Okay, I admit... I straight jacked this idea from Evboard (http://www.evboard.com/showthread.php?t=28982). I thought it would be kind of fun.
When I read the topic about Evboard's music scene, it made me think about how I've really enjoyed posting here in the Other Musicians section because this board is really a hotbed for music, especially in representing independent or lesser-known artists. In addition to that, we have a unique group of musicians who actually post on this forum. I was curious to see which band/artist is reguarded by the people of this board as the most liked/best artist other than Vanessa Carlton, and here we are now.

Here's the deal...
There will be 4 brackets of 16 bands/artists each...64 in all. This will basically be run like the NCAA Tournament, except I don't care about RPI, stregnth of schedule, or any other random statistic, and YOU get to decide who wins :wink:.
The bands in the tournament were seperated into a top 32 (1-8 seeds) and bottom 32 (9-16 seeds). The top 32 bands/artists all had at least 100 replies to their respective threads, or are popular/board favorite artists who very well could have 100 posts eventually. The bottom 32 were chosen by overall thread popularity, notoriety, and general relation to the board. All seeding except for the #1 seeds (chosen on the basis of most replies to their respective threads) were assigned by a random drawing.
For the first round you will vote on two brackets this week (A Thousand Miles Bracket & White Houses Bracket) and two next week (Ordinary Day Bracket, Pretty Baby Bracket). Each voting session will last one week begining on Sunday at 12:00am and ending the following Saturday at 11:59pm (central time, since I'm running this :razz:). This will continue each week until we get all the way down to the final two (Survivor from the ATM/WH Bracket side against Winner from the OD/PB Bracket side) and crown a NESSAholics.com Forums Champion.
Your job is to vote in this thread or PM (http://forums.nessaholics.com/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=95) your votes to me for each artist battle. This is your chance to decide which band/artist is second banana to Vanessa Carlton on this board, so choose wisely. :wink:

You got it right :wink:. This is basically a forum "game" and poll wrapped into one.
We are voting on the first round of these two brackets this week, and then next week we will vote on the other two brackets. And we will keep voting down the brackets until only one/band artist remains and thus is declared (by me, lol) as the Best Band Not Vanessa Carlton, as designated by the forum users at NESSAholics.com :wink:.
It is single elimination format, and goes like a regular tournament bracket would. :)

That was a really really close call. I didn't like Shannon Thomas much at all. The lyrics didn't fit the melody to the point that it was actually annoying. But the only Antonique stuff I could find was that one track ("Won't Be Long") on her website that wasn't "necessarily the style she is currently working on for her new CD" which I liked even less.
Sort me out with some newer stuff and there's every chance that I'll change my vote :) (I'll have to download some more Shannon Thomas too though, to be fair)

Oops. If I had known then I would not have been so blunt in my criticism. Sorry!
But hopefully you can take solace from the fact that
a) Your music was good enough for me to presume that you were too famous to be posting on the same bulletin board as me.
b) I liked the other aspects of you music enough to vote you ahead of Antonique (who lots of people seem to like)
c) I didn't PM Brian to switch my vote (sorry Kat!), even after hearing recent Antonique material. That is to say, despite the one 'problem' I mentioned, I like you music more than Antonique's.
d) There are several other bands/artists in this poll that would lose my vote to you. Example: Linkin' Park.
e) I have the same 'problem' with a few of Vanessa's songs.
f) I am not a musician nor an authority on song writing. Unlike Eve Alacu who, judging from the quotes on your site, seems to think you're pretty rad.
So hopefully you won't hang yourself because one non-musician online didn't like one aspect of one of your songs. I don't think Antonique will be.

I'm really glad that you're not upset. Still I feel pretty bad. So I want to explain.
Firstly. No, I don't think you totally suck, at all! I would have made that completely clear if I'd have ever guessed you'd be reading my comments.
I listen to mainly heavy metal and instrumental electric guitar music. In those styles the lyrics are usually non-existant, not audible or meaningless. The music conveys the feeling, not the content of the lyrics (if any). This suits me fine, I've never liked lyrics, they get in the way.
This is strictly a personal taste and a minority one at that. I'm aware that a large proportion of artists and styles use the content of lyrics to convey emotion as well as the music. The singer songwriter 'style' being the most blatent example. In this case, melding the lyrics and the music is an extra complication in the song writing process which, almost invariably, will compromise the song in the eyes of people like me. For others, it will improve it.
My real life friends would tell you that it's a gripe I've had with numerous artists and bands. So it isn't something you'd want to consider taking on board as anything constructive. People like me simply aren't in your target market. What's annoying for me, improves the music in the eyes of others.
So there you have it :)
