Title: Occupations.
Post by: Aaron on June 15, 2006, 10:16:35 am
I'm getting toward the age where I need to start figuring out what I want to be when I'm older. So I was wondering, if you guys could possibly post what Job you currently have, or what you want to be, etc.
I'm looking more towards the medical field.

I think being an anasteseologist would be fun.
They make alot of money, and it has alot of importance towards surgerys and stuff.

Anyone?  :D

You're 14.  I wouldn't worry about it yet.

Also, anasthesiology is supposed to be very very stressfull.

My grandfather is a retired anesthesiologist. He had six kids and lived in a HUGE house in New York, but yes, he did say the job was very stressful because of the responsability you have and there is no room for error.

I suggest being a starving artist   . That's my future! (I can't wait...)

Ah, yes. But my I'm going into 9th grade (begining of highschool), and down here in Louisiana, each highschool is like a different academy. Like medical, arts, financing, etc.

And I got into the medical academy so that's where I'm going.
We get to take lots of classes and learn about the different medical occupations.

It is true. I know that schools pressure students to plan their whole lives by the time they finish school, but you may need more time and that's fine. Nothing is definite, and you don't have to commit to one thing for the rest of your life. You're allowed to change your mind. Find out what you're good at, and what you enjoy. I don't think that one should choose a particular career because of the salary.

i'm an art major! graphic design mainly.
i've also toyed with the idea of double majoring in music.
but i want to graduate in the near future haha so that might not be a good idea.

i work at web design office where i sometimes get to do graphic design (mostly business cards or editing graphics for the web) but i pretty much do everything. right now i'm doing sales. don't get into sales. it's very boring and clients are mean.

yeah there's no undergrad for Library Science...I'm doing English Lit. right now for undergrad. I considered doing Education as well so that I could be a school librarian, but I don't want to do education since I have no desire to be a teacher. So, public/reference librarian I shall be.

I feel for anyone who is trying to figure out what to do.  The job market changes so quickly!  In 4 years for a college, or even 2 for a trade school, the level of demand can be entirely different from what it was when one first chose a school. These days, one sees many people in their 20's and 30's re-training themselves, which bears out my observation.

It's really a lot of work to decide.  The only advice I have is to do what you love.  A long school day gets replaced by an 8 hour work day, so you'd better dig whatever field you go into.

Way back when, I took a look at the music biz, and saw tons of talented people that went unnoticed.  I thought, "There is no f-ing way I can depend on such a full of crap business.  I will starve!"  I got a day job after college, ha ha!  I'm thankful every day that I have a roof over my head.

I know someone who teaches special needs students.  I don't know how she does it.

Of course, she does more than just Autistic... she actually teaches children with terminal diseases and such too.  I couldn't handle that.  It would be too emotionally draining.

my dad teaches special needs kids at BOCES...it pays pretty well, but you have to be cautious of some autistic children because they can be extremely strong. Every year my dad gets at least one guy in his class that he has to physically restrain or tackle because the student gets so angry he tries to hurt other students. I work for the good ol' BOCES too!  As does my Mom.  I work there as an Aide during the summer.  I also volunteer for the Special Olympics when I can.  Last summer I had a student (for boces) who was just what you described.  When he came to the program we knew nothing about his history so we learned as we went along.  Aweful.  He bit, hit, pulled hair, scratched, you name it.  He was extreeeemely physical, and he'd sometimes go after the other students.  It was really sad, we had to physically restrain him, which was.... aweful but there wasn't any other way to deal with it at that point.  He also is non-verbal and not potty trained.  What an experience that was!  This summer should be a bit different though.
