8O Wii ?  Okay, at this point Nintendo is just trying way too hard to be unique.   I was okay with the controller, but the name is just  plain retarded.

The controller looks like it will turn out to be downright amazing. The name, however, sucks. Hey... let's go to my room and play games on my Wii. ARRRG!!!!

play games on what? Wii?  what?  play games on your Wii Wii?!?

It sounds so awkward...oh well, as long as the games are cool I'm down with it.  And like you said the controller is amazing.  I can't wait to play nintendo's wii wii.

I think the name is fun. They probably did it on purpose.
We're talking about Nintendo! ;)
I'm still getting it, no matter what.
(btw, Playstation has always been a stupid name and what about Xbox?!)

Microsoft and Sony aren't the one marketing a console named "wee" that includes a phallus shaped controller.

No but Sony PS3's controller looks like a boomerang so far, I'm not sure that's better! lol
The Wii controller looks like a remote to me. If you want it to be a phallus, hey, it's up to you! ;)

please dont prejudge the controller untill you fully understand what it can do, and you actually have the opportunity to experience its greatness.

also, yes, if you refuse to buy it simply because of its name, then you're just going to be missing out. the system is amazing in so many ways, and wont cost you $500 (coughps3cough)

Wii is a short and simple name that is easy to advertise, and easy to get familiar with.
a very smart decision for Nintendo.
getting loads of publicity with a not-so-normal name is a great way to advertise, and spread information about all of Nintendo Wii's features, which will hopefully expand the variety of people who play video games, which is what Nintendo is aiming for with the Wii... a controller thats easy to use, and looks easy on the eye, something that can easily become a normal household appliance... Backward compatibility and a HUGE Virtual Console concept including many, many games from NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and even Turbo Grafx 16 (yes, this is true :!: )... Bringing in more hardcore gamers with more online play(thus the 2 i's in Wii, for 2 people, togetherness, online play, bringing everyone to gaming instead of just the gamers), and a controller that controls better than PC games, and any other console ever before(you people gotta read more about the controller to understand it, dont just say its dumb because of the way it looks)

Nintendo is trying something outragous, and I LOVE them for it!

Except for the fact that the name sucks so much, it has received a nearly uniform negative from gamers and non-gamers alike. Some choice quotes from some people I've asked about it...

A 19 year old non-gamer female from the SF Bay Area...
Quote from: "Jennifer"
that's dumb...
well i guess random is a better word
i dont even like the name though
its not appealing at all
whomever came up with the name should get fired haha

A 19 year old female non-gamer originally from the Santa Barbara area...
Quote from: "Kristin"
Nintendo Penis would be better. At least they'd be upfront with us and spare us all the double entendre.

An 18 year old male casual gamer originally from the LA area...
Quote from: "Brian"
What the fuck?! That name is gay. I think that's the most gay name I've ever heard. HA HA! I love this line. "Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other." In touch with each other's penises is more like it!

NOBODY... and I mean NOBODY I've talked to likes the name, gamer or not.

I never thought those names were terrible. Playstation and iPod are good. Xbox is meh, but not terrible. In any case, Revolution was a FAR better name than Wii.

The internet has been abuzz about how much this name SUCKS and how out of touch Nintendo is to attempt to push their name. The old mantra "any publicity is good publicity" only holds true for entertainers. A company? I think not.

Yes.  It's a terrible name..... but frankly, if you were gonna spend 300 dollars on a video game machine, you shouldn't let a stupid name disuade you.

Haha Andrew!  I hate the name too but really it is all in the titles.  Nintendo will always be Nintendo in their strategy.  I mean look at the DS.  A system with much lower specs but still doing better than the PSP.
The staple titles like Mario and Zelda will always keep people coming back.  I am dissapointed that Nintendo is not supporting HD, but we will see where that goes.  Anyways I am planning to get this system along with the PS3 when it comes out as well.  I mean look at the PS3 they had to scale that down too......no one knows what these systems can do until they put them out.

That controller is a bag of ass. Even I know that, and I don't understand much about it and have never even seen so much as a picture of it.

Quote
The name--which is pronounced "we"--is meant to invoke the feeling of cooperation that comes when people play games together.

Pfft. Cooperation. Everyone knows that two player gaming is about who can win the friendly fire fight and get to the selfish power-up first. If that means hacking your opponent to death to get the *only* fireball launching purple dragon in the game (Golden Axe), then so be it. That's the true spirit of multi-player gaming. They should call it the Mii.

Quote
Further, Nintendo said, the written name is meant to visually conjure up the image of two people standing together.

What?! Is this thing a games console or a hippy love in? It all started with sweat instead of blood on the SNES version of Mortal Kombat, now it has come to this *shakes head*

In summary. Bring back Sega.

I believe I am winning this conversation.

Well, the way I figure it, I will want Blu Ray ASAP.  The PS3 just makes sense for me because it's blu ray + video games for only a little bit more than I would pay for a Blu ray player alone.

So even if there aren't any games at release that excite me, it's still a blu ray player.

Yeah well we will see what the software is like.  Is it just me or I haven't seen anything (games) that makes me want to buy any of these damn systems.  Look at the XBOX 360.........there hasn't been one title that makes me want to buy yet.  Along with the rest of the folks I must say I am a little dissapointed with Nintendo's specs on the Wii.  It seems they are always a little behind when it comes to the power of their machines and I think it is a mistake not to support anything over 480p on a "next gen" system.  The controller seems innovative in some ways but I have to agree with Kev on this one..........it looks like a gimmick to hype the system.  I guess we will all wait and see.

Right, because I seem to recall REmake, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Killer 7, and Metroid Prime among others being pretty non-kiddy.  :D

I like, many others bought Mortal Kombat on the Genesis because of the blood/sweat fiasco (Ahh, Kano's fatality!), but Nintendo has obvoiusly changed it's policy towards violent videogames since the SNES era. Even on the N64, we got games like Duke Nukem and Quake 64.

And you know you like the "kiddy" games, too. Animal Crossing and Mario Kart are the shit.

Yeah, the name was stupid at first, I mean, the Revolution was an awesome name.. but the Wii grew on me.

It's all about the Wii and the 360 this gen. I have no desire to get Blu-Ray at the moment, especiallly in a Playstation. DRE FTL.

Speaking of the DS...
Wii will be compatible with DS.
You'll be able to download demos from Wii to DS (much like the already-existing DS Download Stations), among other things.

and btw, you all should pick up a DS Lite! they're amazing!
Nintendo is doing great things to get people of all ages to play video games. you really need to check out these games, they're great.

and New Super Mario Bros. is amazing, its the first original Mario side scroller in a long time! (think like the old NES games), its really fun! :D

I'd call Alone in the dark and Tomb raider Action-Adventure games, not 3D platformers. 3D platformers are things like Crash bandicoot (sp?), Spyra the dragon, Mario 3D, Sonic 3D, etc.

I'll also add that the first Alone In The Dark is arguably the greatest game ever made.

Both StarControl II and Wing Commander 2 are available in "updated" fan version that run on Windows and some even on Linux and Mac.  Check wikipedia and google and you should be able to find them.

SC2 is a RPG with an action based combat system.  It's overheard, and you're in space ships, and each ship has a few specific attacks.  It's wild and has a great storyline.

Wing Commander invented the cockpit view space fighter sim.  So if you liked Tie Fighter or X-Wing, they are essentially Wing Commander clones.

Let me enlighten you: it was the Nintendo DS Lite, it just came out in the US and Europe.
The game was probably New Super Mario Bros. which kinda looks like the old NES Mario (gameplay-wise) but with kick-ass new graphics!

My friends Matt and Sierra have a Wii...

I've played it two different times. I can't help but thinks its totally awesome. I mean, this a completely new way of gaming. And you're not sitting on your butt for hours when you play, which, yo, like for reaaal, thats cool to me.

The Wii Sports it comes with, no its not the greatest graphics ever, but I saw the Zelda and THAT was awesome. O.O It makes me want a Wii.

Of course, its even more fun to poke fun at the name...

Ben's always joking around that we gotta go over and play with Matt's Wii. I told him to get his own Wii and play with his. xD C'mon, how is that not funny!?!

When they start making Wii 2 and 3 and whatever next after this one, I can't wait to see what other things they come up with...

I'm very impressed.

That is so true.  Just the way the two "i"s in "Wii" bow down in all their glory in the commercial makes me crack up.  Definitely beats those psychotic PS3 commericals (wtf??) Nintendo has always been where it's at. I love how the Wii just came out from nowhere and is totally taking over, or so it seems.

I'm not much of a video game person myself, but I am thrilled at the idea that, while for so long we've been tilting and waving our game controllers around in futility trying to make something happen, it's actually the way now.

Yup, I do have Zelda and, not to rub it in, but it's awesome too :)
I also got Wii Sports (it comes bundled with the system though), Red Steel and DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 2 (which I have yet to try on the Wii).

^ You know, I really just don't think that Wii is going to be a very good investment for you.  I mean it might look fun now, but with all those wonderfully addicting games... I'm just not sure you'll have the time to stop having fun and actually take a break for showers and food and for posting on these grand 'ol boards, I mean time for the stuff that really matters. I urge you, before it gets to the point where you just can't say 'no more wii for me,' to hand over that beautiful console and the zelda game. Be above the wii man, above. How could any game playing give such a rewarding feeling?

I am waiting for someone here to crack their TV with their Wiimote, lol.

The Wii seems pretty cool, but I don't really play video games enough anymore to invest in a whole new system.

Well, I think the official Nintendo name for it is the "Wii Remote" but everyone calls it a Wiimote, it's faster and cooler :)
Been playing Zelda for 8 hours and I love it so far, it's really THE Zelda everyone's been waiting for.  8)

I've already seen pics of that happen from the IGN message boards.

some people are just pure idiots and swing the controller as hard and fast as they can, and are surprised when it slips out of their hand, breaks the safety strap thingy and smashes the TV... and the Wiimote still works ;)

but just so you guys know, Nintendo already addressed this problem by making thicker safety strap thingys, so they wont snap as easily.
but for real, people need to learn to not overstress themselves while playing...

One basic principle of engineering is that things should be overbuilt to the maximum extent that is practical. It's Nintendo's fault for not making the straps sturdy enough to begin with.

Well it's really no surprise people are getting so out of control... I mean how many of us have sat with a supernintendo controller, jerking it around left and right when we're racing Mario Kart... and it doesn't even DO anything!

Give people a hammer and they'll say it's the company's fault that they hit their fingers with it.
If you use the Wiimote the right way, nothing bad will happen. Period.

Wii Internet channel update today!!
You can download for free the final version of Opera until June. (there's just a small system firmware update to run before that)
Nintendo servers must be busy as hell because my Opera update has been downloading for the past 40 minutes and it usually takes 2 0r 3 min.  :?
