She is quite a character...I LOVE what she said in her journal here:

"Most importantly, though, i wish you all the best, and hope you have fun living, breathing, clicking on things, petting things, talking to things, hanging things up to dry(an underrated fun activity...) and loving things...  hip hip hooray"

That made my day.

And her video for "Us" is really frickin' cool.   :D

Regina is very talented with a very distrinctive voice and style. I find her music very quirky and interesting. Spektor's songs are like little stories.

Here is a link to a performance by Regina.

I first heard Regina Spektor on an advert that plays before a movie like... all the time. For some TV network. They use the song Us. Thats all I've heard, but I feel I have to download Fidelity now, because of iTunes.

Ok so, Nicole is obssessed with Regina. She made me take a listen. I thought the music was fantastic but wasn't crazy about her voice. It seemed to me like that in a lot of her songs she's pretending but I guess she's just having fun.

So I spent last week with Nicole and we went to see Regina in LA with Jessica at Avalon (I should post our pic) The place was sold out!! She played on a grand or maybe it was a baby grand nonetheless it was cool...  I love to watch the crowd, enjoy, and sing along and just have so much fun.

Then we went to Cane's in San Diego, where we saw V some years ago. We were right up front, of course. I was very impressed with Regina when during the last song someone in the front row passed out. She stopped the song, and asked security to help the girl. The dude was just standing there and she was calling him an asshole for not helping. It was great. Then she apologized for stopping and said she was scared and didn't know what to do. Then she was all, where was I? Oh a little bag of cocaine

Yeah so I do enjoy some of the songs, about 10 haha. But the rest not so much.

Nicole, I hope you're happy that you finally got me!!   I've been waking up singing Regina songs and they stay in my head all day!! Thanks.  :?

There's a pic of Regina and I in my myspace.

And here's a few photos. (http://s16.photobucket.com/albums/b40/smpd24/Regina%20Spektor%20San%20Diego/?action=view&current=1163197396.pbw)

Yea, I can't figure out what she means by 32 either. The song makes it sound like the speaker is the 32nd son of some king and queen.  He feels left out and forgotten because there have been 31 before him and there are even more to come, '32 still counts!'  but wow my obsession has rapidly moved on to chemo limo. I'm in awe of how easily/quickly I became a huge fan!

I am SO glad that Vanessa posted about her, otherwise I would still be missing out on some seriously good stuff! I'm in awe of how she can write all these songs that are like little stories about other people, but she seems so attached to the characters and their feelings...she's such a gifted lyricist.

wtf? clearly whoever wrote that has no clue what they're talking about. Let's see, um Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Tori Amos, Alicia Keys...  I guess it's cool vanessa was referenced out of all the possibilities though. haha so dumb though.

I saw her twice and didn't really know the music so Nicole could totally answer this better. I will do my best.

She did play with a band.
She played the guitar on "That Time" maybe another, I forget.
She explained a couple songs and introduced, well pointed out that her family was there in San Diego.
She was fun. Totally doesn't take compliments well. She deflects.
One person asked her to marry him and she said that, that seemed to be the question of the tour. She said she would make a terrible wife.
She was fun. I enjoyed the show.
Nicole could totally tell you the setlist or if you get to listen to that recording but here's some of what I think she played, in no order.

Samson
Hotel Song
Apres Moi
That Time
Fidelity
Better
Carbon Monoxide
The Flowers
Us

wow thanks for the info  :D I really want to meet her now, she seems intriguing to say the least.  That's a bummer she deflects compliments, because the minute I get to speak with her, I'll be showering her with 'em. I suppose I'll feel awful afterwards, but whatever.  Do you remember if she played "Chemo Limo?" its about a lady with cancer, if that helps.. thats my favorite of hers, no contest. I hope she plays it on her next tour! Looks like she mainly focused on songs from Begin To Hope for this year's sets.

I think it is out of print, so it will be hard to find it at affordable prices. You may want to check Ebay, because it does show up there now and then.

CD Baby used to have it and supposedly they will get it back in stock, but I am not sure how soon if ever it will be back in stock at CD Baby.

i decided: Regina's songs are like little candies...
Lady is like a peppermint
and Sailor is like a Laffy Taffy
and like candy, you can eat, or listen, to the songs all the time and not get sick of them. Each one is unique and sweet in its own way..

...now 3EB songs are the total opposite...
3eb songs are like  big juicy steaks. They are delicious, only when you crave it. But when you do, they just hit the spot. BUT you rarely crave those songs because they are so hard core.

you know what i mean?

it was quite amazing.
she reminds me so much of tori amos, it's not even funny.
However, the crowd was packed with either hard core fans or really old people who didn't know her.
I was rocking out to THAT TIME and so was everyone around me that the guy behind me was getting really mad. I can see where he was coming from, but it's a concert. Besides that, it was really fun.
She was a little spooked though, she said so herself. The auditorium was packed and everyone was screaming out which song she should sing next. It was a little intimidating.

Regina Spektor - Baby Jesus Lyrics

you know that statue
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
last night I saw the owner kiss it
and whisper in its ear
I was walking home from walgreen's
and he did not hear me see him
and on the
very very next morning
all the subway cars were hallelu-leluing
welcome back the baby king, the baby king
all the believers they were smiling
and winking at each other
I could honestly say I was scared for my life

they said, all the non-believers they get to eat dirt
and the believers get to spit on their graves...

you know that statue
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
they've been showing it on the news
it was thirty times its size
with a megaphone and a heart-shaped bruise
it was hovering in the skies
and all the
subway cars were hallelu-lelu-leluing, hallejuah
welcome back the baby king, the baby king
all the believers they were smiling
and winking at each other
I could honestly say I was scared for my life

they said, all the non-believers they get to eat dirt
and the believers get to spit on their graves...
believe!...

you know that statue
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
when I woke up I ran and bought it
and locked it in my closet
with a little bread and water
and a flashlight and a first aid kit til he grows

maybe you should just send me an IM on AIM and we can file share....
within the last few days, I downloaded so many live regina concerts and obscure songs..
I'm trying to get them all, and I'm so very close..

if you want any song, just ask, I'll see if I have it and send it to you.
and as of right now, I  currently have 4 versions of loveology...
they're all pretty good I think, so you might as well have them all :D

Regina is a little too artsy fartsy at times for my tastes. I saw her live once as an opening act and felt like screaming, "God dammit, stop playing with your voice and just sing the fucking song."

She is pretty endearing though, I'll give her that.

She is definitely the most kick ass singer-song writer the world has ever known [besides V and that goes without saying because I am a member of this forum, aren't I ;)] She is very strange, though, and has a lot of singing quirks which throws a lot of people off, but she's a complete freaking genius and you should give all of her music [not just songs from her newest album "Begin to Hope" {ex: Fidelity, On the Radio, Better} for then you would all be dubbed "Begin to Hope"-ers] a good listen.

recommended listens from 1st album ["11:11" {Self released}]
Marry Ann
Buildings
Love Affair
2nd album ["Songs" {Self released}]
Samson
Prisoners
Consequence of Sounds
3rd album ["Soviet Kitsch" {major label}]
Us
The Flowers

Regina's songs are all extremely simple, that's why there's so many of them. lol Vanessa's are a bit more complex in terms of arrangement.

Um, no? There are so many of them because she can write songs about anything, not just ones about things that happen in her life. In fact, almost none of her songs are autobiographical.
And Vanessa's songs are in no way more complex. I can play almost all of V's stuff and all Reg songs (that are available. It's hard to transcribe 130 songs lol!). Their writing styles are very similar, their influences are similar. Both have been playing classical piano for... forever basically, and draw a lot of playing style from Bach and Mozart in particular (I can hear that too). They're both even Russian-Jews (and wouldn't you know it, so am I)! If anything, to be honest, Reg's music may be a little more developed than Vanessa's, or more experimental at least. V's done her experiments (of course! She comes up with some weirdness ;)) but... I dunno; Reg seems more outgoing in her lyric writing and singing [have you heard those sounds!]
As for arrangment, what do you mean? There are two verses a chorus and a bridge. It's not really complex for any musician, and most contemporary songs repeat (as well as V's) so, I don't really understand what you mean there.
I may seem like I'm offended... and maybe I am lol! I've been a die hard Spektor fan since 2001 (I was an awesome 6th grader!), and got into V around 2004, so Reg is like my baby *cuddles Soviet Kitsch*

Uh... way to go off on a rant and argue points that wasn't even brought up in what I said. Jesus christ.

Um, yes, Regina has a shit load of songs, and they have to be simple in order for her to remember how to play them.

And are you serious? Their writing styles are not similar at all. Regina is much more alternative - she uses her voice completely differently and messes around with it a lot, and her style with the piano is much more percussive.

Where as Vanessa is more straight up pop, and can actually sing through a song without feeling the need to play around with her goddamn voice all the time.

Why are you even bringing up the non-autobiographical aspect of Regina's songs, I wasn't even talking about the subjects of her writing.

And jesus christ, arrangement as in what they're actually playing on the piano, I wasn't talking about verses, or choruses or song formulas. I think I know how songs are written jack ass.  :?

In conclusion, you're stupid. Piss off. I've been playing the piano for 13 years (I wrote 12 before and I just turned 21, so it's 13 now, I keep forgetting, heh) and study at a music school, and also have the ability to recognize simple writing when I see it.

Also, I don't care how long you've been a fan of Regina's, that's the most retarded thing to brag about for any fan of a musician.

That's cool, I saw her when she opened up for the Dresden Dolls 3 or 4 years ago, I forget, and that's how I got into her. It was a good show. Haven't seen her since - lol, I hear bad things about her shows now after Begin to Hope was released because of all the people that end up going.

At her last show in Cleveland a couple of guys stormed the stage while she was playing and she got really freaked and could barely finish her encore. :?

That seems really funny to me. I suppose it's true. But don't you think if you wrote a complex song you would likely still remember it because of all the mental energy you put into it? And sometimes all I need to remember is the beginning of a piano song and it's like my hands know the rest.

but oh yea I just remember reading a regina quote where she said she's actually written tons more songs than she has recorded, but it's just been too many for her to remember. wow i guess that settles that

and I agree, Regina's piano is simple percussion most of the time and vanessa incorporates many many more classical elements. There are maybe 3 regina songs that show off any advanced piano at all. When I was first listening to her I assumed she was self taught.

I've been playing for 13 too~ stopped taking lessons a few years ago and have been writing since. You probably know a hell of a lot more about music than I do, at least in some respects.  I have a few of my songs uploaded... I would love to get some critique, if you're down for it?

What? I wasn't ranting, I just got defensive

And their writing styles are similar. Maybe not their newer stuff but their older songs, yes. Where the left hand will play the melody and the right hand just keeps it going by playing the same notes... does that make any sense? lol

and the way the hands "talk" to each other, playing the same notes with both hands at different times and it sounds like the keys are echoing. Just little things like that. I'm not saying, right off the bat listening to the songs you can hear similarities it takes a few times to pick it up I guess

So yeah, way to yell at me [I wasn't angry, so why are you?]

Regina and Vanessa shouldn't really be compared to each other. sure, regina does all the weird things like clicking, warblings w/e and vanessa just does straight up pop/alternative music. Both are great, both are AMAZING, let's leave it like that!  :)

I bumped into Regina's radio cut of 'Better' while working at Kookoo Vino
one afternoon. Thanks to her 'Alternate' classification, she recieves more
air play 'Down Under' on networks like JJJ that we play at work. All of the
props in this thread confirm what I've felt from the start. Regina ROCKS!!

Got home after an absolute whirlwind of a day where I was without my car
and had to walk in the rain; but I came home and stuck Ms Spektor's work
on and everything seemed alright. The brilliance in her music is distracting
(If a more concise use of 3min, 22sec. than 'Better' exists I'd   to hear it)

"Better" will rank in the Top 10 "Songs you can't get out of your head" for
a very long time me thinks; maybe it was just the very ordinary rain, but I
was in need of a melody to dry out to and 'Better' fitted the bill perfectly :-)

Quote
If I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all

Born like sisters to this world
In a town where blood ties are only blood
If you never say your name out loud to anyone
They can never ever call you by it

If I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all

You're getting sadder, getting sadder, getting sadder, getting sadder
And I don't understand, and I don't understand
But if I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all...

I just started listening to Regina last week and I absolutely love her. It's the only music I have been listening to since and I listen almost non-stop. I think I can say that I am already addicted. I love almost everything from Begin to Hope (except for That time, which is okay, but a little too repetitive for me). Apres moi is a gorgeous song and I am beginning to really like 20 years of snow, despite its obvious quirkiness. I haven't been able to listen to Soviet Kitsch that much (I got it 2 days ago), but I already love a few of the songs. Then to consider that she created over 700 songs (according to wikipedia)!!
That's amazing.

And not only does she make great music she seems to be a really great person as well. On youtube there is a whole series of live performances at something called Lollapalooza or something and in the middle of The Flowers (gorgeous song btw) she sees somebody in the audience get sick. She basically stops the entire song and lets the audience make a road toward the sick person so security can get to him/her. You can see that she is genuinely worried and I think that really shows how kind and considerate she is.
Now I want to see her live....... As if she is coming to the netherlands any time soon :(

I have been listening to her live performances lately andI heard that song for the first time yesterday. It's an odd song lyrically, but really good nonetheless. It's very honest and simple in a way and it really made a big impression on me.
I also like the "sit down class" lyrics for some weird reason, it takes the song from beautiful to extraordinary even though I can't really say why.
Human of the year is btw my current favourite, it's really haunting and powerful, but just about any new song that I hear by her is immediately at the top of my favourite songs list. She really is incredible.

Title: Re: Regina Spektor
Post by: Martin. on June 29, 2009, 05:04:26 am
I think "Genius Next Door" touches on suicide...dunno if the song is purely based on that. Need to have a few more listens, but she sings "if you just hold in your breath 'til you come back up again" ... I also think she's being sarcastic a little by calling him a genius because he doesn't sound like one at all ... But that part could be wrong as I haven't listened to it much.

Title: Re: Regina Spektor
Post by: Martin. on June 29, 2009, 05:30:39 am
Yeah, I get the impression that he was a bit of a loner and although he WAS a bit of a genius, she contradicts that by calling him foolish and stupid for what he did (committed suicide). So the lake is a place where all the kids swim, hang out, have sex in, etc. He goes in there to experience a different kind of orgasm - death. He takes his clothes off and drowns himself. He hopes his death will make him get noticed, but no one really gives a shit (she talks about the neighbours starting their cars & going to work, the kids waking up with hangovers, bin men emptying the bins which hold his clothes, etc - just carrying on with their lives, basically) and so it was all for nothing, pretty much.

Dunno if that helps or if it's right, but that's what I got from it.

I love it.

"Carbon Monoxide" is similar kind of...she talks about a couple who make a suicide pact.
