Title: Do you prefer NESSAholics.com to be Flash, HTML, or both.

I like Flash because of all of the nifty stuff that can be done, but I really prefer to have both for users with slower connections.

both, but i think there should be a main page that says "HTML Low Bandwidth" or "Flash High Bandwidth" up front to give people the preference...  :D

Yes.  You are correct.

*Adds to list*  :)

Well, I actually had that on my list already, but I've been lazy about it.

*Puts a star next to it on the list*

both... maybe but updating 2 sites would be a pain me thinks...

And even though the look+feel of the flash site is tight.... and dont hate me; but if I have the option I like good HTML, for one thing, I'm a rightclickwhore. I've never liked how Flash takes all the useablilty options out of a site.

I had a hard time voting between Flash and both, I went for both. Although both would be a maintainence nightmare, but there are still too many computer illiterates out there without the plugins for flash (unless they're shipping them with IE nowadays?). The speed isn't a problem really, and there are hardley any modem users left out there. Damn! I just changed my own mind, flash only.

Idea: How about a small HTML splash page which lists the recent updates (or a popup link on the existing intro page). Then slowdem users could surfer the forum and that page and only need to load up the flash site, when they spot something they like the look of. Plus you'd only need to maintain one HTML page (which could even be database driven with little effort). eh? eh? Well I thought it was clever. What do you think?

Because my home computer is crap, and slow as hell, I went with HTML.  Though the flash site looks way cool when I go to it at work, haha, fast computers are goooood.

Flash:
- Pros
  - Small download for animated gfx.
  - Plugin ships with all major browsers. (IE, NS)
- Cons
  - Not supported on all platforms.  Unix support is spotty and usually downrev.
  - Recent security advisories involving the Flash plugin.  Someone didn't audit their code very well...
  - Flash within an HTML page doesn't scale.  A 800x600 Flash movie looks fine in a low res, but is dinky on someone who has a 1600x1200 display.
  - Accessability: screenreaders + Flash == wha?  Not like I expect many visually impaired people visit this site, but it's another thing to look at.
  - Inability to be indexed by search engines.  Content within a Flash file will not be found by Google and the rest.

HTML:
- Pros
  - Standard fairly well supported on all modern browsers.  Still a few oddities in more recent specificiations, but they're all fairly close.
  - Can achieve almost the same results with HTML/CSS as with Flash in the realms of basic rollovers and popups.
  - Much easier to style and layout dynamic data appropriately.
- Cons
  - Vector based images are larger in GIF/JPG/PNG than Flash.
  - Old browsers might handle the Flash better than a current HTML/CSS layout.

Just my $.02.

I will go with both. While the flash site is pretty cool, I like the HTML for the home computer because the 56K loading time for flash stuff sucks lol.

Blah... it looks nice.

But no.....

Sometimes I like to use Links to surf the web.

Also... right clicking is a problem. If I am surfing on my laptop which is really slow, then things are downright unbearable.

I agree, Flash looks cool. But, only if you want this to be a page designed to be looked at once. Like a brochure.

If you expect people to use it often, put usability above pretiNESS.

i have DSL so i don't care the speed connection but
for those who still have a 56 k or other slow connections both would be better

I have cable internet, but I still prefer HTML.  I'm not one who's interested in flashy gimmicks... I'd rather see what I want to see, straight and to the point   :)

Especially on informational websites, if there is a text-only option, I always select it (it also makes for better printing).

probably both, until modems become as absolete as 8-track tapes.

I voted both.....but not really sure what that involves for you guys behind the scenes.
