Title: VC Song Interpretations
Post by: loveplasticlove on October 18, 2003, 06:47:21 am
Does anyone sometimes wonder what songs VC's songs are about.  Some are really obvious, but others stump me.  And we all had our ideas about She Smokes ahem I mean She Floats.... but its about a dead girl!  Enlighten me with your song interpretations... please.

I think its talking about the moment she is going to kill herself

Watching puddles gather rain(she is outside)
Theres no better place to lay(thats were the action is going down)
Shes as fine as dandelions blowing in the wind(she is like gonna jump )
Shes not thinkin' about anything...(she isnt thinking about the problems)
She floats(she jumps)
Floats...

Wearing black patent mary janes(she was wearing that wen she jumped)
She steps out in to the rain
She's as dry as clear blue skies
Swallowing you whole
God knows secrets though I'm told(no one knows why she did it)
She floats

ahhh... ahhh...

She's as fine as dandelions blowing in the wind
Shes not thinkin she's listening
She floats... She floats... Floats...
Floats...
She floats... She floats... Floats...
Floats...

i dont know i know its like wierd and stuff

Hmmm... Wanted is about a gay soap star hitting on her...

I think Paradise is about loneliness after breaking up, and reflecting on their moments together?

Everytime she closed her eyes she saw what could have been...
... One last chance to feel alright...
Don't pretend to hold it in, just let it out...

*shrugs*

Paradise is about having no will to live.
and paradise is perfection.. and very much unattainable.
soo I think it's about realizing you cannot reach this unattainable goal
and giving up/losing all hope.

Hmmm.
but that's just me.

Paradise

Once upon a year gone by
She saw herself give in (she's giving up on life)
Every time she closed her eyes
She saw what could have been(she regrets the past, she wanted to do something, but never did, asking herself..'what if?)
Well nothing hurts and nothing bleeds
When covers tucked in tight(she's not dying like in pain, shes like depressed and stuff)
Funny when the bottom drops
How she forgets to fight... to fight
(shes not fighting it, ..its like she wants to die)
And it's one more day in paradise
One more day in paradise
(today is her last day to live)

As darkness quickly steals the light
That shined within her eyes
(totally depressed)
She slowly swallows all her fear
And soothes her mind with lies
(she pretends things are going fine, when they just arn't)
Well all she wants and all she needs
Are reasons to survive
(shes trying to figure out why she should live...i believe she is about to comitt scuiside)
A day in which the sun will take
Her artificial light... her light
(shes going to die)

And it's one more day in paradise
One more day in paradise
It's one more day in paradise
One last chance to feel alright... alright
(she lives in a world where people around her are happy, but she has her own problems, and since this is her last day to live, cause shes gonna kill herself, shes just looking for a reason not to kill herself...one last chance to feel better...)

Don't pretend to hold it in just let it out
Don't pretend to hold it in just push it out
(dont pretend to be happy when your not, just express your true feelings)
Don't you try to hold it in just let it out and
Don't you try to hold it in you hold it in

One more day in paradise
One more day in paradise
It's one more day in paradise
One last chance to feel alright...

Once upon a year gone by
She saw herself give in
Every time she closed her eyes
She saw what could have been

--------------------------------------------
well, thats how i look at Paradise....
someone who is lost and has no hope left..they just want to die, and they cant find reasons to stay alive...
i think its mainly about dealing with scuiside as an effect from depression

Prince was sorta an assertion of her independence.
She's sorta taunting this guy
like
'What are you going to do? but whatever you doo is fine.. because I don't need you.'
but that is my opinion ;D

I look at the song as a whole..

sooo hmm.

I think Prince is more of a Take Me Or Leave Me song.  I think that the narrator is saying to her Prince that she wants him and has feelings for him and wants to be with him, but this guy is either pushing her away or something likr that.

Willing and able to run
willing and able to come (she's willing to go to him and run to him if he wants her to because she wants to be with him)

and if i wait for you now
would you come would you run (she's saying that she's waiting for him to come to her because she's willing to go to him as well)
would you bring it back around
oh baby how (she wants him to come back to her and have the relationship be as it was before things got messed up)

if it all went away
nothing left to say
oh would you fight it
or would you lay down (if she decided to leave him and not come to him anymore what would he do?  Would he chase after her or and get her back or would he just give up)
at the hand of your God
oh could see the light (at the hand of your God is like at the very end of everything when he has nothing else but God, would he see that she was the best thing to ever happen to him and he let her get away)
Oh my Prince can't you see what's been found? (she's giving him the final choice, can't you see that i'm here right in front of you and now you're still going to let me get away)
Willing and able to run
willing and able to come
willing and able to run i am willing, willing (she's still hanging on to some hope that he'll still want her to be with him)

i think it would be interesting to hear what people think ATM is about, especially since it's "not about distance!"
Title: VC Song Interpretations
Post by: Mountaineer on October 18, 2003, 02:01:00 pm
well im going with ATM then

Makin' my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I'm home bound(She feels like weird like nothing is important any more)

Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd(she doesnt care about the ppl and the stuff thats going on)

And I need you
And I miss you(she doesnt care cus she needs him and misses him)
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by(hopes the time goes fast so she can see him)
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
Tonight(she just wants to see him,she would go anywhere to see him or be with him)

It's always times like these
When I think of you
And I wonder
If you ever
Think of me(she is thinking if he remembers her or still loves her)

'Cause everything's so wrong
And I don't belong
Living in your
Precious memory(she thinks she isnt good enought for him)

(same as the other chorus)
'Cause I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
Tonight

And I, I
Don't want to let you know
I, I
Drown in your memory
I, I
Don't want to let this go
I, I
Don't....(she doesnt want him to forget her)

(sames as above)
Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I'm home bound

Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd

And I still need you
And I still miss you
And now I wonder....(she still misses him no matter what)

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass us by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you...

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
If I could
Just hold you
Tonight  (she wnats to be with him no matter what.Or just see him)

i just wrote that.just came to mind

A Thousand Miles? well that one has a special meaning to me! it was just getting big around the same time my grandma passed away, so i guess thats why i have this interpretation. that she's missing someone who has passed away.

"and I need you
and I miss you
and now I wonder"
^ saying she misses the person

"if I could fall into the sky
do you think time would pass me by
cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
if I could see you ... tonight"
^ falling into the sky, maybe cause she knows the person is in heaven, and she wants to be with him/her for a little while and wonders if time would pass her while she was there.

"it's always times like these
when I think of you
and I wonder if you ever think of me

cause everything's so wrong
and I don't belong
livin' in your precious memory"
^ living in the memory the person has left behind.

so yeah... i guess i just think of because of what i was going through when the song was out, and that song got me through it.

I did a small report on this song for school, and I saw it as a girl who finally has everything she ever wanted. But now she has nothing else to want, no more dreams, no more fantasies. She has nothing to live for.

i always thought that she floats was about her childhood for somereason

"wearing black pattented mary janes" i always think of a little girl wearing mary janes you know?

"god knows secrets that i told" little girls tell their friends secrets

"shes not thinking bout anything, she floats" when youre a kid you dont really think deeply bout too much stuff, i never really got the "she floats" part though..
well i guess vanessa proved my interpretation wrong but thats what i used to think.

now paradise, i dont want to start a controversy or people being angry or offended or anything, but i always interpreted paradise to be a song about almost losing virginity?

"once upon a year gone by she saw herself give in
every time she closed her eyes she saw what could have been
well nothing hurts and nothing bleeds when covers tucked in tight
funny when the bottom drops out, she forgets to fight, to fight
"

no one else has said anything about that, but thats just what i thought of the first time i heard this song...
Title: VC Song Interpretations
Post by: Lucy-san on October 19, 2003, 09:40:47 pm
ooo...thats so possible.

well nothing hurts and nothing bleeds when covers tucked in tight

that could be very literal lol.

and its one more day in paradise
one last chance to feel alright

maybe shes reliving the last day before...er...it... happened and regretting it? knowing she'll never feel or be 'alright" again. she'll never be in the paradise of youth and innocence again.

i thought it was her troubles (like twilight) leaving ballet and into music, but finding the music bussiness a struggle as well...

"every time she closed her eyes she saw what could have been" seeing what she could have been if she stayed in ballet.

and she wasn't her happiest during the time she was at that school...

but i guess it could be about losing your virginity...IDK.

of course that makes the whole "don't you try to hold it" verse sound really nasty.

I always thought that Paradise was about leaving ballet

I know she says superhero is about that but I really think Paradise could be too.

It definitely reminds me of my experience of deciding to stop dancing seriously. The whole "one more day in paradise" is like ironic because she thought ballet was her "paradise" but suddenly its not. So its really just one more day of dragging yourself to classes youre supposed to love and putting on that fake ballerina smile while the teacher tells you you are doing everything wrong and all you want to do is kick her in the face. I like to imagine that "what could have been" is her actually kicking the teacher all grande battement style...or just like turning on a boom box and busting out to something non classical in the middle of class...hehee.

hmmm I can't think of any more ties specifically right now.
so...i guess thats my two cents.

all good interpretations..
I enjoyed reading them.
But we all have to see that Vanessa's writing style
is so awkward.  I don't think any of her songs
mean what they seem like.
I am serious bc I always thought that " she floats"
was about being high
* funny by the way nicole on the " she smokes" Bwahaha*

only she knows the answers.
She should explain what all the songs are about on her
next album, like Chantal Kreviazuk did in her limited Edition.

I would have to give David Hart the credit on that.  He created "she smokes" lol

i think swindler is about a guy that came on the vanessa and wanted to have a sexual relationship but was already married and she also knew the guy well like he was her friend for a couple of year.  and the guy only was talking to her for sex

"hey mister married man I know you"ll come again till you find just what your looking for"

"and now I understand just how you work your plan first your warm and then you just burn"

i think carnival is when vanessa is telling a guy how she feels about their relationship that was once there but then they broke up and she wanted him back!

this is just my opinion!  what are your opinions on swindler and carnvial
Title: VC Song Interpretations
Post by: Chloe on December 17, 2003, 04:01:28 pm
my interpritation of carnival was that maybe she's not happy with the way her relationship is working and she's thinking of letting it go but she doesn't want to. like "never thought it'd hurt so bad...i just wanted to love you" and then "don't you run from the show cause i just want you to know that i love any way and i will not let you go, but you run every day and i CAN'T KEEP CHASING YOU through this old carnival where the sun shines..." etc. i dunno if that's it but that's how i saw it after i listened to it a few times... and i kind of feel like the way i interpret that song is how i feel right now.

I think Wonder is about a lesson VC learned.  That lesson is:

If you don't know why you're doing something, get lost, or if things are not working out, to start from the begining again.  I get the impression of a dance in a recital(even though I haven't had the experience of one) or like she did when she changed careers from the music somehow.

Title: Paradise & Twilight
Post by: Julie on June 29, 2005, 08:29:39 pm
Ok, so my threads have been moved around but finally, here's it's permanent home...lol:

Paradise

once upon a year gone by
she saw herself give in
every time she closed her eyes
she saw what could have been
well nothing hurts and nothing bleeds
when covers tucked in tight
funny when the bottom drops
how she forgets to fight...to fight

and it's one more day in paradise
one more day in paradise

as darkness quickly steals the light
that shined within her eyes
she slowly swallows all her fear
and soothes her mind with lies
well all she wants and all she needs
are reasons to survive
a day in which the sun will take
her artificial light...her light

don't pretend to hold it in just let it out
don't pretend to hold it in just push it out
don't you try to hold it in just let it out and
don't you try to hold it in you hold it in

once upon a year gone by
she saw herselg give in
every time she closed her eyes
she saw what could have been

I think this song is about a woman who felt very submissive, subordinant, and spineless in the relationship she was in and when she finally breaks apart from this person her feelings are getting lower and lower than it was before because she hasn't truly found herself yet. In a way, the "paradise" is just bliss within ignorance as some would say.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twilight

I was stained, with a role,
in a day not my own
but as you walked into my life
you showed what needed to be shown
and I always knew, what was right
I just didn't know that I might
peel away and choose to see
with such a different sight

and I will never see the sky the same way,
and I will learn to say good-bye to yesterday
and I will never cease to fly if held down,
and I will always reach too high cause I've seen,
cause I've seen, twilight

never cared never wanted
never sought to see what flaunted
so on purpose so in my face
couldn't see beyond my own place
it was so easy not to behold what I could hold
but you taught me I could change
whatever came within these shallow days

as the sun shines through it pushes away
and pushes ahead
it fills the warmth of blue
and leaves a chill instead and
I didn't know that I could be
so blind to all that is so real
but as illusion dies
I see there is so much to be revealed

I was stained, by a role,
in a day not my own
but as you walked into my life
you showed what needed to be shown
I always knew what was right
I just didn't know that I might
peel away and choose to see
with such a different sight

I think this song is about how perfect a relationship she had with someone was and now that it's over she has set her expectations too high to where no one can ever compare and because of this, she is alone. Stained because it will never leave her mind that someone will never measure up.

San Francisco

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID, LIKE A BOY OF SUMMER GIVES HIS FIRST KISS
LOVE IS DANCING ON MY FINGER,
HE GOT TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER AND LINGERED
NOW I'M WALKING WITH THE LIVING
I ALWAYS LIKED STEINBACK AND THOSE OLD MEN WHISTLING

WE'RE BACK, WE'RE BACK IN SAN FRANCISCO
WE'RE BACK AND YOU TELL ME I'M HOME

TALKING IN THE MISSION OVER COFFEE
THIS IS MY EUTOPIA, MAN, I'LL BE YOUR LADY
AS THE OCEAN RISES AND THE SUN IS FADING

WE'RE BACK, WE'RE BACK IN SAN FRANCISCO,
WE'RE BACK, WE'RE BACK IN SAN FRAN

AND NOW I FEEL THE EVER AFTER
OVER RED WINE ON THE EVE OF SUMMER
THE BUZZ, THE BUZZ OF THE CITY AS WE SETTLE IN IT'S MAJESTY

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LIKE A BOY OF SUMMER GIVES HIS FIRST KISS
YOU TELL ME I'M HOME...YOU TELL ME I'M HOME
BACK IN SAN FRANCISCO
I KNOW WHAT YOU DID BACK IN SAN FRANCISCO

What do you all think of this one?

Afterglow

JUST WHEN THE DAYS START GETTING COLDER,
I WALK THE STREETS I NEVER KNEW
THERE'S SOME WORDS, I NEVER TOLD YOU,
THE SOUND RINGS OUT LIKE THE TRUTH

AND IF YOU COULD SEE, WHAT'S COME OVER ME, THEN YOU WOULD KNOW
CAUSE I'M WALKIN' FREE, THE WIND AT MY BACK, BATHED IN AFTERGLOW

AS I SIT HERE IN THIS DARK ROOM, ALL I SEEM TO FEEL IS LIGHT
I SEE COLOR, I SEE THE MAROON IN THE BLOOD OF THIS LIFE...THAT'S OURS

AND IF YOU COULD SEE, WHAT'S COME OVER ME THEN YOU WOULD KNOW
CAUSE I'M WALKIN' FREE, THE WIND AT MY BACK, BATHED IN AFTERGLOW

WATCH THE SUN IT PAINTS AN ORANGE SKY
LAY ME DOWN AND FEEL THE DAYS GONE BY

JUST WHEN THE DAYS START GETTING LONGER
I WALK THE STREETS I NEVER KNEW...THE SUN COMES OUT FOR YOU

AND IF YOU COULD SEE, WHAT'S COME OVER ME, THEN YOU WOULD KNOW
CAUSE I'M WALKIN' FREE, THE WIND AT MY BACK, BATHED IN AFTERGLOW

Private Radio

ALL THE WORLD HAS GONE TO BED, AND I'M DROWNING IN IT'S SILENCE
BUT A SOLITUDE LIVES IN MY HEAD FROM YOU, BABY.
AND IF THIS SILENCE WAS A SONG,
IT'S RHYTHM GROOVES AND IT'S A PRIVATE RADIO
AND ON THIS NIGHT I DO BELONG IN HARMONY
YOU CAN'T DENY ME, YOU WILL OBLIGE ME, IT'S MY MELODY

WHEN THE NIGHT COMES AND NO ONE KNOWS
I CAN HEAR IT, I GOT MY PRIVATE RADIO

FIND ME OUT OF MY PILLOW
CAUSE I'M LYIN' HERE BUT I'M READY GOOD TO GO
AND ON A WHIM I LEAVE THIS TOWN
OR NOT I'LL STAY AND CHASE THE SUN DOWN
YOU CAN'T DENY ME, YOU WILL OBLIGE ME, IT'S MY MELODY

WHEN THE NIGHT COMES AND NO ONE KNOWS
I CAN HEAR IT, I GOT MY PRIVATE RADIO

CATCH ME NOT, CAN'T CALL ME LATER. MORNING'S RISING

ALL THE WORLD HAS GONE TO BED
AND THERE'S A SOUND INSIDE MY HEAD
AND IN THE DARK INSIDE MY BED
THE MELODY THAT'S IN MY HEAD

WHEN THE NIGHT COMES AND NO ONE KNOWS
I CAN HEAR IT, I GOT MY PRIVATE RADIO

What do you guys think?

Title: HAWBTW
Post by: Arwen on July 02, 2005, 08:55:41 pm
HAWBTW is a metaphor for the music industry. The unicorns are talented musicians (such as V) who aren't given a chance because they are killed and brought down by the vampires. The vampires would be, for example, Vanessa's old record label A&M, or the talentless people who claim to be musicians that suck up all the spotlight.

The Wreckage

SPEEDING
INTO THE HORIZON
DREAMING OF THE SIREN
WISHING FOR HER BROKEN GLASS
ON THE HIGHWAY
IT COULD BE SO EASY

THE RHYTHM
RHYTHM OF AN ENGINE
ALWAYS MAKES ME EMPTY
I SEE THE HEADLIGHTS COMING AT ME
I CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER

FLYING
FLYING IN SLOW MOTION
WIND THROUGH MY HAIR AND
RIPPING THROUGH THE SCENERY
THAT'S MADE OF THE WRECKAGE
IT IS NOT A SECRET

SPEEDING
INTO THE HORIZON
DREAMING OF THE SIREN
WISHING FOR HER BROKEN GLASS
ON THE HIGHWAY
IT COULD BE SO EASY

What about "The Wreckage"?

I wouldn't think so because the one in "The One" never could see how special Vanessa (or the singer, if it's told from another person's point of view) was until it was too late.

Title: I think the one is about stephan.
Post by: izzy_hamilton on July 04, 2005, 03:05:48 am
Holiday, and I've come home
Hope to see this boy I know
I can't wait for us to be alone

Flippin' through the radio
We sing along to the indie show
The songs they play mean more than I can say

And the tape I made you
Hope you think of me when it plays through
Feel kind of sad now that it's done

(Her last album had many Stephan songs, maybe that's the tape??)

You think my time's for free
In all the ways you say to me
"Sweet versions of lets wait and see"

(Stephan isn't exactly a commitment minded man and he has said that in the past)

But you're always a golden boy
And I'm the girl that you enjoy
My parents say "Isn't he a gifted son?"

(Stephan is very gifted)

Time is always passing by
And still I have to wonder why
You can't come and tell me I'm the one

(If this is a recent song and she has only been with him during this time... sounds like it’s about Stephan to me)

Summer goes and we have grown
We have our friends, live on our own
Still, I'm not the girl you want me to be

(They live together etc... but from the sound of his last Cd he possibly still has a thing for Charlize and Vanessa knows this)

See gravity can bend the time
Funny I always liked your mind
But this whole thing is crushing me

(She loves his creative mind but now it's backfiring on her because he can't commit)

Well you're always a golden boy
In this girl's heart that you destroyed
You smile at me and then you have your fun

(Everyone is always saying he's a cheater and maybe he deigns it and his smile makes her believe him, or maybe he comes clean and he smiles at her and she forgives him...)

Time is always passing by
Still I give you another try
And hope that you will see
That I'm the one

(She's happy waiting for him to grow up and commit and realise that they are soul mates etc: even though she's not getting any younger and even though he is hurting her)

You say you're scared
To get too close
Come let's see how it goes
I see him now, at the show
7th in the 7th row

And now you look at me
And see what I've known for so long
It's sad that you can be
So lovely, yet so wrong

(Then one day he finally realises that he is 40 and still afraid of commitment... and see's himself though Vanessa's eyes)

Came to say, that I've moved
I see your face, you don't approve
Guess you could say that I'm already gone

(Just because they are still together now doesn't mean they haven't broken up in the past, and at the time Vanessa wrote about it; and now after realising what a great song it is- deciding to play it for us)

Well you'll always be a golden boy
I'm the summer girl that you enjoy
Some melodys are best left un--

(See- its present tense again... ‘I'm the summer girl that you enjoy’... so he's still enjoying her and they are still together)

I feel the time pass away
But in my songs you'll aways stay
Don't need for you to tell me I'm the one
Oh, no, no, don't need for you to tell me
I'm the one
You'll never know that I was
The one

(And although she feels like sometimes she is wasting her time with him as he refuses to commit, she knows that they are meant to be, so she is prepared to stick around because she doesn't need for him to tell her anymore cause she knows and it’s all she needs)

--------------------------------------------

So any thoughts???? You don't have to agree because I have a feeling most of you won't but that's cool. Just thought I would throw my ten cents in :-)

Since "Dark Carnival" is a slight reworking of the original song "Carnival", it would be necessary to get an understanding of the meaning of that song. 8)

Still talking about "The One" maybe it is about John Mayer, cause I have to say that John Mayer is "a gifted son" and she refered to him as a bad-breaker-upper, which could fall with the line "You'll never know that I was the one", it's really just speculation, but I don't really think it is about Stephen-are they even still together?  I thought "Best Behavior/Only You" was about Stephen, well....yeah....so....um.....okay....

hm.. this is what i think of put your hands on me...

"first saw you at the video exchange" remember a while ago when V did that E3 video game expo thing and sung a new version of dark carnival? i think shes referring to that.. and that is where she first met whoever the song is about

"i know my heart and it will never change" before she started dating stephan she was saying she didnt want to date people in "the business" cos they dont play by the rules.

"this temp work will be alright if you call me" im sure that re-doing a really old song of hers for a video game must not have been where vanessa wanted to be in her carrer, so she may be referring to that temp work and how it wouldnt be so bad if she spent time with whoever it was about

"we cross the deepest oceans, ____ across the sea, and if you dont believe me just put your hands on me, and all the constelations, shine down on you and me.." i think the rest of the song after the chorus sounds like shes describing what its like being with that person, and how touching eachother.. being close , brings her mind on a journey.. like she can do anything, shes invincible, climbing tibetan mountains, shes in paradise-type thing.

and thats my 2 cents. =)

I think that A Thousand Miles is about her wanting drugs really bad but her dealer is out of town and she's saying she would walk A Thousand Miles to see him or her.

Twilight could be about an acid trip. "Peel away and choose to see with such a different sight."

i think swindler is about a guy that came on the vanessa and wanted to have a sexual relationship but was already married and she also knew the guy well like he was her friend for a couple of year.  and the guy only was talking to her for sex

Dark Carnival is a tricky one to interpret. This may not be Vanessa's meaning when she wrote it, but I personally think that in the song, V is singing about a guy she likes, who is in love (or lust) with another girl. This girl is really bad for him, like a vampire   (metaphorically speaking), she has a hold of him ("...bringing you to your knees", "she wants wht is hers before the light"). This is hurting the narrator (V or whoever's perspective she is singing from), as shown in the lyrics: "Bring me a remedy".
"Should never have looked so close... I can see all your cracks"- she really thought she could love this person, but now she has seen his weakness, his fatal flaw, and regrets having ever have seen it...

Does anyone agree?   :?:

I still think that Private Radio is about masturbation.  She has insomnia because she misses her man and...

If you make the music terms metaphors for sex (something Vanessa has done in the past) then it makes sense.

And, no I am not some crazy pervert.   This was just my first interpretation of the song, and the lyrics seem to go along with this idea very well.

But I'm not saying you're wrong or anything.
