Explosions have taken out the entire underground network and soon after (when everyone rushed to the buses), there were several explosions on buses. Now London is gridlocked and everyone is standing around in the streets unable to get anywhere. Hopefully there isn't going to be a grand finale :S

The radio is on about "at least 6" bus bombs. But who knows if that's true at this stage.

Yeah.. just watched his speech. He seems to think it's to disrupt the summit.. which I guess it has done, seeing as he's flying down to London now.
Lots of rumours about numbers of casualties etc. BBC 1 and ITV seem to have different numbers, so it seems nothing's really confirmed yet. We're leaving the tv on in the office in case anything else develops.

as Blair said, it was most likely to disrupt the summit. some reports were saying it had to do with London being awarded the Olympics, but it just seems too soon to have coordinated this type of attack.
Hopefully there wont be any more explosions and I hope everyone out there stays safe.

He said it was "particularly barbaric" it was timed to coincide with the G8 summit and he was returning to London.
An Islamist website has posted a statement - purportedly from al-Qaeda - claiming it was behind the attacks.
London's police chief Sir Ian Blair said traces of explosive had been found at one site.
He urged people to stay where they were and not to call emergency services unless it was a life-threatening situation.
Sir Ian said there had been "many casualties" but it was too early to put a figure to those killed or injured.
He reassured the public that an emergency plan was in place and the situation was "steadily coming under control".
Home Secretary Charles Clarke told reporters outside Downing Street: "The health services are in support to deal with the terrible injuries that there have been."
Scotland Yard said explosions have been reported at Edgware Road, King's Cross, Liverpool Street, Russell Square, Aldgate East and Moorgate.

This is just so painful... it reminds me of the Madrid bombings so much and that still makes me cry. England is also my second home and London my favourite city in the world, I couldn't be more crushed. My heart goes out to everyone in Britain, I know what you must feel like know :(

Well if you think about it a bit more logically, it wasn't until yesterday that the announcement was made that London would host the Olympics. Obviously these bombings took a lot of careful planning. So did they have an alternate plan just in case Paris won the Olympics rights?
Seems more like coincidence to me.

i mean...it's not out of the question that the plans were made in Paris, NYC, Moscow and any other cities that were in the running to get the Olympics...and then when the decicion was made, they carried out the plans in that specific place. It could have happened that way, I just don't see it as likely.

This breaks my heart.
London is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited and I was in some of those locations (Russell Square, Aldgate, Edgware) less than a week and a half ago.
Anyone touched by this tragedy is in my prayers.

I think it's more likely the people who orchestrated this were intent on disrupting the summit, which it did to a certain extent, because Tony has left the other world leaders to chat and flown down to London to sort things out.

I'm so scared and so shocked. Today i was going to Cambridge for an open day. I got the train up to london and was on the northern line at euston about to change to kings cross. They evacuated the station and said there was a power surge. I got completely lost walking to kings cross and ended up walking past woburn place and tavistock square. Luckily, i called my mum and she redirected me back.
Then hundreds of emergency services started arriving and we were told it was an 'electrical fault' but people started coming out with black smoke over their faces and i started getting scared. I saw a man bleeding from the mouth, i saw a woman faint, i saw overflowing hospitals- it was so eerily quiet. I was completely alone and my battery was running out. My mum called and we decided i should walk to waterloo- it was about 9:45 and she directed me down woburn place except i got lost. Thank god i did because thats exactly where the bus bomb went off, and it would've been exactly where i was walking down. That could've been me. I have never been that close to something like that before. Something made me lose my way.
It became clear something really serious was happening because there were police cordons everywhere and undercover MI5/police officers trying to get to the scene. Luckily, i managed to walk the hour or so it was to Oxford Circus and meet up with Fran who works at Vogue. I've stayed there the whole day. I am at her house now but i feel so shaken and scared. At one point i thought i was going to faint.My mum is stuck in cambridge and trying to get to me but all the motorways are blocked. There is no way i can get across london and home again, so i can't get home until tommorrow. So scary.

Hey I can't believe this has happened. They said on TV that it was inevitable and they couldn't have done anything to stop it. Seems kinda scary that these things can happen and people can have so little respect for the lives of civilians. All my relatives and friends are ok which is a great relief, and I don't live in London so I'm fine too.

As muchas I crack on my British friends, you guys are friends. We are partners in this "war on terror", and while I hate to make politics out of a situation such as this, I think that this recent attack will only make us closer.
I've never been a praying man, but my thoughts go out to those of you who are living oversees right now and are forced to worry about the well-being of friends and family members. If and when we find out who was in charge of this attack, I hope that the US Military will repay the favor and help you destroy them.

i was just watching TRL and the guy came on w/ the news and the second i heard i BOLTED upstairs to check this and make sure everyone was okay.
rosie-i love you!!!! hang in there, i cant even imagine what you're going thru, stay strong and if you need to talk im here.
i remember 9/11 four years ago in NYC, and the people i know who were so close to this as well as the people i know who died and its just the hardest thing to overcome. one of the planes was actually flying right over my town on its way to NYC, its just crazy to think of how close things can happen to home.

Edit: A friend of mine told me something today that blew my mind in regards to 911. More British Citizens died in 911 than in this bombing.
I guess it's one of those, when it happens in someone elses house it's not as scary. But when it comes home, it really hits you emotionally.

Considering similar terrorist attacks such as 911, it is strange that this bombing wasn't on a larger scale. There are some huge targets in London, like Canary Wharf. Although I guess the point is to cause panic and distress, and they certainly achieved that much.

My almost sister-in-law's sister lives in London. I work nights but I didn't want to wake her up and tell her because there really wasn't anything she could do anyway. When she woke up and got my message she tried to call but couldn't get through. Her sister finally was able to call and said they were fine.

Hey everyone. It's Georgie! I know I haven't posted in forever, sorry just finished college and it's been a hectic year. I wasn't in London thankfully but the whole of my town has been closed because of suspicious packages left around so I can literally not go anyway and it's so scary. My uncle is in London and we don't know if he got back home safe-but we're not 'talk to each other everyday' close so we pray he got back okay.

It was so obviously meant to coincide with the G8 summit but i don't suppose you know about that due to the chronic lack of care or knowledge about the situation in africa or global warming.
The fact is that people died, so respect that. There is no point in going over and over this in a hope that maybe you'll find peace of mind.

It could be a javascript problem. In Mozilla based browsers, as soon as any javascript is run from clicking a link, all animated gifs stop animating until you refresh the page. This is why all mouse events should be tied in with the onClick <a> property rather than href .. bla bla bla .. although looking around the page I can't see any javascripty links ..
Edit : The banana stopped for me, but the animated banners didn't, so it's not that at all! Maybe the gif doesn't loop forever?

That's a possibility, because that's something I'm noticing too. The banana isn't dancing, but the badgers are. It could be the banana. Perhaps it tires out too easily.

At least three of the suspected bombers came from the West Yorkshire region, which includes Leeds, said Peter Clarke, head of the Metropolitan Police anti-terrorist branch.
Closed-circuit TV video showed that all four had arrived at King's Cross station by 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, about 20 minutes before the blasts began that killed at least 52 people, Clarke said.
In a Scotland Yard news conference, Clarke said police had "strong forensic and other evidence" that the man who carried a bomb onto a subway train that exploded between the Aldgate and Liverpool Street stations had died in the blast, and they were awaiting confirmation from the coroner. Police were trying to determine whether the other three also died in the explosions.
Police indicated that there had been a breakthrough in their inquiry.
"This investigation is going at great speed," Clarke said.
"The investigation quite early led us to have concerns about the movements and activities of four men, three of whom came from the West Yorkshire area," he said. "We are trying to establish their movements in the run-up to last week's attacks, and specifically to establish if they all died in the explosions."
One of the suspects had been reported missing by his family at 10 a.m. Thursday, and some of his property was found on the double-decker bus in which 13 died, Clarke said.

It could be a javascript problem. In Mozilla based browsers, as soon as any javascript is run from clicking a link, all animated gifs stop animating until you refresh the page. This is why all mouse events should be tied in with the onClick <a> property rather than href .. bla bla bla .. although looking around the page I can't see any javascripty links ..
Edit : The banana stopped for me, but the animated banners didn't, so it's not that at all! Maybe the gif doesn't loop forever?

LONDON - Police believe they have identified all four suicide bombers who carried out the deadly attacks on London subway trains and a bus last week, the city's police chief said Thursday.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair told the Foreign Press Association that police believe "that we know who the four people carrying the bombs were ... and we believe they are all dead."
"We are as certain as we can be that four people were killed and they were the four people carrying bombs," Blair said.
His comments were the first public confirmation from police that the July 7 attackers were suicide bombers. Bombs exploded on three subway trains and a double-decker bus, killing at least 53 people, including the attackers.

"We don't know if there is a fifth man, or a sixth man, a seventh man," he said, but added that police were trying to determine who organized the attack.
Two claims of responsibility purportedly from militant Islamic groups have surfaced.
Commenting on the possible role of al-Qaida, Blair said, "Al-Qaida is not an organization. Al-Qaida is a way of working ... but this has the hallmark of that approach."
"Al-Qaida clearly has the ability to provide training ... to provide expertise ... and I think that is what has occurred here," Blair said.
The Times of London, quoting unidentified police sources, said detectives were interested in locating Magdy el-Nashar, 33, an Egyptian-born academic who recently taught chemistry at Leeds University. The Times said he was believed to have rented one of the homes being searched in Leeds.
A spokesman at North Carolina State University said el-Nashar studied chemical engineering there, beginning in January 2000.
Saad Khan, the chemical engineering department's director of graduate programs, said he remembered that el-Nashar applied for admission while living in Egypt. By the end of spring semester in 2000, el-Nashar had decided to pursue a doctorate at Leeds instead, Khan said.
In a statement Thursday, Leeds University said el-Nashar enrolled in October 2000 to do biochemical research, sponsored by the National Research Center in Cairo, Egypt. It said he earned a doctorate May 6.
"We understand he was seeking a postdoctorate position in the U.K.," the university said. "His visa was updated by the Home Office earlier this year. He has not been seen on the campus since the beginning of July."
Neighbors said el-Nashar recently left Britain, saying he had a visa problem, The Times reported.
The Daily Telegraph said police were trying to identify a man seen standing near the four suspects on the Luton railway station platform, where they apparently boarded a train for London on July 7.
The Evening Standard reported that police spotted a fifth man on closed-circuit TV of the group at London's King's Cross station about 20 minutes before the explosions.
Late Wednesday, Scotland Yard said anti-terror police had raided a residence northwest of London.
Officers carried out a forensic examination, but police would not say why they targeted the house on a residential street in Aylesbury, about 40 miles from London and 20 miles from Luton - where a vehicle believed to be linked to the attacks was towed away Wednesday.
Reports said Tanweer had been arrested once for shoplifting, and Hussain was once questioned for disorderly behavior.
The Independent newspaper, citing police sources, said one of the four had been linked loosely to a plot to build a large bomb near London. It did not identify the suspect. The newspaper said police described the link as a low-level "association."
That appeared to be a reference to a ring cracked in March 2004, when eight men were arrested across southern England in an operation that led to the seizure of half a ton of ammonium nitrate, a chemical fertilizer used in many bomb attacks. Several have been charged and face trial.

Incidents Reported Near Tube Stations
There have been unconfirmed reports of an apparently minor explosion on the London Underground.There are no reports of casualties.A series of incidents have been reported near Warren Street, Oval and Shepherd's Bush stations on the London Underground.
The stations have been evacuated.
Train passenger Ivan McCracken told Sky News he spoke to an Italian man who witnessed an explosion.
"He told me he had seen a man carrying a rucksack which suddenly exploded. It was a minor explosion but enough to blow open his rucksack. Everyone rushed from the carriage. People evacuated very quickly. There was no panic.
"I didn't see anyone injured but there was shock and fright.
"There was a smell of smoke."
"The man who was holding the rucksack looked extremely dismayed.
Police have cordoned off the streets around Warren Street station. They said a suspect package had been reported on a Victoria Line train.
Sky reporter Mark White said authorities are "pushing everybody as far back from the station as they can".
It is two weeks to the day since bombers attacked three Tube trains and a bus in central London.
Another eyewitness, Sosiane Mohellavi, said "Everyone panicked and people were screaming.
"We had to pull the alarm. I am still shaking."

Yeah, it's confusing me. They set this stuff off in the middle of the afternoon when there weren't an optimal # of people around, and it sounds like it's pretty minimal damage.
