing that she talked about in pleased to meet you, along with her weight fluctuations, I can see her suffering from an eating disorder. I always thought that paradise was about an eating disorder.

You know I've always thought about that, and perhaps it's true. She always seemed so skinny, but now she looks very healthy, like her skin is glowing now if you get what I'm saying. Either way, whatever the song is about, I'm very glad that Vanessa is healthy, and has gotten passed her problems.

i've been thinking again about this sickness we don't know.

what if vanessa had been looking at her past and started to feel guilty for giving ballet up? maybe she had been thinking that she took the wrong way and that she was not meant to be a singer. maybe that's where her writer's block came from.

i guess we'll never know the truth, but the hear the bells definitely gives a hint indicating that this sickness has something to do with her past or ballet.

I know people are gonna roll their eyes reading this, but if you watch the Katy Perry video for "Wide Awake"... I feel the references to the past in the HTB vid I kinda believe is analogous to the kid in Katy's video.

It's like V said, sometimes the cure lies within us. Something about our past.

Damn, its so cryptic.

I was just thinking about that when I saw some pictures from the H&T era.  Maybe it was an eating disorder.  She looks healthier now
