Later tonight the forums will be moved to a new home... faster server... faster link.  More better in general.  Sometime tonight (when people are not on) it'll be moved.  Total downtime is prolly like 10-15 mins.

Title: Forum Server Maintenance 9/14 - 12AM PDT (-0700 GMT)
Post by: Trolan on September 13, 2004, 05:45:59 pm
The server the forums are hosted on will be unavailable from 12am PDT, September 14th, 2004 for approximately 30-60 minutes.  This is due to a series of software and hardware upgrades I am performing on it.

Even though I read this I STILL tried to access it. Bleh. lol

If it is not too much to ask, what kind of hardware and software upgrades did you do?

OS update to current FreeBSD 4.10 code, motherboard BIOS update and added another 512MB of RAM to the server.
Title: One more update in the pipeline
Post by: Trolan on October 12, 2004, 07:04:06 pm
Thursday 10/14/2004 at 3:30am PDT (-0700), I will be taking the server down for maybe 20-30 minutes to replace the heatsink and fan.  The one in there isn't really all that well suited to being in a 2U case, and has caused some problems as of late, so it's time to swap it out with something more suited to the role, and a bit shorter.

And for the curious, here's what the server looks like: http://trolans.net/gallery/general/DSC00341

HS/Fan update all completed, no problems.  Used a bit of the time I gave myself to let it cool down... darn thing was toasty.  As it is, after it's been in there a bit, I'm seeing about 30F cooler temps from the CPU monitor.  I'm happy.

http://trolans.net/moblog.php?id=21 for the pic of the guts w/the old sink.  New one is about 1/2" shorter and doesn't ride right below the case lid.

The server will be down from about 3-5am PDT 8/16/08.

I'm doing what is effectively a clean install of FreeBSD 7.0 on new mirrored 1TB drives.  I've built it on another box I have, and will be copying over user data only to the new drives and then installing those.  Makes for a good excuse to clear out the old crud.  The existing 300GB mirrors have been in continuous service for more than 3 years, so it's time to swap 'em out.

Power supply death this morning.  Took a bit to find a replacement, and wound up jury-rigging a standard power supply into the 2U case.  It ain't pretty, but it'll work.

All should be good from here on.
