MISSY HIGGINS
I know there are posts about her in the AsS thread but its been about a month since we added her into the thread and I'm afraid that know one will be taking notice so I have decided to make a thread up just for her :D
Missy Higgins is a 21 year old Australian songwriter/musician/singer (as she has stated).

Missy won a radio competition when she was 17, the prize was a record deal.
Instead of recording it then and there, she instead chose to travel around Europe after leaving school and worked on her songwriting.
Her first EP was released November last year and was successful on many local radio stations but didnt really pick up in the mainstream charts.
But Missy's 2nd release SCAR EP was picked up by alot of major radio stations and music programs, with alot of hard work and touring Missy managed to nab herself a number one hit on the Australian music chart.

She writes some brilliant songs, yeh there is a new song on her website everyday. Song 9 off her cd is up today called The River so there is not many more to go but if u go to videos then there are a few you can watch.

Last night I went to the Missy Higgins concert at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney and it rocked so much.
She is such a lovely and nice girl.....
Heres what happened:
My friend Cathy and I arrived at the hotel at about 6:55pm, we went into the part of the hotel where Missy would be playing and there was hardly anyone there so I though 'you beauty" but it was filled up by about 7:20pm.
She had an opening act, Im not really sure what his full name was, it was Josh somebody and he was pretty good.
He played acoustic versions of about 6 of his songs I think.
Then Missy Higgins came on at about 8:10pm and opened the show with Falling then continuted on with All for believing.
I dont have the set list but she sang a whole lot of songs from her new cd along with a cover song called Moses which was pretty cool and also a few songs that I hadnt heard before.
There was a line in Moses that goes something like "with my best friend who is queer" when she sang that first everyone kinda giggled.
She explained that All for believing was the first song that she was proud to admit that she had written and it took 1 year to write They weren't there.
She said that thats far to long for anything to take :)
Her song Ten days was written when she was away from her family and she was feeling lonely.
On the stage she played the keyboard to my right and she played guitar right infront of me, I could of touched her she was that close but I didnt haha.
I didnt take many photos of her on guitar because I didnt want to blind her with my flash but I did get some pretty good photos and I took videos of Scar and also my other favorite Don't Ever.
When she came back from playing the guitar, she started to fiddle with the stool she was sitting on it and she said "sorry Im just afraid that im going to fall off this thing" so she was pulling on it and all of a sudden she pulled the top of it off and laughted "oh so thats why!!".
They didnt bring out a new one for her so she had to try and fix it. As she got back on it she kinda nearly fell back and went "oh I hope I dont fall off it but if I do it will look pretty funny".
She rocked so much and was funny, she started to play the piano for the start of Any day now and messed it up because she had it on the wrong setting on the keyboard and she went "oh bugger" and started to laugh then said sorry.
My favorite songs of the night was probably The Cactus that found the beat and Scar because everyone was really getting into it and had fun when she did it.
It was so small and there werent overly that many people there so I had a blast.
My friend Cathy and I were right up front so that was even cooler and we didnt have to deal with any screaming teenie boppers because it was over 18's.
Missy did an encore of about 4 songs I think and endind it with The Special two which was really nice.
She only had one other musician on stage with her for a few songs but was by herself for most of the concert.
He was from her brothers old band and she explained that she used to try and get into clubs to see them play with loads of make up on and clothes for a person about twice her age.
I loved this concert and it was probably the best one that I have been to because I went with a reat friend, it was small and Missy Higgins rocked.
My friend is bringing over all the bits and peices so I can get the photos and videos onto my computer from her digital camera so that might happen sometime over the weekend I hope.
I had a great time and cant wait to go to another one :)
Oh I also brought a cool Missy Higgins t-shirt, its grey and has a pink picture of missy sitting on a lounge with a guitar and Missy Higgins written on it <3

Today - Thursday - her album was certified platinum.
It was also announced today that Missy is one of the final five nominees for "Best Video", "Best Single", "Best Pop Release" and "Best Female Artist" at this year's ARIA Awards. She will perform live on the prestigious award show when it is broadcast on October 17.
And I hope that she wins EVERY SINGLE ONE!! Missy is so 8)
So while I was at my friends house I was sneaky and went into her room armed with a cassette tape and recorded Missy on the radio, hehe.
Missy is so totally funny and said that she HATES what she is wearing in the Scar video. She reckons that she looks like a nanna haha.

It was so hal-eri-arse today, I had the radio on thismorning and all of a sudden Scar came on, well Ayden 1 yr old nephew) and I started to dance to it (after I turned it up fully) and he was just sitting in my arms waving his legs about as I sang the lyrics hehe.
Then all of a sudden he was going ahhhhh ahhh. My guess is he was trying to sing along.
It was so cute.
So i went home and got my CD and played Scar all day for him, I think he just likes the start of it because he kept smiling but he can sure tell the difference between Scar and another song.

Missy won Best Pop release last night at the ARIAs <3

I got to see her in person scurry up the red carpet and I was at the awards show with Aaron so it was totally amazing being there to see her win her 1st award at the arias and perform for the 1st time there.

Random thoughts from Missy Higgins
*Her name: It's short for Melissa. I've always been called Missy; I hate "Mel"; I really don't feel like it suits me.
*Being on the radio: It's always weird. I was in the car the other day when my song came on. My friend quickly changed the channel and I was like "What the hell did you do that for? Its my song".
*Her inspiration: It usually hits me when I need to get something out of my system and theres no one to talk to. So I write a song, It's cheaper than therapy!
*Her mum: She's tone deaf. It's hilarious when she tries to sing along to my songs.
*The upcoming tour: It'll be fun to play my own shows and not be supporting. And I love being in a new place every day.

Missy attended the Australian MTV VMA's lastnight and performed 'The Special Two'.

I didn't even know they released The Sound of White in the US until Vulture told me Missy said they did at the show 8O. I need to pay more attention to this thread :lol:.

Does anyone know if the US Version has a hidden track after "Sound of White"? I saw the track listed as being 9:06 long, and I know from the AUS version the track itself is only 4:50 8O.

If you add the track time for They Weren't There, which follows TSOW on the
Aussie version, you get a total of 8:58 so that could explain it :wink: Casualty is
the other track not on the US version; it would make a total of exactly 9:06!

Cathie Glassby who did the artwork for Missy's album also received a nomination for Best Cover Art.

Yeah, she's great! I saw her open for Jason Mraz last year.
At one of my recent shows, a guy bought a cd & told me how much he enjoyed my set, saying I reminded him of Missy. I told him that was a huge compliment! :D

I saw her last Thursday night at the Gold Coast Exhibition & Entertainment
Centre; 19 numbers in the set-list including a cover of Powderfinger's 'These
Days'. Very impressive line-up and worth every bit of the ticket price to get
an explanation from Melissa of the inspiration behind 'The Sound of White'; It
takes on a whole new dimension once you know what this song is about ;-)

I know Katie and a few others tried to get me to listen to her in the past but damn I have been missing out! Her music is fantastic! I wish I can catch her on tour here but no where really close besides making a trip to Park West again Brian lol.......You should see her B!

Now you know what its like for all us NESSAholics down under that have
only ever had the one tour to hook-up with recently and for most of us,
just been able to take in 2 shows. On the flip side we have nowhere here
that would get as cold as it was in Park West for you guys 'cept Canberra

That's odd you say that D, I actually saw Missy here tonight. The show was awesome. Missy is really charismatic in person and she's got one of the strongest and purest singing voices I've ever heard live. There was so much energy and she is kind of like Anna Nalick (I'd almost say she's a bit better) in that she sounds exactly like she does on CD if not better because of the live atmosphere. I was very impressed.
I managed to snag a setlist because I am awesome like that (that and the fact I was there like 45 minutes before anyone else showed up so I was front row -- sitting on a huge beanbag no less!):

It was pretty cool by the end of the show everyone was standing up by the stage, even though it was a seated venue. I thought that was a novel touch. I didn't really stay around too much after the show but I'm sure she probably came out. I left after about a half hour. I'd definitely see her again!

Sadly, I don't remember too much about them since it was the first time I heard them. :(
I know one was a song she did for a movie soundtrack but she said it didn't make the soundtrack. I forget which one that is.
You can find Dusty Road and The Battle on youtube from other US shows. :)

Like a A-hole I missed her show when she was in Nashville. I regret is so much because She is now my favorite artist. I have to say she is the most talented artist to surface in the 2000's and I can't believe I missed her. I hope she comes back around here. I like the new hair she is sporting! She is a little tom boy-ish but there she looks great!

Yeah, she is definitely awesome.
One thing I really like about her live shows is she almost always changes the setlist, so if you were to see multiple shows you most likely would get to see 2-3 different songs each night. That is something I appreciate these days when most artists play the same setlist every night.

So I saw Missy Higgins last weekend here at the Pabst Theater. The show was incredible. I'm leaning towards top 3 in all of the concerts I've seen. The venue was no flash photography (which was supposed to be no photography, but so many people brought their cameras that all security really could do was tell people not to use flash after they did it eleven billionty times during Justin Nozuka).

This is How it Goes was on the setlist, as was They Weren't There. Missy did All For Believing instead of This is How it Goes and switched They Weren't There for Night Minds. I didn't get a setlist, but someone who did was nice enough to let me sneak a look at it since I wanted to remember the songs.
Missy seemed to be in a really good mood and was hitting great notes left and right. The running banter was at a minimum, other than her tales of visiting the Milwaukee Art Museum on Lake Michigan and seeing random "green drunk people" in the streets on her way back from the museum (apparently the vogue this year was to celebrate St. Patrick's Day all week). Missy considered these to be the best, and worst, Milwaukee has to offer.
It was awesome hearing Blind Winter live, and the Learning to Fly cover was incredible. Missy and the entire band really jammed out on Warm Whispers, too. In the encore tally column, there was no encore. Missy played almost an hour and a half, Justin Nozuka played for an hour, and Lenka played for a half hour.
I did get to meet Missy after the show, and I apologized on behalf of the random green drunk people. As I said, the venue was no flash, and I was just using my phone so these pictures aren't great, but some pictures are better than none, yes?

I've been told and told how fantastic she is, now. I saw her like 5 times when she opened for Anna and although I thought she was good, I wasn't all crazy about her. I have friends coming who are there Justin, me for Lenka and them for Missy so I have to stay. I just hope I'm not overly impressed and going to be kicking myself for skipping out early last month. I'll let you know.

Missy has really grown into her own in the past few years, keeping the musical and vocal talent she always had, while continuing to expand and grow her stage presence.
