Title: Reasoning test
Post by: zurielshimon on November 17, 2004, 09:13:36 am
You get one piece of fruit with the box lunch.  You can have either a banana or a plum.  You have chosen a plum.

Select the conclusion based on valid reasoning.

1. You can have a banana too.
2. You cannot have a banana too.
3. There is not enough information to make a sound conclusion.

Well, in my experience with the dining hall, you are only allowed to take one piece of fruit.  One piece of visible fruit that is.  So put the plum in your pocket, and carry out the banana, and there, you have both.

Yes, yes, I'm weird.  But the question is, did you just figure that out, or have you known all along?

The way I saw it was that it says you can have one from the fruit box, however it didn't say you chose the plum from the fruit box, you could've taken it from a dumpster for all I know, thus allowing you to have something also from the fruitbox, as well as the dumpster........or something

The poll is set to close in a few weeks, and once it does, I will post the correct answer exactly as worded by the source of this question.

Bah.  This is a lame duck questions.

1) We don't know if the person has chosen a boxed lunch at ALL
2) we don't know if the person has chosen a single boxed lunch
3) We don't know if the person is choosing his or her fruit based on the boxed lunch.  Maybe it's completely unrelated info.

The answer has to be "Not enough information."  Making us wait a few "weeks" to tell us it's a lame duck question is silly.

There are some situations in life where you just have to "play along".  No movie of fiction (and most based on true stories) can be enjoyed without a little bit of faith that the depicted events could actually occur.  This question was part of a general listening and comprehension test that tests for the retention and application abilities of technology students.
