Vanessa Carlton will release a digital single "I'll Wait For You" on 10/1/13.
It was around midnight at the tail end of last winter when my friend Patrick called me to tell me he had been bewitched by a song. He had been given his grandmother's collection of 78's and had discovered this tune sung by Bernice Parks. He played it for me thru the phone while I laid on the couch with my dog...tv on mute. It sounded like a beauty.
Patrick had a plan. He asked if I'd fly down to Nashville (from New York) and reinterpret this song with he and his pal Luke. Victor (dog) and I flew down a week later.
When I started to sing, a rain storm broke out. I sang thru the whole storm in this lovely studio behind a house. Luke played slide guitar while I sang and Patrick played drums in a bombastic orchestral style later that evening. Carl (who plays in My Morning Jacket with Patrick) came by late that night and sang some crazy high background parts. Hancock Reserve may or may not have been flowing.
The next day I flew home...just in time to miss the incoming Nashville tornado.
We all fell under the spell of a simple and beautiful song and it was an honor to sing on it with such a talented group of guys. Im happy I picked up the phone that night.
Enjoy "I'll Wait for You"
xx

This seem to be the lyrics!
I'LL WAIT FOR YOU
Robert Mellin / Allen / Spector
I'll wait for you till you come back,
Till you come back to me;
I'll wait for you, and only you,
And love you constantly!
And when you pray, I'll hear you;
And I'll be near,
Whispering dear,
That I'll wait for you till you come back,
Till you come back to me.
And when you pray, I'll hear you;
And I'll be near,
Whispering dear,
That I'll wait for you till you come back,
Till you come back to me.

Whoa, that sounds hauntingly beautiful. I'm just so so thrilled that Vanessa is putting new music out there, that short clip made me realise again just how much I love her and her music. And i really feel the song too like you, sobriquet, sigh.
-
sounds a bit country, but I like it! I like the effects they have used on it.
-
Wow, the preview sounds amazing! I've got goose bumps, it's just hauntingly beautiful.. If her upcoming record is sounding like this I'll love it so.
-
Very excited...I am really looking forward to buying it on Tuesday!
-
I'll Wait For You is up on Spotify here in Sweden. It's short but beautiful! The arrangement of the song is stunning!
-
Just downloaded from amazon UK. Very sweet! I have a feeling this won't be on the album though, just a cover she chucked out before the tour as a treat.
-
I'm anxious to hear! But here in Brazil I can't buy from any online store! :-\
-
Will be buying from Amazon MP3 at midnight tonight! Can't wait for the November cali shows!!!!!!!!!
-
someone can upload on 4shared or mediafire
-
Can we not upload it anywhere yet? Let's just at least give the song its chance to sell, you know. (Cause we know people who download it will be putting it to YT right away, so..)
-
I just bought mine at Amazon. :)
-
Got mine on Amazon too!! Yay! Why would a nessaholic suggest file sharing? Why not just pay the 0.99 cents and buy it? Support V. ???? :(
-
I don't know where that Eduardo guy lives but give it a day or two and you will probably be able to purchase if not I'm sure it will be posted to V's official YouTube account soon.
-

Not too fond of the country-ish sound she's been playing with recently :/ I wish I liked this more.

I don't know what other songs sound country because I haven't listened to any of the new songs posted. However, THIS SONG is not HERS. If you read the description of how this song came to be, you would realize this is not her song, this is most likely not going to be on the album; I would bet money on it. It was a side project that Patrick Hallahan from MMJ called her up to ask her to do. I'm not sure why this concept is so hard for people to wrap their heads around.
Her voice is heaven, per usual, and the ethereal quality is cool--I like the atmosphere. It does sound country to me. My guess is the records that Patrick was going through were country albums.. keep in mind, the band My Morning Jacket are from Kentucky... they probably grew up on country music...so it stands to reason that Patrick's parents had country albums...when he found this song, he thought of re imagining it with Vanessa on vocals...the end. It is a nice little song to keep us going until the tour and the new album!

I'm aware of all of that. I'm not used to not liking new Vanessa music. I guess it's not acceptable to say you don't like something. I'm sorry I offended you by stating my opinion. I'll think twice about doing that again here.
-
i'm not offended, just annoyed. There have been multiple people who lack the understanding of where this song came from.
you can state your opinion, but if others don't agree, then they too can express their opinion. Not everyone is going to feel the same. when someone states an opinion, expect that someone else just might disagree, such is life.
-
I love it...and I REALLY don't see a major departure from ROTR so if you like that album and not this that confuses me a bit. This song is so simple and beautiful. Knowing how it came about makes me like it even more.
-
well, keep in mind guys that this isn't a new song from the album. it's just a cover of another song.

Still, people don't have to like EVERYTHING V does :) so be cool guys, don't start throwing pianos on peoples heads because of different taste and opinions.
-
My two cents tho:
Aesthetically, the production of the song was very much ROTR. Listen to Get Good and you will hear what I mean.
I don't get the country reference that some of us hear in it, tho. It's not much of a country for me. It's a ballad, yes, but more of folksy-ambient ballad. Country? Not so much.

that's not what I was doing. you can dislike anything you want. but there are been references to her new sound based on this song which is not hers, nor will it be on the album.

Congratulations Vanessa!!! :) :D ;D

I don't get it. Love her voice, song's okay, I guess I'm not intellectual or artistic enough to understand the interpretive dance. contrast between a sweet, smooth song and spasmodic, non-fluent dancing?
-
I found the contrast to be very weird at first. However, at the end of video, as the last lyrics echoed, I think I had an inkling of the reason behind the jaggedness of the movements - it's supposed to counter the peaceful song, alluding to the other half of waiting: the restlessness, the impatience, the wild desire to reach out and follow instead of just simply waiting.
I dunno. It's my take on it. I like how minimalist it is. Something definitely new and high art.
-
I really like the video. I think the intensity in the dance is a beautiful contrast to the song. I wonder if it's its done in one take?

interesting theory. that seems about the closest thing I can imagine!

This is a brilliant theory. Explains why he pounds his prayers on his chest.
I also like how we wait, and wait, and wait for Vanessa to appear.

love the song, hate the video.

I had the same impression.
