Title: ready for a new video, and i don't understand..
Post by: desperado on December 13, 2004, 07:44:46 am
I am really ready for a new video. Especially a "Private Radio" video. Are we getting a new video? Anytime soon? Does anyone know? I think it's time. The White Houses video premiered just a little over four months ago. Maybe I am just impatient.

Also, I don't understand how at amazon.com most everyone gives her album 5 stars, and Harmonium's average is 4.5, but she isn't selling well. I guess there are more people not rating than rating. I hope this doesn't discourage Vanessa.

But I'm definately ready for some new creativity put into a video.

The problem is that sales aren't linked to quality. I could name you a hundred 4 or 5 star non-pop records on Amazon that are selling a fraction of even Harmonium. Sales are, more than anything else, linked to promotion. It doesn't matter (in a purely commercial sense) whether everybody who listens to the album thinks it's great, if hardly anybody hears it. People are generally too lazy to find good music, if the media doesn't drop it into their laps, they won't bother with it.

She said on Saturday that the new video and single will be out in January. She said it would be either "Private Radio" or another song. I recommended "Who's To Say" to her and her assistant.

I'm just glad she is mentioning that she will be coming out with a new single. People need to know these things so they can request to their radio stations, etc.  :)

I don't think that Private Radio would be the best choice for the next single.  After the White houses disaster I think Who's to Say is really the only song on Harmonium that would do well on the mainstream radio.

They'd have to cut it, though. It's much too long to hold an indifferent listener's attention.

That's what people said about White Houses.  "Oh, it's so catchy..."  catchy schmetchy.

Nat: You're right, they would have to cut it down a little, it's almost 5 minutes long.  But, ATM and OD weren't that much shorter.

Post by: desperado on December 13, 2004, 06:45:07 pm
it definately should be PRIVATE RADIO. Who's To Say is amazing, but we've come to learn that Vanessa's success with radio and a general audience comes from something catchy. That is Private Radio. I like them both, but I always listen to Private Radio. It's just fun to listen to. I think a general audience would rather hear it. Who's To Say is slower than Pretty Baby, and that didn't do well. But who knows. Everyone I've talked to loves Who's To Say. I just say if it were up to me, I honestly believe Private Radio would be more successful and grab more people's attention.

I think it will be Private Radio and then San Francisco. They are the most radio friendly songs and its easier to do promo on something that is catchy and radio friendly. Some good video for Private Radio and alot alot of air play will bost the albums sales.

personally I think private radio would be the better choice when thinking about album sales, it's incredibly catchy and will probably be a big hit. on the other hand it's not my favourite and I would really like to see a video for C'est la Vie or something. that would be interesting.

I really think "Whose to Say" would have the greatest potential for radio success! Then, to me, the next best choice would be "Private Radio", then "San Francisco", then "Afterglow".

I think both Private Radio and Who's To Say have a good radio sound. Musically, I think Private Radio has the edge; I think WTS is better suited for the radio lyrically, however.

Well, I'd love SAN FRANCISCO to be a single.. but we know it's impossible.. I dont know why, but we all know that " PRIVATE RADIO and WHO'S TO SAY " will be the next singles, So, I'm not sure but that's what seems to be................ I love San Francisco and I'd love it to be the next single.... It's the best song of Vanessa.... so... but I think it's too hard to be one single... Maybe I'm wrong and we all see a video for it... I hope....

Afterglow is a good song and I think it's more easier it to be a single than San Francisco, because I've heard that AFTERGLOW would be the 4th single... but that's also not for sure

The thing about amazon is the only ppl who can be bothered to write reviews either really liked it or really hated it. Otherwise, they're amazon geeks who write reviews cos they're wannabe newspaper critics. That's why most things on amazon are 4 stars. I think they shd change it to an easy IMDb-style rating system, but then most stuff wd get 3 stars and they'd lose money.

I'm thinking "Private Radio" would have been the first single as originally planned, but it's a difficult song for Vanessa to perform live and promote.  It would have meant a no-go for the acoustic tour.  "Private Radio" is a definite band song.  She would need either a backing track or a back-up singer for the harmonies that are pretty integral to the song.
Taking into consideration the influence of Gwen Stefani's album on the current music scene and the new conservatism in media that helped stifle "White Houses" from going higher than about #23 on the mainstream radio chart, I would have gone with "Private Radio" as the debut, "Who's to Say" second, and then maybe "White Houses" in the third single slot, depending on the receptiveness toward the first two singles.
I just hope that if they do go with "Private Radio" as a single that they will commit to making a great, smartly edited video to go along with it.

I agree with shades, who brings up several excellent points, including the many backing vocal parts. Maybe the WH single was a lob, with A&M knowing full well that the album would be stomped by U2 and Eminem, etc., and preferred to wait till after Xmas to release the next single(s).

That's my hope.  Private Radio is a killer single, and maybe Who's To Say.
I'm guessing that SF would do little if anything as a single.

With a band, PR will be a mind-blowing live song!  Here's hoping....

OK.. I'll try to explain it in English because AVRIL ON LIFE ( Uma Avril na Vida ) it's a slang from Brazil.. it means

Vanessa is not a Avril
So, I meant that Vanessa is not like Avril

CLAMICAS Or EMMY.. Help me to explain it

" Eu confio na Vanessa, porque ela não é uma Avril da vida "... Please..

Private Radio will definately be a good choice. It's the catchiest song on the whole album, and in my opinion, White Houses shouldn't have been the first single...after her 2nd single, though, she'll probably either release Who's to Say or Annie....

I don't care what song she releases next because I like 'em all, but I'm guessing it'll probably be Private Radio, like the rest of you.

The weird thing is that it's another acoustic tour.  I love V acoustic, don't get me wrong.  But as I pointed out a couple of months ago, unless V has magically come up with an acoustic version of "Private Radio" so she can play it on tour, it probably won't be her second single.  The thought of "Private Radio" not being her second single has me somewhat scared.

I suppose she can do the backing track thing.  I'm not sure how well that would work out.

The way the tour dates are shaping up is interesting in itself. It makes me wonder what exactly is going on... plus if she was going to put out a single before the tour, she'd have done a video by now...and thus we'd have known about it by now. So things are just kind of weird  :?

Oh!  Its another acoustic tour?  This I didn't know. (i was hoping for the band this time, lol!  It was nice when she could come out from behind the piano for a couple songs) Well yeah, then that would be rather strange for Private Radio to be the single.  Meh.

I also want Private radio, but I love Afterglow, Papa (this song is not a comercial song   ) and San Francisco. I think Private Radio is a precious song. I would define it like the Harmonium´s "Unsung". It is very similar and has a similar ending too.

So you've noticed that too?  Every time I hear the last note of "Private Radio", I always think how "ATM" would fit right after it.  Either that or "WTSHNN".  One way or the other, "HAWBTW" is not the next song. :?

But the problem about WTSHNN is that: Vanessa didn´t compose this song, it´s an U2 song, and it was a single, so I think WTSHNN cannot be a single.

"WTSHNN" could be a Vanessa single if she wanted it to be.  Just look at Limp Bizkit's "Behind Blue Eyes" or whoever it is that just released "(Another Brick in the) The Wall".  What I mean is that it's a cover song.  As beautiful as "WTSHNN" is, I also doubt she'll release it as a single.  I hate that it didn't make the album cut for whatever reason tho it was supposed to have.  What I meant, however, was that it should be the next song on the album after "Private Radio" because that's where it was going to be. :(

And yes, since we're on the topic of covers, Avril has recorded a surprisingly reverent version of Bob Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door".  I have it on mp3 and I'd be glad to zap anyone here with it if you would like. 8)

For one I think it would be "radio friendly" & it's one of her more fun/upbeat songs & have you all seen her do this song live?! It's freaking amazing! So it would be a fun single for her to perform. She's a woman in secret.
She's all I need but she's all I fear

Yup... I think she'll release a single, but no video.... But the good is the video because I'm from a shit called Brazil, and in this shit doesn't sell singles... only Albums

For those who haven't been in the music for Harmonium thread yet, they are thinking that Annie might be the next single cuz the sheet music is now on the musicnotes website. Now that I think about it, I think that would be an awesome single.
