I first found out about her in September when Kristin Hoffmann opened for her in Boulder. I had seen her name floating around MySpace and finally picked up her CD in December. I saw her on Friday in SF (which sold out btw)and she's really great. It's almost too country for me but there's just something about her music. Oh and she plays guitar.
Authentic. That's the first word that springs to mind when you encounter Brandi Carlile. From her rootsy bell-clear voice to the palpable emotion that seeps through every song on her stunning debut album, everything about this 23-year-old from rural Washington state is the real deal.
Growing up in the isolated foothills of Ravensdale, 50 miles outside of Seattle, Carlile turned to music for company. "Ravensdale wasn't a town," she says. "We were the only house around for acres and acres. Being in the middle of nowhere, it wasn't the kind of place you brought friends back to, so I just hung around the woods and built forts and played music with my brother and sister. That's all we did. And we thought that's what everyone else in the world did, too."
Full Bio (http://www.brandicarlile.net/bio.php)
Be sure to check out her MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/brandicarlileband) and tell me what you think. I really like (from the player) "Throw It All Away."

i saw her open for hanson in cali in oct of 2004.. she was pretty good. but she covered hallelujah and like, everyoneee covers that.
-
I have heard someone else mention that. I have actually never heard anyone else do it. I think she did a fine job.
Here are my pictures (http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLandingSignin.jsp?Uc=b3ddiv2.bma7jim2&Uy=ddtptu&Upost_signin=Slideshow.jsp?mode=fromshare&Ux=0) from the show.

May 13th GAMH- SF!! Very excited, who wants to go?
Tickets go on sale March 19th!
-
wow Let ..
i'm enjoying fall apart again!!
usually .. I have to "get used to" artists .. but she's just so fluid!!
Very nice!
Thanks!!
-
She IS too country for me. But you are right, everything else about her music is extrememely interesting. Her lyrics are so sad and depressing it hits my emotional mark almost always. Her older songs she wrote when she was a kid are really great.
-
I started to put up the show from last night at The Great American Music Hall. It's about half up so be sure to check back for the rest as well as the pictures.
Find the videos here (http://www.youtube.com/user/smpd24)

uhhh umm Was she like in the Go Gos or something?
-
I saw Brandi Carlile perform when she opened for Train in D.C. She has a very impressive voice. She came back onstage during Train's set and sang a duet with Pat Monahan, a cover of "Wild Horses." They did a beautiful job of it, too. I've heard that they went into the studio earlier this month and recorded it. I'm hoping the rumor is true 'cuz I can't wait to hear it -- that's gonna be one AWESOME recording! :)
-
Isn't it great when you are surprised with a good/impressive opener? I want to go see her on the 29th of July where she's opening for Shawn Colvin. She says it will be an acoustic set which will be cool but it's at a winery and the lawn tickets are $60. Who am I kidding, I will go.
There's a cool video of her at KCRW doing a few tunes in studio. Check it out! (http://www.kcrw.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=mb&air_date=5/12/06&tmplt_type=show)
Oh and get this. An email went out today announcing the re-release of her CD with 4 new songs. The email went on to say how they aren't trying to get people to buy it again. It said that if you already bought it and want the new songs to email your name and address and they will be sent. Isn't that crazy!! I mean, people would buy it if there was only 1 new song. Or what I plan on doing is buying just the new songs from iTunes.

Hey, that is really cool of her to do. And thanks for the info about the new songs. I'll probably go ahead and get them off of iTunes too, but the "Wild Horses" track recorded with Train isn't one of them. DARN!

I have finally taken the time to figure out how to convert the mpeg files from the GAMH show into mp3. Right click save target as is always the best way to save it.
Creep (http://www.boomspeed.com/smpd24/Creep.mp3)
Wasted (http://www.boomspeed.com/smpd24/Wasted.mp3)
-
I saw her open for the Fray and I was really impressed w/ her covers, like "Creep," (thanks for the mp3!!) "The Times are a-changin" and "Folsom Prison Blues," but her album really bores me. She has quite a voice live, though!

Brandi's new album, The Story dropped on Tuesday and I had the pleasure of seeing her for the 5th time on Monday.
If you haven't checked her out yet, you should. And for all you Grey's fans this Thursday they are going to premiere The Grey's Anatomy Music Video for The Story.
Here's the preview. (http://www.sonymusic.com/artists/BrandiCarlile/mediaplayer/promo/)
and a few videos from the show you can find here. (http://www.youtube.com/user/smpd24)

I was there at the GAMH this time around. She is a very real artist and very authentic. You guys should definantly check her out. She is the kind of artist that makes you reconsider your tastes in music because she is that good.

the new album is great. at first i didn't like it as much as her first, becuase the songs didn't really strike me right away. but it's one of those albums that you have to listen to a few times and REALLY listen and you realize how good it is.
i highly recommend brandi carlile to anyone who likes folk-rock, singer-songwriters, or just good music in general. "the story" is only 7.99 on iTunes--probably only for a limited time so get it while it's hot!
-
I think my favorite is Until I Die and Wasted but it's all great! It might be a little over produced in parts but it's fantastic. Love the harmonies.
I get to see her again on Thursday!! :)
-
I've only been listening for a week-ish and 'What Can I Say' is already on my iTunes Top 5. Really good stuff :)
-
So glad you are enjoying her, Nerea. Have you heard the new album yet?
She was great in NYC. Wish I could have also gone to the show on Friday but she's out on tour again this summer supporting the Indigo Girls. Don't care much for them but since they are on the new record I am sure they'll do a song or two together. Brandi is a touring fool! She's still going strong through August. Check out her tour page (http://www.brandicarlile.com/) to see if she's coming to you.
And for the Grey's Anatomy fans, Turpentine will be on tonight. :)
-

That is no shit. One look at her myspace....going to a city, jumping around and then returning two weeks later...returning to another place one month later...all the while cruising though all these other places. 8O

You were at the show? I didn't see you.
If anyone is interested, Again Today.com (http://www.againtoday.com) a BC fan site. Is working with Brandi's jr. high school to make a donation in her name for her birthday next month. They are going to present her with a check at her birthday show in Seattle. You can make a donation here. (http://www.maplevalleyarts.com/content.aspx?page_id=301&club_id=181069)

I'm so addicted to her CD. I bought it last week because I thought the cover looked cool and when I put it on I didn't think much of it but now I can't stop listening to it.
It's a real grower :)
Awesome pictures and videos btw, Let.

Wow how did you even focus on the music?!
-
Can you tell I like him most?
Thank you, glad you like her Katie. Katia and I are seeing her again on Saturday (next Saturday.) :D
-
i really rather like her as well, i should pick up the cd! when i get ready for work in the morning i catch her video for "the story" on vh1 all the time, and it gets stuck in my head for the rest of the day. love it! :-)

-
I love her well the songs that I have heard of her not to bad.
-
I'm not a big fan or anything, but from what I've heard, I think she will be huge in a few years, probably amongst the older crowd
-
Yeah, her first fans were older like me but they seem to be all ages now.
Saw her again last night in San Francisco at The Fillmore (SOLD OUT.) She is headling the Vh1 You Oughta Know Tour with A Fine Frenzy. Here the review I posted at AT.com
Seriously, I thought last weekend's House Concert was amazing (well it was) but this was freakin' fantastic. Sooo much energy in that room. It was crazy! There was the usual SF banter and loudness which can be annoying but is funny. The best one was the dude that said, "My wife thinks you're hot!" After Brandi was done laughing she said something like, is it ok if I say, I think your wife is hot?
Yeah so many new songs and damn if I thought the song was called, "That Day." She said the show was supposed to be done but she wasn't getting off stage. I was so happy she included it in her set. I did hear some sniffling. It was even more beautiful than last weekend.
I was really happy there was a poster. For those that don't know, The Fillmore almost always (never figured out why there wasn't one last show with IG) gives you a poster commemorating the show as you leave.
I was also surprised to see Brandi outside signing autographs after the Eugene review. She did go in the bus (it is seriously right outside the front door) but came back out to sign for everyone else. This is how great she is. She was about to get on the bus and said, "Is that everyone?" Amazing. She really is great.
Ok so here's the setlist:

does anyone happen to have an mp3 of the live version of turpentine that used to be on her myspace? i think it was from a show in seattle. i can't find it anywhere and i neeed to hear it again.
-
Not sure which one it was but I have a TON of live versions of it, the best being from the 2nd show of this tour in SF at the sold out Fillmore!!
She was the download of the day at Starbucks and Turpentine was the song. :)
-
it's live at neumo's, but it wasn't put on that cd. it was the best version ever, i used to listen to it everyday on her myspace and now i can't find it anywhere!
-
That's funny. She actually hates that whole CD. I can send you the file though. You still use AOL as the email?
There's a new live EP released on Tuesday, October 16. http://www.awarestore.com/item16735
Tracklisting:
1) Closer To You
2) The Story
3) Have You Ever
4) Turpentine
5) Fall Apart Again
6) Downpour
7) Josephine

omg is that cd in stores? i've been on the road for the last month and i am so out of the loop. downpour is probably my fave song of hers. when she says "you're growing older in peace where you're at, i wish i could be there for that" it makes me cry every time. i've gotta get that cd. i also saw a video of her covering "raining in baltimore" by counting crows the other day. amazing.
and yes i still use the aol address. if you could send that me i'd really appreciate it!
-
I just found the CD cause I didn't see that file in my iTunes. Turpentine isn't on that CD. I will ask my friend tomorrow and see which version it was.
Have you seen my videos? I have a ton of YouTube shows of hers. Too bad you're on the road, or I am sure you would have been at the Philly show with us.
Yeah, Raining In Baltimore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUzV-NiOyK8) was really cool, especially in Baltimore. Her on the piano lately is making me love her even more. Have you heard her Bohemian Rhapsody (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snhknES8amU) which she does as a warm up to Love Songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRTsLaJqI4I) to get her hands to stop shaking. Man, I can't wait til they do the whole thing. It's going to be awesome!!
Here's a version of Downpour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe24-frfw2k) from a radio thing I went to in July.
-
So I have to share this because I think it's absolutely beautiful. It's the first time she did Hallelujia on piano. http://www.megavideo.com/?v=XOYR2RZF
-
i know turpentine isn't on that cd but when it was on her myspace it said live at neumo's so i just figured she played it at the show but didn't put it on the cd. if you can't find that one, maybe you could send me a similar one? all i know is it was before the story album came out. she would say all fucked up instead of all messed up... there's no freaks allowed in... etc.
-
i want it too :)
-
I forgot all about that, let me see what I can do.
Been to a number of Brandi shows since that last post but I wanted to tell you all, if you haven't yet, to check out The Heartache Can Wait. It's her Christmas song. You can find it on her MySpace Page (http://www.myspace.com/brandicarlileband) and it's available on iTunes starting tomorrow. Here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYHs4Vy431Y) from her doing it Friday in Portland. Also here's The Story (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ireI2jTCzE0) and Hallelujiah. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YO_JQy2ID0)
-
Brandi is letting GM use The Story in their commercial for their new Hybrid vehicles. It premiered during the Olympic Opening Ceremonies tonight.
Here's the commercial. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nZtebfLpJM)
Brandi is awesome if you guys don't know that yet, you need to catch up!! Really!
-
Katia has slowly but surely been converting me on the Carlile.
Before it Breaks is the business. ;)
-
She is fantastic. We've been really lucky to see her in large, medium, small and super intimate settings. I've seen her about 39 times now. She's on V's heels. I'm sure Katia told you how we go on Cayamo because she's a headliner. We're hoping she'll be on in 2010 as well. She did a few new songs on Cayamo obviously she's given you a link to Before It Breaks. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKDYvEXWXTc) Obviously, I love when she plays piano but not sure how I feel about that song. I've yet to put up my videos but here's a link to my BC Playlist. (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=8328B901138C3943) That Seattle Tractor show was awesome!!
Hope you get to catch her live one day.
-
Brandi is actually coming here in a few weeks. The thing that sucks is the show is actually reserved seating, and it is the night before Brewers opening day. I have to work at 7am the next day because I am working 5 hours before going to opening day, so that would kind of suck for me.
I am still debating whether I should go or not!
-
I decided to suck it up and bought a ticket to the show. I'll let you know what I think, just as you will let me know about Higgins. :)
-
i saw brandi in philly last night! she played about 5 new songs... this new album is gonna be good!!!
-
A release date for Brandi Carlile's forthcoming studio album Give Up The Ghost has officially been announced. An early release of the Give Up The Ghost vinyl will be available at Brandi's online store, (http://www.bluecollardistro.com/brandicarlile/categories.php?cPath=28) indie record stores, and on her fall headlining tour starting September 29th and will be available everywhere on October 6th!
I am beyond excited!! The first single, Dreams is available on iTunes now. She has a big tour coming to a city near you real soon. So check out the dates and don't miss it!! Katia and I are doing the EC and WC shows so maybe we'll see you there. ;)

I am taking a two day work vaca to hit the Madison show. Hotels in Chicago are ridiculously expensive, although had I known she was going to add a second Chicago show it probably would have been more palatable to do that. C'est la vie, haha.
-
Brandi has released her 5th record, Bear Creek. It is fantastic. I saw it listed as Alt Country. Brandi is amazing. She plays piano and guitar. She does it all, rock, pop, country, alternative, folk. I've seen her over 100 times now (lost track). Yes, you read that right. She's getting ready to start to tour. She has shows with DMB and some solo shows, so check if she's headed your way cause she is THAT good. www.brandicarlile.com

I don't post my BCB videos on YT cause her videos via Sony (SME) are what got me shut down, twice. I have some great ones in my FB though.
